Tomlin was a coordinator for one year where even though he was originally a defensive backs coach the vikings ranked last against the pass if memory serves correctly ... which is awkward in a pass driven league.

By the way ... Tomlin is greatly benefitted because he has a coordinator who failed as a head coach but has enough experience to be a coordinator named Dick Lebeau

We hired a coach who is young and up and coming with a questionable past ... now we are trying to surround him with experienced coaches.

I don't see what everyone is so worked up about.

ADLinden...I agree...Holmgren got the man he wanted..good hire.

We do have some "crazy" folks here, who suddenly view Holmgren as their enemy...ever since he fired Mangini...they suffer from "Giniitis".

I suggest the naysayers form a circle and have at it...vomit away...

How do you judge a defensive coordinator if not by how his defense does?

I'm serious.

"Sure we suck on defense and can't stop anyone, and have given up a record number of points ...... but it's not all on the coordinator."

Of course it's not 'all" on the coordinator, anymore than last year's offense was "all" on Daboll.

However, when you look at Jauron's career, and the defenses he has coordinated, a pattern begins to emerge. That pattern is one of not being able to stop the run, and giving up a lot of points.

Now that may not be "all him", and certainly isn't ...... but if his defenses share certain flaws over the course of a 15 year career as both head coach and coordinator ..... then at least a good part of it has to be him.

Ever hear of a guy named Dick Lebeau. As a headcoach of the Bengals, his record was 12 and 33.

The difference is that while he was unsuccessful as a HC, he's always have very very tough D's.

Mike Shanahan is another guy that was a failure with the Raiders, but went to the Broncos and won two superbowls..

The one common factor in both cases was,, The talent they were coaching.

Shanahan failed as a HC in Oakland but succeeded in Denver.. did he change or was it because they had Elway and Davis?

Did Lebeau fail in cinci cause he was a dummy? or was it a general lack of talent.

My only point is, you can't make a general comment like that and not take into account the talent available for the coach to coach..

In all honesty, I am neither excited or upset. It is what it is. We'll soon find out if we made the right moves. Right now, it's just folks trying to look like they know more about football then the next poster.

Have at it! I'll wait and see. Again.

We will have a nasty secondary I promise you that.

That was my first thought as well. Having Jauron's forte being in the secondary is really going to aid along the progress of Haden, Ward, perhaps get Wright on the right track, prolong Sheldon Brown's effectiveness, and most hopefully, develop a complimentary coverage safety alongside TJ Ward. That unit has the potential to be a great strength. I understand the concern over his favoring of a smaller, quicker front seven, but as long as Heckert is stocking the pantry (one key run-stuffing piece we already have being Rubin) and keeps the girth of Rubin in the middle (hopefully find him a compliment who can get to the QB up the middle) and a solid strong-side DE like DET found with Vandenbosch and our linebacking core is going to be more free to aggressively scrape downhill and pursue the football.

I know we all fall into the trap about thinking, "HEY! This is the AFCN. You need to stop the run. Why the hell would we want a bunch of small, undersized defensive linemen?" To that I say, look at the defense and tell me that speed wasn't the most glaring deficiency on that side of the ball. We need more balance and explosiveness so our defense can be even more opportunistic.

This is a good hire. I feel better about Jauron developing players. If Holmgren and Heckert don't keep Rubin, and our DL averages 265 lbs. all the way across, then and only then will I be concerned and begin to damn this decision. In the meantime, a seasoned defensive mind like Jauron goes well with our young, new HC. It's another guy, similar to Holmgren and Haskell, that he should be very comfortable "bouncing ideas off of".

Just looked outside and checked. Turns out the sky is still up there, folks.

By this standard, 'gini should still be the coach. I would not have mind if gini and Ryan were back again with another draft under this FO. A new offensive philosophy was all I wanted.

With this all said, I don't recall what type of defensive philosophy Jauron had in the past. I know I just don't want the Todd Grantham experience ever again.

Also keep in mind the Raiders went 6-0 in their division and still missed the playoffs. Which shows you can dominate your division and still not make the playoffs.

Man...what a bunch of freakin' crybabies some of you are.

What the hell was so special about Ryan? Did you like watching us give up 3rd and 10 time and time again? The D was better...but still not all that.

