I really thought we were going to miss Zastudil,, as it turned out, we really didn't at all..

I believe we'll miss Dawson,, don't want to see him leave. love the guys attitude and consistency.. Would love to see him retire a Brown..

But, I get the feeling he's gone.. The good news is, we found a solid replacement for Zas,, perhaps we can dip into that well again and come up with another to replace Dawson...

Speaking of replacing Zas,, didn't Hodges come from Mangni.. brought him in last season to replace the injured Zas?

How come the Mangini haters never bring that up?

That article makes total sense.... the older guys had better numbers because the older guys are ALL good enough to have stuck around for a decade or so, whereas the young ones are a mis of castoffs and up-n-comers.

My feeling is this: Phil should have AT LEAST 3 more years in him.... give him a new contract now with a FAT signing bonus ($12M?) that will equate to the $3M/year he wants, but it puts it all in his pocket now - in an uncapped year, then give a manageable salary on a 3 year contract.

Mr. Lerner - Phil Dawson has been the single most reliable player for your franchise since its inception; do right by him, take care of him while he can still take care of us.

No kicker is worth $3 million.

The Ravens picked Billy Cundiff off the scrap heap and he's in the Pro Bowl.

Ha, Cundiff is a career 75% kicker who was out of the NFL for three years. He's a stopgap at best and will probably be cut from Baltimore halfway through next season.

Cundiff also has 38 touchbacks. Dawson has 6.

Imagine a kicker who can boot the ball downfield with our coverage team.

That's surprising...

Cundiff was really good for us. That's all I really remember.

I believe Phil himself bounced around the league in spring training his first year before he finally stuck with us in his 2nd year.

Here is a Phil Dawson as a Patriot field goal. You may remember the holder.

If the Patriots cut ties with Vinatieri because he wanted too much money, then I don't have a problem in letting Dawson go.

3 Superbowl rings later I'll bet he wishes he'd have stayed with the Patriots.

That's a good point, but we are no where near the organization they are, on the field.

I don't want to see Dawson leave, but he has apparently made up his mind.

I thought the player signings were on hold because of the possibility of a lockout? Seems like bad business to give a guy a big signing bonus and then lock em out. Are other teams signing players right now?

That's his problem,....true. The take I get there is, the Patriots knew (know) that a FG kicker is not the lone key to getting to a SuperBowl. (He might win, or lose, it after you get there, though.)

Vinatieri won two of those Super Bowls for the Patriots. I'd imagine they consider him a very very important part of their run earlier this decade.

He also won a fourth ring with the Colts.

NE w/o Viniatieri = 0 Superbowl wins (total team history)
Viniatieri without NE = 1 Superbowl win

I seriously SERIOUSLY doubt anyone will, but if they're dumb enough then let them throw their money away. As of 2009 (the most recent year I have any data) the average base salary of NFL kickers was 1.05 million. The highest paid kicker in the entire NFL made 2.0 million. Phil's base in 2009 was 1.0 million.

Sure I'd give him a raise because I think he's better than average and should be rewarded for his time, service and performance here. We should offer something around 1.25-1.5 million a year for 3 years IMO. Heck I might even be so generous to offer 5 mill over 3 years. But, if he's serious about wanting to make 3 mill a season (and be by FAR the highest paid kicker in the NFL) and he wants to walk away from the type of offer I stated, then so be it.

You do NOT break the bank on kickers. That's like splurging on your long snapper. Oh wait we did that too!

I think he's already sold his house, yeah he's not coming back

He will probably end up signing with someone in our division.

Just read that the Cowboys are set to sign Kris Brown to a 2 year contract to battle David Buehler. Buehler has gone 24-31 on the season (granted, he's missed some big one's and that missed EP the other night probably doesn't help), Dawson has gone 22-27 and missed some pretty large kicks - it's amazing to me what time with a team does to some people in regards to perspective.

I like Phil, but the guy is not irreplaceable. He's not automatic, and he's not worth 3 million dollars. Just because he's been here since 1999 that doesn't buy him a lifetime contract - if he's looking to break the bank one time heading into the sunset then more power to him... elsewhere.

As a few have said here no one thought Zastudil could be equaled - well Hodges has been better at least the way I remember things.

Every single school in the country has a kicker.

You are correct, he's now the highest paid kicker in the NFL. As I said the most recent data I had for all the kickers in the league was 2009 so it didn't include that contract. I believe Jeff Reed signed a new contract as well this year??

Anyway, my point remains.

The Steelers signed Reed to a one-year, $2.81 million contract in April after using a franchise tag on him in February.

This held true when the salary caps were $60M or $80M... but when the cap is well over $120M ($127Million in 2009), I don't see it as unreasonable.

Hell, at that level, the average expenditure per player on the 53 man roster is already well above $2M per year... and you see an issue in giving someone decidedly more important than Mr. 53 an extra $1Million?

I don't get it at all.... Pay The Man.

I would have to agree with that,...much. So, why did they let him walk ? Is his "loss" the reason they haven't been "competitive" since ? Are they screaming to get him back ? And even if it was the reason, and they're dying to re-sign him, does that mean the Browns should break the bank to keep Phil ?

Nobody wants to see Dawson leave. It "appears" he's gonna go anyway and we're gonna win our Super Bowl without him. I'm not fussing this one,....it just is what it is.
