mind? no, we don't mind at all. in fact, there are quite a few of us in Austin and we would love for all Longhorn fans to become Browns fans due to Colt (and don't forget Phil Dawson and Shaun Rogers).
It would be great to get the Browns on local TV instead of the Titans as our secondary game like we seem to get every week the Texans aren't in the 12pm slot.
Welcome aboard.

Thanks for the welcome, I plan on watching all the games on the internet, and hope to make a game next year. I love your team, they are fun to watch and Hillis is a beast.

There have been a couple of deep passes that have been completely misplayed by the receivers.
Deep passes become even more the responsibility of the receiver as far as adjusting to the ball while it's in the air. They are, by nature, less accurate, and the receiver takes on a larger role in maming the play successful. He may have to move his route in or out, speed up or slow down slightly in order to adjust to the ball. The deep Cribbs route that was "thrown long" to the end zone actually appeared that it would be caught if Cribbs hadn't slowed down.
That will be a work in progress for the receivers as well. I remember the 38 (?) yard pass to Hillis that was right on the money. Hillis didn't stop, slow down, or do pirrouettes, he just ran out and caught the damn ball.

yep...throw it up, and the receiver runs under it...i think it will come with time, practice, and learning the receivers...
that video was nice...reminds me alot of kosar's passes to slaughter...dropped right into his hands....they weren't frozen ropes...

Yeah, I agree. Watch any big arm QB throw a deep ball down the middle, and the WR is always running to the ball. Down the sideline it's a little different, the QB & WR must be on the same page as to whether he's going to lead the WR, or put it short and have him come back. The problems I've seen this year have, for the most part, been the WR's slowing when they should've kept running, or continuing to run when the should've come back for the ball. I'm confident they'll get it worked out. Especially if we get a true #1 WR. It's a weapon in the arsenal Colt needs, both to keep D's honest, and to be able to strike quickly.

Welcome aboard, and to the Browns Nation.
FTR, I don't have any concerns about his arm strength, or his ability to throw the deep ball. Love the vid though. Thx.

Post First time poster, long time longhorn fan and if you don't mind new Cleveland Browns fan. I would like to try and alieve some of your fears about McCoy's arm strength and the deep ball. Colt has a bad rap about his long passes because he rarely needed to throw it at Texas but when he did he usually hit his man in stride. I am not knocking the Browns receivers but it has seemed to me they have trouble getting separation on the deep ball. Let me tell you that Colt(pistola) will never give up, will out work most players and I really doubt you have to worry about his name coming up because he was in a bar. He is a genuine nice guy and even his rivals admit this. Here is a clip from youtube showing Colt making some long throws, you be the judge. By the way he is the most accurate qb on the run I have ever seen, and quite a runner also. http://www.youtube.com/v/21Tda-n108s
welcome and thanks for the words on McCoy.. and the Vid..
I got about half way through with the vid and thought... what the hell are people talking about when they say he doesn't have a strong arm.. what the hell are people talking aboiut when they say he can't throw long accurately?
My goodness.. He HAS the arm and he HAS the accuracy... after watching this,, I'm more convinced that the problem is his current WR's.
Is it that some folks need to find something wrong with everything? Geesh
I hadn't noticed it before, but he's a slippery little bugger isn't he.. Good moves.

What is obvious from that vid is that he had better receivers in college.

Yes, it IS that the "experts" need to attempt to find something wrong - that way they can say "see, told you so".
"Scouts" and "experts"......well, they thrive on finding faults. They spend so much time looking at players - so the r.b. that ran a 4.68 40 yd. dash is downgraded because others ran a 4.5 40.
Or, the guy can't throw on a rope at 45 yds, but this guy can - so let's downgrade the first guy.
What they tend to do is forget to just watch and see "hey, this kid plays football". Be that a qb, a running back, a linebacker - whoever. The nfl is full of guys that were too slow, not big enough, not strong enough, not quick enough, not "whatever" enough, according to scouts.
And the nfl is NOT full of guys that were "sure fire can't miss pick" kinds of guys. There are some, of course.
Scouts - or "experts" tend to get hung up on the tangibles. They forget the intangibles far too often.

