After tonight's game, I totally agree. Vancouver should be up 6-1.

Way to go Preds! How many heartbreaks can Vancouver take? Rinne looked like Hasek in his prime.

+1
Man, that performance in net was crazy! The flipping save in double OT was insane. 1-1 going to Nashville.

Boy, the wings are ticking me off. The last 2 years, mediocre goaltending knocked them out of the playoffs. Now they have stellar goaltending....and the defense is letting them down. They have no answer for the Shark's tough yet disciplined play. We need Scotty and the left wing lock back! Offensively they're getting their chances.

The Wings need to start putting the puck in the net, j. They also need the next two at Joe Louis to have a realistic chance.
How about Nashville tying the series against Vancouver? They definitely have a good shot with the next two games in Tennessee.

That's great! I have a soft spot for the Preds....in their early years, they were affiliated with the Toledo Storm for a couple seasons and I followed them. I always thought the Storm coach Claude Noel would eventually replace Barry Trotz.

Hey, that's the NHL.
Great finish last night in Philly (although I can't stand Boston). Side note: Why can't an OT game there finish with a clean goal? Last year, Kane. And then last night. Funny.
Until San Jose wins 6 more games, they're still choke artists in my book. If they can get to the Cup Finals, I think that gets off their back a bit.
I had Nashville coming out of the West in my original prediction and I'm still sticking to that. I think Vancouver still has a chance, but they're big boys tend to play too quiet in some games.
And like you said in the first thread....watching the Caps win 5-0 or lose 3-2 in OT is great theatre either way.

the goal they gave up to lose in OT the other night is very typical of them. that should NEVER happen in overtime. guy made a great pass from his own goal line. then they get caught with their pants down in their own defensive zone. it's just the way they are.
and i don't hate the bruins as much as i am sick of boston fans get everything, i mean 3 super bowls, 2 world series, and an nba chip in the last 10 years isn't good enough?
i've been very objective in the playoffs. i pulled for the hawks, but otherwise i have just been watching with no rooting interest. just rooting for good games.
but i have to say i have a soft spot for nashville, i like their coach, i like their style, i like that they are the little guy in this whole thing. plus their goalie is on fire. it's like giguere in '03 all over again (one of the few players ever to be on the losing side of the finals and win the conn smythe, that's how good he was. nobody argued it either)
i think the sharks look great. they just need 1 in detroit. i think a lot of their guys have calmed down too. thornton, heatley, those guys have really just kept things simple and led by example. they're great players that haven't been great in the playoffs, but they have been better. and niemi has stepped up.

How much of San Jose's success might be attributed to dumping Nobokov? As if that was what was keeping them back. Either his poor play or the other players lack of confidence in him.

definitely a big part. nabakov was horrible. some of the goals he gave up to the hawks last year in that series were simply unacceptable for a paid professional. several bunnies.
i think it also helps that chicago was not as good this year, detroit got healthier but not really any better, vancouver looks better but is really the same team of the last 3 years, nashville is the same team + mike fisher +rinne with 1 extra year experience.. nobody in the west really jumps out at me as a hands down cup finalist. it almost seems like the sharks could be the top team by default.

Odd, Washington appeared to have scored but I'm guessing the whistle blew for too many men on Washington during their power play just before it went in.
I'm watching it without sound so that's what I gathered. Should be interesting to see that later.
EDIT: And several minutes later the Bolts go up 1-0!

Some goals in OT are junky, always have been. It's one of the reasons overtime is so cool. OT can end so quickly. Another thing you might see is one team dominating the first eight or 10 minutes of overtime, then the other team gets a turnover or a lucky bounce, and then BOOM! it's over.
I'm rooting for the Canucks since they're the last Canadian-based team left. Would like to see the Wings make a series of it with San Jose because I don't like the Sharks, also was looking for better things from Washington.

there's few things in sports that are as big of a buzzkill than an overtime goal on the freaking PP.
lame. i think the ref should swallow his whistle unless a guy on a breakaway gets taken down, or someone's head comes off.

See, the Bolts don't really surprise me right now, they have been a streaky team all season, unfortunately taking a nosedive at the end of the season there. But most of these guys are playoff experienced with your bigger names having won the cup once already.
A streaky team with playoff experience getting hot again in the playoffs is deadly. Guys like St. Louis will play his butt off until that final whistle and it rubs off on other guys too. It would have been easy to give up down 3-1 in the first round but their scrappiness prevailed which also gave them the confidence boost. Now hopefully Gagne and Kubina can recover and return. I'm a bit worried moving forward without those two, especially Kubina. He was always one of my favorites and I was sad to see him go after winning the cup. Glad to see he has bounced back.

tampa is a lot of fun to watch. hard to believe roloson is 41. when you watch the guy play, he looks like he's in his late 20's.
just my opinion, but i think if he didn't get hurt in the finals against carolina, that the oilers would have won. changed the entire series.

Yeah, I agree. I didn't see that OT penalty last night, but heard about it today. It sounded like it was chintzy.... you're like me, sperg: you're used to the ref putting his whistle away in OT unless it's so blatant it HAS to be called.

