Salary slashing could bring a few more casualties. Steiny and Jake are probably the most overpaid players that are left.

That may be true, but Stieny is pulling his weight for the most part.. Jake really can't do that anymore.

Stieny being cut would leave a huge hole on the left side and with the huge holes we have on the right side, it may be more than we could over come in one off season.

So I'd bet you that stieny is safe this year.. but I wouldn't put a dime on Jake being here for the season.

Steinbach is under contract through the 2013 season. I predict he will be allowed to walk off into the sunset at that point.

I'm excited that St. Clair will be replaced by a younger athlete.

I don't think this is simply salary slashing. It is getting rid of players who don't fit.

I expect Jake to go as well, but being a qb, we are going to wait until we have another option in the pocket.

Someone (apologies for forgetting who) recently suggested moving Steiny over to RT and using Lauvao in his regular position of LG. This would make us very stout in the middle and very quick to the outside.

I am not a fan of Steiny at guard but I give the guy credit, he one of the best open space blockers in the league. Two RB sets in the I, each swings out on opposite sides would make for an interesting mismatch. One side you have Hardesty with Joe Thomas out blocking for him and on the other you would have Hillis with Steiny out wide.

I love creating mismatches and opportunity for big plays.

Cleveland Browns facing more roster decisions

February 10, 2011
By Tony Grossi, The Plain Dealer

Updated at 12:30 p.m.

CLEVELAND -- The Browns started their (biennial) roster overhaul by terminating the contracts of six players on Wednesday -- DL Shaun Rogers, DL Kenyon Coleman, LB Eric Barton, LB David Bowens, TE Robert Royal and OT John St. Clair.

All of the players are over 30 years old. And all but Rogers were signed to free agent contracts in 2009 by the Eric Mangini regime.

More moves are in the works. Who's likely to go? As a guide, here is a look at the roster and/or contract status of a number of key players from last year's team.

OFFENSE
* QB Jake Delhomme, 36: Due a base salary of $5.4 million in the last of his two-year deal. His days of mentoring Colt McCoy appear over.

* QB Seneca Wallace, 30: Unsigned. Might be the No. 1 backup and tutor McCoy in the West Coast offense if resigned. Might drum up interest elswhere when/if free agency begins.

* LG Eric Steinbach, 30: Signed through 2012 at a yearly average of $6.08 million.

* RG Floyd Womack, 32: Unsigned.

* RT Tony Pashos, 30: Signed through 2012 at yearly average of $2.775 million. Will be the starting right tackle if fully recovered from season-ending ankle injury and surgery.

* G-C Bill Yates, 30: Unsigned.

* FB Lawrence Vickers, 27: Unsigned.

* RB Mike Bell, 27: Unsigned.

* WR Chansi Stuckey, 27: Unsigned.

* TE Benjamin Watson, 30: Signed through 2012 at yearly average of $2.65 million.

* TE Evan Moore, 26: Unsigned. Finished season on injured reserve with hip/groin injury.

DEFENSE

* NT Ahtyba Rubin, 24: Signed through 2011 for NFL fourth-year minimum of $555,000.

* DE Robaire Smith, 33: Unsigned. Says he doesn't plan to retire after back injury.

* DE Brian Schaefering, 27: Unsigned.

* DE Jayme Mitchell, 26: Unsigned.

* LB Matt Roth, 28: Unsigned.

* LB Chris Gocong, 27: Signed through 2011 for $1.7 million.

* LB D'Qwell Jackson, 27: Unsigned.

* LB Marcus Benard, 25: Unsigned.

* LB Scott Fujita, 31: Signed through 2012 at yearly average of $3.025 million.

* LB Jason Trusnik, 26: Unsigned.

* CB Eric Wright, 25: Unsigned.

* CB Sheldon Brown, 31: Signed through 2012 at yearly average of $3.4 million.

* S Abram Elam, 29: Unsigned.

SPECIALISTS

* PK Phil Dawson, 36: Unsigned.

* P Reggie Hodges, 28: Signed through 2012 at yearly average of $645,000.

Fat albert has been trying to find a way out for a while.

why would the deadskins want another ... who plays when he wants to?

Although if he could be motivated, I wouldn't mind bringing in Haynesworth...?

