Cleveland Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi begins camp with a cast on left foot and ankle Published: Saturday, July 30, 2011, 2:22 PM Mary Kay Cabot, CLEVELAND -- Browns training camp began with a mild surprise Saturday morning -- the sight of receiver Mohamed Massaquoi hobbling around with a walking cast on his left leg, from foot to knee. But Browns coach Pat Shurmur said that the injuries to Massaquoi (foot) and guard Eric Steinbach i(knee) are "nothing we feel is serious.'' Both players are on the non-football injury list and still active. "(Massaquoi's) is a little foot deal,'' said Shurmur. "We'll evaluate it as it goes and make sure it's just right.'' Shurmur said the timeline of Massaquoi's injury is a little fuzzy and didn't specify how it happened. Massaquoi, who caught balls from the JUGS machine after practice, declined to discuss the injury. But he participated fully in Camp Colt IV in Austin, Texas July 10-12 and seemed just fine running routes and catching passes. He also discussed how hard he worked in the offseason, learning from Pro Bowl receivers such as Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson. Quarterback Colt McCoy said it's "unfortunate Mohamed will be out a little while'' but was grateful the two worked so hard together during the offseason. Massaquoi attended all four of the offensive skill sessions. In his absence, the two starting wideouts in practice were Brian Robiskie and Josh Cribbs. Steinbach was replaced in the lineup by first-year guard Pat Murray, signed last year as a free agent. The Browns also had one injury that occurred the first day when tight end Ben Watson got kneed in the back of the head and got up slowly. He walked gingerly into the locker room with the trainers and didn't return. The Browns will most likely check Watson for a concussion. In other news and notes from the first day: * No. 1 pick Phil Taylor held out the first day while the two sides continue to try work out a deal. Shurmur said he'd love to have him here and that they'll work hard to catch him up. * Newly-signed defensive end Jayme Mitchell was not in attendance, but Shurmur called his two-year deal "a big signing.'' He'll work at left end. * Shurmur acknowledged that the Browns will "look in that direction'' for a new cornerback to replace Eric Wright. * Kicker Phil Dawson admitted that he didn't think he'd be back this season and that he's not looking beyond his one-year franchise contract. "I appreciated the outpouring of support from the fans,'' he said. * The newly-signed free agents, both unrestricted and exclusive rights, are unable to practice until Aug. 4 when the new league year begins. Dawson admitted that he's frustrated by being here but not being able to kick. The list includes Evan Moore, Usama Young and Brandon Jackson. * Shurmur said Young will challenge for the starting free safety job. Scott Fujita, who played with him in New Orleans, also praised him and said he's ready for an increased role. * Running back Montario Hardesty, coming off the torn ACL, looked solid running the ball, catching passes and sometimes being split wide. * It was evident that the offensive players spent plenty of time working together in the offseason. Although there were a few misfires, it was an incredibly smooth practice for a bunch of players that just met their coach in the past few days. McCoy was right -- all the hard work paid off. * A number of receivers caught fine passes, including Jordan Norwood, Josh Cribbs, Brian Robiskie, L.J. Castile and Greg Little. * The Browns will not pursue a trade for Eagles Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel, who's rumored to be on the block now that the Eagles have Nnamdi Asomugha. Carolina free agent cornerback Richard Marshall is off the market after signing a one-year deal with the Cardinals today. web page

Jayme Mitchell must be freakin' awesome.
I have never heard so much praise or so much hype before for a player who never plays.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

That's pretty funny.
But, what are they going to say, that he's a bum? But I get what you're saying. Hopefully he lives up to the hype.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Boy ain't that the truth.
Getting back to the article, nice to see the offense humming along already. I guess that the Camp Colts did help ... at least to this point.

