Perez had 32 pitches last night. I understand not giving him the save opportunity today in the 9th and letting Masterson try to finish it out (he was under 100 pitches). but, why bring in Perez once Masterson was in trouble? he's not used to entering with guys on base, he's not good at keeping guys off base, and we have a ton of guys in the bullpen more equipped for that particular situation (save situation or no save situation). just makes me

Carrera/Cabrera/Choo/Santana - not a great chance to get a run back, but at least we have a punchers chance here.

Good for Choo. New child, walk off homer vs his old team. He deserves it after the year he's had.
Still doesn't absolve Acta. Stupid coaching is stupid coaching.

Acta has been pretty good this year. But I totally agree - you either go with Perez at the top of the inning or not at all. Not at all would have probably been preferable.

Masterson deserved a better fate. He's been one of the best starters we've had this year, but it's still a win.

Well, I guess I should pull down my previous post. If we can get these guy the next two games and then get on a little roll AND have detroi.....ok, far fetched but I'm trying to find any kind of hope.

chris perez for the 'win' - though I don't really blame him (as mentioned above 32 pitches last night and not used to coming in with runners on base).
thank you Zeke for a magnificent game and Choo for finally finishing one of these off for us. be great if 'the real Choo' is back for the home stretch here.

Masterson could easily have 15 wins by now. As for our so-called closer, I'd replace him with Pestano until he (Perez) gets his head out of his butt.

He's 10-7 with a 2.83 ERA. I think you might even be underselling it with 15.
He's given up 3 or fewer runs in 21 starts this season (in games with enough IP to get the win). He only has wins in 9 of those games.
He's given up 2 or fewer runs in 19 games. He only has wins in 8 of those games.
He's given up 1 or fewer run in 10 games. He only has wins in 6 of those games.
He's given up 0 runs in 3 games. He is 1-1 in those games.

Perez is a disaster.
If you've got a 3 run lead, he'll give up 2.
This guy looks absolutely lost right now.

masterson put men on the corners with 1 out. perez should have limited the damage to at most 1 run, but masterson put himself in that situation.
now, Choo and Zeke (big day for Zeke boy). Those boys deserve some good meat tonight.

Perez gave up a bases-clearing double to the #9 hitter on a full count after getting him down 0-2. He has 48 career ABs. It's not like we're talking about Ichiro slapping it down the right field line here.

to their young, speedy CF who is 11/33 in his last 8 games (vs. TX, Boston, Tor, TB, Cle) including 1/3 against Masterson before that hit as well. small sample size since they just brought him up and all, but we're not talking about your typical #9 hitter either (see, I can play that game too ).
i agree i would rather Perez just strike him out and go from there, but all he had to do was put down a good bunt to get the run in from 3B anyway, so Masterson can't be upset that he didn't get the win today. that's all.

My point is that he's inexperienced and he was in an 0-2 count. No excuse for Perez to not make that out.
Edit: I also thought that Manny should've pinch-hit Shelley Duncan for Valbuena in the eighth and then put Jason Donald in the field for the 9th. Two on and two out late in a one-run game, you shouldn't be sending a guy to the plate who's hitting a buck-fifty or whatever horrible BA Valbuena had.

...and scratch out a run, give it right back. Just for kicks, over the last 2+ games, 6 of 10 times when we have scored, Seattle has scored the next half inning. That's pathetic. Zero focus from the pitching staff.
-------------
Edit: I just did some quick counting. After twice today, Detroit and Seattle have scored runs the next half inning after we do 10 of 17 times.

[Editors Note: I'm about to use the phrase "next year" ..Just saying..]

today was a 'white flag' game
we are facing an elite pitcher, so let's sit our 2 best hitters when our other 4 best hitters are already out with injuries.

yup, this is it folks. It was fun while it lasted, but losing 3 of 4 to seattle has to be the end of the run.
After Sept. call ups, I say you fill the line-up with anyone from AAA who has shown any power potential what-so-ever. We need to find a real DH for next year, a real 1B, and possibly a closer as C. Perez hasn't been nearly as good as the numbers suggest, IMO.