While it's more of a pipe dream I bet it would be "nice" to line up against the browns where they had some combination of Rubin, Haynesworth, maybe Clayborn or Cam Jordan and maybe they get lucky and can scoop up someone like Romeus later ... have TJ walking up into the box .. it would look nice for a few years

Fat albert won't play in cleveland either. just like Rogers, he's a waste of elite talent.

I am hoping the shedding of two older DL will mean they are going DL heavy in the draft.

God, I hope so. But cutting a guy who WAS a major contributor before a significant leg injury, I see no reason to rush cutting him now and not wait and see how much more recovered he can get.

If you don't see the reason, then frankly, you are blind.. he's due a bonus of 500k and a big salary.

The other thing is that you don't know (neither do any of us) if they tried to trade him. Maybe they got no takers. And maybe that means he returns at a lower number.

You calling them stupid is a knee jerk reaction similar to the ' ham sandwich' comment of last spring.

Let it play out. you may find that you like the results and if you let it play out, you won't have to admit a mistake.

Let's also face one other fact here,,, Rogers hasn't been himself for 2 years.. you wanna give him more time? for what?

I don't think getting rid of any of the players they cut yesterday is anything more than what it appeas to be on the surface.. it's a youth movement.. One that has the added benefit of reducing payroll.

18 million was shed yesterday.. That's a lot of good money to get FA's right there. Guys that can have an impact for years to come and that fit the plans going forward.

Stupid? I think not.

ahh one persons Knee jerk reasoning is anothers sound judgement. washed up rogers is already in talks with the redskins and a few other teams as reported on profootball talk.com. I have no problem with any of the other cuts, yet with rogers devastating injury it reminds me of the blather when we cut lyle alzado because of declining numbers when he was surrounded by palookas and went to three more pro bowls with the raiders.

yes, like ham sandwich hillis, I am ready and eager to be wrong and I know you are willing to want to crown me with goat horns now. lets wait and see. My guess is the redskins sign Rogers and truly dump some real dead weight in Haynesworth.
I do not expect to bat at 100% accuracy and missed on Hillis. Thank God the browns made that move or maybe we may not have won any games.
I do not agree cutting Rogers was about anything but $$$$$.
Now the only people making the big bucks are JT and the Palooka Delhomme, who should have been one of the cuts.

Yeah we will see how washed up Roger is in Washington. SOS stuck on stupid.

I think Sheldon and Steinbach are over payed and Jake is Grossly overpaid. Not like we have lots of Dlineman where we can cut Rogers.

Well of course he is... does that, in and of itself make it a bad move to cut him? Hell No it doesn't.

Man,, you don't get it do you.. I don't have any desire to put goat horns on you.., you seem to do that by yourself..

Yeah, I agree that the money was a big issue and probably the larger of all reasons to cut Rogers.. But you gotta admit, he's not lived up to his salary for the last two years.. how much long are we supposed to accept subpar performance for top dollar? Add in the injury problems he's had.. and there you go.

But like trading Quinn.. if what we get for the money (in this case) is better than rodgers,, then I'm as good as gold on the idea.

You want us to wait and see,,, yet you won't do the same to see how it plays out..

Good luck with that logic..

Actually, he's frequently right. He was glaringly wrong with the Hillis thing. But Brown is oerpaid, Delhomme is amazingly still robbing Lerner, and Steinbach's performance has been debated by many. I think Steinbach's still pretty good, especially when he's asked to pull, but others have said he has underperformed in the last couple years.

I don't agree with anyone that says Stieny isn't solid.. he's not spectacular, but solid.. When you say Brown, are you saying Sheldon?

So basically, I don't agree much with Akronjoe....

I agree, Steinbach is not our problem. And Sheldon Brown was serviceable last year and important to our defense.

He got burnt by TO really bad once, but otherwise, he was decent against the pass and very good against the run.

I'm hoping we look into trying to move him over to FS. He'll be able to cover the TE and play deep zone. I think I read an article about him saying he would consider switching positions. This might be the year to do it, especially if we get Patrick Peterson in the draft (a stud to play alongside Joe Haden (another stud)).

Sheldon got burned a few times, but if you just leave the FS overtop on his side, then he is a valuable CB. He is good at being physical at the LOS (stopping those pesky short routes), and he can provide outside run support. So, I actually don't support moving him to FS. I want him to stay there (and move Wright to nickelback where his lack of tackling won't hurt him and he can try to get a few more INTs).

