NFL scouts couldn’t attend Cam Newton’s random Thursday “Media Day” workout. But if they could . . .
“That was phenomenal,” ESPN’s Trent Dilfer reports via Bruce Feldman. “If scouts saw this they’d have been slobbering.”
With all due respect to my fellow scribes in attendance, Dilfer’s opinion may be the only one that particularly matters from this workout. Dilfer does as much homework as any analyst, and he’s usually a tough critic. We trust him if he said it was an impressive session.
Tony Pauline of SI.com wrote earlier this week that “at least” six teams rank Newton as their top overall prospect in the draft. It defies belief that six teams even have a “top-ranked” player at this stage, but the note shows that Newton has some serious support within the scouting community. Not to mention with Dilfer.
“His mechanics are so sound,” Dilfer said. “The ball just jumps off his hands. He made 30 big-time throws.”
Newton’s workout on Thursday ultimately doesn’t mean that much, but it’s a good sign he’s so confident in his development. It’s a better sign that he impressed Dilfer so much.
The next step: Make the actual scouts slobber at the Combine or a real Pro Day.

Slobber over Dilfer's opinion much? - to PFT, not you.

Dilfer needs to realize his opinion doesn't matter.
I bet the Bungles take a chance on Newton if he has a good pro day.

<3 this statement!
That being said ... let me ask the general board ... is there ANYTHING about this guy ... his speed, size, strength, playmaking ability, anything that would suggest he could be a franchise quarterback? I wont even argue drafting him at a specific position because that is way to arbitrary, but I would like some opinions on whether or not this guy could lead a franchise.
Is he a bust? high risk project? game changer? game winner? needs to be surrounded with talent and will be solid? will guide his team to championships / playoffs/ superbowls?
I think before you could say where would you take this guy hypothetically ... you gotta say in a quarterback driven league, regardless of price .. would you take this guy? Whether it's with the number 6, trade down and take him, move up from the second, whatever ... I dont care. I just want to know if you guys think he could be a winner or not in the NFL.

hahaha I love that.
Obviously I am not trying to stir the pot. In fact, it just isn't about cam newton or drafting a first rounder, its not about whether or not mccoy is the guy either. I think the most important thing about this team is building talent. That being said, I don't think I need to state how important the quarterback position is.
As much as I want McCoy to succeed, I don't know if I want to be reading/writing on this board in 3 or 4 years "Can't believe Cam Newton took his team to the playoffs again." or "Wow, we stuck with Journeyman McCoy *(or substitue in Noodle Arm - Ham Sandwhich - Colt McCant or any of the other nicknames I have heard on here) " or even that "Well ... Shurmur was the right hire at the time ... but dont fear ... we have ******* as the head coach now and we will get it right with quarterback X"
Don't want to make a big deal about it or profess my love for him. I don't even know if I would want to draft him if we had the opportunity. More than anything I just wanted to know is he a winner in the NFL or not. And why?

I bet the Bungless take a chance on him if he has a BAD day. Still better than the Carson sequel. But they deserve each other.

he very well could be successful in the NFL. I think he technically has more tools than Vince Young in the passing portion of his game, and Vince Young has been good when his head is screwed on right.
and therein lies the rub. Cam's dad can try to push as much of the blame on himself, but at some point, some of that blame falls on Cam too, no? With as many athletes who feel entitled and do not work at their craft hard enough to hone their skills despite having great talents, I do not trust that Cam will not become another one of these players. He certainly can succeed, but I am very uncertain that he will succeed.
At this point, I would rather have Cam Jordan than Cam Newton and it's not even close.

For some reason he just strikes me as a Jamarcus Russell clone. He had all the talent, just lost the focus. Would be worth a shot in the third, but not the first round. Just too pricey and too much risk. All that being said- i hope the bengals or bills snag him at the top of round one.

well, I wouldn't go that far. I mean, with JaMarcus, we are talking about the biggest bust in NFL history (Couch and Carr at least had slightly below average careers).

Right, plus I can't see Newton getting out of shape and ballooning up to close to 300 lbs either. He will need time to develop, but I think he could end up being a decent QB in the right situation.