Ah, yes you do. For some reason I had the roster expansion coinciding with the end of the AAA season. Not sure where that come from.

it's not too far off, and really, I don't know why they don't just cut the 10 days or so off the AAA schedule to make it happen.

also of note: why does Willy Mo Pena save all his good games against us? didn't he kill us when he was with Arizona too?
ok, looked it up. yep, i'm not hallucinating.
W.M. Pena was 2/3 as a pinch hitter with 2runs, 2RBI including a HR in that series.
He went 0/5 last night when Seattle was scoring 12 runs. But, today, he goes 3/3 with 4RBI, 2runs including a HR.
vs. CLE this year: 5/11 2HRs 6RBI 4runs vs. everyone else: 11/59 5HRs 7RBI 7runs

I'm officially moving into Browns mode (and getting ready for NHL mode too). I probably won't notice baseball until the playoffs start.

I find it hard to say that it's over when Detroit has had as many bad spells as we have ....... and there are still 35 games left, and we play Detroit 2 more series (IIRC) .... but we are definitely hitting the danger zone. We have so many injuries that it's horrifying. I honestly don't know if we should grab Thome if we can or not. I don't know if he'll be the difference maker or not.
Kinda sad to see a season that started with such promise whither and die ....but it appears that's the path we're on.
Oh well ... if we don't get 'em this year, I think we're well armed for next year with just 1 or 2 kep additions ..... and we're pretty well set as far as the hardest part to find .... that being pitching.

The only reason to pick up Thome is for sentimental purposes.
Every time I think about the Jimenez trade I get more and more bummed out about it.

it looks really bad right now. But I think the wise thing to do is really judge this trade at around this time next year.
I can't fault them for the move. The numbers and odds on this deal were in our favor. I fault them for not going out and getting a bat. Philadelphia got Hunter Pence for almost nothing. What did you do? Not a damn thing. Fukudome? That's it?
And while Detroit has put a stranglehold on this division. (barring some 1969 Cubs/Mets type collapse) we're all going to look back at this year and wonder what if (funny, huh)
You look at the other teams' pitching in the AL, and the tribe matched up really well. Strong 1-5, great bullpen.
It's not all on the team, because the injuries were at a point of ridiculousness, but they did nothing, they just let this thing burn to the ground.
I really hope they have a plan, but it doesn't seem like they do.

I didn't like the trade when it was made because I never considered Jimenez a #1 pitcher. And I believe Pomeranz will be something special. A true #1. While White will be a true #2. Plus, it is pretty standard that when a pitcher comes over to the AL from the NL his numbers get worse.
You say this trade was made for more than just this year. But I say come 2013 this trade looks absolutely horrible (when White and Pomeranz are both performing just as well/better than Jimenez) and will continue to look worse for the 5+ years that follow.

i can see Pomeranz developing into a true #1 down the road someday. he has the tools and just needs to develop them.
but White a true #2? i'm about as optimistic as they come about the Tribe and was hoping he could settle into the #3/4 role at best.

I could be a little biased on White. Living in NC I got to see a lot of him at UNC. I always felt he was a better reliever than starter (he did both in college). I thought he could have been an a really good closer (I don't say great because that has too much to do with mental make up and not just pure talent and I have no method of evaluating that).
Maybe a true #2 is a little optimistic but I stand by that statement. I have no doubt that if he remains healthy he will at least be a good middle of the order guy. At least a solid #3, certainly better than a 4.

fair enough. i hope he does. seemed like a good guy while he was here and I'd rather both teams 'win' this trade (Ubaldo as a dominant ace with Pomeranz and White developing as well). I'd gladly take that.

Thome, who began his career with the Indians but left as a free agent after the 2002 season, was placed on trade waivers by the Twins this week. The Indians were awarded the claim on Wednesday, sources said, and the two teams have until 1 p.m. ET on Friday to work out a deal. The Indians wouldn't give up much in return for Thome, who is 40 years old and is hitting .248 with 12 home runs in 238 at-bats. Thome recently hit his 600th career home run. Thome would fit with the Indians, with designated hitter Travis Hafner hurt and possibly out for the season. Thome would be able to block a trade, but given his strong feelings for Cleveland, it's hard to believe that he would
