Which likely would've happened anyway, just more completely, sooner.

IMO game planning is overrated.

Not that it isn't important...I am just saying it isn't something that takes hours and hours of planning.

You have your stock plays.... Several plays you pull out that should work against the type of team you are playing....and maybe a wrinkle or two.

When you look at any of the good teams, they do the same stuff nearly every week. It isn't like you see a different team each week.

I think game planning is far more important than that but I just think it's very subtle.. yea you might have a pass play that you run 5-8 times every game and you'll run it 5-8 times in this game.. the game planning is teaching the QB and the OL signal caller to identify the defenses specific defensive package and make sure the blocking scheme is right and whether you need to keep the back in to block or the TE or whether you can put them all out in the pattern... to you or I it looks like the same old play we always run but when you get down into the details, the study of the other team and the seemingly small adjustments will determine whether it works or not.

We agree. It's why I said it was more the play we run v the play called....the qb has to get it done.

My only point is if Shurmer and Whipple are good, not having a "OC" isn't going to hurt anything.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

If you don't want to respond to me, then please, don't. No one forces you to read anyone's posts, nor do they require that you click the "reply" button.

At least I lay out coherent arguments, based on facts, history, and the past results people have produced. That is more than I get in return. I get ... "You're a Mangini lover", or "You just want the Browns to lose!" or other such garbage. Yes, it is garbage. So ... if you, and others who type crap replies like that don't want to respond, believe me, I won't miss you in the least.

Further, this is a message board. That means that people are allowed to have different opinions. I know that you think that everyone should see sunshine and flowers and beauty everywhere right about now ..... but many of us don't.

Even further, there have been a couple of hires that I liked, and have said so. There have been others I didn't like, and I explained why. I don't have to be a brainwashed zombie who loves everything my favorite team does.

I mean .. is that what being a "fan" is to you?

ok then, here's a question for everyone.

Why did the Browns interview people for the OC job, if they didn't plan on hiring someone to fill the position?

Did the people they wanted turn down the job, so we are on Plan B or C or more likely D now?

This was not the plan, and they are not sure what to do now it is going up in smoke. Mike needs to rethink this, and come out with a game plan for getting a good OC in here, soon.

Come on Mike, wake up and do your job!

So ..... we should give our opinion .... and then shut up no matter what anyone else says?

Well then, I look forward to your silence. (Yes, that is a joke)

Look, you are entitled to your view, and to aggressively defend your view with all of the facts, logic, and rationale you have. I am just as entitled to aggressively defend my views, which we all know, differ from yours.

This is a message board. That means that most of us do not just quote the post above our own and go "+1". we usually add our own ideas and/or opinions, or debate points in the post. I have no problem when someone debates honestly and aggressively in return.

I do have a problem when someone tries to imply that I said something I didn't say, like happened above. (not by you, I should add)

I've only heard ONE reporter speculate that there MAY not be an OC hired.

That was Mary Kay Cabot. The rest of the reporters are just running with it.

Not one shred of evidence points to us NOT wanting to hire an OC.. well, at least none that I've seen anyway.

So I feel as if we are all jumping to conclusions...

Like I mentioned yesterday, I don't particularly like this set up with no OC.. but to be fair, I don't think they are done hiring yet. So I'll wait and see.

I will be stunned...flat out STUNNED if we win more than 2 games next year. Combine lack of talent, unproven QB, total defensive rebuild, force playing rookies (due to lack of talent), a rookie HC...who just happens to double as our OC...in a division with Pitt and Balt making up 4 of our games? Yeah, good luck with that.

Shurmur might not last the year...and if that's the case Holmgren may not either (deservedly so).

Um, what?

Heckert is going to make Shurmur look like a genius.

Unless Colt is an ABSOLUTE DISASTER, we win 7 or more games.

Baltimore is on their way down and Pittsburgh will have a Superbowl hangover of some sort.

we play the NFC West next season (if there is a next season). that should garner us 2 wins right there minimum (and don't be surprised if Holmgren/Haskell put in some extra hours this offseason to help scout Caroll's Seahawk squad. I imagine that's a game they really want)

mac, until you take a good, solid reading comprehension class, just stop replying to me.

I said that head coaches do not act as their own coordinators, NOT that some don't call their own plays. There is a huge difference.