There are two things that really made me feel good. Hardesty looking good and the Offense running smooth,.
Sorry to hear about the injuries.. that's never fun but the way they portray them, it doesn't sound too serious. I hope that's the case.
I never wanna hear the words "he's got a tini tiny bone fracture" again,

Also, Jordan Norwood played in the slot when a three-receiver set was employed. Here is the first-team defense from the opening practice: Defensive line — left end Brian Sanford, left tackle Scott Paxson, right tackle Ahtyba Rubin and right end Sheard; Linebackers — strongside linebacker Scott Fujita, middle linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, weakside linebacker Chris Gocong; Cornerbacks — Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown; Safeties — strong safety T.J. Ward and free safety Mike Adams. Practice highlights and lowlights: Wide receivers Johnathan Haggerty and Carlton Mitchell had several catches, though Mitchell dropped one pass thrown right at his chest. … Little also had a blatant drop. … Ward broke up a short pass intended for Watson. … D'Qwell Jackson intercepted a pass thrown by McCoy during a seven-on-seven session. … McCoy responded with an intermediate completion to Norwood. … Third-string quarterback Jarrett Brown aired out a deep pass and hit Cribbs in stride along the sideline. Cribbs beat defensive back Darian Hagan in coverage. http://browns.ohio.com/2011/07/july-30-2011-news-notes-and-observations-from-browns-training-camp/

Excerpts from post-practice interviews with Browns players
by Nate Ulrich on July 30, 2011
Kicker Phil Dawson
(On if he felt he was mentally and emotionally moving on at the end of last season)- “I really didn’t know what was going to happen. I am not very good at predicting the future. I felt like that was it. Weather I emotionally said goodbye or not I wanted to make sure people around here knew how I felt. I guess that took me down a road here where in January I thought I may never come back. To get the news this offseason that I will be back and now to be here, it’s a surreal feeling, but it’s one I am embracing and looking forward to. I am ready to get after it. I am kind of frustrated that I can’t be out there practicing right now, hopefully that will all get worked out because I want to get prepared and have a good season.”
(On dealing with all the changes during his career with the Browns)- “The changes probably don’t affect me as quite as much as the other guys. There are two little yellow polls out there and that’s my target. Regardless of what changes are going on, my job really doesn’t change. There’s very little I need to learn in terms of playbook, some things change with kickoffs and schemes and all of that. Obviously, having the experience of having been through this before has prepared me. Here we are. You can see it positively or negatively and I choose to see it positively. I know the guys are excited about it and that’s easy to feel in the locker room so I am all in and I am going to do what I can.”
Linebacker Scott Fujita
(On if he expected the lockout process to be that long when it began)- "It was a long process that wore me out at times, especially those last couple weeks. That part of it is behind me now and I'm just focused on the here and the now, and getting this team to be as good as possible moving forward."
(On how much of his career has been spent in a Dick Jauron-style defense)- "Quite a bit actually. I'm coming up on my 10th year now, this is my seventh defensive coordinator, and I've played in every combination or variation of defense there is. I've done a lot of this on both sides, I've played inside and outside in this system. It's a good system, it's fun, it lets guys play fast. I think it's a very safety friendly defense which I like, and I like the guys we have back there. I talk about D'Qwell (Jackson) all the time, and a system like this is built for a player of his talent. He is going to be so good in this defense, you guys just wait."
