we lost my favorite Orlando Cabrera replacement (external one that was available at least):

HOUSTON (AP) -- Being 15 games over .500 and holding a three-game lead in the NL West wasn't enough for Giants general manager Brian Sabean.

The architect of San Francisco's stirring run to its first World Series title since 1954, Sabean is once again shaking up his roster.

With infielders Freddy Sanchez and Miguel Tejada on the disabled list, the Giants acquired second baseman Jeff Keppinger from the struggling Houston Astros for two Double-A pitchers on Tuesday.

San Francisco also called up Brandon Belt from Triple-A Fresno to relieve first baseman Aubrey Huff, who has tightness in his lower back.

Sabean hasn't ruled out additional moves, either.

"Without being harsh, this group just isn't getting it done," the GM said before San Francisco hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers. "We need to somehow extend the lineup any way we can, and we think this is an upgrade."

The Giants have had numerous injury problems in their infield this season. Sanchez is out indefinitely with a dislocated right shoulder and Tejada was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with an injury to his lower abdomen. San Francisco signed former Houston second baseman Bill Hall after Sanchez was injured, but Hall is on the DL because of a leg laceration.

Tejada, who has played primarily shortstop and third base, left Monday's 5-0 win against the Dodgers after straining his lower abdomen while trying to field a grounder in the third inning.

"We felt with the injuries we've had up the middle, (Keppinger is) going to give us some strength there, some versatility," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We needed some help there and Brian did a terrific job getting us a really nice player to help out."

The 30-year-old Keppinger arrived in Houston in a March 2009 trade from Cincinnati. He is a career .284 hitter with 30 homers and 200 RBIs with the New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, Reds and Astros since his debut in 2004.

Keppinger, batting .307 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 43 games this season since his return from foot surgery, is looking forward to playing for a team in the playoff hunt. He's expected to bat in the No. 2 spot in San Francisco's order.

"I get to go to a team that's in contention," Keppinger said. "This will be the first time I've ever actually been on a team that's been in first place or even with a winning record. It's definitely exciting and that's what you want when you play this game."

Sanchez, sidelined since June 10, was transferred to the 60-day DL to make roster room for Keppinger.

The trade for Keppinger is reminiscent of the moves Sabean made in 2010 when he signed Pat Burrell to a minor league contract, traded for reliever Javier Lopez and picked up Cody Ross off waivers from the Florida Marlins.

All three played key roles in the Giants' championship run, something Sabean hopes to re-create this year.

Reports continue to circulate that San Francisco will make a run at New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran, and Sabean hinted he was working on a "bigger deal" last week before turning his attention to Keppinger.

While trading for a potential free agent such as Beltran would likely cost the Giants one or two of their top prospects in a short-term fix, Sabean didn't rule it out.

"Quite frankly we're very lucky, and we know it, to be 15 games above .500," he said. "There's a lot of baseball left to be played, so it's all going to be a function of how much money we can take on, the fallout prospect-wise and whether ideally we're going to deal with a rental or not."

The last-place Astros received right-handed starter Henry Sosa and right-hander reliever Jason Stoffel from the Giants.

"You don't like to see a guy like Keppinger go," Houston manager Brad Mills said. "He's such a professional hitter. I'm sorry to see him go, but I'm happy for him. It's an exciting time, I think, for the organization. We got a couple good arms, it sounds like - not just looking at their numbers, but the reports on them as well. The two guys we got look to be pretty solid players."

Houston also purchased the contract of infielder Jose Altuve from Double-A Corpus Christi, and Mills said he will get significant playing time at second base.

The 25-year-old Sosa spent time at Triple-A Fresno this season, but is currently at Double-A Richmond. He is a combined 8-3 with a 5.51 ERA in 63 2-3 innings.

Stoffel has 13 saves and a 3.98 ERA in 32 games with Richmond this season. He is 4-6 with 42 saves and a 3.77 ERA in 101 career minor league relief appearances.

Houston general manager Ed Wade said he thinks Sosa could become a part of the Astros' rotation as early as next season.

"I think as we move forward here, if we have an opportunity to add prospect depth to the system, we're going to do that," Wade said. "It's about trying to build quality within to get to a point where we can have that core nucleus be developed from within our own organization. That's a very important aspect of what we're trying to do here."

Wade didn't enjoy trading Keppinger, but felt the move was best for his last-place team.

"We've got some infield depth and it gives us a chance to get Altuve up here and let him get his feet wet at the big league level," Wade said. "At the same time add the pitching depth that we're going to desperately need going forward."

The 21-year-old Altuve has a combined .389 average at Class-A Lancaster and Corpus Christi this season. He has 22 doubles, 10 homers and 59 RBIs with 24 stolen bases. Mills said Altuve will start at second base on Wednesday.

I screamed out loud when Santana struck out LOOKING with the bases loaded and noone out (inside my library-quiet office setting).

Thank God for Revere in CF.

3-2 Tribe in the middle of the 4th.

