Maybe - but it might not be a good move.
Look at the Brandon Jacobs career path...that's what you should expect from Hillis
I don't believe in judging a player by another. Hillis may not play for 12 seasons, but he has a lot of good football left in the tank. Some of you guys act like he has been in the league for 7 or 8 years. He has had two years of full time duty.
And he didn't geta ton of carries in college either, so he lacks the wear and tear of the backs that normally have 1000+ carries coming out of college.
Good point Cle23.
In my last rebuttal I forgot to mention one of my all time favorite (HOF) RB's.
John ("The Diesel") Riggins; Career 1971 - 1985. With arguably his best year coming in 1983.
Myth; RB's have only a 4-5 year career. Most 'starting' RB's play much longer then that (injuries do not apply, because injuries happen at any stage in a players career).
Many RB's are out of the league not because they are wore out, but because they might not be good enough and are replaced by other hopeful types, (without disputing the numbers) thus diluting the facts.

It's a bad thing for me (as a football fan) - that's why I don't like it.
I also support the right for BP to make money, that doesn't mean I'm not upset when I look at the gas price and it's gone up.
As a capitalist - I don't care about Randy Learner.... I want to maximize my happiness, thus I want the Browns to win football games.
So, damn the pitfalls, full speed ahead right..
it's your beliefs I guess, but they are one sided, not for the good of the fan base in the longterm and doesn't do a thing to get us a winner.. nothing.. and if you look at our history, it's clearly a proven fact..
More importantly, you seem to not care if Lerner makes money.. OK,, so, let's say he doesn't make money,, how long can he run a team like that. The dude is a Billionaire,, so certainly, he can do it for a while.. But why the hell would he? He'd have to be an idiot.
would you do it ? if you would, then you know what I think of your business acumen.. (just saying, if you run a business, any business, and you do it at a loss, eventually, you will go out of business)
Losing isn't good for the fans, and I think if you go out and look, you will find VERY few teams that win on a consistent basis when they go the FA route.
But, if you are looking for the quick fix,, then I suggest you become a Redskins fan.. Maybe, someday if they spend enough, they'll win something.

this is awfully fishy. Hodges posts about playing basketball a lot on hi...
He is known for playing basketball a lot. I wonder if he had an injury he was covering up till he got to camp? I certainly hope not.

Browns sign CB Dimitri Patterson by Don Delco of theOBR.com, August 2, 2011 at 2:52 pm ET
Dimitri Patterson Profile
In search of bolstering their secondary, it appears as if the Browns landed former Eagles cornerback Dimitri Patterson. NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora tweeted around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2 that the Browns agreed to terms with Patterson. He played in all 16 games for the Eagles last season, registering four interceptions, one sack and 42 tackles. Patterson (5-11, 196) came into the league in 2005 with Washington, spent 2007 and 2008 in Kansas City and played in 27 games the last two season for the Eagles.

i don't know. tearing your achilles would give you an awful limp that would be tough to cover-up until you could get on the field and feign the injury.
maybe he weakened it playing, but it sounds like he did hurt it today

really sucks. Hodges was a guy that came in and went to work every time he was called upon. Great season last year.