Learn to read, and understand what is written.

I'm tired of trying to bring you along with baby steps, from "a" to "b" to "c" ......

Learn to read and comprehend, then you can respond to me.

YT...you sure are having trouble answering a simple question ...

...How many HCs call their own plays?

Remember, I'm not asking about OFFENSIVE COORDINATORS...I'm asking how many HCs call their own plays. That seems to be the question you are afraid to answer.

The fact is......

It is "not rare" at all that HC call their own plays in the NFL...matter of fact, more and more HCs are calling their own plays and some have an OC and some don't.

Here is a list of HCs that called their own plays last season and/or have stated they will be calling their own plays next season.

Patriots HC Belichick..No OC

Bills HC Chan Gailey..OC/RB..Curtis Modkins

Chiefs HC Todd Haley...OC vacant

Cowboys HC/OC Jason Garrett...No OC

Packers HC Mike McCarthy...OC..Joe Philben

Saints HC Sean Payton..OC..Pete Carmichael, Jr

Texans HC Gary Kubiac..OC..Rick Dennison

Cards HC Ken Whisenhunt..No OC

49ers HC Jim Harbaugh..OC/TE..Greg Roman

Raiders HC Hue Jackson....OC..Al Saunders.

Chargers HC Norv Turner..OC.. Clarence Shelmon

Eagles HC Andy Reid and OC Marty Mornhinweg called plays

Browns HC Shurmur..OC vacant

Keep this in mind folks...it doesn't matter if you have an offensive coordinator or not, if the HC is calling the plays. Some of these HCs have an OC "in name only". In some cases the OC is helping the HC who is going to call the plays..therefore, you can have an OC but that does not mean he is the one calling the plays.

example...Chan Gailey Bills HC calls their plays and Curtis Modkins is his OC/rbs coach. Modkins helps Gailey with the offense but does not call the plays...he is an OC in name only.

another example...Mike McCarthy Packers HC calls the plays and Joe Philbin is and has been his OC since 2007.

The fact that last year 31 of 32 teams may have had an OC listed..IS MEANINGLESS AND MISLEADING when we attempt to determine how many (or how "rare") it is that HCs call their own plays.

The fact is, HCs who call their team's plays is a growing trend in the NFL and absolutely "not rare". I located 13 HCs who called their own plays last season and/or have stated they will call their own plays in 2011.That translates to 40% of the NFL HCs will be calling the plays for their team next season.

NOT RARE AT ALL...

mac, you seem to have a simple problem. You either twist what people say, or simply do not have the reading comprehension of a 3rd grader.

I never said that head coaches don't sometimes call their own plays. What I did say is that it is RARE the a team does NOT have someone who is the OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. There is ONE team that has no such person on staff.

Done with you. I refuse to continue this idiotic and moronic track you have gone off on. If you want to debate something I never said, then go debate it with someone else.

With all due respect Ytown ... and remember ... I said with all due respect (talladega nights anyone? ..) I think that you are just as guilty of rambling on for 3, 4 ,or 5 paragraphs at a time to try and make new points or argue sub-points of other people's points without ever refuting or validating someone else's argument.

The truth is you seem to just be acting like a contrarian for everything that is our current regime, and through various threads over the past week have expressed your gross distaste in all things holmgren, shurmer, west coast offense (if memory serves correctly), and etc.

I am completely for some of your arguments and I get where you are coming from, but I think you are more or less accusing others (ie: mac) of doing the same things that you have been doing. I'm pretty sure that it makes you a hypocrite ...

but remember, I said with all due respect

There was one team this past season with no offensive coordinator, which was the question asked and the question answered by YTown. 1 of 32 is a rarity.

I think we are talking about teams that are planning to not have an offensive coordinator during the season.

With that said, the Chiefs might as well not hire one as Haley will just chase them away.

I agree ... but some of the arguments on this board are directly related to everyone believing one thing based upon what a media outlet or two have "reported" or "suggested" ... and then we have people arguing whether we lost a coordinator or not based upon what someone from the PD thought ...

I don't run around calling someone a liar (which is essentially what mac is trying to say) by twisting someone's words around.

If I have, please point it out to me.

I argue my points, and you (and maybe some others) may not like my arguments, but my arguments are damn near always backed up with reason.

mac is just trying to stir the pot by trying to say that I said something I never did.