Sounds like Tomlin is throwing batting practice this afternoon.

watching the game. his breaking pitches are actually good. it's that this is the 2nd straight game for him where his fastballs have no movement. the batters are just waiting for a fastball and teeing them up.

he'd better buy the defense dinner if the team somehow pulls this one out because they have already saved him a couple runs.

Tied up.

The Tribe has the two leadoff guys (Top 7).

I forgot that today's game was a noon start.

Forget about last night and let's finish this road trip off in style.

2nd & 3rd, 1 out - foul popup on a ball way out of the zone (someone might want to tell these kids that when first base is open, they might want to take a couple pitches to see if the pitcher has any intention of pitching to them)

cmon Carrera, we can't waste Orlando's 1 hit for this week.

I sometimes wonder who Valbuena has pictures of. I wish they'd bring up Kipnis. At least he has experience playing OF.

I think we were hoping that Valbuena would have a hot streak right before the trade deadline to help boost his stock (along with the good AAA numbers from this season). We have given up on good players who hadn't peaked yet in the past (see Ludwick, Ryan on this year's trading block from a seller) so it's not unfathomable that he'd be apart of a package.

I expect to see Kipnis soon though. We need help any way we can get it (even if relying on a rookie is not the best practice)

I would guess that they want Kipnis at 2nd base only when they bring him up.

With Brantley out sick, you can't bring someone up just to toss them back a couple of days later.

Plus, Valbuena was beating the cover off the ball at Columbus. He was hitting .313 with 13 HR and 56 RBI.

Then he came up and is hitting .143.

*Sigh*

Radio team says that the front office is working hard on finding a corner outfielder/clean up hitter ..... but that they are not going to give up their future for a 2 month rental.

As painful as it is ..... I agree with that position.

x 2 The only way we compete year-to-year is to develop players and work within Dolan's budget. We have to have that pipeline of young talent in place or we'll set ourselves back big time.

Our offense is... well... offensive to watch right now. Too bad because we're really wasting some good pitching in the process (not necessarily today, but in general).

dang. Orlando has to make that play. Yeah, it would have been a very good play, but it glanced off his glove and he has to make up for his bat somehow.

oh well, will be down going into the 9th now with Orlando, Chis, Kearns, Valbuena due up. Ugh!

The problem with having 2 guys unable to play is that our bench is aenorexic now to go along with our starting offense.

The second Travis Buck got plunked they should've been buying a plane ticket for Shelley Duncan, and put Buck on the 15-day DL. Marching Valbuena out to play left is inexcusable. If you don't want to bring Duncan up, put LaPorta out there, but don't put a mediocre player who has never played the position out there in a must-win division game.

They couldn't bring Duncan back up. You have to stay in the minors for 10 days once you are sent down.

Indians' Sizemore out 4-6 weeks after surgery
Posted on: July 21, 2011 1:04 pm

Grady Sizemore needed another surgery -- but not on his either of his troublesome knees.

The Indians announced Thursday that Sizemore has undergone surgery to repair a sports hernia, which will sideline him for another 4-6 weeks. Sizemore was already on the disabled list with a knee problem, for the third time this season.

In a statement released by the Indians, Sizemore said he had been dealing with the issue since hurting himself on a slide in May.

"Knowing the two areas are related and also learning my knee condition is not serious gives me peace of mind going forward that I can finish the season healthy and help contribute to an exciting pennant chase," Sizemore said in the statement.
Sizemore has played in just 200 games over the last three seasons, because of various injuries.

With Sizemore out for at least a month, the Indians could step up efforts to trade for an outfield bat. According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, they have now asked about both Ryan Ludwick of the Padres and Coco Crisp of the A's. Both Ludwick and Crisp are ex-Indians.

Shoo out for the rest of the year AND now Grady is all but gone until early-to-mid September. I think they have to make a move now....but .265 Coco Crisp or .244 Ryan Ludwick? Yawn.

how do you think you hurt your knee but end up shredding your groin?

anyways, no $9mil option for Grady this offseason. we can start planning life without him (at least we can look at things going into the deadline too)

Release the Kipnis!!!

http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/news/pr...sp&c_id=cle

Quote:

CLEVELAND, OH-Today the Cleveland Indians announced tomorrow the club will purchase the contract of INF JASON KIPNIS from the AAA Columbus Clippers. To allow room on the 25-man roster, the Indians have optioned INF LUIS VALBUENA to AAA Columbus.

Kipnis, 24, has hit .279 (95-341) with 64 runs scored, 15 doubles, 9 triples, 12HR, 55RBI and 12 stolen bases in 91 games (.361OBP/.481SLG/.842OPS) with AAA Columbus so far this season. He entered play today leading the International League in triples (9), was 2nd in runs scored (64), T12th in RBI (55) and T17th in stolen bases (12) and has hit .316 (52-95) with runners in scoring position this year. He recently started at second base in the Triple A All-Star game and homered in the XM Futures Game. He will wear #22 and will be making his Major League debut.