And I don't know what you expected to get...the Browns have not been very good for some time now.

Let's just wait and see....it can't get worse.

Past records are not necessarily any indication of future performance. Can we at least wait to see how we look whenever football resumes before we start burying the guy?? Sheesh...

I do think that Mangini should still be the HC. But that's not the case and I'm moving past that.

Here is where we are today, Pat Shumur is the HC.. I don't know enough about him to love or hate this hire but I trust Holmgren.

It appears that Jauron is our new DC.. again, I don't know enough about him to know if this is good or bad. Historical stats aside, what could he do with Talent. That's Heckerts job. Get Jauron the talent then judge him.

In fact, I think Heckert is on the right track if last years draft and FA acquistions is any indication. So I'm betting that in time, he'll get the talent that meets what's needed to compete in the NFL in a SERIOUS manner.

Well I'm certainly not going to dig it up because I'm not driven to prove anything one way or another. But if I were I'd be wanting to know what those teams did to upgrade their front 7 specifically the DL while the DC was there. That's just one of the variables to be considered.

Another is who the head coach was during those times and how much of his stamp did he put on the defense which the DC had to run. That's another one of those dreaded variables.

Just those two variables above is the reason stats mean nothing. If I cared I'm sure I could come up with more variables and once I've exhausted myself in finding them someone else could bring up even more.

This is a team sport so stats mean absolutely nothing. A bad QB and a bad OL can make a HOF WR look like crap stat-wise. And those who focus on stats will say the WR really underachieved that year. Well, news flash, he's only one part of the equation and it's that way with everything the NFL keeps stats on. Stats are just facts. Facts that prove nothing. There's always more to it than meets the eye.

Unfortunately all we as fans have to go on is stats. It's the only concrete thing available to us. Also unfortunately stats are just facts. Facts that prove nothing. There's always more to it than the number.

Look how many bad teams rank high in passing defense. In fact, the Browns have been one of them several times. Well, upon further review we find that teams never played from behind and usually played with the lead so they just didn't pass as much. They were happy to just run the ball using up the clock. So, in those years did we have a great passing defense? No. Just good stats in the pass defense category.

You know all this. I know you do. But right now you're just grasping at anything you can to prove Holmgren an idiot for firing Mangini. Denying that doesn't even wash. You were a reasonably happy camper until the bloody Monday Mangini was fired and ever since this FO falls short of every one of your expectatons. Recently to the degree of complete incompetence in every possible way.

So here we are with a young, first-time head coach. Every head coach was a first-time head coach at one point and some of them came with less credentials than does Shurmur. And one big advantage Shurmur has that Mangini didn't is the help and advice he can get from that HOF head coach in the building. Holmgren couldn't help Mangini a whole lot because frankly Holmgren didn't know where the hell Mangini was coming from. How can he help Mangini's offense when he didn't even understand why one would run one like that anyway.

So we now have a head coach in whom Mike can at least relate to and help along the way.

Now on defense we have a guy with extensive defensive coaching experience and who also has been a HC several times. That is some pretty dang vast experience. That means Shurmur won't have to focus too much on the defense although he can help.

That was another mistake Mangini made. He had a good DC which was Mangini's area of expertise, but on offfense, where he didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground he hired a rookie, first-time coordinator of whom Mangini couldn't help find the bathroom door. The poor dolt was on his own in trying to outsmart the opponent and with Mangini's help all they ever managed was to outsmart was themselves. (Other than two games vs. NO and NE that I doubt anyone who wants to brag about those two games would like to see a rematch).

Mangini needed an experienced OC and could have survived with a less experienced DC since he knows defense. But he got it backwards. It makes no sense.

Shurmur needed an experienced DC and could survive with a less experienced OC since he knows offense. That's not backwards. It only makes sense.

In the NFL you just don't decide who you want as your coaches and go out and get them. Just like with stats there are way too many variables at play which means the guys you want may not be available to you for a lot of different of reasons. The reason doesn't always boil down to they think we stink so don't want to be here. Ryan got hired by Dallas. He was their 4th choice. It happens to everybody.

So we have a head coach and a defensive coordinator. We need an OC and ST guy still. It would be great to keep Seeley. But who knows, he may choose to go somewhere else to coach for an old friend with whom he is more familiar. Who knows?