We call that lying where I come from. I don't appreciate it, at all.

So ...... reports filed by reporters are no longer newsworthy?

They can no longer be discussed or debated?

Well, there is a difference between an official report saying "the browns have announced ..." and "reporter X of XYZ news speculates ..."

Other than that I understand.

It is reading comprehension. The media doesn't necessarily lie but they can twist and bend things to fit their purposes and that purpose now days is attention.

Holmgren was asked 10 times if he was going to coach during his presser. Not one thing he said would lead anyone to believe he planned on coaching the Browns. So what does ESPN say in their 10 second report to get peoples interest. "HOlmgren doesn't completely rule out a return to coaching. Here the latest coming up on sportscenter"

While that statement was in fact true. It is very far from the meaning expressed by Holmgren in the press conference. The media put a racing stripe on a story to grab attention.

Now Adam Sheffler reports there is speculation that Shurmur will not hire an OC. 10 reports surface saying that there is a report that the browns might not hire an OC. While indeed they are true, it is quiet possible they have stretched the truth 10 miles wide just to grab your attention.

People ran with the likely to become OC stuff the same way. Hell one report said Front office personnel from teams around the league believes so and so is likely to become OC for the Browns. It had no source from the Browns attached to it but it was worded to make it sound all official.

These stories make for good discussion but lets not forget the actual facts when discussing them.

However, as I said in another post, some reporters get more leeway because of the reputation they have established.

If Grossi had said that "so and so will be the next whatever of the whatever team" .... well, I would say "I'll believe it when I see it". When Mary Kay Cabot, who is well established, with well established sources, says that "This person is likely to be named to this post by tomorrow" ..... well, that's as close to gospel as you get in sports reporting.

For a guy to go from "likely to be named" on the front burner, to kicked off the stove, well .. that tells me that something odd happened somewhere along the way. Then it happened, to a slightly different degree, a 2nd time.

Obviously we were negotiating with offensive coordinator candidates. Obviously we wanted to name an offensive coordinator. Now we are hearing that the Browns may go against general conventional wisdom and be only the 2nd team to go without an offensive coordinator.

They may, or may not ..... but the fact that it has been brought uop makes it a legitimate point of debate, and the fact that it has been printed points to the fact that it has been kicked around and picked up by someone inside the organization who sources the media.

The decline of the press has pushed many good people into tabloid tactics. People don't want to be scooped for a story so stuff that wouldnt get a sniff a few years ago gets put out there with hidden disclaimer words.

Most of us grew up in a time where if you saw it on the news or in the paper then it was considered gospel. That simply is no longer the case.

I think the internet has as much to do with that as anything else. Anyone can be a reporter, and there is no "news cycle." Everything is ASAP. Not that that's a bad thing.

I for one am still hoping the report isn't true. As far as I can tell, the earliest report I could find that mentioned the no OC possibility described the hiring of Whipple as "a move that is being interpreted as indicating the Browns may choose not to hire an offensive coordinator."

That to me is at least a bit different from, "a source inside the Browns organization has indicated they will go without an offensive coordinator." Or somebody did write that and I just missed it, in which case you can just ignore all this.

It's really the same debate that we have today that we had when the newspapers were facing transition to news on TV ...

If there is smoke there is fire might be the old claim, but whether it's on TV, the Internet, someone's blog, or even the newspaper (who prints retractions) ... unless something is confirmed ... it could all be skeptical or wishful thinking.

I'm still convinced that the Browns HAVE options at OC ... but for whatever reason we are waiting on something (and perhaps the superbowl to end) for that. But, just because something is or isn't reported, it doesn't mean it's the truth.

It's because many have stopped reading. It's isn't because you ask pointed, germane questions people are afraid to answer.

I still read because we are both fairly seasoned, long term members, and I enjoy a good chuckle.

Peen...I know you did not make the statement but let me ask you if the following statement is true...

..."Now we are hearing that the Browns may go against general conventional wisdom and be only the 2nd team to go without an offensive coordinator."...

Peen...Would the Browns "be only the 2nd team to go without an offensive coordinator"?....if Holmgren did not hire an offensive coordinator this season...

Hint...the answer is posted in the list of HCs who call their own plays !!!