Kipnis was the Indians 2nd round (63rd overall selection) pick in the 2009-First Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University where he was an All-America selection. An outfielder at Arizona State, Kipnis was converted to second base prior to the 2010 season. In 2010 he combined to hit .307 (159-518) with 96 runs scored, 32 doubles, 8 triples, 16HR and 74RBI in 133 games between Kinston and Akron as he was named the Tribe's Minor League Player of the Year (Lou Boudreau Award) and was named a Baseball America Minor League All-Star. Prior to the 2011 season, he was named the best prospect in the Indians organization by Baseball Prospectus.

Valbuena has hit .136 (3-22) with a runs scored in 8 games over two stints with the Indians.

To allow room on the 40-man roster for Kipnis the club designated INF JARED GOEDERT for assignment

Our infield is now really young.

LaPorta, Kipnis, Cabrera, and Chisenhall are the infield of the future .... the only question is whether or not Kipnis starts his Major League career at 2nd, or in the outfield. LaPorta is the "old man" of the bunch at 26.

The outfield right now is equally young, if not younger. Carrera, Buck and Brantley for now. They are 24, 27, and 24.

Man that's a young, young team.

If we can't find a veteran OF with some pop, Jerad Head is a possibility at Columbus. He's hitting .291 with 15 HR. He's another guy who would have to be added to the 40 man roster though, so someone would have to go to make room for him if the Indians brought him up. He could put Kearns or Duncan in jeopardy. (although Duncan is already at AAA, so he might be safer) He's 28, and was never really a "prospect" in the past .... but he's turned it on this year. He's also really the only OF of consequence we have at AAA right now.

B.J. Upton will reportedly be traded by the Tampa Bay Rays. The question: where is Upton going?

Follow @sbnbaseball on Twitter, and Like Baseball Nation on Facebook.

Jul 23, 2011 - The Tampa Bay Rays have been seen as a team that could be either a buyer or a seller in the run-up to the 2011 MLB trade deadline. Today's news — that Upton "will" be traded by the Rays before the deadline, in the words of FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal — certainly indicates that the Rays will be sellers of at least one of their most valuable assets.

Teams with reported interest in Upton include the Nationals and Indians, two teams that could be long-term stops for Upton. Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer Mark Bradley has suggested that the Braves might want to pursue Upton to bolster their outfield.

Upton, 26, has been playing for the Rays on a series of one-year contracts since 2007, but his price tag is getting unmanageable for the small-market Tampa Bay franchise: he is making nearly $5 million this year, and will only command more as he enters his prime.

We need a pure right-handed bat. The lineup has too many left-handed hitters. Being able to have Sizemore-Upton-Choo in the outfield is just an extra positive.

If Cleveland could go get Upton, I'm all for it. He's 24, getting ready to explode as a superstar IMO. Here's his bio on ESPN:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/5970/bj-upton

I'd try to get a new deal done (4yr $40mill) with him as soon as possible, then we don't pick up the options on Sizemore and Carmona and the Tribe will actually save money, reducing payroll.

CF Brantley
RF Choo
SS Cabrera
DH Hafner
C Santana
LF Upton
1B LaPorta
3B Chisenhall
2B Kipnis

SP Masterson
SP Tomlin
SP Carrasco
SP White
SP Pomeranz or Gomez or McCallister or Huff or Talbot or De La Cruz

Wrong Upton; Tribe are talking about B.J. who is not nearly as good. And BTW Justin Upton already has a long term deal.

Yeah, I don't know why we're interested in BJ Upton.

Justin Upton is hitting .293 with 17 HR and 54 RBI.

BJ Upton is hitting .229 with 15 HR and 52 RBI. He also hasn't hit over .253 in any of the past 3 years.

I'd take Justin .... I'd pass on BJ.

I'm not a huge fan of the Rays' Upton either. I will say he plays very good defense and steals a lot of bases with good power, but his average and on base numbers really slack. He's still young with potential, but he's not a superstar and never will be.

Chicago 1 Cleveland 0 after 3. Edwin Jackson vs Justin Masterson. Indians just left another runner stranded at 3rd.

I get the feeling the Indians desperately need a win today, even though they're only 1 behind the Tigers. It just seems to be slipping away ... after going 30-15 to start the season, they have gone 21-32.

You can only absorb so many injuries, and have your "ace" disappear, before it affects your play on the field.

We've been hit with injuries at 1B, 3B, LF, RF, CF, and P. Our star OFs (Choo and Sizemmore) are both out with injuries, and underperformed to start with. Our star Catcher has not hit anywhere near like he has in the past. 3 of our starting pitchers have missed time with injuries. Our primary choice to replace a starter is also injured.

I said at the start of the year that the infield of the future was at Columbus. Now they are in Cleveland. I just wish we had an impact OF in the works at AAA. The closest thing we have right now is Jerad Head ... but he's not even on the 40 man roster.

They're still hanging in ..... but it seems to get harder with each and every passing day.

You wish Hafner could step up and carry the team, but he's probably just not that guy any more. He's also slumping at the worst possible time.

RBI single for Carrera, scoring LaPorta from 2nd. 1-1 after 5.