I kinda get the feeling that Newton loves the game, and loves being a star .... where Russel seemed to view getting to the NFL as the end result.
I think that Newton has a much bigger upside than Russel did ..... and I think that he'll do well in the NFL if he goes to a team that will be patient with him, and mold their offense to what he does well.
It also would not surprise me to see him go in the top 5 of the draft.

I agree, but I think Arizona is going to look for a veteran QB to trade for or pick up one in FA.
With Fisher gone I can see the Titans giving him a serious look at 8.

I'd wish him better luck if he does retire then if he doesn't Can't say I could blame the man, but to give up on an opportunity to QB a team in the NFL is a pretty special gift imo.

That's true, but it's been done before.
He could also hold out with the retirement card in hand, and try to wait out the Bengals.
If he truly considers retirement an option, then he holds the power.

Here's Mayock's take on Newton. Quote:
Mike Mayock is the NFL Network’s featured draft analyst, but he was not in attendance for Thursday’s Cam Newton “Media Day.” NFLN sent Bucky Brooks instead.
So why wasn’t Mayock in San Diego?
“I really didn’t need to see the workout, nor do I need to hear about the workout. … I’ve watched five of (Newton’s) game tapes,” Mayock explained. “He’s got a classic overhand delivery, he’s got a big arm. You and I in gym shorts at the local high school can throw pretty accurately, so I would guarantee you (Newton) would look great in a pair of gym shorts.
“…But I would also (offer) one cautionary note, and that is the best Pro Day for a quarterback I ever attended was JaMarcus Russell. That same day, even though I admitted it was the best Pro Day I ever saw, I also said I wouldn’t take (Russell) in the first round.”
ESPN’s Trent Dilfer, of course, was at Newton’s Media Day, and came away saying the workout could push the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner’s stock into the top-five picks.
Mayock disagrees.
“To me, there are two issues with this kid,” said Mayock. “Issue number one is he came out of a shotgun (offense), and if you watch the tape it’s basically a very simple offense. … And secondly, most importantly, when you get to a certain skill level in the NFL, which this kid certainly has, at the quarterback position, what kind of kid is he?
“Is he going to be the first guy in the building? Is he a gym rat? Is he football smart?”
All day long, ESPN watchers were showered in Dilfer’s praise of Newton Media Day.
Mayock, meanwhile, is sticking by his guns. Just as he did on January 25, Mayock has Newton ranked third among draft-eligible quarterbacks in his latest rankings, which were updated Thursday afternoon.

Now that is something I can sign up for
Oh Washington. Mr. Shanahan. Doesn't Cam Newton look nice. You don't need that pesky #10 pick (Cam Jordan perhaps), next year's 1st rounder and Albert Haynesworth.

I sure as hell don't want Haynesworth.
I can deal with a lot, but a guy who flat out quits on his team is about 20 miles over the line. I don't care how talented he is, I'd pass on him every day of the year.

But he'd be back in his beloved 4-3 defense....
Just kidding, I don't want anything to do with the guy either.
I'd love me some Chris Cooley though.

There have been players I was certain I didn't want, Jamarcus Russell comes to mind... Cam Newton.. I think that is a huge risk/huge reward pick. I didn't see the reward with Russell but Cam Newton could be great, he could also be a total bust... I have no idea so I would probably stay away from him unless by some fluke he fell into the 3rd round where the risk has gone way down...

I'm fairly certain that he's a bust waiting to happen.
I only watched him play the one game, but that was enough for me. In a very simple shotgun offense, he looked confused and slow trying to read the defense. Any time they showed a close enough look pre-snap, he looked lost to me unless/until he got signals from the sideline telling him what to do.
That, and he was TERRIBLE under pressure.

Terrible under pressure, like when there are guys coming after him? Or terrible under pressure, like when the game is on the line?
It seemed to me he was good against both.
And I still think he will be a bust.

Both. He had moments where he looked to handle it ok, but I thought that in general, he looked too panicked when there was heavy pressure. You could tell that his instincts were telling him to just take off and run at the slightest hint.