Maybe there's a stat for that.

I'm cool w/ the hire. If we didn't get him, we would have gotten someone with even less credentials.

Having a young inexperienced coach, we needed someone like this.

Shurmur has a fresh GM, a President with tons of experience, and a defensive coordinator who use to be a NFL head coach. Shurmur needs that b/c in a sense he can pick the brain of each one of those guys around him if he needs help with anything.

Good job. I thought Jauron was staying in Philly.

Actually, the Browns were 14th in scoring defense last year ... so there really is quite a way to fall. That is the most important key to me, and I have outlined, with playoff teams as examples, just how important scoring defense is. Would you bet your next year's salary that we'll be better than 14 next year? I sure wouldn't.

Oh, we're going to suck defensively next year. There is no doubt about it. That one won't even be Jauron's fault. We don't have the personnel to run a 4-3 defense, and we aren't going to have enough competent players appear out of thin air to run it.

So, we will be stuck with a bunch of 3-4 personnel, and/or street free agents to go along with a draft pick or 2, and maybe a couple of free agents.

The defense will suck next year .... let's not have any illusions here.

Now .... I laid out why I don;t like the Jauron hiring ..... and I get "chicken little", and "the guy's 15 year career doesn't matter because that wasn't here", and "past performance doesn't ensure future returns", and it's startng to sound like a brokerage firm disclaimer.

Good Luck and congrats! Here's to you DJ! I'm pulling for you.

Hopefully our GM continues to find players for you and our Pres gives you time to mold em into a defense.

So.... anyway... Just a thought....You might want to live in rent for awhile.

im up and down on this hire...

i like the fact that we have an experienced defensive guy who has head coaching experience and is on the same page as everyone else in the building.

What i dont like is that Jauron seems to be a relatively bad fit for the AFCN. He is GREAT with DBs but his LBs and DLers dont excel and thats tough for this division.

Furthermore...he has always been pretty conservative. He relies on his front 4 to get pressure on the QB and uses press coverage on the outside. So...interesting.

on a side note...when holmgren came in...i assumed he was going to oversee things and make sure things were going well...Parcells came to Miami and hired his guys and let them do their things and was more of a consultant...holmgren has come in and is coaching without coaching...its not what i thought was happening and im feeling mislead...

and hes trying to turn us into Holmgren's team rather than Shurmur's team or a team that can win. Im not saying a holmgren team cant win...but hes picking a holmgren team whether or not it will be successful.

Well Jauron is better then Wannstedt...although not by much....

Not even close. Wannestedt not only smokes Jauron as a DC he's sitting at the finish line playing a game of chess while Jauron is still trying to figure out how to get off the starting line.

Wannestedt: Top 10 defense 3 years out of 5, #1 defense in the NFL once, top 15 four years out of the 5.

Jauron: A history of bottom half of the NFL defenses with a top 15 thrown in once or twice. Never a top 10.

Please guys, some common sense. Dickie Jauron is not a good DC. He never has been and it's highly unlikely after decades of getting set in his mediocre ways he's suddenly learned how to field an elite unit.

Oh as for the Eagles stuff? If he were their choice for DC they wouldn't have granted us permission to interview him and went looking elsewhere, they would have simply told him he is promoted. So let's put that spin job to bed.

He actually doesn't know............ As for Musgrave rejecting us, it is what it is. The only pattern that I notice is that he chose a team with a better offense than us to coach where he could have free reign calling the plays.......... He's got the best RB in the NFL on his team and good receivers, his chances to succeed right away are higher.

I'm sure we'll be fine. May be a coach on the Packers (they run WCO I think) can become our O-Coordinator.

The fact that Bill Musgrave doesn't want to join our team doesn't make me think the Browns are doomed......... There's other O-Coordinators we can hire

kingstev...Holmgren is "overseeing things" ...

He allowed Mangini another year, sticking to his beliefs that it is wrong to fire a coach after just one season.

Holmgren focused on buiding a front office and allowed Mangini the space to run his team as he wanted even allowing Mangini to keep every coach he hired.

Holmgren and Heckert upgraded the talent level for Mangini addressing several areas but especially the defensive backfield and QB position. Holmgren did not interfere with the way Mangini wanted to coach the team and simply "oversaw" the team from afar, allowing Mangini to do it his way.

