17, but the point remains.
Prp, I see what you're saying and you have a good point. My only concern is that Colt will be able to get it done when we don't have that run game. I don't want our offense to disappear when the run game isn't there.

Honestly, Deep, I think we DID see what you wanted to see from Colt yesterday. Hillis pretty much got shut down (didn't crack 100 yards). He was constantly getting hit right at the line of scrimmage, and had to push to get 2-3 yards each run. I don't remember him running clean except for his TD. I was worried that the Jets, with that nasty runD were going to shut down our run game and we would have to give the ball to Colt to air it out (scary, considering it's a rookie throwing against that secondary). But McCoy, once again, showed us he's not your ordinary rookie. I think he handled that situation very well. It was frustrating to watch him look look look, then have to throw it away time after time, but I will take that from a rookie QB. He also seems to like to "pick his battles" in terms of taking chances and putting the ball into a tight spot, but only where his receiver can make a play on it (ex. the Ben Watson incompletion late in the game, the Robiskie reception late in the NE game). I like that. I'm thinking more and more that he will expand on that ability as his career continues. I agree with you that I'm not ready to anoint him. He's going to have a bad game. It's just a matter of time (I thought it would occur vs. the Jets, with the defense that they have, but I was mostly wrong). I would need to see that bad game, how he handles it, and how he handles the next game. I think that's the one big thing we haven't seen yet. Tangent: I love how the same posters like to pile on you whenever you post on anything. Very predictable. Regardless, keep posting, dude! I disagree on you on one thing. If we are in a position to grab one of the big QBs in the next draft, we don't pass it up.

do you consider Locker and/or Mallet once of those "big QBs"?
if so ---
(and I would have said that if Colt fell on his face instead of what he has done his first 4 games)

Deep is like 14. He's NEVER seen a good QB in Cleveland
I'm 22 and the best QB I've seen in Cleveland was 2007 Derek Anderson.
That's the saddest thing I've ever heard.
As to Colt, this last game was the real limus test for me. I wanted to see how he would do after a good defensive mind prepared for him - there was finally enough tape. The jets had a good defensive plan. and Colt played well. He was challenged, but he didn't crack. made some nice throws, also missed some. Overall, however, he showed me enough to know you can win with the guy.
He needs to work on his deep throw accuracy and how to step up in an NFL pocket. But honestly, I've seen enough. He's our guy.

I am even more ignorant of college football than I am of Pro.
I was specifically talking about Luck, as he seems to be getting lots of love everywhere, while reports are very mixed about Locker and Mallett.
Also, we would have to be in a position to go get 'em. With the way this season is going (for us and others), I don't expect that option to be on the table.
And, let's say we are in a position to get him, and instead address another big area of need (D-line, WR, even a safety or LB), I won't cry too much.
And I say that I'm with Deep because, while I'm not 100% convinced that Colt is the guy, I get closer and closer to that point with every game. That kid deserves props along with everyone else.
I think we saw what he can do when his running game is getting stuffed up. He carried us into OT against a very strong secondary and pass rush. I want to see him have a crappy game, and how he handles it (no, I'm not rooting against him. He's going to have a crappy game at some point, everyone does. I want to see him pick himself up, keep at it, and turn it around). That's all he has left to show, in my opinion.

This will be a function, first, of how well McCoy continues to play.
Every indication is he will get better and better. And if we get some better players around him, then who knows ?
How do you get those better players is the question, and part of that is where you're at in the draft. If McCoy takes us to 10 wins, we ain't gettin' no Locker or Mallet.
I don't want to be leaving the War Room next April with a Clay Matthews or a D'Brickashaw on the board.

