I just recieved a phone call a short time ago. A good friend of mine had lost the life of his pet. I know to some this may seem trivial, but I,along with him, value our pets very highly. He was extremly upset and I can sympathize with his emotions.

It was Jaft. His female dog Spike is getting very old and has started having seizures and that in and of itself has had him pretty concerned. He even had to go to the extreme of getting steps so the dog could get up and down from the couch. But he and his wife have been dealing with it.

So tonight,Spike was having one of her episodes and they were just getting Spike to come back around, when he heard a howl from the back yard. When he looked out,his Husky,Frankie, was laying in the yard appearing lifeless. Sure enough, the life was gone from Frankie. He did everything in his power, both mouth to mouth and CPR to make every attempt to revive Frankie, and for just a moment,Frankie breathed yet again, but only for a moment. Then,Frankie was gone.

I realise that many of you know Jaft and just how much he loved and cared for Frankie. And how much this has hurt him and thought some of you might like to know. My heart goes out to him because I know just how devistated he truely is.

Many times the personna people post on these boards in no way reflects the person that is inside of them. And I simply felt those of you who know Jaft well, would want to know abbout him losing his friend and pet Frankie.

My peke, Choice is getting up there, she turned 14 in September. I've had her since she was born and I know I'm going to lose it completely when her time comes. My heart goes out to Jaft.

Would this be appropriate to pass on to him????????????????????????????

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... "

Author unknown...

I hope the unknown author realizes how much this short poem means to many of us who have lost the pet whose name spelled backwards is g-o-d.

Pit, let Jaft know that he will be in my prayers. It is very difficult losing a beloved pet. I know that when the time comes to say good bye to my girls, it won't be easy for me. Be it a cat or a dog, our furry little friends tend to be the light of our lives.

I'm pretty sure Jaft will read this. He just doesn't post anymore. And as his friend,I just wanted him to know that I and several here would send their sympathy and well wishes. In case he doesn't see it though,I will certainly pass this on to him.

And Ralphie, that was a beautiful post.

Hey Pit,
Do me a favor, pass on my sympathies also to Jaft, the "death of a loved one" reaches all and all and that includes friends and pets...As far as I am concerned, when you lose a pet, you have lost a family member.....Tell him that I have both him and his wife in my prayers through this small crisis.. ...And in closing, remember this, pets CAN be replaced unlike a person, that's both the "good and bad" of the whole deal.. ...Our prayers are with him.....

Pets can NOT be replaced. This isn't something any of us want to hear...let alone Jaft.

I can tell by the rest of your post that you understand how important pets are. Though it's true people can get another pet when one dies one pet doesn't REPLACE another, at least not in my experience. They are each individuals just as any other memeber of the family and though the grief of the loss eases with time I have yet to have one pet who replaces the one I lost.

Excuse ME ! As an owner of several pets throughout my life and having LOST them through vehicular accidents and illnesses, I tell you that it is EASIER to replace a DOG or CAT than a parent, granparent, brother or sister... ...Can you go to the pet store and find one of them available???

Do I sound like I am making this harder or even harsher for this man and his wife for their personal loss?

For you to even comment as you did I find quite offensive of my opinions or even my show of concern when it comes to someone's loss. HOW dare you remark to me the way that you did, this wasn't even directed to you anyway....

Whatever, Mike. I'm glad to know that YOU can run to the pet store and replace Fluffy or Spike. I cannot replace any pet I've lost. Sure, I can get another dog, but it will never be like the one I lost. They all have very different personalities.

My sincerest condolences to ya Jaft. It royally sucks to lose one when you are expecting it, but even moreso when it's sudden and unexpected. It can really tear you apart.

Thanks for posting that poem Ralphie... I was going to go look for a copy of that as I was reading this and then the very next post you had it here for us.

If I have offended ANYONE in this thread, I sincerely apologize for my posts concerning Jaft's pet loss. If you all don't know me by now, I am a very thoughtful person who really likes this site. As I stated, I apologize to ALL I have offended, but I am not changing the way that I feel or going to allow myself to be "BULLIED" by anyone who disagrees with my position....

My thoughts go out to Jaft....I may not know him, but I do know what he is going through....I just had to put down my lab the day after Valentine's Day. He was only 7...he had cancer of the lymph nodes.....the chemo treatments gave him another good 8 months...the last month wasn't good at all. Pets are members of the family....it's tough to lose a loved one.