Just go sign Rob Long...Punter...Syracuse...
Here's Ten Reasons You Should Sign Rob Long by Sean Keeley
This will not stand. So, NFL decision-makers, it looks like you need a little reminding as to why it's worth your time and a few shekels to bring Rob Long in for a looksie. And I've got ten very good reasons for you (in case you didn't read the headline of this post, Mr. G.M.).
1. You want accolades? Sure, how bout 2010 College Football Insiders Preseason All-American, 2010 Second Team All-BIG EAST, 2009 First Team All-BIG EAST, 2009 BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection, 2010 Ray Guy Award semifinalist, 2007 Second Team All-BIG EAST and 2007 Sporting News and College Sports Report Freshman All-American.
2. His last name is Long and he's a punter. You don't think that's a good sign?
3. One of the nation’s top punters with a 43.3 YPP career average. He punted for over 11K yards with 80 kicks inside the 20.
4. Look, this isn't about Rob being a charity case because of the cancer (which he did beat, by the way). But, I mean, look at the way everyone went nuts when the Giants signed Mark Herzlich. People were falling all over themselves to write about how great this was. Rob deserves a little bit of that as well. Great pub for you AND you get a great punter who can actually make your team...
5. Rob is a four-year starter and was named captain as a junior and senior. i.e. LEADER OF MEN.
6. Gary Anderson. Olindo Mare. Don McAulay. Tim Vesling. Nate Trout. Syracuse kickers perform well. I know those are all placekickers and we're talking about a punter, but, you see my point.
7. He's well-schooled in placeholding on field goals. It's called diversifying your skills. Look it up.
8. He's a good guy, very humble. He won't be the kind of punter to call other NFL players a douchebag. Promise.
9. Less than three weeks after brain surgery (BRAIN SURGERY!), he was with his teammates at the Pinstripe Bowl to support them. Dedicated teammate? Let there be no question.
10. Because, let's face it, your punter kinda blows. We all saw that time last season when he shanked that kick during that one game...you know the one I'm talking about. Head-to-head, I think Rob Long can out-kick him. Don't believe me? Just sign on the line that is dotted...
Go Browns!!!

That's who I want them to sign too! But I'm a Syracuse fan. Lol.
They're bringing him in for a tryout, at least.

I would imagine the tryout for a punting job is about the shortest event in the NFL. "Hey dude, kick it as far as you can. Ok, now really high and far. Ok, try a short kick at an angle near the 1-yardline. Nice, we'll be in touch. NEXT!"
I suppose there's more to being a punter, like placeholding, covering the punt, dealing with punt block coverages, the Browns fake punt play and how they handle snaps....but come on, it's the punter. The FG kicker on most teams won't even eat lunch with the punter.

That's too bad Hodges is lost for the season.
I loved his ability to pin the ball in side the 20 yard line.

Don't forget, a punter needs to be able to count to eleven to make sure we have the right number of players on the field so we don't get penalized.

Yeah.
I mean, after 8 months of rest and all, that day at the "office" was a killer.
Torn achilles, concussion, hamstring problems, one guy that sits out practice 2 and 3 for unknown reasons, a guy in a boot, .................how can we expect these guys to actually play a game when they can't make it through a few practices?

Smart man - skip the first few days when he knew a bunch of people would get injured. Now he can come to camp and not worry about it.

Who is Rob Long? And is Patterson the CB from Philly?
This thread is nothing but a whine fest, I wish each signing had it's own thread.

He's a punter, and yes...
And whining about whining just leads to more whining...

All I heard was we were bring this Rob Long guy in for a workout.
Considering Hodges went down earlier today, having him looked at and signed already would be pretty amazing.

Someone was alking about Rob Long in the other thread I think on Camp stuff...apparently a high character guy.
Has anyone heard any talk about bringing Lofa Tatupu in for a visit? He would round out our starting LB core nicely..

http://www.nfl.com/freeagencyLofa Tatupu | MLB 2010 Team: Seattle Exp: 6 years Analysis: Tatupu was scheduled to visit the Raiders on Monday, only one day after the Seahawks released the linebacker, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora. Tatupu will also visit with the Redskins this week, La Canfora reported. The six-year veteran made the Pro Bowl in his first three seasons, but he has fought injuries since. He played in all 16 games last season, but his 88 tackles were the least of his career in a full season, and he needed offseason surgery on both knees.

Yikes, surgery on both knees?
It says he's battling injuries, but that's got to scare teams away.

Patterson was a great pick up. Has a great opportunity to start opposite Haden.
Now get some DL depth and a punter.
you had a good run Hank.

j/c Is there any serviceable help or the defensive line still out there?
I can't remember the last time I was this apprehensive about a T.C. squad.

I will be quite sad if Patterson gets significant playing time. He is not a good player and was ranked as the 24th worst in the NFL.
