Wait, I'm confused. Is Flacco happy about Zorn being fired?

Actually, I can't recall him ever saying anything. I don't even think I would recognize his voice if I heard it. lol

Flacco on Zorn's firing: 'I don't think it was a good decision'
NFL.com Wire Reports
Published: Jan. 29, 2011 at 05:06 p.m. Updated: Jan. 29, 2011 at 09:11 p.m.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco expressed sharp disappointment over the firing of his position coach, Jim Zorn, and labeled the move an "attack" on him after his solid 2010 performance.

"I also feel like a little bit like I'm being attacked," Flacco told the Carroll County Times on Saturday. "You fire the quarterback coach. Usually when your fire a position coach, it's because you're not really happy with how that position did. And when I look back on my season and our season as a team, I mean, we won 13 games. I felt like I had a pretty good year and you're firing the quarterback coach? It's kind of an attack on me, I feel like."

Flacco threw for 3,622 yards and 26 touchdowns with 10 interceptions -- good enough for a career-best 93.6 passer rating that ranked seventh in the NFL -- in 16 regular-season starts for the Ravens.

"I'm not happy about it," Flacco added. "They know that I'm not happy about it. It's not news to them. ... I'm not going to be happy about it, for a long time. This year will be what it is. We're going to be successful this year. I would have just liked him to be a part of it. He would have liked to be a part of it. And I think it would have been good for him to be a part of it."

Zorn was dismissed on Thursday after one season with Baltimore. Upon firing Zorn, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said he wanted to expand the role of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. Flacco understands this, but says he would have preferred that Zorn had been a part of it.

The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday that Zorn was fired following a seven-hour meeting with Harbaugh and Cameron. The coaches questioned Flacco's development this season, according to the newspaper's source.

Harbaugh on Friday called The Sun's report "inaccurate and unfair to Jim Zorn ... in no way does it describe Jim's relationship with the Ravens, and that includes with his fellow coaches while here and our players.

"Jim's departure from the Ravens will remain as private as these matters can be," Harbaugh told The Sun, "but we feel it's necessary to at least point out that this report is inaccurate. It is not true in any way, shape or form."

According to the Ravens' official website, Cameron and offensive assistant Craig Ver Steeg will handle the duties previously assigned to Zorn, who's out after only one season in Baltimore.

"I'm disappointed and they know I'm disappointed," Flacco told the Times. "I don't think it was a good decision, and they know that. I expressed that throughout the whole time it was going on, I expressed how much I didn't think it would be good for us. My opinion isn't going to change.

"I think Jim was a great coach, I think he was great for our team. I think he was great for me. That's how I feel about it."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Imagine that... the Ravens are involved in a blame game, looking for someone to pin their 2010 failures on.

It was all Jim Zorn's fault...not their HC Harbaugh, not the guy calling the plays, Cameron, not the Ravens defense...but it was their QB coach, Jim Zorn's fault that the Ravens did not make it to the Super Bowl.

You can forget the Ravens BS that we hear when the camera is on Ray-Ray's pre game inspirational rant, about the Ravens being family..a team.

Somewhere along the way the Ravens lost their family...we win as a team and lose as a team has gone bye, bye...the Ravens failure to make it to the Super Bowl this season was "someone's fault".

Sounds like John Harbaugh and Cameron got together and decided it had to be Jim Zorn's fault...it couldn't be anyone else!

They are having a very hard time dealing with reality in Baltimore...it was "the Steelers" fault...

Has Facco let the Ravens' brass know he's unhappy about this? Do they know, I mean do they really know?

And he was fairly clear in why he's upset... because he said it reflects negatively on him.. His quote that when you fire a position coach it means the position didn't play well.... so that would be on him... so his reason for not liking the firing is fairly selfish...

I don't' think it was selfish at all,, I think the kid is confused. he doesn't understand. By all rights, he had a decent year. Some would say more than decent. and yet, maybe the coach most responsible for helping him achieve that stat line, gets fired.

he's asking, what does that say about my production this past season...

And I think he's right to question it.

Browns may go without offensive coordinator
Posted by Mike Florio on January 31, 2011, 9:12 AM EST

As the Cleveland Browns continue to search for an offensive coordinator, the best candidate for the job may be no offensive coordinator at all.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Browns have hired Mark Whipple (pictured) to serve as quarterbacks coach, a step that’s being interpreted as an indication that the Browns won’t have a traditional coordinator to run the offense.

Whipple, who served as quarterbacks coach in Pittsburgh before heading to the college ranks, wasn’t retained by the University of Miami in the wake of the Randy Shannon firing. Whipple also was considered to be a finalist for the Connecticut job.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur, who served as offensive coordinator in St. Louis during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, has said he’ll call the plays in Cleveland. That reality necessarily makes the job less attractive to a candidate who would be hoping to truly run the offense.

The only potential concern is that Shurmur may be stretched too thin. If he is, he can always rely on team president Mike Holmgren to lend a hand. Especially since Holmgren seems to be eager to have more involvement in the coaching function in 2011.

Wow ........

And people damn near cussed me out when I said that Shurmur would be a glorified offensive coordnator.

insinuating that there was nothing the Ravens could do that the Steelers were just that much better than them (when in fact it was a close game they could have won), while adding in that you have noted you are cheering for Pitt in the superbowl.

just a lot of love you are showering on Pitt these days. And I do not like it. Nor do I like that you insinuate that I am posting drunk, but that is par for the course from you when you do not have a retort I suppose.

