Let me get this right, Colons brothers car is in bad shape, Colon made 2.2 million last year and he won't buy his brother a car because he's locked out..
What,, He can't afford to buy his brother a Chevy Malibu for 20 grand? LOL
I had that exact same thought while reading that article.
If Colon can't afford a pair of new, yet inexpensive cars on a $2 million salary ..... then there's something wrong with him. That was just last year's salary too ..... not prior years .... nor any signing bonuses he has received ......
It's the guy making $400,000 with 4 relatives who want houses, and 5 others who want cars that needs to worry ...... not the guy making millions who wants to buy one relative one car.
To put things into perspective ..... Colon made $2 million last year. Him buying 2 $50,000 cars cash would be like a guy who made $50,000 last year spending $2500 on a pair of cars. Both are 5% of their total income.

My post was just an aside that money does funny things to people. Those people are no ones responsibility but their own. No one owes them anything. Not even protection from themselves.
I was just sayin'.

The beginning of March used to be like my second Christmas, getting a few new FAs to unwrap every year... I guess this is what Chaunaka feels like..
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I would now want to see Colon's PDI after taxes before making any further harsh judgement,...and I already did that No excuse to not take care of your money along the way,...

Exactly my point (no offense to Ddub ) Quote:

Even then, if the $400K guy would follow the advice he gets from the league and the NFLPA, he's not going to buy those houses for family and he's not going to go broke. At $400k a year for a career that maybe lasts only 3 or 4 years, he's going to have to find work when he playing days are over.. no question about it.
But that's a heck of a good start.. Right after college, after taxes, about 200k in his pocket per year. He'll have started off better than any of us I bet..

Like they didn't know saving/investing was supposed to happen anyway,...I would think that part of the whole idea in making that kind of money is having the luxury to set your family up for generations after you're long gone.......
Ever hear the fact that most people who hit the lottery for $1million quickly go broke? Just because you suddenly have money does not mean you likewise suddenly know how to manage it.
We were watching that "Lottery Changed My Life" show on TLC or something last night. And there was this one woman, who won 20.2 million as part of a work group winning.
She was going through divorce when she won, but not officially divorced yet, and her X husband was trying to sue her for 39 million. Yeah 39 million. He "settled" for half of the 20.2. She is now remarried and moving on with her 10 million and mentioned that her X is broke after just 2 years.
10 million in 2 years, that's an idiot.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

An idiot for real.
It's a lot like some of these young players. They get all that money and their lifestyle goes sky high. And the fact that no one wants their lifestyle to go down, (I'm sure none of us do either), once it's at an all time high they "need" it to stay there or improve. It's hard to go backwards.
I read about one unemployed dude who hit the lottery for $114 million. Eight years later he was broke and looking for a job.
We all like to think that nothing like that would ever happen to us if we hit it big. We'd be a lot smarter about it. But that's easy to say because we're not in that situation. In truth, and it is the truth, we can't predict exactly how we would handle it.
Huge money is like a huge boner. Once you have it your thinking is skewed and you can do things out of character and have happy endings that don't actually end up being happy once it's all said and done.
My guess is the people who don't mess up the big money when they come into it are the same people who don't mess up the small amount of money they had before the big payday. Those who have either none or plenty of money to live on but are always broke and behind their bills are probably the ones who become the biggest losers.
Since the NFL is a microcosm of society there has to be a lot of football players like that as well. They do need to be protected from themselves but still, it's nobody's responsibility to do so. As Daman' pointed out, the NFL gives classes on that stuff and tries to give them a clue but I'd bet a lot of them just can't wait for the bell to ring so they can go out there and start spending.

True enough. However, I would certainly volunteer to be part of a scientific study to examine the effect of a sudden and significant windfall on MY life. I'm thinking of a 20-ish year study. That ought to do it.

I just wanted to say really quick, I actually went to U Toledo College of Law and I had professor Rapp.
The dude is brilliant and definitely knows what he's talking about. At the same time, he's pretty down-to-earth and in touch with reality. I'd definitely give him a lot of credence when it comes to stuff like this.