Bottom line...end result...a second 5-11 season, which did not meet the Holmgren's standard.

Then Holmgren set about "overseeing" the termination of Mangini's HC duties and is now "overseeing" the hiring of a new coaching staff.

Holmgren did not mislead anyone...

Holmgren simply has higher standards when it comes to football than you and some other Browns fans who have become accustomed to losing seasons.

steve...Holmgren is hiring what he feels are the best people to turn the Browns into a winning team with a goal of competing in the playoffs and ultimately winning a Super Bowl.

I hope to hell he is building a "Holmgren" team...12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons...a record that is 50 wins over 500...3 conference Championships...3 Super Bowl appearances...1 Super Bowl Championship.

stevie...so in your opinion, Holmgren "should not" build the Browns into a team similar to the teams Holmgren produced when he was coaching?

No, we sure wouldn't want that kind of success here in Cleveland, would we?

Giniitis is eating away at some of you...it shows, over and over with each post.

What type of D does Jauron run? Is it a variation of the 4-3?
And will he rely on our db's and Lb's to be the core?...Just asking.

Explain how he's making this into a "Holmgren" team instead of a Shurmur team?

Do you really not think that Shurmur had any influence on who he wanted his D-Coordinator to be? Shurmur said in the PFT Interview that he's known Dick J for awhile and respects him.

How do you know Shurmur didn't ask Holmgren to hire Dick J instead of the other way around?

its not manginiitis...its that i wanna feel like we're improving and im not getting that feeling...

Also...mac, i wonder about the Holmgren team, because Holmgren isnt coaching it. can Pat shurmur coach a Holmgren team? Ray Rhodes and Jim Mora Jr couldnt. Now those guys arent very good coaches, and we're left to just trust that shurmur is and that isnt a comfortable feeling.

I really am not against holmgren building a holmgren team...but if he is i want him to coach it...not have someone else coach it because that hasnt worked yet.

logical?

He seems to prefer 2 big tackles in the middle and speed everywhere else. He preaches a gang mentality. Ward should excel with his run and hit in the box safety but we need a true deep safety to go with the in the box safety.

I thought "Holmgren's Team" and "Shurmer's Team" would look identical. Isn't that really the reason why Holmy got rid of Mangini. The guy had been pretty successful running teams one way (WCO, 4-3D), and Mangini did it another way. The other way wasn't really working all that well (it was improving, and all of that is debatable except for the fact that we were fielding a team that was struggling to compete), so Holmy is going back to what he's seen work. He likes the WCO and 4-3, so he brought in a guy that will do that.

Not that complicated.

Haha, you're preaching to the choir. Holmgren brought in Shurmur because they both were on similar pages.

It's King Steve that you might want to talk to

One focus, one philosophy and one direction. It is why I am willing to give this thing a shot. I think it is the recipe for success.

I keep forgetting the "General Reply" preface to my posts. Wasn't talking specifically to you.

i suppose that mostly then my question is...can shurmur coach a holmgren team?

i just examined my stance...and i can get behind the plan this way.

What we've done since holmgren and heckert coming here, is improve the talent level and we will continue to do that. and hiring shurmur and co is the plan to coach this new improved talent to success, i can get behind that.

we do have a dearth, and if holmgren is of the state of mind that shurmur can do a better job...who am i to argue...im only questioning because it seems as though we were on a path towards it...then we stepped off that path onto a new one...and not knowing what kind of path it is...makes me wonder.

if the plan is to get shurmur talent to coach and he is a guy that can make that talent win...okay. sounds good to me.

as of this moment...im to the show me stage...which cant really happen until FA, draft, and so on...

Shurmur and Jauron...can we get a smart guy for OC?

OC isnt just going to be a glorified QB coach...he will be the guy who prepares the offense in shurmurs imagine. gets the guys ready to execute his plan. so that when he calls it...it goes smoothly...we need a teacher as an OC next.

This from Adam Schefter's ESPN.com chat:

Quote:

Zach (Cleveland)

Adam, Heard reports this morning that the Browns were going to hire Dick Jauron. But on the Dan Patrick Show, Shurmur kept being hush hush about it. Do you have any news or information on the matter and if not do you know what offensive cordinator's they are looking at?