Awesome. Absolutely no reason to go after Clements, Rogers only has the #1 QB rating of all time.

Hmm funny all i can find is Mr. Whipple is the QB coach. Now i see lots of folks speculating that the browns will go without an OC, which they may very well do but I still think it is doubtful.

So when Shurmur says I am going to be OC and HC, then I will say wow thats stupid. until then lets not jump off the bridge because of words like *MAY, MIGHT and Could, especially when they are surrounded by the term leads to speculation. Damn Folks should know better.

I hope you're right, but so far there has been little to inspire a great deal of confidence.

Maybe there is for you, but some of us have serious doubts .... that get more serious as time goes by.

I still think we will see Zorn or Clements maybe with the OC/Assistant HC title. Little more money and no playcalling duty lol

Well, someone reported that a source said that Zorn was not under consideration by the browns ... for whatever that's worth.

I wonder if position coach to OC without playcalling is considered a promotion by the league? I know that promotion from player personnel to GM without roster approval, for example, is not considered a promotion that requires a team to allow an interview.

That's my guess as well. I'd like to see Clements hired with the understanding that he will take over play calling duties this year at some point, or the beginning of next season as well.

When asked about the head coach's decision to bring him on as the quarterbacks coach and the possibility of entering the 2001 season without an offensive coordinator, Mr. Whipple simply said, "Please don't squeeze the Shurmur."

Thought I already posted this...

Quote:

The Browns have hired former Steelers quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple as their quarterbacks coach and former Cardinals defensive coordinator Bill Davis as their linebackers coach, a league source told the Plain Dealer.

Quote:

The hiring of Davis represents a homecoming for the defensive assistant, who was born and raised in Youngstown and is the son of Bill Davis, the former Browns vice president of player personnel.

Davis was linebackers coach of the Browns in 1999 under Chris Palmer. He's been an assistant for 19 seasons with eight different teams, including the Steelers, Panthers, Packers, Falcons, Giants and 49ers..

In 2009 as Cardinals defensive coordinator, Arizona was fifth-best in points allowed. But in 2010, the team slipped to third-worst in that category. Davis was fired by head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was on the Browns staff with him in 1999 as special teams coach.

We also hired a WR coach...Mike Wilson.

Quote:

Wilson joins the Browns as wide receivers coach. Most recently, Wilson spent the 2009-10 seasons as the wide receivers coach of the Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL. Prior to his stint with the UFL, Wilson spent three seasons (2004-06) with the Arizona Cardinals, coaching both tight ends (2004) and wide receivers (2005-06). Wilson also spent three seasons as the wide receivers coach at the University of Southern California (1997-99). Prior to his stint at USC, he spent two seasons with the Oakland Raiders (1995-96) as the club’s wide receivers coach. Wilson began his coaching career at Stanford University, where he served as wide receiver and tight ends coach from 1992-94 under head coach Bill Walsh. A ninth-round (250th overall) draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1981 NFL Draft, Wilson spent 10 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (1981-90) as a wide receiver, where he amassed 159 receptions for 2,199 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. During his career with San Francisco, Wilson helped the 49ers to four Super Bowl titles, six NFC Championship game appearances and eight division titles. A native of Los Angeles, Wilson has two daughters, Samantha and Emma.

Cleveland Browns.com

So he was with the Cardinals when both Fitzgerald and Boldin were in the early stages.

Also, for what it's worth, the Las Vegas UFL team has won back-to-back championships.

Cleveland Browns hire assistant coaches Mark Whipple (QBs), Bill Davis (LBs), Dwaine Board (defensive line) and Mike Wilson (receivers)
Published: Monday, January 31, 2011, 9:35 AM Updated: Monday, January 31, 2011, 6:31 PM
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have hired former Steelers quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple as their quarterbacks coach and former Cardinals defensive coordinator Bill Davis as their linebackers coach, a league source told The Plain Dealer.

With the hiring of Whipple, the Browns may or may not hire an offensive coordinator. Head coach Pat Shurmur has already said he'll call the offensive plays.

Whipple spent the past two seasons with the Miami Hurricanes, serving as quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator and assistant to head coach Randy Shannon. Whipple was fired along with Shannon after the 2010 season.

He was quarterbacks coach of the Steelers from 2004-06 and was credited in part with the early success of Ben Roethlisberger, who went 13-0 in 2004 and became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to win a Super Bowl in 2005.

Whipple was an offensive assistant from 2007-08 in Philadelphia, where he worked with Shurmur and Browns General Manager Tom Heckert.

The Browns also announced the hiring of former NFL players Dwaine Board as defensive line coach and Mike Wilson as wide receivers coach. Board held the same position with the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks, while Wilson worked with receivers in Arizona and at the University of Southern California before spending a year coaching in the UFL.

does this mean we only have (from the traditional sense anyway) a DB coach and an OC left? (assuming we still might hire an OC anyway ...)

That's what my account says anyway. Just wanted to check.

Wouldn't we need a halfbacks/offensive line coach, too?

Those are the ones I'm interested in next. The secondary is Jauron's coaching forte as it is, so that doesn't make it a position paramount to getting top coaching talent.

Thanks for the update. I had read earlier that the PD (I think it was Mary Kay) had reported we were keeping our TE and OL coaches ... Can't find the official link right now.
