Excl, Remember we need to start preparing. The West Coast of the US is next. All corners of the Ring of Fire have been hit and it's going in a clockwise fashion.

First, Chile. (8.8)
Second, New Zealand (6.3)
Third, Japan (9.0)
Fourth, we are next if it follows the progression. Though if it follows the pattern, it'll be a 6-7 on the scale.

But I did set up a emergency kit to have some food and water in the event one occurs. Everyone should have one. Even people in the Midwest around the New Madrid fault system.

I live between two fault lines.. The Elsinore Fault line when created the 5.9 Whittier-Narrows quake in 1987 and the Newport-Inglewood that created a 6.4 in 1933.

Edit: Opps I forgot about the 7.2 Mexicali quake

its really cool that the Japan earthquake altered the axis. Same thing happened with the earthquake in Chile. I think those things are exciting!

I doubt that people suffering through the aftermath share your enthusiasm.

very misquoted here. thats not fair. you are taking my quote out of its context of the axis shift and climate change and putting it into the earthquake and tsunami. i feel deeply saddened by what's happening in Japan. It's affecting our businees - Hino and Isuzu - and we know people that we talk to everyday that are dealing with this. shame on you

Even if that was the case ... next would be Alaska, which has far more quakes than California.

If anything, these recent quakes have made me a little more educated on the subject and I feel a lot better. For one thing ... the San Andreas fault isn't really capable of a 9.0 type earthquake. Worst case scenerio would be more in the low 8 range I think. While it would still cause tons of problems, we're not talking about the mass destruction on the level of Indonesia or Japan.

In regards to Tsunamis ... the San Andreas can't really generate them. It's a side-to-side type fault. The ones that really generate those super-tsunamis are subduction zones. In order to get a bad tsunami, the Cascadia Fault over by Seattle would have to pop. They are actually in much more danger than Cali is in regards to that.

Hey excl, did you read those articles about the looting and the violence and the crime that is going on in Japan in the wake of the tragedy?

You won't find any, because it's not happening....

In fact, google "looting japan" and you will get a bunch of articles that seem genuinely suprised that there is no wide spread looting.. I guess it's just something we have grown accustomed to in this country, when disaster strikes, go steal whatever you can...

nuclear reactor, nuclear reactor , nuclear nuclear nuclear reactor.

It all seems the same to me, the whole process, I don't care what anyone says, ... I don't remember 3 mile island, but I remember Chernoble, the same thing happened. ( what do i mean)

1 misinformation, double speak, half the people say its less than reported, and half the people say its going to be worse ... sky is falling ?

2 Efforts, the efforts to contain it, no matter how it is reported always get drawn out and guess what with each instance NOTHING WORKS it always reaches the worst case scenario, it just progresses over the course of several days.

Everytime one of these things happens, the only thing an avg person can do is try to guess where the wind will take the radiation and try to avoid it.

noo que larr , is noo que larr, and new clee er, is new clee er

but don't think they are going to contain this stuff, because they don't

everytime one of these events happens, they don't contain anything. They can put martian rovers on Mars, and they can put robots to roll up to bomb squad packages, but when it comes to
Nooo-cleee-ar reactors , that just affect half the freaking planet, they can't put a robot into the thing or even take pictures so they can know what is going on.

expect full meltdown, they need to surround and drown and try to save the nearby structures. Who would have thought 6 of those things right next door to each other might be a problem?

I would have figured Japan would have backup pumps and generators, well placed for almost any possible scenario.

Apparently one of the problems is that while the backup generators where buried underground, the fuel tanks were above-ground and were destroyed.

This thing has gotten more serious than I thought it would, much closer to Chernobyl then 3-Mile. It could still get a lot worse.

So much for building any more nukes in this country.

I sure hope that this situation doesn't cause people in the US to shy away from Nuclear power. That would be a mistake.

We're not likely to see this coupling of events. Possible, oh yeah, likely? I'd find that hard to believe.