Not in Mike's defense here, but I understand what he is saying......just to make my case, I have had, as an adult, 3 dogs and 3 cats "lost" (due to illness/disease or accidents), and while each one has had it's own personal charm, I would much prefer to lose a pet as opposed to losing a family member......in my opinion, to even equate losing a pet to losing a human is crazy.........sure, the sense of loss is there (and I know, as I have "lost" enough of each to speak from experience) but I'm sorry to say, I would prefer to lose my pet as opposed to my son or daughter.

I've loved my pets, and cared for them, as much as I do my children.......but when it comes to losing a cat....we get another one, and the new one has it's own "character". When we have lost dogs, same thing....we replaced them, and while we haven't forgotten the ones lost, replacing them has made it easier....................Try that with a son or daughter.........try losing a spouse to cancer, or a car accident......compare losing a human to losing a pet.........I bet if given the choice of losing a loved pet, or a loved human, everyone here would take lssing the pet...............maybe I'm wrong.

Not to belittle losing a pet, cause I've been there, done that, and I do miss the ones I've lost (except that one cat......... )

I guess for me, while losing a pet is tough, it's not as tough as losing a person (assuming you cared about both).

Jaft and Rage~Sorry to hear about your loses. Never having had a pet (allergies), I don't really know what you're going through, but I can imagine it can't be easy. From everything I've seen/heard from my pet owner friends, your pets CANNOT be replaced. Take care!

I think that I am going to take a break from here for awhile...My comments/expressions of sympathy were not meant to be mean spirited or even cold but the responses I have gotten albeit a few seem to give me the impression that I may need to "step away" from this site for awhile. I say this once again APOLOGIZING for ANY comment or remark that was deemed offensive to anyone on this particular thread. I never meant to hurt or harm anyone's feelings and the best thing I guess is to excuse myself from here...Once again, I apologize to all of you.......

At this juncture I must interject. I don't believe Mike meant "replace" in the manner some are interpriting his meaning.

IMO- I believe he simply meant that one "can get another pet". Not that it "relaces" your loss, nor using the new pet as "replacement for the one that you lost". But you can "get another one" when you are ready in time to do so.

However, you only have one Mother, one Father. And you simply can''t "get another Father".

I know myself,I could never "replace Tanni Bone" (my dog). And she has her own personality, her own place in my heart. But eventually, she too will pass. And in all likelihood,in time,I would in all likelihood get another dog. The new dog would never be Tanni. It would never replace her place in my heart. But at the same time,I could bond with a new dog,a different personality who would also work it's way into my heart.

But I only have one daughter. And even after a grieving period,I simply would not have that same option. I truely feel this was what Mike was trying to convey. And I understand his reasoning. Sometimes just one word,in this case "replace" may have not been the best choice of wording. But I think he may have been taken out of context when it comes to the intent of the message he was truely trying to convey.

JMHO

And I will make sure Jaft gets EVERY message from every one of you. I'm very sure it will mean a lot to him. Thank you one and all.

PRECISELY Pit, you hit the nail on the head.......that is exactly the way I took mikes post, and I'm sure that is exactly how he meant it.......he was not demeaning the loss of a pet at all, in my opinion.

I've lost pets, and they all have a special place in my heart/memory, but the ones that have come after, also do........Losing a pet is terrible....Losing a person is worse, in my opinion......

Thank you too everyone who "talked me" out of my temporary exile / sabbatical. I want to express to all of you my sincere apology in the use of the word "replace". It was never intended to be used like a replacement part to a car or even a DVD player or what have you. What I should have said was when the time comes for a "new companion" (I hope this one works) that only you in your heart will know when that time arrives and you will have started a "brand new friendship" that will grow into a bond that will last forever in your heart......

All the best to you and your wife, Jaft. I have lost 5 beloved canine family members in my life, and no matter the circumstances, it never gets easier ... and none of them can be replaced. Try to be happy for the good times you had with them and the knowledge that you gave them a fine, loving home. Look at the pictures, remember the puppy you could hold in one hand, cry your tears, but don't forget to remember the good times and to laugh at the goofy, funny stuff that all dogs do.

Thanks for posting, Pit.

Sorry to hear about your loss Jaft.

It's amazing how beings without language can express such love and devotion, and can evoke the same from their humans. Seems hard to believe sometimes that such huge hearts can exist within such small chests.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