Steiny was solid last year. Now, in 2009 he struggled, but that was more to do with the style of line blocking (straight ahead instead of angle) than him (IMO of course).

If Patrick Peterson drops to us, I'll be ecstatic even though CB isn't really a need compared to other spots. Because of need, I'd prefer Dareus or Bowers to drop. It's likely though that Dareus, Fairley, Peterson, and Bowers are all off the board by our pick.

Sheldon's a very physical corner and is great at jamming the LOS, but having to have a FS cover over the top of him takes a lot out of what we can do with this defense.

And the problem is that every year he will only get slower and slower, less and less agile. Someone like Ty Law or Darrell Green (cornerbacks who played into their old age) were really good, and they continued to be fairly quick. Ty Law in the end used his intelligence. Sheldon Brown was never at that level.

I'm just afraid his drop off this year from last will be significant. He is gonna be 32 this year, at a position where speed is essential. Charles Woodson (34) was a superstar, and he has always been fast. Ty Law was fast (probably still is), same thing with Darrell Green.

Sheldon Brown never had that speed, I think he's going to really get burned if we continue putting him out there on the edge, especially if he faces a bigger receiver who can get off his jam quick and then get moving

I agree...I just think we have bigger fish to fry and it'll work for this upcoming season (DT, DE, OLB, FS, RT, RB, WR in no particular order)

Shaun Rogers may be one of the most underrated talents of the last decade, but the guy on the 2010 Browns roster was reduced to a part-time player that never practiced.

Browns G.M. Tom Heckert said that all the losing Rogers has done over the years has affected him.

“Shaun’s a different cat,” Heckert told Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “Shaun’s whole thing — and he’s stated a million times — is that he’s never been on a team that’s any good. Every team he’s ever been on has been bad. Right or wrong, I think it’s taken a toll on him.”

Translation: Rogers half-assed his way through his last season despite having the highest base salary on the team. So it was easy to cut him.

Rogers’ first trip as a free agent was to Washington. Rogers has suffered through ten straight losing seasons as a player and the Redskins don’t seem like the best option if he’s concerned with winning above all.

“I think if he went to a good team, things might change. I don’t know,” Heckert said.

Rogers can probably be a productive part of a winning team if he’s willing to take less money. Players rarely make that sacrifice, though, so Heckert’s comments should serve as a warning to Washington’s front office.

They don’t exactly have a great track record with mercurial veteran defensive tackles.

pit, GB, NE, rats, jets... five winning teams off the top of my head who would be served well by signing Rogers, if he really wants to play football. Maybe he doesn't get the huge $ but he'd do well on any of those teams if he decides he wants to play.

I wonder how Heckert likes having words put in his mouth? Looks to me like the writer half-assed the story. Rogers' problems were injuries and being 50 pounds overweight. His lack of conditioning made him good for one or two downs at a time, if that. If Rogers were to get down to 315-320 and his leg/ankle are healed, he would be a major defensive force for some lucky team, imo.

It basically all comes down to what Rogers wants. He wore out his welcome in Detroit with lack of effort and half hearted play. RIght or wrong, Heckert evidently just labeled him this way in Cleveland. Injuries played a part in it this season. But if he is carrying a loser mentality in the locker room, and we are about ready to draft a bunch of young guys for the D line, we do not need Rogers infecting them. He will be picked up again, wonder if he reunites with Ryan in Dallas.

IMO, Rogers half assed the whole season. Mangini's first year, he went to the press and whined about being snubbed. He pouted like a baby and with help from the press and ever negative fans, Mangini coddled him and he played well in spurts, but also never practiced.

Last year he sat out TC again, and practiced sometime maybe once a week. I believe his injuries were exaggerated, to cover up his discontent and laziness. I find it funny how he can have these nagging hip and ankle injuries, yet on some plays he looked very healthy. I believe that once Rubin proved he could do the job, Mangini took advantage of the situation, and gave Rubin the playing time. I truly believe that was the end of Rogers. I think he tank the whole season, but did it on the sly. I for one will not miss him.

Him not working in TC and taking the week off between games is not what I call being part of the team. IMO it shows that he was in it just for himself. Just like Haynesworth tried to do by coming in overweight, I think Rogers pretended to be injured worse than he was. I believe that if Mangini would have stayed, Rogers would have been gone just as well.

Bottom line is that he is old and unmotivated. I think that if Heckert brings in some young talent, many will see that the old crew Mangini brought in were mediocre at best.