(On Usama Young)- "Exceptional athlete, he's one of those guys that can do everything on the back end. If you want him to play nickel coverage, he can do that. He can lock you down as a corner, he is big and has range. He has good leaping ability and great ball skills. I think they moved him to safety last season in New Orleans and body type wise and skill set wise, that's probably what he is most suitable doing. Awesome guy too, he was real deep in that community down there, real active and involved with kids. Just a really, really good person. I'm glad he is here."
Running back Peyton Hillis
(On how day one went with the new coaches)- “For the first day and getting back without having OTAs or minicamps, I thought it went really well. As running backs, I don’t think we had one mental mistake or error so that was good. As far as the terminology goes, the coaches are teaching it really well. The guys are enjoying it, but overall I thought it was a real good day of practice.”
(On if success will get to him)- “For me, no. I have always been the same guy and always will continue to be the same guy. When I hit the football field no matter where it is, practice or games, I am going to give it my all. That’s one thing that you don’t have to worry about. I am going to do all that I can to win games for this team and for the fans. As far as success goes, the Lord humbles me, pretty fast if I try to get out of line, especially my parents. That’s not who I am, that’s not who I want to be, other than that I really don’t think it’s an issue.”
(On if Montario Hardesty returning and the addition of Brandon Jackson will help keep him fresh)- “I welcome it with open arms. I think with more talent in the backfield, like you said, it helps me stay fresh and gives us more talent. I am a very unselfish guy, I just want to win ball games. If they get a lot of playing time or if I get a lot of playing time, we’ve got to make sure we go in there and win ball games. We’ll let everything else take care of itself.”
Quarterback Colt McCoy
(On if things are different for him this year coming in as the number one quarterback)- “It’s a lot different. Last year, I really tried to prepare like I was a starter anyways, but coming in as a rookie that’s really hard to do, especially when you don’t get reps. I’d like to say that my mentality hasn’t changed that much but it has. You come out here and you have to be ready to play. I feel like I’m in good shape. I felt like the guys around me; offensive line, receivers, running backs, I feel like overall everybody was in good shape and ready to work. For me, that’s good. I need all the work I can get, but I felt like day one went pretty good.”
(On his impressions of Greg Little)- “He’s a big, physical guy. He hadn’t played in a year so you don’t really know what to expect. I know he worked really hard with us this summer. I know he has a pretty good idea of what’s going on based off what they ran in North Carolina. I am excited to throw to him, I really am. Today, I thought he looked pretty good, but then again the offense has a little bit of disadvantage because we were in shells. Defensive linemen can push the pocket and put their hands up so we have a few disadvantages, but overall I felt like he did good. We just have to keep getting better.”
(On coach Pat Shurmur’s message to the team last night)- “His message was that he wanted to have a passionate, productive football team. I think everybody took that to heart and really appreciated what he said. That was one of the first things I wrote down in my book, ‘Have a healthy respect for what went on last year but move on and we want to be a passionate, productive football team.’ That’s a good message, especially on day one. Like I said, we’ve got a lot of work to do, but for now we will go back watch some tape and we’ll keep rolling.”
Go Browns!!!