I echo oober's sentiments. Their run D pretty much shut down Hillis. They had to respect him as any and every D will have to, but he was definitely held in check. On top of that, they have one of the best - if not THE Best - secondary in pro football.... and McCoy still acquitted himself quite well. I get that folks may still not be ready to anoint, however. I wasn't ready after last week, but I told myself that if he came out and performed like he did last week, that I'd be a believer... and I am. That was not some chump-change defense that he played yesterday. While he didn't light them up, he did have a couple of drives where he pretty well picked them apart at will.... it was very impressive, and even moreso when you then consider it was his 4th start and only his 4th week working with the 1's and not having the entire offense in. You'll come around
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

You know, I really can't argue with you on that one.
Maybe I'm just being overly cautious/stubborn. It's just so hard to let a guy like Luck pass you by with all that potential.
Looking forward, I will predict that McCoy will show us that we don't need to pick a QB high. We will instead address another position.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Luck would be a no brainer if he was on the board when we pick, even if McCoy shows he's the guy. Luck has everything to be a potential franchise stud for 10+ years.
However, there is no point in thinking about it. We already have too many wins to even imagine getting him. He's the sure fire #1 pick. And the rest of the QB's suck pretty badly.
Anyway, I've seen a lot from McCoy. The only question left to answer is will he develop his deep ball and take the step from good starter to potential elite starter in the future or will we continue see misfires down the field and have a good starter.
you had a good run Hank.

The running game wasn't "there" yesterday - but we still took the jets to o.t. Yes, they had chances to win in regulation (3 missed field goals), but we had chances too.
As a talent evaluator - I know you look for and emphasize the negative and the the "what if" side of things.
Why don't we just evaluate the "what IS" side of things?
Fact: we have a decent running game.
Fact: Any and every team in the nfl would love to have a decent running game.
Fact: Colt has one of the worst receiving corps of any nfl team.
Fact: Colt has started 4 nfl games.
While you want to hold judgment on him until he proves he can carry the team, by himself, without a running game - I prefer to judge him on what the TEAM has done with him at qb - over the last 4 games.
Is he Manning? No. Will he ever be? Doubt it. Is he accurate? Yes. Does the team like him? Yes. Has he done well against 4 tough teams? Yes - but that means the TEAM has done well against 4 tough teams.
You fancy yourself a talent scout. And that's fine. But at what point do you put the stats off to the side and say "this kid can play"?
Why does he need to "carry" the team in order for him to be considered good?

I thought that question was already answerred. Who was it that led the drives at the end of regulation and in overtime yesterday? That rallied the team and put us in the position to win the game?
I saw what it is you claim you're looking for yesterday only Stuckey fumbled the ball.
Did I miss something?

Ok, we are getting much closer here... Quote:
The NFL is a passing league. A team must have an effective passing game to consistently win. I want to see that Colt can give us that. I want to see that he can be the focal point of the offense. It doesn't mean he has to be every game, but most of the time, a team will pass more than they run.
The only time run-first teams are in serious trouble is when they CAN'T pass the ball if they fall behind or need to score in a hurry.. that's it.. and Colt dispelled that rumor yesterday (all be it just one time) but he proved he can take this team, throwing the ball, and move us down the field and into the endzone in a quick effective 2-minute manner...
Quote:
No, Colt doesn't have to be Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. But, he does have to be Eli Manning or Matt Hasslebeck. People can point out Trent Dilfer all they want, but a defense of that caliber is extremely rare. With very few exceptions, a team needs a very good QB to win a Super Bowl.
I pretty much agree with that.. I don't want Trent Dilfer no matter how good my defense is... I think if your bar is set at Eli or Hasselbeck then Colt can achieve that convincingly... not many get to the Manning/Brady level.. and most don't stay there as long as they have..
Quote:
I think the fact that it's been so long since we had a decent QB has warped some people's opinions. To win a Super Bowl (minus the rare exceptions) a team needs a very good QB, not someone who just doesn't lose games for you. We need to see if Colt is that guy.
We do but we are going to have to see over a period of a couple years, not a few weeks.... As I said, he has knocked down every objection that has been thrown up so far.. there are two he hasn't knocked down yet.. one is, can he throw it 40 times for 350 yards and 3 TDs if we need him to.. and the other is can he play at this level over the course of an entire season... the second one is just to take time to see if he can and the first one we will find out as soon as we run up against an offense that racks up points on us and forces us to keep up..
Disclaimer: Even if we run into that team that racks up points and Colt fails to keep up, that is not the final indictment that he can't or won't ever be able to do it, it's just one step in his maturation... we shall see.
The thing that I like is that, in my opinion, he has bought himself some length on that leash.. he has earned a bad game or two before the "go back to the veteran" crowd should even be heard.. I agree with your comment that we haven't seen good QB play in a long time but the argument cuts both ways.. because we haven't even seen GOOD QB play in a long time I think people have set their standards pretty high for what they think good QB play looks like because it looks like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.. and that's unrealistic of a guy with 4 starts..

