this is awfully fishy. Hodges posts about playing basketball a lot on hi...
He is known for playing basketball a lot. I wonder if he had an injury he was covering up till he got to camp? I certainly hope not.
It was whispered by profootballtalk.com that is what happened to the big free agent center who never played a down for the Browns did. : it was rumored he blew out his knee playing basketball then showed up to training camp and crumpled to the field on the first play. I think teams should investigate in the same manner as Insurance fraud.
Oh man,, please find that article for me.. I'd love to see it.. Thanks in advance
that had to be three years ago at least probably 4. It was when I first started going to profootball talk.com that always seemed the first to scoop stories. I like their writing and generally do not seem to have an axe to grind. Oh it was about leCharles Bently.
Yeah, I figured it was about LaCharles.. Thank you for responding.
You aren't the only one that remembers that, someone else saw it also. I wasn't questioning you on it, just wanted to read the story.
I think, had it been more than a whisper it would have surfaced during the legal battle Bentley had with the Browns. Still not sure that's even settled yet..
Thanks

would love to see the hits him and ward would lay on some people.....call it a pipe dream if you want.
I have heard rumblings that San Fran might be trying to deal him....is the only reason I asked
They may lay some night hits, but Mays was terrible in coverage in college. I would look at him at LB before I would bring him in as a FS.
Interesting thought. Wasn't Urlacher a safety/Lb hybrid in college or am I thinking of someone else?
Would you put Mays at the Mike, Will or Sam and why would he fit that Lb position better than the others?
Urlacher was the one, you are correct.
As far as position, that is where I get hung up. I think he would best fit the Will, but his coverage may get exposed there too, though not nearly as bad as when at S.

What the heck is up with that guy. He was a Thorpe award finalist, a supposed upper first round pick, dropped to the second round in the draft and now the niners want to dump him? I realize he has coverage issues, but he's 6'3, 230 with a good work ethic and can lay the lumber. Seems like he'd be worth taking a chance on.
what happened was the USC LBs graduated and he decided to stay in school. After Cushing/Matthews/Rey-M/Kaiava left, Mays was asked to do more for the defense and he could not deliver. He looked amazing when those guys were wreaking havoc and he could just freelance. Once they were not, he was exposed.
I will admit, I was fully fooled his junior year. He was all over the place.

So where many experts.
I've been wrong on some occasions, but I'm sticking with my evaluation conclusions of him and that is he is; At best a he is ST's player. A poor mans Cribbs.
I know it's evil of me , but I was really hoping that the Bengals would draft him last year.

just taking a look at the ESPN FA tracker, here are the guys I am a bit surprised haven't found work yet: Mark Clayton - injured early last year, but had a real good start with Bradford. surprised that Sam wouldn't be jumping up and down for his old college buddy (even with his knee not 100% yet). lofa tatupu - well, his stock has certainly dropped. injuries, inconsistency, but I would have expected someone to have given him a shot at making a team. Dhani Jones - no, he's not good, but this is a list of guys not on 90man rosters. not expecting greatness here. he's likely better than most of our backup LBs, but I understand the desire for youth. Stephen Cooper - not for us, he's a 3-4 MLB guy. But, still surprised noone has signed him yet. Kevin Curtis - with his injury history, less of a surprise and I suspect he'll catch on somewhere once a team gets thin at WR. Charlie Frye - kidding, kidding here. a joke. really. Jared Gaither - can't pass a physical, so no surprise right now. Jerome Harrison - well, Mike Bell can't find a job either. Matt Roth - thought Rob Ryan would have looked at him. Apparently, he's rebuffed Denver and New Orleans because he doesn't want to play in a 4-3 as well (PFT). there are a bunch of other 'name' guys like Ricky Williams, Darren Sharper, Steve Smith (NYG - knee issue), Pat Williams, and even some old familiar names like Gerard Warren, Leon Williams. http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?&a....com%2fnfl%2ffa

Actually, NE rejected Roth. According to PFT, Roth started negoatiations, then upped his asking price. NE told him to take a hike.

Hopefully Frye saved his money. I think his career is coming to an end.
As for Matt Roth, talk about a player who seriously overvalues himself.

They're both simply depth signings for the Lions since they lost Mikel LeShoure for the season. They needed a backup behind Best.
They're also carrying SEVEN RB at the moment so it appears they're looking at a lot of different guys for their RB depth.

http://www.kffl.com/team/13/nfl/cleveland-brownsBrowns | May look to add LBs when cuts begin Thu, 11 Aug 2011 11:00:10 -0700 The Cleveland Browns may look to sign some experienced linebackers once teams start cutting players because five of the eight backup linebackers are undrafted free agents. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/12/rams-cut-david-vobora/Rams cut David Vobora Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 12, 2011, 10:33 AM EDT Rams linebacker David Vobora won a huge settlement this offseason against a supplement company for causing him to fail a NFL drug test. That good news preceded a surprising downer on Friday: Vobora was cut by the Rams, according to his agent on Twitter. Recently signed linebacker Ben Leber will take his spot on the roster. The Rams also added Zac Diles and Brady Poppinga after the lockout. Vobora was a starter for a decent chunk of his time with the team after being “Mr. Irrelevant” in the 2008 draft. He figures to get another job fairly soon.

J/C Ummmm...We should definitely at least look at this guy??? Pashos played well against the Packers but he is a true injury risk. This guy has been pretty stellar over his career. http://eye-on-football.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/31333244Saints release starting RT Jon Stinchcomb Posted on: August 15, 2011 7:54 pm Edited on: August 15, 2011 7:58 pm Posted by Josh Katzowitz Last year, Andy Benoit and I had quite a debate about whether Saints starting RT Jon Stinchcomb should be included on a top-five list of all the NFL tackles. I said yes. Andy ridiculed me for that, writing, “If putting Stinchcomb on your list is meant as a joke, that’s funny. If you’re being serious, that’s even funnier.” I was serious, but apparently, Saints coach Sean Payton leans more toward Andy’s way of thinking. That’s because, as Rapid Reporter Larry Holder writes, Payton released Stinchcomb on Monday, ending his eight-season tenure in New Orleans. The reason: as Payton said, via the New Orleans Times Picayune, the Saints wanted to try out younger players like Zach Strief and Charles Brown. Though Payton considered keeping Stinchcomb, who was due to make $2.25 million this year, ultimately he wanted to give more reps to the younger players. "It's hard,” Strief said after practice, via the Saints official site. “It's like someone telling you that you get something you always wanted but at the detriment to your brother." Said QB Drew Brees: "One of the greatest teammates I've ever had. Obviously he's going to be missed." And I’m pretty sure Stinchcomb won’t be on anybody’s top-five list this year.

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/sports/2011/08/16/transx16-gv7dp4dk-1.htmlFootball NFL Cincinnati Bengals: Signed DE Jonathan Fanene. Cleveland Browns: Claimed CB Brett Johnson off waivers from Seattle. Placed OL Billy Yates on the reserve/retired list. Hmm.. whats the word on Brett Johnson? I'm unfamiliar with him. web page Former California Bears safety Brett Johnson has been claimed and officially awarded off of waivers (from Seattle) to the Cleveland Browns, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot. Johnson was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Buffalo Bills last year, and is a fantastic athlete. The 6’1" 194 pound safety ran a 4.47 40 yard dash at the Cal pro day, and he posted a 42.5 inch vertical leap, which is very impressive. Whether or not that athleticism will translate to the field remains to be seen, as this is already Johnson’s third NFL team, but he will get a shot to make the Browns this pre-season.