I hope we see a lot of this during the season.
Hillis can go from FB to RB in a split second from the set. Splitting Hardesty out (you can't do this with a pure FB in the backfield) and force them to try and cover him with a LB or move one of their Safeties over and get the one on one match ups on the edge. Most importantly you can still run the ball. Hillis can do the same and Hardesty would be come the lone RB.
The two could offer a lot of versatility with fewer overall play calls. This is even more important to an offense in the no huddle or hurry up offense.
I think Jackson will be more active in the offense in 3rd down and long situations. Spelling Hillis and Hardesty in some obvious passing situations.
As much as I liked Harrison's ability to break one at any given moment. I was less impressed (even though he did improve some there) with his pass protection as far as blocking and also knowing his assignment.
He is also under rated as a runner.
To hear positive reports about Hardesty should lift us for the day

Pat Shurmur embraces his first practice as Cleveland Browns' head coach BEREA, Ohio -- Three days ago, Pat Shurmur was re-scripting each day's schedule for his first training camp as Browns coach in order to abide by new practice rules written into the league labor deal. Two days ago, he was meeting some of his players for the first time. One day ago, coaches were installing the base plays on offense and defense that would carry the team through the early stages of camp. Somehow it all came together for Shurmur and his coaching staff. On Saturday, they finally got to coach their players for the first time -- more than six months after being hired. Fans weren't allowed in and the players did not wear pads. It was less than a full squad of 90, as some newly signed players weren't eligible to participate because of the legal mumbo-jumbo of the new bargaining agreement. Others, such as receiver Mohamed Massaquoi and guard Eric Steinbach, surprisingly showed up with injuries. But for more than 21/2 hours, you might never know this abnormal NFL off-season had taken away all those spring practices, minicamps and team meetings that all coaches have come to rely on. "To come in a first practice like this today, after basically 12 hours of install, and for it to run as smoothly as it did, I was pretty impressed with that," said linebacker Scott Fujita. Some of the credit for that could go to the players for organizing off-season practices behind the leadership of quarterback Colt McCoy and Fujita. But this was Shurmur's day, his first at any level of football wearing the mantle of head coach. "For a first day I thought it went fairly well," Shurmur said. "We didn't jump offsides a bunch. We were generally in the right formations. Pretty decent execution on both sides. Plenty of things we've got to clean up, but the tempo, some of the things we were demanding on how to practice, they're getting used to because they're kind of just knocking the rust off, just like we are as coaches." By necessity, they're learning each other on the run. It was the first day Shurmur had seen his wide receivers run routes. And it was the first day the players had seen him coach. The night before, Shurmur addressed his team for the first time and delivered the message he's been waiting to voice since succeeding Eric Mangini as the fifth Browns coach in 13 seasons. "One of the things is we're moving forward," Shurmur said of his message. "Respect for what's happened before us. In the NFL, there's always change -- whether there's some change, a little change, a lot of change. I asked the fellas to embrace it and move forward. "Beyond that, just some of the things we're looking for in how we do business. There was a piece of the meeting where we were getting to know one another. Also, all the people in the organization who are going to work with the players had an opportunity to introduce themselves because there are a lot of new faces and we haven't been together in what has been an abnormal off-season." McCoy, who figures to be the greatest beneficiary of the coaching change, said, "His message was he wanted to have a passionate, productive football team. I think everybody took that to heart. That was one of the first things I wrote down in my book." For running back Peyton Hillis, Shurmur is his fifth NFL head coach in five years. "Great guy. Real fun guy. Cares about his players. A real players coach," Hillis said. "It's the man that comes in that makes a difference as a head coach. The attitude he brings, his personality, the way he can attract guys to his style and guys that want to be around him. I think that's what makes a great coach. "Different coaches have different ways, different philosophies. I just feel the attitude you bring to the game makes you a great coach." With the onset of another new era, the trappings of the old one have been erased. Gone is the jet engine-loud rock and rap music roaring from giant speakers used to steel the players against crowd noise. Gone are the one-word core values painted in the end zones to motivate. Shurmur's methods are simpler and rooted in the lessons learned from being around the sport virtually his whole life. Will the results be any different? That's all that matters. Nobody's been through this drill more than Phil Dawson, the only full-time kicker the Browns have known since the franchise was reborn in expansion. Like the team's followers, he has suffered through 10 losing seasons in 12 years. At year's end, Dawson was convinced he might finally have the chance to join a winning team through free agency. He was tagged as the team's franchise player and restricted from leaving. After relocating his family to his native Texas, Dawson did a U-turn back for at least one more year. "You can see it positively. You can see it negatively. I choose to see it positively," Dawson said. "I know the guys are excited about it. That's easy to feel in the locker room. I'm all in. "I want to win. Having been here for 12 years and going through all the stuff we've talked about, for this team to win and for me to be here and be a part of that, that would be much more meaningful to me than if it happened anywhere else." by Tony Grossi And so, Shurmur begins his career as Browns coach, 0-0 after his first day, just like the others. web page

anybody saw the "raw practice footage" on the main page? I saw #3 at QB and was like .. I think it was Jarrett Brown, but for some strange reason I hate that number now.

Good thing we have about 15 WRs in camp then.
I would guess that these are very minor injuries ... where you hold a guy out and let him get to 100% now rather than having him damage something because he is compensating for a modest injury.

