dang. I was an Asante-pimp in the draft, very happy we took him. then, all that positive hype in the spring.
too bad summer hit and he just didn't seem like he could grasp the defense and he never could even make a dent with a million injuries.
i'll take my crow with some Frank's Red Hot please. can I defeather it at least though?

Maybe he can bring his ring in and let the other players look at it.

Schefter is reporting we claimed Sabby Piscitelli off waivers from the Bucs. He started 15 games for them last year, so at least he's go experience. So we essentially trade Asante for Piscitelli.

Wonder what move we'll make to create a roster spot?

I don't think so.
Where would we have an open spot?
We promoted 1 to the active roster, and cut 1.
We released 1 from the practice squad, then signed 2.
Then we supposedly claimed a guy off waivers who would have to go on the active roster.
I don't remember us making another move this week, and I don't recall us leaving a spot open last week.

Good upgrade.... I've always thought Piscitelli had good potential but got in Raheem Morris' doghouse and was bumped out of the starting spot by Sean Jones.
Here's hope he fulfills his potential here!

I believe Piscitelli fell out of favor because he missed a lot of tackles and was out of position a lot. So he should fit right in.

I think Gini' and co. like him b/c of his experience.. Atleast he has seen some things, and can learn from his mistakes. Asante probably wouldn't have panned out anyway...

Tampa Bay liked Asante to start over Piscitelli, a player who had been with them for 4 years and previously started in that system.
It's not a good sign that Piscitelli was cut the same week their starting safety (Cody Grimm) went on IR.
Asante had just as much or more of a chance at sticking around as Piscitelli.

I'm not saying anything about our coach. I'm saying something about Piscitelli.
The guy must've made multiple major massive mind-bending mistakes (alliteration) to be cut the same week the guy in front of him on the depth chart was put on IR.

No Biggie but Francies is back... Other moves: The Browns released running back Thomas Clayton, who was active for two games and inactive for two. They also signed defensive back Coye Francies to their practice squad. A sixth-round pick of the Browns in 2009, Francies spent the 2010 season helping the Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL win the league title. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/12/cleveland_browns_claim_former.html

Cleveland claims former Tampa Bay safety Sabby Piscitelli: Browns Insider Published: Thursday, December 02, 2010, 4:30 AM Updated: Thursday, December 02, 2010, 4:44 AM Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer BEREA, Ohio — The Browns had better hope that their new safety, Sabby Piscitelli, is better than their old developmental one, rookie Larry Asante. A day after Tampa Bay signed Asante off the Browns' practice squad, the Browns claimed Piscitelli, the player that Asante replaced in Tampa, a league source said. A 2007 second-round pick out of Oregon State, Piscitelli never lived up to expectations. On Tuesday, the Bucs released Piscitelli, 27, even though starting free safety Cody Grimm, a rookie, was placed on injured reserve with a broken fibula suffered during Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Ravens. Piscitelli (6-3, 224) was the starting strong safety for the Bucs last season, but missed a league-high 19 tackles. In training camp, he lost his starting job to former Browns safety Sean Jones, and said he didn't think the competition was fair. In Week 3, when Bucs free safety Tanard Jackson was suspended indefinitely by the NFL, Piscitelli was passed over for the job in favor of Grimm, the Bucs' seventh-round pick in April. Piscitelli was pressed into service Sunday against the Ravens when Grimm suffered the injury, but Piscitelli didn't fare well. He apparently bit on a play-fake and left tight Todd Heap wide open for a 65-yard touchdown pass. But Bucs coach Raheem Morris told reporters the mistake wasn't cause for Piscitelli's release. "It's never based on one individual play or one individual movement," said Morris. "It's about what's best for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We have to do what's best for this football team and what's best for the young man as well. We feel good about it. Hopefully he'll go on and go out there and prosper and do well himself." Asante, the 160th overall pick out of Nebraska, is already the No. 2 free safety on the Bucs' depth chart. In the off-season, the Browns had high hopes for Asante, and there was some talk that eventually he and T.J. Ward would be the Browns' starting safeties. But he tailed off in camp and wound up on the practice squad. Former Bucs coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen touted Piscitelli as the next John Lynch, a nine-time Pro Bowler who played 11 seasons for Tampa Bay, when they drafted him. In four years with the team, he started 20 of his 43 games, with 161 tackles and five interceptions. He also had 13 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. This season Piscitelli totaled 15 tackles with one interception that was returned 31 yards. Moore's hitter fined $40K: Panthers safety Sherrod Martin was fined $40,000 Wednesday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Browns tight end Evan Moore in the end zone. The Panthers were penalized 10 yards for unnecessary roughness, and Peyton Hillis scored on a 9-yard run on the next play. Martin's fine was big because because he was a repeat offender this season. In week one, he was fined $5,000 for a hit on the Giants' Kevin Boss. "I was going for the ball first and he was on his way down," Martin told reporters after the game. "I don't know what more they want me to do. I'm trying to make a tackle and I'm going down and he's going down." Moore, who suffered a concussion earlier this season, came up a bit wobbly, but then quickly shook it off and didn't miss a beat. Cribbs, Ward idle: Receiver Josh Cribbs (foot) and safety T.J. Ward (thigh) were among eight Browns idle on Wednesday. The others were linebacker Eric Barton (shoulder), linebacker Scott Fujita (knee), quarterback Colt McCoy (ankle), nose tackle Shaun Rogers (ankle), fullback Lawrence Vickers (calf) and cornerback Eric Wright (knee). Mangini said he anticipates Cribbs playing some on offense in Miami in addition to returning punts and kicks. "He does present some of the problems that teams have to prepare for," said Mangini. "To put him back in the wildcat, that's pretty good too." Ward, who's suffering from soreness in his thigh, is expected back on the field on Thursday. "I'm definitely hoping to play this weekend and I think I will," he said. Norwood ready: Mangini said the Browns signed receiver Jordan Norwood off the practice squad because he kept showing up in practice. "He worked on offense, he worked on defense and every week he just keeps catching balls," said Mangini. "I'm definitely more of a slot receiver," said Norwood. "I played mostly in the slot here in practice and in college. I can return punts and kicks should I need to do that. I'll hop in there. I'd love to do that." Other moves: The Browns released running back Thomas Clayton, who was active for two games and inactive for two. They also signed defensive back Coye Francies to their practice squad. A sixth-round pick of the Browns in 2009, Francies spent the 2010 season helping the Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL win the league title. Marshall update: Dolphins Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall returned to practice on a limited basis Wednesday after missing two weeks with a right hamstring injury. Coach Tony Sparano said the day after an injured player returns to practice is usually the pivotal one, to see how the injury responds. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/12/cleveland_browns_claim_former.html