Youth and Speed are the name of the game, and I feel that is the way this team is headed.

Yeah, I don't think Rogers ever played below 340 lbs in this League.
If you can get him down to 350 he was pretty effective.
Before his injuries I think he was up around 380 lbs... Who knows how his injuries might have added to that.

March court date for Albert Haynesworth

RESTON, Va. -- Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been formally charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from what police say was a road-rage encounter in which he threw a punch at a fellow motorist in a Washington, D.C., suburb.

Fairfax County police say the 29-year-old Haynesworth and his attorney appeared at a police station Saturday morning. Haynesworth signed a summons warrant charging him with assault and left.

He's scheduled to appear in court on March 31.

Police say a 38-year-old man told investigators he was assaulted by the driver of a pickup truck who was tailgating him on Feb. 2. The driver was later identified as Haynesworth.

Simple assault is punishable in Virginia by not more than a year in jail and a fine of $2,500 or less.

Some people were upset that we traded Edwards, and didn't get a whole lot for him even though he had an assault charge at the time, and dropped everything in sight. Then he went and got a DUI in NY on top of that.

For some reason people have this idea that people will turn themselves around and be great here, even if/when they turn out to be ineffective and/or trouble.

It seems to me that there are a few schools of thought in the NFL as far as troubled players.

Some teams, like the Jets and Bengals, seem to take anyone and everyone.

Others, like the Patriots, may take a chance on a troubled player, but always seem to have a Plan B just in case, and it rarely seems to bite them. They have so much veteran leadership that they can keep such a player in line. This year they went a little younger, Moss got out of line, so they dumped him. They got rid of him, added a player they wanted, and moved up in the draft while doing so. Just amazing.

Other teams, like the Steelers, steer clear entirely, and will even get rid of a really good player if he is a troubled player ... like they did with Holmes. (I know they kept Roethlisberger, but no team is going to cut a top 5 franchise QB in that situation if they have a chance to keep him on the field for them. A QB is too damn hard to find) Somehow they manage to fill the holes too .... which is frustrating as hell.

Then you get teams like the Browns. We "dabble" in the troubled player market. It never seems to work out for us ..... so I wonder why we keep doing it.

Maybe after this team is built ... with veteran leadership in place who can keep a troubled guy in line, well, maybe then we can add a troubled but talented type .... but man, not till then.

Age is not the only reason Cleveland Browns released Shaun Rogers and 5 other players this week

Updated: Saturday, February 12, 2011, 1:41 AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Age was the number one factor -- but not the only one -- in terminating the contracts of six veteran players this week, said Browns General Manager Tom Heckert.

On Wednesday, the Browns cut defensive linemen Shaun Rogers (31) and Kenyon Coleman (31), linebackers Eric Barton (33) and David Bowens (33), tight end Robert Royal (31) and offensive tackle John St. Clair (33).

"It's a combination of a lot of things, but age is the main thing," Heckert said. "One of our goals is to get younger."

Other factors included money, of course. The six players were scheduled to make about $17 million in salary and bonuses in 2011. Also, most of them didn't fit the new systems the Browns are planning on offense and defense.

Five of the six players were acquired in 2009 by former coach Eric Mangini to fit his schemes.

Heckert joined the Browns before Mangini's second season when Mike Holmgren took over all operations as club president. Heckert said he knew the price of bringing back Mangini for 2010 would have to be paid if Mangini didn't keep his job beyond one season.

"Once we decided Eric was going to be the guy [and return], we knew that was going to be the case," Heckert said. "And we were fine with that. We were trying to do everything we could to win and help Eric. And Eric wanted these guys, and that's fine. We understood that. So there's no sour grapes.

"If Eric was going to be the coach [in 2010], we weren't going to say, 'You're the coach and we're getting rid of these five guys.' That's not a good thing, either."

Rogers was the only player terminated who was not acquired by Mangini. He played his first seven seasons in a 4-3 defensive scheme in Detroit and would fit in the Browns' shift to that base alignment.

But Heckert indicated the team was weary of Rogers' attitude and unwillingness to practice. Rogers routinely did not practice until Friday, a light preparation day. He was always listed on the injury report with ankle and hip injuries, yet somehow was active for 15 of the 16 games.

Because of the club's inability to get Rogers on the practice field during the week, in addition to other injuries on the defensive line, coaches had to devise schemes that used as few linemen as possible because that's how they practiced during the week.