BEREA, Ohio -- Josh Cribbs, the Cleveland Browns' dynamic kick return specialist, sat out the second part of practice Sunday with his left knee wrapped in ice. Earlier, fans had cheered each time Cribbs caught a pass from quarterback Colt McCoy as a wide receiver in the team's new West Coast offense and were puzzled and disappointed when he sat out with what Cribbs called a strain from having a defensive back land on his leg. "I didn't want to press through it and risk missing a preseason game," Cribbs said as he went indoors to join teammates in an afternoon of stability training. Tight end Ben Watson only watched after sustaining a concussion Saturday. Wide receiver Carlton Mitchell walked off with a shoulder problem. Starting wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi still had his right foot in a cast with an injury that has yet to be fully explained by the Browns. Massaquoi declined to comment as he headed indoors. Cribbs was part of the second day of non-padded drills for about an hour, then went to the sideline. He removed the ice bag after a while and when the two-hour workout was over, seemed to favor the leg somewhat as he jogged lightly to join teammates for a meet-and-greet session with appreciative fans. "He participated through one-on-ones, then his knee got a little stiff," first-year head coach Pat Shurmur said. "I don't think it is serious. "Carlton had a little episode with his shoulder, but Watson is going to be out a little bit." Cribbs made a couple of nice catches at wide receiver before being hurt. His breakaway speed and willingness to take on tacklers could make him a key component in the new, upscale offense being implemented -- as long as he remains healthy. Two years ago, Cribbs accounted for 2,510 all-purpose yards. He had 1,340 last season, slowed when he dislocated four toes while being tackled after a 37-yard pass reception on Nov. 14. Cribbs said after the Browns' 5-11 season it was a humbling experience and he felt like he let the fans down. His legion of followers didn't feel that way as they called out to him early in practice, then gathered around him afterward. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press LINK

Greg Little taking advantage of receiving corps' ailments
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer
BEREA, Ohio -- So much for rookie receiver Greg Little easing his way into football shape and knocking the rust off after sitting out all last season.
Little, the Browns' second-round pick, was thrust into the starting lineup on Sunday's second day of camp because of injuries to receivers Mohamed Massaquoi (foot) and Josh Cribbs, who went down early in practice with a possible leg muscle strain and didn't return. Carlton Mitchell also left practice early with a shoulder injury.
Little, who had been operating as the third or fourth wideout, was suddenly starting opposite Brian Robiskie in two-receiver sets -- and looking solid in drills.
"When the line gets shorter and guys get more reps, it helps them," said coach Pat Shurmur. "If they can handle it and they're in shape to handle it, the more you do something the better you get."
Little (6-2, 220) dropped a couple of passes Sunday, but also caught a few in 7-on-7s and team drills from Colt McCoy, with whom he worked during two off-season players-only camps.
"He's pretty good when they're body-to-body," said Shurmur. "He finds a way to separate in a short area. We'll try to keep working on that. We'll see tomorrow when he puts the shoulder pads on, how it will affect his speed. We don't think it will diminish much."
Shurmur is just getting acquainted with Little, suspended for his 2010 season at North Carolina for accepting agent benefits.
"He's a fun guy to work with, very talented," said Shurmur. "You'll find with guys that are playmakers that they have a lot of confidence in their ability. He's got skill and ability. He's probably working through the first couple days like most players. But he's been very coachable so far and I think that'll bode well for him."
McCoy spent extra time with Little on and off the field in the off-season skills sessions.
"He's a big, physical guy. He hadn't played in a year so you don't really know what to expect," said McCoy. "I know he worked really hard with us this summer. I know he has a pretty good idea of what's going on based off what they ran in North Carolina. I'm excited to throw to him, I really am. Overall, I felt like he did good. We just have to keep getting better."
Little said he felt comfortable working with the starters Sunday because he ran a similar scheme at with the Tar Heels.
"Coming from a pro-style West Coast offense in college helps me tremendously to be able to step in with the ones and be under that fire," he said. "It's a great learning experience for me."
With the other receivers banged up, Little might be relied on more quickly than planned. Shurmur said on draft day that Little has the potential to develop into a No. 1 receiver. Could he assume that role this season?
"If things transpire that way, I'd happily step up to the plate," Little said.
Little, who began his UNC career as a running back, downplayed the layoff since the 2009 season, when he caught 62 passes for 724 yards and five touchdowns.
"I prepared myself in the off-season," he said when asked if he felt rusty. "We really haven't put on pads and really started a full-speed, down-to-the-ground drill."
Little said attending the final two "Camp Colts" helped him tremendously.
"Oh gosh, that was so empowering for me to be a part of that with Colt and actually be able to be around a bunch of guys on the team," he said. "It helped our camaraderie a lot and just getting the terminology and some reps was great."
He said he also started to develop some chemistry with McCoy.
"I got a feel for how Colt throws the ball and his velocity and how he progresses through his reads, and it was really good for me," said Little.
Little said the Browns can expect him to be a model citizen after his problems at North Carolina, where he also racked up 93 parking tickets.
"It's not something I'm determined to do. It's just the right thing to do," said Little. "I've always done that, but some of the good things I've done in the community have been overshadowed."
He said he doesn't know if he was partially responsible for former Browns coach Butch Davis being fired by North Carolina in the midst of an NCAA investigation. Little was one of 14 Tar Heels suspended last season, when 12 players received parking tickets totaling $13,125.
"Once players step outside the building and go home, he leaves it up to the young man to take care of himself," said Little. "I was really surprised [that Davis was fired]. I was very close to Butch. It was a terrible thing to see him removed from that program, and all the remarkable things that he's done."
But Davis assured Little that Cleveland would be a fresh start.
"He talked tremendously about this town and this community and he spoke so highly of the type of fans that were going to be behind me," said Little. "He said I'd fit in great."
Maybe sooner than later.
Go Browns!!!