The pass to Watson in the corner of the endzone against the Pats - I believe - was an absolute thing of beauty. A real professional throw. Watson looked like he didn't run a very good route on that.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Yuppers... and as long as you keep the focus on faults, however real or imagined and no matter how miniscule... then you can drive contention and debate. If there's nothing to debate, there's no reason to tune in... and the "experts" ratings and revenues drop So yes, they will frequently blow things out of proportion and pit guys against each other - and even contradict themselves - because it generates talk and debate.

well wait, it's not just the media types.. it's just regular fans.. I mean,, someone on here,, I think it was Ytown, that was referring to his accuracy on long passes.
I was at the grocery store this morning.. over heard a couple folks talking and one said to the other,,
"But he can't hit the long ball"
so its everywhere....

I think you overestimate how much scouts care about workout numbers. After Haden ran a slow 40, you know how much he dropped in my rankings? Zero. He actually moved up a spot after I watched more of his tape. I think he ended up as my 6th best player. Very few people really care about the workout numbers; they care about the tape.
I will admit there are some people who put too much weight on those such things, but don't assume that everyone does. As for "Or, the guy can't throw on a rope at 45 yds, but this guy can - so let's downgrade the first guy." That actually has an impact on the game. There are times where that extra arm strength can make the difference. Is it the most important thing? No, far from it. But it is something to consider.
Yeah, the intangibles are important. That's part of why I loved Sam Bradford last year. But just as there are plenty of "workout wonders" who failed in the NFL, there are plenty of guys who had the intangibles, and failed. Alex Smith on SF has great intangibles. He's an excellent leader, he's incredibly smart, and he has spotless character. Doesn't change the fact that he's not a good quarterback.
There are two main reasons most people (myself included) didn't like Colt as a prospect: His arm strength and his college system. At Texas, Colt threw the ball, I believe, 7 yards downfield on the average play to wide open wide outs. That's a big concern. You can't get by with that in the NFL. His arm isn't very strong now, and it's improved some since he got drafted. Yeah, arm strength isn't the most important attribute in a quarterback, but it's still important. There were concerns as to whether he could throw the deep out or across the middle. For the most part, he's addressed those concerns with the Browns.
One of my biggest concerns with Colt has been proven to not be an issue. He hasn't had a problem handling an NFL offense mentally, or physically. He will never be a gunner downfield, but that's fine. Really, he has proven the pre-draft concerns regarding him to be wrong. But the reasons he fell in the draft are still legit. He had big question marks.

I'm not trying to jump on you either. But don't you think Colt could use a little playing time and mature a little before you expect him to "carry a team" through games? Honestly Bud. He was a late third round pick with four starts under his belt as a rookie. I've said it before, pre-draft almost everybody said it would take a year or maybe two before he would ever be NFL starter material. Now, after only four starts, you want to see the kid carry the team? I think you're expecting way too much, way too soon. We saw in the last drive of regulation against the Jets and the drive in OT that he can move the team down the field without much run support. We also saw his accuracy and his completion %. I'm pretty darned impressed for a kid like him drafted where he was. The signs are all pointed in the direction that given a little time, colt can be that guy you're talking about. But after four starts? Maybe you should just sit back and enjoy the show and give the kid time to mature. Only then will any of us know his full potential. We're not even going to see anything close to his full potential this year so please don't hold your breath. I'd like you to be around for a while. Not die from suffication.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

No, it's not something I expect at this point. I'm just saying that's what I have to see before I call him the franchise quarterback. To complain about what he's doing at this point in his career is asinine. I know that it may seem like I am to some, but really, I'm not. I just don't like the mentality that he is definitely the franchise quarterback. He may be, and I would put the changes above 50/50, but I refuse to call him it at this point.

Not saying you are wrong here, but keep in mind, every stinkin time someone thinks that McCoy can't do something, he goes out and does it.
Something about this kid.. I can't put my finger on it, but I think he's special..
I woudln't count him out of anything. Just thinking out loud

In that case, he's never going to make the HoF, never going to win a Super Bowl in Cleveland, never going to break all the all time QB records except interceptions and incompletions, and is never going to be the best QB in NFL history.

just clicking.. those that say colt cant throw the long ball, needs to look at some of his college film. the kid has plenty of arm and is accurate with it.altho that is a moot point.. no matter who we have a Qb or Rb let alone any other position. it seems like browns fans nowadays arent gonna be happy unless we go 16-0 and then will bitch the following year if we go 15-1..gotta win it all right now. no excuses.we need 22 studs on the field.. fire the OC. fire the DC. fire the HC. fire the GM fire the Pres.. just get us 16-0 every year PFFTT... just give me hard nosed, smash mouthouth, play till the wire football like weve had this year. For the 1st year in a lot of years. Competetive football every game. Win or lose. Make them know they played the Browns and hate seeing the Browns on the schedule because they know thats gonna be a tuff game

Yes....the wins will come if we keep that up. Maybe not this year but next year has a lot to look forward too.
IMO...we are 2 wide receicers a DE and OLB from making that move.
You dont have to win every game just the next one!

