Sizemore with a 2 run single.

7-4 Reds.

Getting interesting ......

Hafner comes through with a pinch hit base hit to make it 7-5 Reds ........

One on, one out ........

Let's go Tribe!

2 more innings to make it happen.

How does this kid have a 5+ ERA?

He's throwing smoke on everything. Even his slider is 90+.

It's nice to see him being able to put that 102 over the plate again.

Control problems earlier in the year caused him to be sent down to AAA for a month or so.

This was probably the first close game he's appeared in since the beginning of May. A nice confidence builder.

Thanks, although it's not much of a consolation prize after losing the first 5.

it's an absolute joke that Cabrera isn't starting this game and it shows what a sham the all star game and the process is.

Thanks Selig and thanks FOX. Epic fail.

It's not Selig and it's not FOX - it's ridiculous "fans". They know the name, they vote the name; if you're some half-you-know-what fan of baseball in NYC or Lincoln Nebraska do you even know who Asdrubal Cabrera is? Doubtful. But you do know Jeter because he was awesome in the late 90's so you vote for him - 25 times a day potentially. Then what's perhaps worse is when a manager selects a Carlos Beltran over Andrew McCutchen - yo Bochy, this ain't 2006.

People can blame Selig for a lot of stuff, but don't blame him for the ignorance of the voting public.

And I do agree with you Tribe fans, Cabrera should be starting.

Yeah, what is ESPN thinking, putting on teams that will give them higher ratings, and make them more money?

TopDawg,

Previous poster was saying it's the fault of the "ignorant voter" that Jeter is the All-Star starter. Why is the voter ignorant? Why is Jeter what they all know about? How much have they been talking about Jeter's calf injury on Sportscenter despite him having a pretty bad (.324 SLG% puts him 19th among SS despite playing in routine fly ball HR park) season?

Because it's ignorant that Derek Jeter is in the 2011 All Star Game... let alone a starter. People simply vote for the guy based on name and team - and that's ignorant.

That falls on the people, not Bud Selig.

Yes, I agree that the voter is ignorant, and that Jeter has no buisness being an allstar. My point is that the voter is ignorant due in no small part to the overexposure of the Yankees and Red Sox, and glamor teams in general.

Honestly, even Jose Reyes is getting extraordinary amounts of pub despite playing on a .500 team. When's the last time you heard ESPN talk about guys from the Braves or the Brewers? Or how about the fact that the perennially awful Pirates are competing in their division this year?

Why would anyone talk about Reyes? He's only leading MLB in batting average, hits, and triples. He's second in stolen bases and third in runs scored.

Well, Burnett's likely either going to the distance or going 8 and then Rivera will come in. If they're going to capitalize it has to be now with the dropped foul and wild pitch.

With as hard as it is for us to get wins against these guys, it sure is nice to grab game 1.

great win, tomlin was awesome.

i don't wanna bring the p-word up, but we're fans so it's perfectly ok to...

but a shortened 3 man playoff rotation with carrasco, tomlin, masterson isn't all that shabby. it might not be lee, halladay, hamels, but they will give you a chance, esp combined with the bullpen mafia

i just don't know if the offense can really get that much better. kearns came up big tonight, but he is what he is. duncan is what he is... sizemore and choo have been ?'s all year, hafner has been great but will he stay healthy?

I felt earlier in the year that we could use another arm, but I think I am with most that another bat would be more important.

I just hope that they take advantage of what they have and don't just assume that it will be this good next year, simply because next year was supposed to be it.

Yeah, I think that we definitely need another bat.

I suspect that we could see White back in the rotation when he returns from injury.

As a side note ..... congratulations to Josh Tomlin on becoming the 1st pitcher since 1919 to go at least 5 innings in each and every one of his 1st 29 Major League appearances. That's really something special.

He's one of the guys we actually drafted too.

i dunno if he's gonna be this great all the time, but he has an ace's attitude. was not fazed at all by the series of events after losing the no-hit bid. they got their big hit, and after that he got out of it.

He might not be "great" ...... but he's been very good each and every time out so far in his career.

I'll take that any day of the week.

I agree. I have read some articles on him, and the stat geeks just keep waiting for the floor to fall out. They always cite the fly ball to ground ball ratio as a sign that disaster is coming. Instead, they should watch him pitch.

Not only does he not get rattled, he is smarter than most hitters. He knows their tendencies, and he forces them into situations where they can't help themselves but to swing. His bevy of fly balls last night were poorly hit, weak flys; not smashed shots that were barely kept in the ballpark.

He also has excellent command. The ump last night had a very hitter friendly zone (for both teams), and that should have been a huge disadvantage for a guy like Tomlin who relies on precision and well placed strikes on the corners. That he pitched so well in spite of that is also quite remarkable.
