i think it's a good move. the guy was not a bad coach. not as bad as he was made out to be when most of us had him as the scapegoat after last summer.

My opinion of him changed greatly when i found out how lebron acted in practice. storming off because he didn't agree with what mike brown wanted to do.

If miami becomes a perennial championship contender, then mike brown would probably be the guy to have running a team against him. He's owned dwyane wade over the years, and he knows the behind the scenes stuff about lebron, what makes him go, what makes him struggle, what gets under his skin, etc.

I hope he gets the job, he deserves it.

i know we all assumed phil was going to leave after this season regardless but did he actually announce his retirement??

yeah, he was always a good coach. he didn't have good end of game plays, but it's hard to discern how much of that was him and how much of it was LeBron refusing to accept anything less than the ball in his hands.

be interesting to see how he handles a group of egos rather than just one large one (though he'll have the large one too).

the Lakers has got to be his dream job right now though. not only does he get to have one of the best shots at stopping LeBron, but he also gets to have 3 7fters and 2 amazing wing defenders to put his defense around. And, if he could mask Wally's defensive deficiencies, he can mask Fishers.

Mike Brown is a horrible coach.

He'll be fired in LA in 3 years.

Guaranteed.

Mine too. He sort of had his hands tied. He had one player trying to call all the shots, and an owner telling him to let that player call the shots. When he had everybody on-board (for the most part), and playing his defense, they over-achieved. Sure his player rotations would sometime leave you scratching your head, but his regular winning percentage would put him at #5 all-time.

Will be interesting to see how he does with the Lakers. We'll find out how much the regular season success/playoff failure was him or Lebron.

i think the nba is a better league if that guy is at least coaching somewhere. pure entertainment.

love the tweets and stories outta bill simmons about how much the clipper fanbase thought of him.

I think my favorite was either the entire section taking bets on when the clippers would blow that big lead to the cavs (which they did) or when some people headed for the exits when the clippers were up 7 or 8 with am minute left and someone asked them if they didn't want to stay for OT. lolololol

Q: how can you tell who the worst coach in the NBA is at any given time?

A: he's the coach that had to take the Clippers job.

The Los Angeles Lakers are finalizing negotiations with Mike Brown to make him the 22nd coach in franchise history, a source close to the situation said Wednesday.

His hiring could be announced as soon as Wednesday afternoon, if final terms can be agreed upon.

ESPN.com

I think Phil Jackson was making $12 million. Brown will make between $4 and 4.5 million. I don't think the Laker idiots here in L.A. are going to be too happy this hiring.

Brown coaching the Lakers actually might work after he inserts a backbone into Gasol.

Pau Gasol with a backbone is still only an average defender. That leaves the Lakers with exactly one player who is an above-average defender (Bynum).

I have always been a closet Lakers fan, back to the Jerry West days,...I hope Mike Brown succeeds as much as some of us here hope LeBone fails.

Can't wait to get re-fired up though with Kyrie Irving at the point.

I'm not a Laker fan, nor am I a Laker hater. Same goes with Kobe, I didn't get on the hate-Kobe bandwagon when Lebron was in Cleveland (although his fans are whiny crybabies) but I hope he does well if he ends up with the gig. Good guy, class guy.

I'm a really big fan of Rick Adelman, and I can't believe the Lakers didn't give him a harder look.

you are saying Artest is not an above average defender? I get that Kobe has slipped on defense a bit, but I'd still give him top 15 of SGs as well (I think).

also, Shannon Brown is an above average defender, but I'm guessing he doesn't get enough minutes to qualify.

Ron Artest used to be and above-average defender. Not anymore. He's best when he's not even on the court. Kobe can't stay in front of anyone, but at least he knows where to be. If Shannon Brown was any sort of defender Jason Terry/J.J. Barea would have been slowed down at least a little bit.

As I watch Lebron and Bosh play together, I can only imagine how great these two would have been with the Cavs supporting cast.

I ask myself why Lebron ruined his image when he could have stayed in Cleveland, recruited Bosh, and won a string of championships?