Cleveland Browns training camp log: Day 2
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer
BEREA, Ohio -- What happened: 2,923 fans turned out for the first practice open to the public. The quarterbacks and receivers were off, but plenty of key offensive skill players are banged up.
"We missed some easy ones," said coach Pat Shurmur. "We preach that if you have an easy one, you can't give it up." ... Montario Hardesty has looked strong so far. Pads go on Monday. D'Qwell Jackson almost picked off a pass from Colt McCoy over the middle. Undrafted rookie receiver L.J. Castile has flashed some ability.
Cameron shines: Rookie tight end Jordan Cameron is showing the athleticism everyone heard about on draft day. He had several impressive receptions Sunday, including a diving catch from Seneca Wallace and a deep ball across the middle from Colt McCoy. "He's competed well," said Shurmur. "He's a guy who has natural ability as a receiver. He's big, he's lean and he's very athletic. We're trying to develop him as a three-down player. Until he gets to that point, we'll see how much he can handle."
Quote of the day: Cornerback Sheldon Brown, on new defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley from the Eagles: "He's a muscle, one whole muscle, face, head, body, anything."
Injury update: The following players were idle for all or part of practice -- WR Josh Cribbs, WR Mohamed Massaquoi, WR Carlton Mitchell, TE Ben Watson, DL Travis Ivey.
Go Browns!!!

Somehow I find that intimidating, encouraging, and kinda funny all at the same time.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Could Greg Little have said "So to speak" any more often?
Wow .... it had to be 15 times in the press conference.
He seems like a decent kid ... but that kinda stuff drives me up the wall.

jc ...
There is a thread on the scout board with real-time updates of practice this morning. Looks like maybe it's from a twitter feed. Good stuff.
McCoy struggling again. Second day in a row Jarrett Brown firing some nice throws. Sheard, Little, and Haggerty all looking good. Rubin involved in a scuffle!
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

He is tall enough I think. If Skrine holds a good position on his man he can have success in this League.
Darrel Green wasn't any taller and look at the career he had, in part due to his speed and holding good position on a receiver.
As a CB, you always give yourself a chance to make a play if you can stay in his hip pocket.

I agree. Height will detract in some situations (red zone), but overall it shouldn't be a huge deal if he can keep separation at a minimum. Skrine is one of the guys that I will tune into preseason to see. Conflicting reports from his scouting (some say he was a bad tackler, others saying he was a good tackler). I want to see for myself

I've seen mostly positive scouting reports as far as his willingness to mix it up in run support.
At least the ones I have faith in anyways