This year's Browns, even at 3-6 and probably out of the playoff picture, is more enjoyable and more satisfying to watch than the 2007 team, and probably the 2002 playoff team as well.

Knowing what we know about the 2002 team, pissing away the Franchise's had-it-in-the-bag chance to win a playoff game in Pittsburgh, I would say, you're spot on.
I don't really remember a single thing about 2002 except, we got in on a fluke, and Northcutt dropped the ball.
This team is not the same fluke.

We all know how difficult it is to find a good QB.
For each Manning, Rivers, Elway, and Marino, (and we can discuss Marino)we have Montana, Johnny U. Dawson, Sipe and Brady.
Ad the first round flops George, A. Smith, Klinger, Leaf....
QB play is about physical and mental capabilities.
Let McCoy play, I like what I have seen. Is he the answer... we need to find out.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

It all comes down to this question:
Is Colt McCoy your future starting QB?
If you don't know the answer, then you need to find out. The way McCoy has been playing, he warrants the starting job.
Reasons why?
1.) He manages the game just as well if not better then the other QB's on Roster.
2.) He is taking care of the football.
3.) He's learning at an incredible rate.
4.) He is more mobile then Delhomme, and seems more willing to take what the defense gives him with his legs unlike Wallace who seems hellbent on throwing the ball no matter what.
And lastly, the MOST IMPORTANT THING is.
McCoy is NOT getting beat up. He's had an excellent protection since the Steelers game.
He's been sacked 9 times this since, with 8 of them coming from the Steelers and Jets.

Anyone else see a contradiction? Just put the Haterade down and enjoy the competitive football . . . something we haven't been able to do in a LONG time.
Anyone else miss the pick-sixes from our "starting" quarterbacks?

I agree for the most part: he has exceeded all expectations to this point but his sideline throws from the pocket are simply awful (see pretty much all of his deep sideline pass attemtpts this season)...his college highlight video reinforced my opinion that he is, in fact, a sideline "lobber"....he has some zip going ove rthe middle on intermediate routes (see: Watson pass on 3rd and 10 vs Jets)...but I doubt he has enough arm to put up the throws we saw from Vick and McNabb on MNF 2 days ago, EVER...he doesn't need them necessarily but there will be games and situations (no TOs, little time left) where you need those to have a shot
We should try to cover up his limitation by running a lot of roll outs, he is a good passer on the run with the option to run it himself....those plays also "stretch" the D often and often somebody makes a mistake and he has the brains and vision to take advantage of those...even lobbing the throws (if the receivers are wide opne, who cares, right?)
Otoh, if I was a DC I would make him throw from the pocket and clutter the middle moving up both S all day leaving the sidelines 1on1 on every play, no deep help whatsoever...even if he hits on a deep jump ball, there's enough time to make up
I have been dead wrong on McCoy up until now, and happy to be...he was well worth a 3rd (thought he was a complete waste) even if he ends up as a backup long term but I've yet to see him connect sideline passes that are 10+yds behind the LOS and that's alarming imho...I just don't see much upside to his play...his best traits are already maxed out (accuracy, decision making)....he can and will probably improve in pocket presence, I think he's still too nervous back there but that's normal for a rook and will get better..but other than that? He is what he is and like some others I don't like the odds of him becoming a franchise QB

You know, if you offer anymore criticism of Colt, you will soon be labeled a "hater".
I didn't really mind taking Colt in the 3rd only because there weren't many players that I really liked available. He had a chance to be good, and it's always nice to have some hope at the QB position.