Some guy at CBSSports.com wrote this: Quote:
In successive games against New Orleans, New England and the New York Jets (McCoy) had no interceptions. "Quote me on this," Jets linebacker David Harris said. "They have a quarterback. I'm glad I'm not in the AFC North right now. [The Browns] have had a quarterback problem for a long time, but right now they have a legit guy in their quarterback. He is playing with a lot of confidence and playing lights-out football. Watch out. "Whoever is playing him next [and that would be Jacksonville], get ready and buckle up."

I think we're mostly in agreement. Even if we aren't, I don't have the energy for this debate anymore.
DnD: I may not have been around as long as many of you guys have, but I will bet I've watched just as many games as most people on here have. I have watched about 10 games a week for the past 2 years. I think that makes up the gap pretty quickly. You are now, and always have been a huge optimist towards the Browns. That's fine; I get that. What I don't get is your attitude towards others. Anyone who is realistic or negative (depending on your perspective) is automatically wrong, and you attack them. That's what you're doing to me with my age, and quite honestly, I find it very annoying. You can try to condescend me all you want, but I'm past the point of caring.

I know deep, I was just messin' with you. Keep posting how you post, don't worry about it. Yeah sometimes you come off as, well, you know.... , but I'd rather you not neuter yourself. Of course, when you proclaim yourself a scout on a football MB you might take some flak now and again, but that doens't mean you should radically alter your posting style.

I will only speak for myself here, ok?
No one is trying to belittle you. However, you need to realize that, when you post the things you do, people will reply. Regardless of what you claim, you are all about the "scouts standpoint/point of view". You look at 40 times. You look at shuttle times. You look at jumping ability. You look at height. Weight, Bench press reps. You study them and study them - and good for you - again, I'm not trying to demean you at all.
However, then you come and say "I need to see Colt carry the team." or "I need to see what Colt can do without a running game". Dude, the qb doesn't have to carry the team.
Why worry about what he can do without a running game when we HAVE a running game?
Why haven't I seen anything from you (and granted I may have missed it - if so I apologize) about the lack of our wide receivers?
You do remember Colt is a rookie? With all of 4 starts under his belt? No one that I can think of is calling him the next "All that".........but I do see a lot of people saying "overall, he's accurate, he doesn't make mistakes, he knows the game, he can read defenses.........maybe the kid can be THE KID". Maybe.
Yet we get "well, he needs to show me he can carry the team" stuff.........if the team wins - notice I said TEAM.....because it IS a team sport.........that's all we need.
Look at Farve (spelled wrong on purpose). Guy has everything. Huge arm, killer instinct, great team, great running game, he's got experience, know how.........everything you want. And the vikes stink.
Don't think you know more than others. Offer your opinion, state your case, then watch and learn. Sometimes you're right. Sometimes you're wrong. I don't need to see colt "carry the team". Why? Because it's a TEAM.

I don't know how much I can agree with you, We hardly had a chance to run any offense in the 2nd half. I believe he had 60 yards at halftime on something like 10 carries for 6 ypc, In the final 3 quarters he only got 9 carries for 22 yards which included a 5 yard loss on a blown assignment.. I think if we were able to run more plays his average would have gone up.

Arch, I agree with Deep to a point. We don't need a QB to carry us game in and game out. However when push comes to shove we need to have a QB who can take over if we need him to. We haven't seen that out of Colt....yet. I know that no one is anointing him yet but posters on here are starting to believe he can be our QB for the long term. I don't agree with Deep when it comes to this whole debate but I think he is right on this part. For the record I was one of the last voices to come on board the play Colt train. I tend to take a longer time to come to decisions. I think it's because I hate to have to backtrack. The best part of this debate is it's about only one QB!