And it will be argued will a "See what happened in Japan?", rather than acknowledge that it wasn't the earthquake that caused the problem it was the tsunami, which is not a very big threat in middle America.

Also stores that could open their doors cut prices on goods. No price gouging there. Also saw a TV story where people waited in line for 6-7 hours for gasoline without incident. They interviewed people and they were still polite.

Well, at the same time, if those "nice" things were going on in the US when a disaster hit, I'm willing to bet the news agencies wouldn't even cover them. It's more "sexy" to cover the looters than it is to cover the law abiding people.

That being said, the whole "entitlement" sense that Americans have is probably what drives our goofiness. A disaster happened, and since I'm an American, I deserve to do whatever I want to make sure I'm happy. If that means breaking into a store or burning down a house, then by God, I'm allowed.

Question to those that know more than I, would the best case scenario be, all reactors become maintained by "quick fix" infrustructure that stabalize the problematic reactors, and a commando team goes in there to secure the spent fuel rods in #3?

Hate to borrow the term, but it sounds like a kamakaze mission. At least on #3

Well most of the people working at the plants trying to keep it from going from bad to worse are most likely on a kamikaze mission and are likely to have their fates sealed. But in the end when things hopefully settle down ASAP, they will be remembered as heroes.

Glue works well.

The byproduct is bad, worse even than coal. But the amount of waste generated per kilowatt generated has be much less in nuclear than coal or other fossil fuel powered energy plants.

I have to admit that I'm a fan of nuclear power however the thought of shipping all of those spent fuel rods by rail and burying them deep in a cave in the mountains seems like we are just postponing some type of eventual disaster.

Yeah, that's the thing with nuclear power that concerns me, too.

Nuclear Power is very clean burning and very safe.

Except when things go wrong, in which case it's a disaster of epic proportions.

It seems I should buy the arugment that if given enough time, we could expect the results currently in Japan from every Nuclear reactor on earth.

Yeah. That's the only part i don't like. But, if there were a good alternative pertaining to where we keep the waste, we wouldn't be having this conversation and everyone would be using nuclear power. I still think it may be useful in the future as a supplementary power source to a potentially intermittent alternative power source like wind or solar.

Although, to honest, I'd really like someone to figure out this fusion thing ...

Who is making that argument?

I just think it stands to reason that if you are going to use nuclear energy, these things are going to happen.. how often and how severe, I don't know...

Just like if we keep doing deep water drilling, there are going to be spills, if we keep doing coal mining there are going to be collapses, heck people fall from wind turbines and die (more people have died in wind turbine accidents in the last 10 years than nuclear accidents in the USA)... but when nuclear goes, it has the potential to do more devastation in one event than all of the others combined...

Kind of like how an airplane is safer than a car.

But, when you hear about an airplane crash, it's big news because of the scope.

Put one barrel on each space launch and give it just enough booster power to put it on a course to the sun.

Last I heard they were not putting them in the mountain any more. That most facilities are storing them on site until the nuclear commission comes up with a definite plan.

I think that this will be our best option.
The trouble has been with the cost involved propelling something out of Earth's atmosphere. I think eventually we will see electro magnates guns that will be strong enough to achieve the needed speed and energy to deliver something out side of our atmosphere and on to the sun.

There are bunches of launches going up all the time.... someone just needs to take advantage of them.

Yes, cost is an issue, but I don't see how it can really be so much greater than building a bunch of subterranean bunkers and employing guards and security and surveillance and monitoring.

No - the major problem is the devastation if you have another Challenger during one of these launches. The radioactive materials would spread through the atmosphere and cover continents. Moreover, the material would be turned into dust which is easily inhaled and would magnify the danger to humans. That's why it's been impossible to launch even very negligible amounts of radioactive material (such as the ion propellant for the Voyager satellites) into space.

Yeah, that's one plan. I'd like to see people's reaction if it did happen since people flip when the trains carrying the waste go through their neighborhood.

All the more reason to get that space elevator built IMO. Why does the USA control Hawaii if not for the strategic advantage it allows us?! I need to stop playing Risk ...
