I don't know why everyone is talking about who we're gonna draft in the first round on this thread. While it seems like Joe Thomas has a shot of slipping past the Lions, I doubt we will take him since we are set at the tackles for at least 2007 and Savage clearly wants a Qb or Rb with #3. We are gonna take Peterson or Quinn - whichever is higher on his board (Peterson prolly), and probably take an OT, DT, or CB in round 2 it seems.
Regarding Robaire Smith I really hope we sign him because he could be a great RDE for us for a couple years and really bolster our weak run defense. He would help Wimbley a lot more than McKinley and Eason did at getting to the QB too.
You can say that with certainty? Because I doubt anyone on this board could say with certainty one way or the other, you're making assumptions based on what you've heard in the press which is about the worst way to make an assumption ever because it IS the press.
Also, set on tackles? We have Schaffer, not a true LT and someone that EVERYONE during the regular season was complaining about as a LT . We took him to be our future RT I'm convinced and the fact that Ryan Tucker, as much as I like him, is getting up there in age. He's a good RT, but as a mauling type he could fit in pretty well at RG and still do very well for this team.
So we DON'T have a true LT on this team and I can't say with ANY ounce of certainty that we are SET at LT . We just aren't. I want a skilled LT, someone that we can keep around for years to come and someone who will keep the blind side of whichever QB we have protected, that's the best assurance you can have as a QB, a franchise LT.
Basically, we are still up in the air on who we could, will, or won't take. And it's all hypothetical, you can't say with certainty one way or the other and you're just setting yourself up.
HAVE FAITH IN YOUR TEAM! GO BROWNS!!

Any way I look at it, DE isn't something we are looking at with our 1st selection.
Nothing would change by signing this guy.
as I said in my draft DL in the first OL in the second post... I'm just currious... if we don't sign a DE... who is our starting DE? Roye and???? yeah... that's a huge problem. The 2nd round does not really have much starting material DL's in comparison to OL IMO.
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

I have no idea about the draft, but I wouldn't mind Smith being signed. We need help on the defensive line. He could provide that.
I like what Savage has done thus far.......for the most part.
Resigning Fraley was a good move.
Getting Steinbach was huge, and I say that even though I am not big on FA.
Not sure about Peek. It appears we overpaid for him, but I don't know enough about the guy to say for sure. His stats are bad, but perhaps he will blossom here.
I am not so sure I like the cb from Washington.
I really like the fact that Savage hasn't spent big money on players like Davis and Clements.
I am hoping he signs Smith and perhaps another cb, then packs it in and builds through the draft.

I was reading that peek is a good 3-4 backer, and when Houston switched BACK to the 4-3 he was the odd man out.
They say he is a good pass rusher. We will see, but if we can get any kind of pressure on the other side of wimbley...look out!
is he overpaid....probably, but it seems this year EVERYONE has been overpaid...cept steinbach and deilman oddly enough.
Wright on the other hand was totally out of left feild...looks to be overpaid depth.

Fraley was huge Steinbach was huge
Peek is a good signing... after Houston switched to the 4-3 he was ineffective.
The guy from Wash is just depth... nothing more IMO

While drafting Thomas might take a lot of pressure off Frye and Droughns, at the end of the day it's still Frye and Droughns (probably currently the worst backfield in the NFL). Shaffer and Tucker will do fine for 2007 and maybe even 2008, but Frye and Droughns will get both Phil and Romeo canned soon

let me get this straght,,, you are gonna bite,,,,,,,,,what?
you know how Millen is just killed in the press and in articles,,,, well you never hear that stuff about Savage,, you either hear good things or you hear nothing..
Except by various folks on this site or the official Browns site (yuk, I can't believe I even go there anymore) you don't hear much negative about him at all,,,
From time to time, you do hear good things about him,,
Also,, Ozzie Newsome, a person with some cred I would think, seems to think Highly of Savage,,,
Nothing in this world is for sure, but by all appearences, Savages is highly regarded, which makes your original comment about any problems signing players is a result of this player or that player not being impressed with our FO,,,, Kinda makes that moot doesn't it?

He started with less than zero " bumer " .. This is the year I expect him to start pulling the rabbit (or Dawg ) out of the hat ! You visit where ???

Smith I believe is not that good of a run stopper............

yeah, I know you were yanking my chain,,, but I had to answer you honestly didn't I Anyway, what I personally thing of savage is this,,, the jury is still out,, he's had two years and that's not enough time to turn this program around given the condition it was in when he got here.. Also, to have your best FA go down without playing a down certainly doesn't help,, having your Supposed superstar TE have to sit out the first year when you were counting on him didn;t help him either,, There have been a few things that seem to have conspired against savage,,, But still,,, I want to see Magic and to be honest, that might be asking a bit too much,,, time will tell if he is the right guy,,, so far, I think he is, but like I said,, I'm wanting magic to happen

Let me explain, it is not out of left feild. We need secondary help. The fact that he is older, and is basically a career backup, is where I find it to be from left feild. Being that he is an older veteran I am assuming that he will be overpaid for his position on the team. I have not seen the numbers, which is why I said "looks to be" and not IS.

Just one FYI...
Grade: 73 | Key Alert: None
Comment: Smith has good size, strength and versatile. He can play end or tackle and has played in 3-4 and 4-3 schemes. He is hard-nosed, durable and experienced. He is tough and competitive. He has good play recognition and understands his assignments. He can lock out and control the point of attack against the run. He can penetrate and is an active attacking upfield gaps.
He can move laterally down the line and get over trash in the box. He is best suited to playing in a confined area against the run but shows good effort in pursuit. He can create a pass-rush surge to push the inside pocket.
But Smith lacks ideal quickness and closing speed. He is upright off the ball and needs to play with better pad level at the point of contact. He has limited pass-rush countermoves and doesn't finish well. He lacks good lateral quickness off stunts to get on the edge of linemen.

I think Phil had him in mind as playing at NT but, just guessing with a little supposition, like all us here on the board.......I think Robaire, still envisions himself as an very good DE and is searching for the team that feels the same way as he does. JMHO

I still think Frye might be good....Yet Droughns was absolute garbage last year, and we must have a better RB then what he put on the field if we want a successful offence. Either He pickup his play like 2005 or we Draft a Star. So... RB is a much bigger need then QB. JMHO ...and could see a 1st day pick RB.
Go Browns !!!!

I kind of doubt Phl had him in mind for NT, imo. He played end in a 3-4 for Houston and that is where he is experienced, add that to the fact that McKinley is not going to be back.