This is a lot like the debate in San Diego the years before Rivers was drafted.
Brees was never prototypical, but had a couple of years under his belt, and was not producing
It is a lack of physical skills, surrounding talent or decision making ability? It is too soon to tell with McCoy.
I am of the firm belief that if there is someone else that you believe to be your QB of the future (Luck for Rivers) you take them. You need a QB, and more than one never hurts.
I like what I have seen from McCoy. He has a decent YPA, something that Quinn or Frye never had, even though he is operating without WR's. Keep playing him, at 3-6 we need to be realists.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Well said......if our last draft is an indicator of things to come, then I do not see that happening.
Hey and we can still draft Casey Matthews too
And Deep Colt was 1 play (the fumble) away from carrying this team to a come from behind win.
Sanchez and the Jets although they deserved to win the game, because of their play, but they also came very close to losing it as well.
I think that any QB in the league needs to have run support at least enough to keep the defense honest.
Defenses are to good if you allow them to only have to play the pass. Not Manning, Not Brees, Not Brady and certainly not Colt McCoy can successfully run their offense without it and expect to win it all.
For one it limits your passing offense, because the play action pass is taken out of the equation. No running game and no play action passes.
Good luck with that.
Folks say this is a passing league today.
True, but the good ones can do both

No we don't
Seriously, all this analysis is fine but what it comes down to is, McCoy can play the game..
4 games against 4 of the best in the league, 2 wins and 1 close loss.
As far as I'm concerned, the stats go out the window. We have his teammates praising him (beyond what's needed to be PC), we have opponents praising him and, not that it matters, we have the media praising him.
Couple that with what you see off the field and as far as I'm concerned, we have a winner..
Everything else is just meaningless chatter.... JMO

I don't think people have to worry....we will stick with McCoy at this point.
While we are playing for the here and now, we are also playing for the future.
Colt has shown he can at minimum manage games well, which is a big plus at this point. You don't usually lose that ability as a career moves forward. That is usually something many players try to find.
I guess the next thing I am looking for is how he bounces back from a poor game. It's not that I am wishing one on the guy, but sooner or later he is going to throw some picks and post up a dud game where nothing much good can be said. All QBs have those now and again. How he comes back after one of those is a key. Does he shrug it off or is it something that is going to stick in his mind and surface in his play??
At this point he has had 4 pretty decent games by most standards and really good games if you take his rookie status in to account.
That makes me feel pretty good, along with the fact the team in general looks like it can stand toe to toe with just about any team in the league.
We have a lot to feel good about.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Oh yeah, lots to be encouraged about with McCoy and frankly, the whole team.. They are playing inspired football..
Mangini has them going in the right direction.
But unlike some who would say that we are heading into an easier phase of our schedule,, I think because we are playing tough, we are going to be a target for teams now.
So I'm figureiing you will get to see how he handles adversity.. I have a feeling he'll be fine.

I go back the the pre-season ESPN (I think) program about Drew Brees, and his ball placement. He puts the ball in the right spot for his receivers, and allows them to make plays after the catch. I'm not saying that McCoy is another Brees ... but he is a lot closer to that type of accuracy than anyone we have had since we came back. His deep passes need work .... but his short to mid range passes have been tremendous. I believe that his accuracy on the deeper stuff will come in time. (and practice with his teammates) Anyway .... that and leadership will take him a long way. I think that an NFL strength training program can increase his arm strength, as well as overall stature. Then, moving to the mental side, the really impressive thing is that McCoy doesn't seem to get confused by the same defense twice. His reads and recognition thus far have been nothing short of incredible. Anyway ..... I am more hopeful about this kid than I have been about any QB on this team at any time since we came back from the blackness in Art Modell's soul. I think that he could not only be good ...... but could be a special talent. Just think ..... some people were mad that we passed on Claussen.

j/c For the first time in a long time, when we needed a drive to win the game, (and tie it,) I really felt that we had a chance. Haven't felt that way in a long, long time. Didn't recognize the feeling at first. Thought I had gas.