Seems qualified if true; EW can help him finetune his game with his experience this year. Newbie will have to scale back that rampant tackling habit though . . . .

Sometimes it just takes a fresh start under a different system. Bucs tried to trade disgruntled Piscitelli, agent says By ROY CUMMINGS | The Tampa Tribune Published: December 2, 2010 TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers tried since before the NFL's October trade deadline to move safety Sabby Piscitelli, but not solely because of their unhappiness with the player. Piscitelli, who lost his starter's job during training to Sean Jones, had grown disgruntled here in Tampa and, while he never made his feelings public, made his feelings known to the Bucs. Piscitelli was released on Tuesday. "Things just got off track a little there with the Bucs, but in response to that, I just can't say enough about how accommodating the team was to Sabby's wishes,'' Piscitelli's agent, Ken Harris said. "When I say management was stellar in this situation, I mean they were amazing. It's not often you find management groups that are as interested in what's best for the young man as what's best for the team, but they were.'' The Bucs agreed to try to move Piscitelli before the Oct. 19 trade deadline, but the loss of safety Tanard Jackson indefinite suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy prohibited that. Bucs general manager Mark Dominik declined to comment on the release of Piscitelli, a 2007 second-round draft pick who was claimed off waivers on Wednesday by the Cleveland Browns. The Bucs did indeed have the best interest of Piscitelli in mind in letting him go despite their lack of experienced talent at the safety position, Coach Raheem Morris said on Wednesday. "We went in a different direction a couple of different times and we were going to go in a different direction this time,'' Morris said. "You just have to do what's best for your football team and what's best for the young man, as well.'' "So we feel good about it. Hopefully he'll go out there and prosper and do well himself. We wish him nothing but the best, and wherever he lands I'll be cheering for him.'' Piscitelli entered Sunday's loss at Baltimore after starting safety Cody Grimm left with a broken leg. On his first series, Piscitelli bit on a run fake, allowing tight end Todd Heap to run free on a 65-yard touchdown reception. Harris would not say precisely when Piscitelli became disgruntled with his situation in Tampa, but said the Bucs agreed to continue to accommodate him even after the trade deadline passed. "The team was just very accommodating to us,'' Harris said. "I just can't say enough about how professional they were in dealing with the situation and how interested they were in trying to accommodate everyone involved.'' Link

Now the release of Safety Larry Asante is making some sense. Sabby Piscitelli welcome to the Browns. Sounds like the Piscitelli has some tackling issues, but he has some size and might be able to help on ST's. Noorwood=this years Furry? Stay tuned for the next episode of how the roster turns

Larry wasn't released, he was signed off the practice squad by TB.

Correct.
But I think Heckert had his ear to the ground on Sabby Piscitelli's impending release and deteriorating relationship in Tampa.
Only speculation on my behalf, but in the business I think you have to have the mentality of a fisherman.....meaning
Baiting the hook.
This could be why Asante wasn't promoted. His value is still high, because the lack of anything of substance to go on.
If I had to guess I would have to think Heckert was a wear that Tampa was looking to improve their situation at Safety.

he wasnt promoted for more obvious reasons:
The main one being the coaches didn't think he could outplay Ventrone and Nick Sorenson

There's only one problem with your senario. Well ... actually more than one .....
Cincinnati Buffalo Denver Dallas Detroit Carolina Arizona .... and possibly Minnesota.
Those are the teams with more losses and who would make waiver claims ahead of the Browns. We have the same record as the Vikings, so I'm not sure whether we pick ahead of them or behind them.
I doubt that Heckert gambles that much. Calculated risks ... sure ..... but not "They'll claim our guy, cut this guy, and everyone ahead of us will pass on him." .... especially where those teams have defenses ranked 9,14,16,21, 23, 26, 27, and 29.
