Why would any team go after an injury prone QB in FA?
Has there been 1 season where the guy wasn't struggling thru injuries? Even in college he battled injury.
He's a gamer, but I wouldn't want to be paying for a guy that isn't going to start every game.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

No to Leftwich
No to Plummer as well.

and you want to bring him to the place where injury prone people are created???? It's terrible to say, but I laughed at that.......

I'm not even going to read the responses to this one...
NO.
Charlie already can do the one thing Leftwich can't do... scramble for his life. On the other aspects of QB'ing, Byron ain't that far ahead of Charlie.
He's not even old enough/experienced enough to teach Charlie much, and doesn't bring anything reliable to the table that we can use.
Bottom line- If we're going to (yet again) dip into the FA market for a vet QB, I hope Leftwich isn't our only option.
Any Dawgs out there know who else is available?
.
verdict: Not good as a starter for us. Not good as a backup for us. Not good as a mentor for us.
Thanks, pass.

I'd be very surprised if we took a QB this year. Probably even more shocked than when they announced Faine's name. If we don't go OL, DL, CB (not necessarily in that order) I'd say Phil needs a swift kick in the rump.
And no, we don't need Leftwich.

Well I see that many of you starting to see Frye Baby for what he is. I have been preaching this since we drafted him but have been berated for the fact that I have said all along that he is a CAREER BACKUP at best.
Carry on because I am enjoying this! And I have been saying you would since you started your preaching. Who is the next Browns player you will take delight in watching them struggle?

[color:"orange"]After researching what's out there, the best possible pick-up at the QB position this offseason would be acquiring Charlie Batch from the Steelers. Batch would come here and compete to be a starter...
I've looked at both FA and the draft and believe this would be the ideal pick-up, but Batch is under contract and would command a price.
Going along with my idea that Batch is the best possible pick-up...what would you do to get him?

I think I would shove hot pokers in my eyes to burn out any potential future thoughts of anything concerning Charlie Batch in Orange & Brown.
Then I'd get one of them new-fangled running back thingies that can do bunches without much of a line, and then I'd give him a line

You wouldnt trade a 3rd rounder for at best a decent starter, at worst a solid back-up and mentor for Frye? I would.

Your 1st 3 picks are all supposed to be future starters and team staples. Trading such a pick for a back-up QB to a team within your own division which will be made stronger with that pick is down right crazy. Though I like your first 2 picks - your 3rd round idea is just plain nuts

[color:"orange"]Perhaps...
But, there is also a chance the 3rd round pick will be a bust... Batch is a known commodity (and will make a more immediate impact) than anything we can take in the third round of this years draft. I would be leaning more towards your way of thinking with last years draft class, seeing that it was really deep, but the same cannot be said about this class...

Not to get into the Batch discussion much other than to say if we don't do better than that, we might as well stick with Chuck. At least Frye still has a bit of upside. Batch is Batch. That would simply be a band-aid move.
I am looking for answers to the problem, not just go from one problem to another.

If you were to toss a 3rd rounder to a division opponent... and the Steelers at that!... for a backup QB, then you may as well just give the pick away to a non-divisional opponent for nothing. If folks were tweaked about a 4th rounder to Seattle for Dilfer, a 3rd to Pittsburgh for Batch is 10 times the absurdity and would have this city ready to tear down the Terminal Tower.
All of that ranting done, I will only say that I would FAR prefer we take that 3rd rounder and get something useful that might actually see the field in a meaningful way such as an Guard, or another CB or a DE.
If we want a has-been/never-was backup QB, there are TONS of them out there that we can sign without giving up a draft pick.

I wouldnt call filling a need, just tossing a pick away. You're totally devaluing what Batch would bring to the equation......Stop looking at it from a we'd help Pittsburgh Point fo view and see how this move could help us (immediately) by bringing.... Competition at the position. A set of veteran eyes. At very least insurance. All that, IMO is more valuable than a mid round pick...
Remember, Batch played VERY well in a relief role for Pitt this year. We can blame all the trouble on the offense on the OL and RB's, but the fact remains...we need to upgrade the back-up QB position and bring in a guy who can help Frye. Batch could fill that role nicely and he's is less risky, IMO, than trying to pluck a DE, NT or OG out of the third round.......
I'm just speculating on the value of Batch....he might come for....say a 4th, maybe a 5th...?

It sounds like a good idea...I don't really like trading a third round to the Steelers, so let me toss this idea out there. Griese from Chicago...might not cost a third...maybe a fourth. Plummer from Denver would also be an option...Plummer has the same strengths as Frye (mobility and leadership), as well as experience.
I would rather see us get RB and Line help...as well as D-Line out of the draft and trade for a GOOD, experienced QB who, if he couldn't win the job, could (and would) actually help Frye. Both Plummer and Batch are similar styles of QBs. Greise is more of a dropback, but has much more mobility than Leftwich, Collins, Simms or Testeverde.
I don't believe I actually mentioned Testeverde....I hated him when he was in Cleveland...

When the pick is being used to aquire Charlie Batch, I think it's pretty much tossing it away. Heck, forget the Charlie Batch aspect of it... using a draft pick to aquire what will be a 10 year veteran career backup is a waste IMO.
If that's what you want to aquire, get one of the ones that is out of work already.
And as for the helping Pittsburgh angle....sorry, but you HAVE to look at that angle as well. You trade a pick to them and they immediately have multiple high picks in whichever round it is we just gave up.

I wouldnt call filling a need, just tossing a pick away. Your right....... it would be more like flushing the third round pick down the toilet Nobody in their right mind is going to give up a high 3rd rond pick for a 32 year old QB who has only started three games in the last five years.

[color:"red"] Leftwich is damaged goods. Period. Jake the Snake is HORRIBLE! Doesn't anyone get that? After a fantastic year last year, the FO still felt the need to trade up to get to Cutler. His days have been numbered until Cutler was ready to start, which is today. Without game film for other teams to scout, and a Bronco attitude of just throw the damn ball, look for him to have a big day today against the Hawks.
As for drafting, say no to Quinn, Smith, and all the other QB's. The need is O LIne....desperately.
My theory...take Alan Branch ( a New Mexico kid ) and trade BE & Northcutt to Green Bay for their pick, and take Jake Long.

I hope we do take a QB in the draft. Only I hope they do it on day two. Use day one to address the lines and then maybe you get lucky on day two with a QB.
If Charlie turns out to be the guy then great you can trade that guy if he turns into anything. If he sucks? Then thats a chance you take it was a second day pick.
If charlie struggles then you may have found your future QB and it didn't cost you a first day pick.

Clicking on ya, dude. If we're going to think about guys like Batch and Leftwich, we may as well give Tim a call to see how his shoulder rehab is going.