I agree that when I saw a few games of him this year he looked like he wanted to take off and run. that being said ... if my memory is correct I still have a few highlights stuck in my head where he DID take off and made average D1 players look like fools. I also remember a few specific highlights of him making Patrick Peterson look like an average or below average player because of his athleticism as well as making Alabama look silly when Auburn was down 24 to 0 and then cam back to win 28 to 27 ...
Now I dont love Cameron Newton but I think it has been stated a few times I am very intrigued by him. I respect everyone else's opinion and I am skeptical of him as well, but I have started to like the guy a little bit more by thinking we could have a a 6'6 250 pounder who is athletic AND fast ... who has room to grow. People see Ben Roeth making plays and scrambling or shedding off a linebacker ... I like the idea that Newton could do the same.
The only real reason I keep thinking about Newton is because this starts to be the point in the year when some prospects are overhyped ... but others are over critiqued.
I think Newton has some major questions but they are about his integrity / character and his ability to translate the 1 year success into the NFL.
I also see a QB with a fairly strong arm, great size, great athleticism. Questionable composure (not that it's bad, just something that our scouts would have to evaluate), and the ability to win.
I would take the guy with a third and maybe in the second ... but it's just my opinion and I'm ok if others dont agree.

Does Cam Newton want to be just an NFL QB, or a Sucsessful NFL QB?
And by that, I mean, Is he going to put the WORK in the FILM ROOM to become a top QB. The difference between a JaMarcus Russel and a Matt Ryan isn't talent, it's DRIVE to be one of the best...
I don't think we're in a position to GAMBLE on a pick at #6 with the amount of actual talent available there...
I see Washington scooping him up, and ruining him, regardless if he's any good or not...
PS: Trent Dilfer LOVES Cam Newton... Trent Dilfer LOVED Derek Anderson... Next Question...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

He'll probably go middle-to-late in the first round....so we won't be involved at all. Heckert won't have to worry about what to do if he's available in the 2nd.
Now, if I'm one of the GMs for a team that needs a QB or has an old one starting and I'm sitting near the middle of the draft....I'd be very tempted. He's got more skill than most. Arm, size, speed, and wins. He's got a dirty history off the field and I see a little bit of T.Pryor in him (read one WR, maybe read another and then take off running - and even when he reads that first WR, it's like he's already preparing to run). I think Cam is worlds better than T.Pryor but wonder how he'll ultimately translate into the NFL. Oh well, not my problem.
Wish him well though.

Russel had talent, Maybe he wasn't "smart" enough to be able to learn to read defenses and such. But the fact that he never tried or cared didn't help..
I was just using that as an example, Cam Newtons pure TALENT got him through College, yeah great he made D-1 players look like fools, but does he have the DRIVE to become a PASSER in the NFL?
Mike Vick made people look a fool for years, but it wasn't until this year, when he started actually learning to be a QB, and made people look worse with his arm...

Interesting thought ... what if the guy winds up in New England?
Next generation athleticism ... has a couple of years to sit .. New England has 7 picks in the first 4 rounds and could gamble on him ... he already ran a variation of the spread, and played at Florida for a year. New England runs a variation of Urban Meyer's spread ...
like I have been saying. I wouldn't want to give up anything significant for this guy. ESPECIALLY not the #6 ...If the situation presented itself, however ... I would hope that our GM and front office THOUGHT about it even if they only would dismiss the entire idea and cross him off the board weeks before the draft. Leave no stone unturned and all right?
I mean ... did anyone (I cant remember if anyone here did) think McCoy could be had close to the end of the third round? What if out of the teams that take a QB... they see the question marks on Cam and we see Gabbert, Mallet, Locker go early .. Then we see Dalton, Ponder, Kaepernick and Devlin sneak up to the early 2nd (maybe even one in the late first?) ... I doubt Cam would fall, but if he is there in the mid 2nd ... an opportnity could present itself for us to move up with say a 3rd and a 6th to pick him up? Or if we had traded down and aquired a few picks for trading around in the 6th / 7th then we could package a couple of 5th's and 6th's to move around and get him?
Once again, not advocating grabbing him, but I do admit I am intrigued by the idea.

Are you suggesting that a team doesn't need backups or doesn't draft a player to groom for the future?