Your MO is to compliment but with a caveat.. with you, it's always something. Sometimes I think your name should be Rosanna Roseannadanna.. it was always something with her as well I swear, if I ever read that you "like someone" and don't add any "if onlys" on it, I'll freak out

On the other hand ..... How much of the reason that McCoy is not hitting the sideline passes beyong 10+ yards is that we don't have depth/talent at WR? I think that our offense will evolve into a hybrid that functions largely as a WCO in the passing game. There will be shots downfield, but most of our passes will be thrown shorter. There's nothing wrong with that. What could be wrong is what we've seen the past few years as far as throwing shorter. From Frye to Quinn, people kept saying that either guy could be a solid WCO type guy because they throw short. The difference between a Quinn or Frye and a McCoy in throwing short is as obvious as night and day. Quinn and Frye used to drill passes into guy who were 2 yards short of the mark, in a spot that not only let the defense catch up, but also stopped the receiver's progress even before the defender got there. There were a ton of completions ..... but many were the kind that were meaningless. McCoy usually places the ball well on the shorter routes. It's one of the reasons that we have so many 20+ yard pass plays despite not often connecting on deep passes. Add in that few of those go to WRs, and it's flat out incredible to think what could happen if we actually had a speedy, quick, and solid #1 type WR. When I look at McCoy, I see a guy who has done far, far more than anyone culd have expected out of a rookie at this point. His control of the huddle, and command at the line are evident. He's not taking penalties at the line because he's confused by what he sees. He's not overwhelmed, despite having just faced 3 of the top defenses in the league. (NO #3, Jets #5, and Pitts #9) Add in what Bill Belichick usually does to rookie QBs, and I see many reasons to be optimistic about the future at QB.

Good post.
I get tired of hearing "I don't think Colt can carry the team" comments. He doesn't need to carry the team.
Or: He can't hit the sideline routes properly. What's his completion percentage again?
Or "Without a running game, Colt won't be effective". Who gives a rip? We have a running game.
Or "he can't hit the wide receivers". Who can? They're hardly ever open.
Colt doesn't have a big arm, he's too slow, too short, too young, played in a scheme offense in college blah blah blah.
I see a football player. And the team does too.
Will he be an all pro? Who knows, the kid has 4 starts to his name, in his ROOKIE season - with no help from w.r.'s.

And ANY AND ALL QB's in this league won't and haven't been effective without a running game...Been that way forever...Let's add OFFENSIVE LINE to that one to...And let's not even discuss a WR OPTION...A REAL ONE at that...
Go Browns!!!

Here in Austin the local radio station (FM 104.9 The Horn) had a discussion yesterday about who they would rather start a NFL team with: Colt or Vince.
Thought it was interesting that 19/20 people who called in chose Colt. I was surprised because Colt is loved in this town, but Vince is reverred.

Vick has done it (and I'm not talking about this past Monday night). Maybe that's nitpicking, but Vick is carrying his team. At the very least, he's at least carrying that offense. Philly's D is solid.
As for carrying the team, I think McCoy has shown that he is capable of doing that with the last drive in the Jets game. He carried us down the field. He would've carried us to a W if Stuckey hadn't fumbled.
I love me some McCoy, don't get me wrong, but I am curious to see the kid when he has a bad game. Obviously I don't want to him play poorly, but I think one thing that remains to be seen is how he does/reacts when he has one of those games where he just can't get his thing going. Bad bounces, crazy calls, the whole nine yards.
That is the last hurdle I want to see him get over before I throw down some dough for a franchise QB's jersey.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I pretty much agree with you, with one caveat: even if/when he has a bad game, I don't care how he handles it - good or bad. I'm not ready to call him a franchise qb, period.
He is what he is: Doing great for a rookie with 4 starts under his belt.
Should he start the rest of the games and do very well, I still won't call him a "franchise" qb - but I will say "we don't need to draft a qb next year". The "franchise" qb thing can only come after 2 or 3 years.
All most of us are saying is "hey, the kid is doing it right now, let's let him get the rep's as the starter so we can see if it's a fluke or real".

Well even UT fans understand that despite Young winning them a national championship that Colt is a MUCH better quarterback.... Vince was an unreal athlete but has proven he's inconsistent, is soft, and just isn't an elite QB.
Colt won them more games than any other QB and if he didn't get hurt would have won the national championship for them....
I have enjoy how many of them have told me that, since their team stinks this year, at least they can cheer for Colt!