The only answer I can come up with is that Lebron feared the prospect of Dwayne Wade joining the Chicago Bulls.

When looking at Lebron and considering everything he sacrificed to go to Miami (legacy, brand) I don't see somebody who did this for the sake of "team". Rather, I see somebody who was afraid that he couldn't win a title without Dwayne Wade on his side.

I just wish Lebron would have had more self confidence than that.

yeah, Kobe was doing what Jason Kidd has been doing these past few seasons. being in the passing lanes and just knowing how to be a nuisance particularly in help-defense. but, on-ball defense is neithers forte at this point.

hard to say on Artest for me as I saw most of the Lakers playoff games but not many of the regular season. he was shutting down Marion and Ariza in the playoffs (not exactly the toughest task to gauge that one though). if you're saying he's slipped, i'll take that.

from 82games.com it looks like his defensive production was fine at the SF spot (13.9PER for opponent) but atrocious when he was at the PF spot (23.4PER which is allstar PF level). that's a small gauge as well of course.

Having fun with Laker fans this week. Most of the are flipping out, but then you can tell them, "Hey! Since Mike Brown won 65 games ONLY because of Lebron ... If Kobe is obviously better, you should be able to win 75 each season, right?"

Still haven't watched a single minute of any postseason game to this point - what's the need?

the execution on that final play was horrendous. a cyo coach could have come up with a better plan. i know they didn't have a timeout going into that play, but during the free throw by bosh, thibideau should have had something better drawn up. that was embarassing.

like i keep tellin u guys. the faster you get past it, the better of you will be.

it is what it is.

I agree man. the guy has been gone for almost a year. This team could've been the cavs, but it didn't workout that way.

But nobody could be surprised that they're in the finals. this trio is the best group in a very long time. Unless Dwight and Paul form a team, they will be your likely champion every year for the next 5-7.

I don't know. First, Dallas has looked really good in the playoffs. Let's not annoint something that hasn't even happened one year yet.

Then, yeah, most of the better teams seem to be on the fall (Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Magic), but there are plenty of good teams out there and we don't know what one move may end up making a team better or what team figures things out at the right time.

The Heat have looked really good in these playoffs, no doubt. But, I think it's folly to just annoint them for the forseeable future.

The Bulls need a point guard. Their offense was abysmal. Totally unable to set up any plays. It was like "let's try and keep the ball away from he heat until 8 sec left on the shot clock, then whoever doesn't have a hand immediately in their face will fire up a shot. Unless the shot clock is expiring, then we'll just throw one up anyway."

Huh?

It's not Rose's fault.

The Bulls are awful. Take Rose off of that team, and they miss the playoffs completely.

at least the Bulls are getting the same treatment as the 2004-2010 Cavs now. best record in the NBA doesn't equal awful.

their team depth and defense doesn't really help them when it comes to battling the Heat. they needed a dominant strong center to stop easy drives for their defense and they need more guys who can create their own space on offense (the Heat actually did a really good job limiting the 3pt passing lanes and closing out on shooters. they needed another guy who could work like in-the-prime Rip Hamilton or Ray Allen to get open off the ball for Rose to get the ball to when the Heat collapsed on him).

Take one player off that team, and it does.

Like you said, look at the Cavs.

With LeBron = Best record in the NBA.
Without LeBron = 2nd worst record in the NBA.

Same would go with the Bulls without Rose (although, they wouldn't be AS bad, but they'd still miss the playoffs).

are you really following the narrative the national media is portraying? you are smarter than that Top.

if you remove Rose from the Bulls without replacing him with a NBA average PG, then they would be much worse without question (same as the Heat w/o LeBron or Wade). However, they still have a considerable amount of skill (and really in the East would they be worse than the Pacers?)

the Cavs w/o LeBron....w/o replacing him at SF in any way....losing all 3 centers from last years team (Z, Shaq, Andy-injury)...plus, all the other injuries for significant amounts of time (Jamison, Mo, Gibson) = 2nd worst NBA record (and should have been worst if Minny didn't tank at the end)

like I said, you know better Top.

