Severe storm and cloud rotation over me tonight. I was scared out of my mind. (I hate tornado warning nights - I can't sleep) Only damage for us right now...our trash can got blown over. We could hear it passing right over us. Scary *bleep* to me.

I love storms. Earlier today - with the tornado warnings going on, I was in our garage, watching west, while my wife and daughter were in the house - wife especially worrying about "what do we do?" (we don't have a basement)

However, I'm a bit nervous right now - looking at the radar - what's coming.......I can't say as I am looking forward to it. Truth be told, I'm a little worried. Right now it's black as can be - no wind, no rain......no nothing.

WTF is with this severe weather? I don't recall a season with this darn many tornadoes and so many of them being so darn destructive.

FYI, it is nighttime.

In all seriousness, Arch, be safe. I'm the same as you. I am really fascinated by storms. But, I'd rather not see one bearing down on me.

When I posted that, I could look to the east and see clear sky. Looked to the west - nasty.

Like I said - I like storms. Thunderstorms don't wake me up at night. During the day, I love to watch storms.

However, in light of all the tornadoes recently.....having tornado watches while I'm asleep worries me. We don't have a basement. At night, it's just me and my daughter here - that means "dad" is responsible for the safety of not just me, but my daughter as well. The radar isn't looking so great right now. As long as it's just thunder and lightning (which right now it's going crazy), I'm fine with it.

I just have a bad feeling. I'm sure I'll wake up tomorrow and say/think "what a wuss I was".

We got lucky with this batch. They're calling for more storms tonight with heavy rain, and strong storms tomorrow and tomorrow night. I've got 3 sumps pumping and I still have some water in the basement.

My whole back yard is laying in water about an inch deep all the way around. Ugh.

I have started getting a little in ..... not too much ..... but enough to be a concern to me.

I am going to have to regrade my entire yard once we get some decent weather. Can't really afford it ...... but it's a necessity at this point.

My brother said that his street has water just running down it. The storm sewers are all backed up. At least he's not getting tons of water in his basement.

Well - my "bad feeling" last night was wrong. That's a good thing.

I don't have a basement - but about a third of my front yard is under water, again. As much as 8 inches deep in some places. I'll take that.

There were about 6 fire trucks in Struthers, down the street from my mother's house, last night ... but so far I haven't been able to find out why.

I had a lot of water lying in my yard ... and my brother's street was flooded, but other than that we seem to have escaped largely unscathed. (knock on wood)

We get to call the insurance company....hail damage to the siding, and maybe the roof. I wasn't home, but a neighbor gave me a hailstone for reference. I would call it ping-pong ball sized. The yards all have pits in them where the stones hit the ground.

Lots of trees down a few streets over and many broken car windows. People are driving around with plastic taped over the breakage.

Glad I wasn't here.

I was actually coming in this thread to check on you, Michelle.

Looks like where you are got the worst of it around here last night.

The first line of storms stayed South of me, and the second line of storms stayed North of me, so I got lucky.

A lot of rain, and thunder and lightning, but nothing too scary.

Although, at one point, during the second line of storms, I looked North and the sky was turning green. Scary looking.

Glad everyone has made it through ok to this point.

As bad as the radar looked over my house last night, I don't think we even had any leaves down. Certainly no branches. But, not far from us (where BrownsBabe lives), there were reports of a touch down as well as some trees, etc. down. Crazy to think how random that is.

Looks like weather's going to be bad again today (potentially) and maybe tomorrow, but it's looking like this weekend is going to be nice, at least in the Akron area.

Aw, thanks, Top. I just talked to another neighbor that has lived here for something like 60 years and she said she's never seen anything like this. I think my area lucked out...could have been a lot worse.

Did you remind her of the damage the last time Jules cut the grass?

Sorry, I only joke because you are ok. Dents and car windows can be fixed. Glad y'all are ok.

I second that, dc. Glad everyone is safe - the most important thing - and hopefully the damage to property is minimal.

This really sucks!

I spent all that time and energy cutting out the fallen trees to clear the driveway of my in-laws the other day so we could get them out and into a hotel. Today I hear that some idiot or idiot company came by cutting some limbs and tossed the cuttings into the driveway of my in-laws! What freakin' kind of moron does that when it's obvious that people worked hard to clear that area? My father in-law spent his day clearing it again with a hand saw, he's in his 70's for Christ sake!

Seriously I'm out for blood right now!

I'm not going back up there until this weekend but at this point it could have been anyone. Unless one of the neighbors happen to be there to see it, I don't think I'll ever know.

An update on Joplin.

My wife and I went back up yesterday to help the in-laws with their storage unit contents, which were totally destroyed. We managed to find an antique piece of furniture, some pictures that luckily were in a tupperware type of container and dry as well as some glass framed pictures of the ship Pete served on in the Navy. Most surprisingly, the glass was not broken.

Driving around the city, the north side is totally devastated. Cars were tossed around like sticks and seemingly everywhere in various contorted states. The most devastation I've seen prior to this was the Okc bombing and for sheer size and magnitude of property destruction this far surpassing that event.

On an upside note, if you go back to the pictures I posted of my in-laws yard and all the fallen trees, then after clearing the path for their drive so we could move cars in and out some morons came and covered it again, the yard is now mostly empty of those trees and some of those trees were huge. A Baptist Church group of about 15 guys out of St. Louis showed up at my in-laws and asked quite simply, can we clear this for you, with chain saws and a backhoe they cleared the front and the back and would not accept even a small donation to their church.

One person apparently stopped and asked them how much they were charging for this work and they replied, "nothing, we're just here to help these folks". This guy was not so happy with their reply as he was trying to do the same and charging people for the work.

I don't know the name of this Baptist Church but I want to thank then anyway, even if it's only in this post.

Wouldn't the clean-up crews have been hired by some local/state government entity? And wouldn't they might have an idea of who cleared what streets, and when?

At least you might get some small sense of satisfaction from venting about it to some bureaucrat.

On a broader note, I've seen the TV images up here of Joplin, and heard some of the first-hand accounts from survivors. Man, what a horrible thing to happen.

You know, that's yet another thing that amazes me about these storms, the sheer random-ness of destruction. How something very strong is totally destroyed, yet this picture doesn't even have the glass broken.

Thank you sir. While my wife and I were never in any danger I appreciate the sentiment!
