Josh McDaniels has been fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos, the team confirmed Monday. McDaniels, who was the main person involved in player acquisition, took the job as head coach in 2009. He got off to a 6-0 start but the team has lost 17 of the past 20 games since then. The Broncos are 3-9 this season after their 10-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday.

I remember a certain segment of this board talking about how we got the wrong branch from the BB tree last year when he started out 6-0... he was the greatest thing EVER.

he was an idiot. Smart man, that thought he could act like belichick. Problem was, he didn't have the rings to justify his bold moves. Taking Tebow, trading marshall, hillis, and cutler. What a moron. He set that franchise back a good 5 years. Owner bowlen was duped.

+1

Wow, I can imagine how upset the fans are.....Marshall, Hillis, and Cutler gone and Tebow not seeing the field. AND getting beat like they are. Ugh. Oh well, don't care.

Yeah he made the Broncos a significantly worse team since he arrived by getting rid of Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Peyton Hillis and Tony Scheffler. Not to mention essentially trading a 1st round pick for a 7th rounder after 1 year.

How many coaches think they can do both coaching and handle the GM role/roster.... not surprised... they have been horrible after that 6-0 start.

But they didn't give the process a chance to work. You need to wait at least 5 years to see if the process worked...

I kind of....in a way think he got the shaft.

I can see getting rid of Cutler and Marshall because they are both head cases, can't really fault him there. And he has done wonders with Orton.

Hillis I cguess I could see getting rid of because nobody knew he was gonna be this good and he thought he could turn Brady Quinn into something. Can't say I blame him for trying, look what he has did with Cassel and Orton.

The defense is absolutely horrendous and that is not his fault, the team switched to a 3-4 and was completely decimated with injuries so much they had to run a 4-3.

I don't think he is arrogant or anything I just think he has a philosiphy and a mind set that he wants to build his team with the players he wants to match the characteristics he wants. BB does it, Mangini does it I just think he should have been given one more year.

There has to be something else to his firing other than the record or the player movement. It really doesn't make sense to fire the guy with 3-4 games remaining imo unless he stepped over the line somewhere.

i'd feel that way too except for all the leaks internally that the guy was just a jerk to his staff. he lost support of his coaches by being such an ass. it wasn't that he traded away players because they didn't fit his system, it's that he didn't get along with them. easy evidence of that is the mcdaniels./mike nolan split.

Wasn't it the Broncos owner that just the other day that said that McDaniels was not being fired?

no way. McD ignored the running game in NE (got away with it with Brady). He is ignoring the run game in Denver (and did not get away with it since he now has Orton).

He's great for inflating QB numbers. Winning football? Not so much.

Someone's going to pick him up as an OC, is he better than Daboll?

I think that Pat Bowlen is, overall, a pretty decent guy ... and the whole "Spygate part 2" thing didn't sit well with him.

Add in that the team was uneven in every aspect of the game, and that McDaniels was horrible in relations with the media, players, and even (reportedly) trying to throw members of his coaching staff under the bus ..... and you get a late season dump.

this is a HC that couldn't find a way to get Hillis in the game,, do you want him here?

i wouldn't say he ignored the run game. the pats didn't and still don't, have a great run game. mcdaniels lost a lot of backs due to injury but this week, moreno, finally healthy, had 160 yards on the ground.

the guy gets production from lesser talent. look at orton/brandon lloyd. as far as general philosophy goes, he can listen to a head coach, i'm sure. i also think he'd be better at helping develop mccoy or any other young qb than daboll.

Just a stray thought. With all the complaining about Daboll and since I think it would be a safe bet that EM would make sure that Hillis was in there, overall as an OC the guy did pretty well in New England.

IIRC, McDaniels came down on the Belichick side of the original "SpyGate" thing ..... which would probably preclude him being hired by Mangini.

I would think he's one of those guys that got in over his head taking a head coaching job. The guy is YOUNG in terms of HC's.

I would be pretty excited to pick him up as our OC. Mangini would not allow him to totally dump our power-run game, if he would even consider doing that.

One of the great jobs in the NFL is now a massive rebuilding project. Wonder who might be interested in signing on to such a mess. Bowlen made a huge mistake, in hindsight, by hiring this guy. Live and learn.

At least it's not the Browns.

Well then we'll forget that idea...

Moving right along. Could this be a Bowlen play for Gruden considering Gruden's infatuation with making Tebow a real NFL qb?

Eric Studesville named Broncos’ interim coach

Eric Studesville will take over as head coach of the Denver Broncos for the rest of the season after today’s firing of Josh McDaniels.

Studesville is in his first year as the Broncos’ running backs coach. Now he’ll serve as interim head coach for the final four games of 2010.

Prior to arriving in Denver this year, Studesville spent six seasons coaching the running backs in Buffalo and three years coaching the running backs with the Giants.

Studesville has also served as a quality control coach with the Bears and been an assistant at several colleges. This is his first head-coaching position.

Doesn't a coordinator usually take over as interim head coach?

They must be following Tampa Bay's lead on this one as they promoted their DB coach to head coach, and are doing surprisingly well.

I think it's time to go read some of the bronco's forum, that place has to be melting down right about now and probably good for a laugh or two.

I guess I can see that as a good reason to be fired.

The whole horrible with media and players thing isn't something that I would consider a big thing just for the simple fact that those have been two of the biggest knocks on BB and Mangini and if it translates to wins then those things end up not mattering.

I think over-all McDaniels is a good coach maybe he just needs to take his lumps and learn from this fiasco.

I too like Pat Bowlen,...he gives me the sense he would have never done what "that guy" did to us. I could be wrong on that,....

On Spygate and McD, this was his open door excuse to clean house and he took advantage of it, being the smart guy he is.

Just my opinions,...

In certain circles that's known as "The Jerry Jones move".

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

The botched punt at the end of the game that was almost a safety looked like a play that could have been the straw that broke the camel's back. When it happened, I turned to my GF and said, "McDaniels is so fired."

I don't know if EM would want him here given the history of McDaniels being with NE during Spygate.. then he goes to denver and the same thing happens again..

Remember, he's the guy that couldn't see what he had in Hillis, he wanted Quinn.. two strikes......

That's too bad. I always root for the local guys to succeed. But, can't say I'm surprised in the least.

He will catch on somewhere, though, but probably not as a head coach for a while.

Well, hell, the dude will still be a young HC if he takes a coordinator job for another 8 years and then becomes a HC again.

Unfortunately we already have one. Have you guys noticed how many times he lets our pick 6 machine throw the ball vs how many times we run the ball? For a team that's trying to establish an identity as a power running team and for a team with a below average QB playing right now, we sure throw a LOT.

I'm guessing its because they've given up on the season and they figure with this guy there will be no chance of having any controversy of should they keep him on and give him a chance or not. Everyone, I assume, understands this is a 100% temporary situation and they'll be hiring a coach this offseason.