I watched part of that last Caps-Bolts game.
What has gotten into the Lightning? They had, what was considered, the hardest road to the Cup, and they end up playing the toughest.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

The second round has been bleh other than Vancouver and Nashville. Tampa sweep, sharks about to, Boston won't blow a 3-0 again..
From an objective standpoint, I'm disappointing in these anticlimactic series'

Philly was terrible last night, didn't show up at all in what was essentially a must-win. I'm surprised Detroit is down 3-0 (poor Joey Mac), and that Washington is already done. Didn't see that comin'. If Vancouver can get rid of Nashville in a hurry and if the NHL gets the conference finals underway, maybe the playoffs will end before June.

as far as the caps go, it's not all boudreau, but he has to go. i put a lot of this on ovechkin too, as a captain, you have to lead by example.
a lot of people just assume that the captain is the best player, and in a lot of situations it can be, but it seems like washington put that C on him because he was ovechkin, and not because of the qualities that a captain must possess.

Detroit deserved to lose.....giving up a clean shot attempt by a defensemen with 4 minutes left, nobody marked him at all. And then that crap penalty in OT. It should have been a dive or penalty against the Wings if anything. I hope the Sharks can close it out in 4.
I picked the Preds and I'm still pulling for them. That might be the only series worth watching....well, if the Preds can win game 4.
I'm not sure if Boston is that good or Philly just didn't show up in this series. I'm leaning towards Philly giving up.

Philly showed up, their goaltenders didn't, it's a carousel of swiss cheese. One guy worse than the next. The rest of that team is solid. They have had to yank their goaltender in 2 of the 3 games against boston.
They got pretty mediocre play out of their goalies in the playoffs last year, they aren't even getting that right now.
It's funny because the bruins have 2 goaltenders who could start on playoff nhl teams, and the flyers have 3 idiots who should be in the minors.

I agree with everything in this post. I'm pulling for Trotz and the Preds. For a goalie playing as good as Howard is, there's no excuse.
Lampp, I feel for Joey Mac. I really think if Howard had a mediocre playoffs this year, he might have gotten a real good look next year.

detroit has always had a policy of not committing big money/long years with goaltenders, but i think it might be coming back to jump at them. the defense isn't as good as it was in '08.
that is such an old group. i saw my first nhl game back in '96 (year they would eventually go on to win first cup in many years) and a lot of those guys are STILL THERE.
they are an amazing franchise. so much pride. stability. but i think they may need to go off of their usual standards.

I called a Caps/Canucks final, jfanent. At best I'll be half-right. I have never liked San Jose and was hoping Detroit would have played better (San Jose has had their number the past couple seasons). I'd rather the Wings win another Cup than say, TB or San Jose.
Sperg: I don't think it would be wise to fire Boudreau right yet, I'd give it another year. Sometimes the best coaching move you make is the one you don't make.
BTW sperg: what did you think of James Reimer, the Leafs' rookie goalie? I saw a lot of his games after January and he is a solid, composed, technically-proficient goaltender. The kid got a lot of good instruction as a young'n and he's our boy for the future. Took us from 16 points back of a playoff spot to damn near getting one.

i actually talked to rocky (former leaf) about him, and we both agree that he's really good.
i like him a lot, he's tough. doesn't seem to be bothered by a ton. i think the most important thing is that his guys in front of him started playing better once he got out there, and it's not like he was behind some bad goaltending (monster and giguere is a pretty good 1-2) i think that speaks a lot about what those guys in the locker room think about him.
i always pull for the leafs to be better, the league would be better with them a force in the playoffs. too much tradition, too much history, too many good fans (sounds like a football team i know)
leafs management and their fans just gotta be patient. he's a young guy. gonna be a lot of up and down moments. they all go through it. marc andre fleury went through it for years, and he was the #1 overall pick in the draft. i honestly think you have your guy though.

Canucks look like they'll be putting out the Preds, & I can't say I'm surprised. They're too deep and have too much talent for Nashville to handle.
As for Detroit and Philly, both are likely done. We'll see if one of 'em can extend a series tonight, although I think it'll just be delaying the inevitable if they do.

Vancouver/San Jose and Boston/Tampa
i'll take it. i just hope mainstream sports fans take notice. you only have one of the original 6, and none of the traditional markets. but make no mistake, these are really really good matchups. i think vancouve/sj has a chance to be pretty epic. both teams are hungry, but have never won the cup, both have some obvious demons from years' past.
the other series with boston and tampa will be just as good. coin flip series, in my opinion.

Well the Red Wings live to fight another day, jfanent. I know you have a Wings' logo jfanent but tell me are you bias or not? I wanna see you put it in writing! . Still a long road back for Detroit, though. (I love it when the fans sing "Born and raised in south Detroit:" when they play "Don't Stop Believin" at Joe Louis. Philly went out meekly, they had no offensive push last night it was really one-sided for most of the series, this is one sweep that was a true arse-beating from the opening faceoff in Game 1.