Adam Schefter

Zach: The deal with Dick Jauron will get done. He will be the Browns defensive coordinator. But here's what's going on. The Browns were hoping to announce their entire staff together, in one big deal. They don't want to announce hire by hire. They want to trot out everyone all at once. But know this: Jauron will be the defensive coordinator, special teams coach Brad Seeley is likely to wind up in San Francisco, and I'm not sure where the Browns will turn on special teams for a replacement.

I think I want to vomit.

I like this pick even less than I liked the Shurmur pick ... and that's really, really going some.

(PS to PPE ... we really need a "vomit" icon for this regime)

Well ..... get ready to start getting blasted on the ground .. 200 .. even 300 yards in some games ........ against inconsequential opponents like the Steelers .... and Ravens ..... and Bengals .........

That's a good way to win in the AFCN.

Lol, we gave up 200 yards rushing to the Bengals. Does it get any worse?

You need a xanax or something bro, you're more worked up than I was during the '09 draft.

Well considering the experience he brings (regardless of record) and realizing that many coaches are avoiding the Browns... This is a good hire.

Now the question that remains to be answered is, IS this an upgrade?

Time will tell.

The Cleveland Browns today named Dick Jauron as defensive coordinator, the team announced. Jauron has 26 years experience coaching in the NFL, including 10 seasons as a head coach. He spent 2010 with the Philadelphia Eagles as senior assistant/defensive backs coach.

“Dick is someone I have known for many years, who is an outstanding football coach and very well-respected around the league,” said Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “He has a tremendous knowledge of the game and is an excellent teacher. His experience in the NFL as a player, position coach, coordinator and head coach will be a huge asset to our staff and I am looking forward to having him as a member of the Cleveland Browns.”

“I want to thank Pat and the Cleveland Browns for this great opportunity,” Jauron said. “There were many elements of this job that were attractive for me. I have known Pat and his family for a long time, and in fact, I played for and coached with his uncle, Fritz. I believe that with people like Pat Shurmur, Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert in place, this organization is building a solid foundation. I can’t wait to get started with the Browns.”

Jauron guided the Eagles secondary as Philadelphia finished third in the NFL with 23 interceptions, including an NFC-high seven by cornerback Asante Samuel, who earned a Pro Bowl selection.

Prior to Philadelphia, Jauron spent four seasons (2006-09) as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, which followed a two-year stint with the Detroit Lions. He joined the Detroit Lions’ staff in 2004 as defensive coordinator before serving as the interim head coach for the final five games of the 2005 season. Under Jauron’s tutelage, defensive lineman Shaun Rogers earned the first two Pro Bowl selections of his career and defensive back Dre’ Bly was tabbed as a Pro Bowler in 2004.

Jauron was head coach of the Chicago Bears from 1999-2003 and was named the 2001 Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year. That season, the Bears’ defense ranked first in the NFL in points allowed (203) and second in rushing yards allowed (82.1 pg) en route to a 13-3 record and their first NFC Central Division Championship since 1990.

Prior to his stint in Chicago, Jauron served as the defensive coordinator for the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-98, helping lead the team to three playoff appearances in four years, including the AFC Championship game in 1996 and the AFC Central Division title in 1998.

Jauron began his coaching career with Buffalo, where he served as a defensive assistant in 1985 before coaching the defensive backs for the Green Bay Packers from 1986-94. In Green Bay, he helped mentor Pro Bowlers Chuck Cecil (1992) and LeRoy Butler (1993).

Jauron was a fourth-round selection of the Detroit Lions in the 1973 NFL Draft, and was also selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1973 Major League Baseball Draft. As a safety, he spent five seasons with Detroit (1973-77) and four with Cincinnati (1978-81). He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1974 as a punt returner after leading the NFC in punt return average (16.8). He appeared in 100 career regular season games and finished with 26 interceptions, including two returns for touchdowns.

A two-sport star at Yale University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history, Jauron set several school records, including most consecutive 100-yard rushing games (16). He attended Swampscott (Mass.) High School, where he was named one of the top-10 prep athletes of the 20th century in the state of Massachusetts by the Boston Globe. He also spent some of his childhood in Rensselaer, Ind., where his father was the head coach at St. Joseph’s College.

Dick and his wife, Gail, have two daughters, Kacy and Amy.
