I am an avid fisher and have been looking for a bait cast reel that will cast a great distance. My friend bought a cheap one at Wal-Mart and wven with a significant amount of weight on it it wont cast worth a darn. He even turned the backlash control all the way down and still cant cast it more than 30 feet. What good is that. Im looking at an Okuma right now but just wanted to get some other ideas before I buy one.

I fish about 20 bass tournaments per year for the last 15 years, so i put my baitcaster thru alot of work between spring & fall, but for me work vs price ya cant go wrong with what I buy, I got two Quantum Energy's about 10 years ago and they still work great, cost about $ 100.00 per Reel, but there are worth it, I clean & oil every winter so up keep is important, Last year for christmas I recieved a Quantum Accurist which runs about $ 120.00 but is wel worth it. If your not looking to spend that much keep in mind there are cheeper but they cost are per Bearing, more bearings the better they cast and longer they cast with the proper adjustments, anything less than 4 bearings isnt worth purchasing, in my opinon, but I'm hard on baitcasters, if your just pleasure fishing and only use it a few times a month, look for a 4-5 bearing model, Quantum are the best, ..good luck and let me know what ya get.

turn you bearings adjustments on the side of your reel to 5 1/2 and keep it there, when you put on a new lure, hold the lure up to the end of your rod and release you thumb and let the bait fall to the ground, once it hits the ground, your spool should stop also, if it keeps going and causes a birdnest, your drage adjustment by your reeling handle is to loose, dosent take much to slow or speed it up adjust very little and try again, adjust it so when the lure it's the ground the spool also stops, it may turn a time or two and some line might come loose, but it shouldn't turn to much and release to much line, as your know your thumb control is very important to distance, keep your thumb off until right before your lure hits the water, this help distance, If your using braded line it's a whole diffrent set up even before ya start casting, let me know if you use braded and I'll give ya a few tips that seem to help me.

I probebly didnt tell ya anything ya dont already know, but hey a fishing thread on this sight, I have to be long winded...Tight lines...

I use a Ray Scott Supercast that performs well.

Think I paid around $140-150.

If you like to fish...spring a few bucks on something that will last 15 years if you give it some minimal care.

For catfish, I use a Abu Garcia. It cost a pretty penny, but you need something heavy to pull out hogs.

I definitely agree with Clay on the bearings.. in general, the more the better. I've been using Pflueger the past few years since my kids got me a baitcasting rod, I went and tried the Pflueger Purist which has 8 bearings and I've been pretty pleased with it, they run about 65 bucks. Pflueger has another called the Supreme that has 11 bearings and is supposed to be the cats meow but I haven't tried it yet seeing how it costs 170 clams.

OK...your guys got me going, True story here,

I was fishing a tournament with my buddy, here we are in a $20,000 Ranger bass boat, loaded to the gill with trolling motor, GPS, fish finders, top of the lline fishing equipment...anyway, we hadent got a keeper all day it was about noon, we were fishing a shore line lined with docks, flippen worms, jigs and tossen spinner baits, off in the distance we saw this kid sitting on a dock hauling in bass, crappie, brim and here we were haveing spending thousand of dollors to catch nothing and he was sitting there with a cane pole and a can of worms, catching everything in sight, needless to say us great fishermen were quit humbled at this moment.....We looked at each other laughted alot and waved at the kid who was kicking our butts with a cane pole as we went bye...that kid was a true fishermen that day we just looked like we knew what we were doing, .

1488...by the way, set your side adjustment at 5 1/2 and dont touch it ever isnt something I discovered, Kevin Van Dam showed me that, I was at a fishing seminar in Kalamazoo, Michigan at his dad's fishing store and was having trouble with a bait caster getting the proper adjustments, Kevin came over and showed me this, so I figured if it works for a two time bass master classic champion, it should work for me.....

Yep I do. I dont like mono. Years ago when my family used to go up to Canada to fish my father had a reel that would cast a mile. I cant remember what it is at all. Man what I wouldnt do to have that thing again.

I use alot of braded line, bouncing tubes off the bottom for smallies,

Braded line has no stretch so when ya set the hook all the energy or motion happens on your spool, ya some happens down by the hook, but it could mean a good hook set or loosing a fish, so what i do is once on my spool, I tie one end around something and spool it completely out walking away from where it's tied, a tree or somethign keeping a tight stright line, slowly keeping the line tight usually about 50 -75 yards away, then i slowly reel the line back onto my spool, keeping it tight on my spool, walking closer and closer to where it tied, this gets the line on my spool tight and when i set the hook it moves the energy less on my spool and more on the hook where I want it, this also keep the line tight and improves casting and keeps the dreaded birdsnest to a minumin, Sometimes I use on my spool the bottom half mono and the top half or even 3/4 braded, doing the same with both to keep a tight line and get a good hook set. When i set the hook on fish, I make then crossed eyed...

Here's my new baby. I caught the fly fishing bug last summer. I'll be in the Maumee jigging for 'eyes this spring though. I love that zoo.