Rogers became a part-time player making a team-high base salary of $6.9 million in 2010.

"Shaun's a different cat," Heckert said. "Shaun's whole thing -- and he's stated a million times -- is that he's never been on a team that's any good. Every team he's ever been on has been bad. Right or wrong, I think it's taken a toll on him."

In 10 years in the NFL -- seven with Detroit and three with the Browns -- Rogers' teams had nine seasons of double-digit losses. The best record of a team Rogers played for was 7-9 -- his last season in Detroit. Overall, Rogers' career record is 45-115 (.281).

"I think if he went to a good team, things might change. I don't know," Heckert said.

Heckert said the Browns couldn't move Rogers last year -- release or trade him -- because his $6.9 million salary was guaranteed once he made the final roster of the opening week of the season. That's true of any vested veteran (four years or more experience).

Rogers was disciplined by Commissioner Roger Goodell at the beginning of the season for violating the league's personal conduct policy in April, when he was arrested for carrying a gun in baggage while trying to board a plane.

Goodell did not suspend Rogers but fined him one game check -- which amounted to $405,882 in his case.

"Whose fault was that?" Heckert asked.

Rogers played 15 games in 2010 and was 18th on defense with 17 tackles. He had two sacks and one blocked field goal.

Key players still on roster
The Browns started their (biennial) roster overhaul by terminating the contracts of six players Wednesday.

GM Tom Heckert told The Plain Dealer on Friday that no more roster deletions of players under contract are in the works.

LOL well then I count out the idea of bringing in Haynesworth. However, I am all for finding the best talent that we can, and if it means aquiring solid players who have at least a handful of years left in their career but need a change of scenery I wouldn't mind.

Rogers gone; addition by subtraction
Feb 9th, 2011 @ 8:02 pm by Steve Doerschuk

Here’s a draft of our newspaper take on five cuts today.

I respect Phil Savage for what he was trying to do with Shaun Rogers. That said, Rogers worked out miserably, and I never really comprehended his attitude.

• • •

The story

BEREA Mike Holmgren said when he made a coaching change that continuity would not be a factor in picking Eric Mangini’s replacement.
Likewise, continuity seems not to be a priority in reshaping new Head Coach Pat Shurmur’s roster.
On Wednesday, the Browns terminated the contracts of five veterans of were key men in the Mangini regime:
• Nose tackle Shaun Rogers, who will turn 32 next month. Phil Savage signed him in 2008 to be a huge factor in improving on a 10-6 season in ‘07. The Browns were 14-34 in his three seasons.
• Right offensive tackle John St. Clair, 33. He started most of two seasons but was past his prime when he arrived. He got blistered for three sacks by Denver’s Elvis Dumervil in his second game as a Brown.
• Linebacker David Bowens, 33. He was tough, smart, mature and, at this stage of his career, slow.
• Linebacker Eric Barton, 33. Mangini thought he was an ideal system teacher, but reports out of New York said he was washed up as a Jet in 2008.
• Tight end Robert Royal, 31. Opponents didn’t have to worry that he was able to get open. He couldn’t catch the ball.
The moves were made following meetings among Shurmur, General Manager Tom Heckert and President Mike Holmgren.
Heckert has authority over the 53-man roster, but under Holmgren, the team is following a consensus-building approach in which coaches and personnel men share ideas.
Shumur and Heckert worked together with the Eagles through most of the 2000s.

Never liked Rogers. He gave us one fluke year and then laid down. Happy he's gone.

Those other guys? Were they really on the roster?

Just what I thought...Rogers was milking his injury...being a lazy arse, refusing to practice with the defense, but showing up on Fridays so he could play some on Sunday.

IMO, the Browns should have cut Rogers before the season or at least when it became obvious he was not serious about playing football. The Browns tried to move him but no team was interested due to his contract.

I guess the Browns did all they could, opting to use Rogers when he wanted to play..that was probably the worst punishment the Browns could give Rogers..putting him on the field.

Rogers is nothing more than another Haynesworth..the rumors are that the Rob Ryan/Cowboys might sign Rogers, giving him his wish to play on a "good" team...I hope milks the Cowboys for all he can before they realize Rogers is just a lazy con man.

Hopefully the Browns will never write another free agent contract that traps the franchise with a worthless piece of crap like Rogers....jmho