Rose is a very good player. Watch the 4th quarter of just about any of those games and you will see he is not a good point guard. The Bulls offense was in total disarray. Either that or the Miami Heat have the best defense in the history of playoff basketball.

In the four losses against the Heat, the Bulls scored 10pts, 20pts, 17pts, and 18pts in the fourth quarter. They struggled to get a shot off and showed nothing resembling any sort of set play.

It's not quite that easy though.

Without LeBron, Z, Shaq, Andy, Jamison, (for a good part of the year) Mo Williams, Delonte West and Jamario Moon.

Those are the main components of the Cavaliers playoff season that were missing, for one reason or another, last year.

Tear the entire Center unit, "star" front court player, starting PG, and some backups out of any team and they will suffer horribly.

The Playoff team was:
James, Shaq, Z, Jamison, Williams, West, Varejao, Parker, Moon, Hickson, Powe, and Gibson.

Of those, only Hickson and Parker made it through last year without injury. Gibson was hurt quite often, and played 67 games .... but was frequently ineffective. Jamison only played 56 games. Varejao only played 32 games. Mo Williams only played 58 games between Cleveland and LA.

There was a whole lot more to it than "take LeBron off that team".

No they're not.

Actually, it's pretty hard to gauge whether they are right or not as they change their opinions depending on whatever way the wind is blowing that day.

Already owners of the No. 1 pick in the draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to sweeten their position by securing the second pick as well, according to league sources.

The Cavaliers are in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons about a three-team trade that would give Cleveland the top two picks of next month's NBA draft.

The Cavaliers would use the picks to select Duke point guard Kyrie Irving and Arizona forward Derrick Williams, the sources said.

In the trade being discussed, Cleveland would absorb Detroit's Richard Hamilton into the $14.6 million trade exception it received in last summer's LeBron James sign-and-trade with Miami, while also receiving the Pistons' No. 8 pick. The Cavaliers would then send that pick, along with their fourth pick, to Minnesota for the Timberwolves' second pick.

Cleveland would then buy Hamilton out of the $25 million remaining in the last two years on his contract, leaving the veteran shooting guard free to sign with another club as a free agent. Chicago would be one of the likeliest destinations.

Cleveland nearly traded for Hamilton at the February trade deadline with the intention of buying him out. In that scenario, Hamilton would have signed with Chicago after the buyout. The motivation for Detroit, which has been looking to move Hamilton for years, is mainly financial.

Whether the trade comes to fruition or not, the Cavaliers are all but certain to use the No. 1 pick on Irving, a favorite of the team's front office. The club's owner, Dan Gilbert, is a huge fan of Williams and sees him and Irving as building blocks for the future.

While one of the Cavaliers' greatest needs is at small forward, Williams, though viewed as a 'tweener, is seen by most league executives as a power forward. If the Cavs draft Williams and determine that he can't play small forward, they may deal power forward J.J. Hickson, who has good value on the trade market.

ESPN.com

Seems like a good deal for everyone involved. Besides the Timberwolves. But no one really knows what David Kahn is doing anyway. What's he going to do with picks four and eight? His team is already too young an inexperienced, so he's going to add two more young guys?

This is gonna be a good series. Miami benefited from playing a team with a young star and not much of a supporting cast.

Totally different in this series. Dirk isn't gonna back off, and he has experienced teammates to back him up. They have great outside shooting as well. Good interior defense.

As long as the ref doesn't revert to 2006 and start blowing the whistle for looking at Dwyane Wade funny, we should be good.

I've been impressed with the Mavs' defensive effort. Might not be enough to win, but its far better than I expected.

Also, say what you want about the Pistons game, or the Orlando game, or lack of supporting cast...LeBron never played this well in Cleveland.

Nobody can argue that Lebron never played this consistent on defense. He's manning up on 1v1, he was always 75% playing the passing lanes and ignoring the fact that he's one of the best athletes in the world and can shut down just about any 2/3 player.

The offense came and went in Cleveland, I am not gonna ignore that he did some wonderful stuff on offense in the playoffs for us.

I don't care if your teammates aren't the dream team, that's no excuse to not man up on defense. Makes me sick.