(and practice with his teammates)
Anyway .... that and leadership will take him a long way.
Oh man I think I remember that piece that ESPN did on Brees.. Showing how accurate that guy is..
McCoy has said many times that Brees is his idle. Roughly the same size as McCoy and the accuracy that both possess is kinda eerie.
Hopefully McCoy will be better on longer passes.. it's not that he's horrible at it today, just needs fine tuning I think.. He's not missing guys by a mile,, instead, he's missing them by inches.. Better receivers may take care of that..not sure.
You mentioned his arm strength.. he seems to have plenty of arm.. he just needs to learn how to use it better. (no, he doesn't have a DA cannon, but he's got enough)
The leadership you speak of, the kid seems to have it in spades. I listen to his teammates when asked about him. I expect them to back him up a little.. maybe even cover a Teammate.. But these guys are gushing over him and his leadership and skills. that's not the same thing as being PC about a teammate.. not even close IMO.
They would know better than anyone else... and they seem to be firmly behind him.
LOL on Clausson... Every year there is at least 1 QB that isn't expected to be at the very top of the draft that people pimp the bejeesus out of.. Classon was the one this past year.
I watched the interview that Gruden had with Clausson and McCoy.. I made up my mind right then and there, that of the two guys,, McCoy was the better MAN.. Not saying he'd be the better QB, but the better MAN.
It's kinda lookin like he'll be the better QB also and we didn't have to pay 1st round money to get him... if it goes as I suspect it will, he'll get his payday..... Oh yes,, he will get his payday....

While McCoy's play has not been an overwhelmingly important factor in regard to the highlighted statement, that this is happening to the entire team is a really, really good omen.

Love the accuracy on the short and mid range throws. The kid is really in command of the offense and showed something to get the game to OT and was on a game winning drive when stuckey fumbled.
I think he makes those around him better and that is huge. The OL has played better with him. I think the receivers and backs are also playing better with Colt.
Now with all that said unless he can improve on his deep ball, he won't be "thee guy". He will be the guy they are looking to replace. Teams draft over small ball quarterbacks at an alarming rate, even very good small ball quarterbacks.

Only way he'll be able to improve his deep ball is by finding a receiver who can catch one.

I would have to believe he will find his timing on the deep ball.. We all know he got very few reps in camp, then a few more once Delhomme went down, then for the last 4 or 5 weeks he's had starter reps, problem is that the deep ball is not a big part of our gameplan and it was NOT the most important thing to get him reps at... I would bet that he has spent the bulk of his prep time this season working on the underneath to intermediate stuff because that is what he was going to do the most... Give him the rest of this year and all of next years camp and I bet you will see a HUGE improvement in his deep ball..

one note on Claussen. the ND fans on the board did NOT want Claussen (i'm sort of one of them as my dad is a big ND fan). I think that is a pretty good benchmark to go by:
if your team drafts (or is considering drafting) a player from the college team you cheer for and you are upset that they might take him, then it is going to be a bad pick (see Robiskie and the many Buckeye fans on the board who were upset with the pick). Basically, you have been forced to cheer for the guy for 3-4 years and you finally thought you were rid of him and your favorite NFL team drafts him. Ugh!

I haven't seen problems with his arm strength, (admittedly I haven't seen a ton of deep passes either,) only with timing, arc, and awareness and ability on the part of the receiver.

Post First time poster, long time longhorn fan and if you don't mind new Cleveland Browns fan. I would like to try and alieve some of your fears about McCoy's arm strength and the deep ball. Colt has a bad rap about his long passes because he rarely needed to throw it at Texas but when he did he usually hit his man in stride. I am not knocking the Browns receivers but it has seemed to me they have trouble getting separation on the deep ball. Let me tell you that Colt(pistola) will never give up, will out work most players and I really doubt you have to worry about his name coming up because he was in a bar. He is a genuine nice guy and even his rivals admit this. Here is a clip from youtube showing Colt making some long throws, you be the judge. By the way he is the most accurate qb on the run I have ever seen, and quite a runner also. http://www.youtube.com/v/21Tda-n108s
