Less than 24 hours after the Patriots released Meriweather, he has signed with the Bears.

The Bears announced that they’ve signed the safety to a one-year contract. No word yet on how much he’ll be paid.

Everette Brown dropped by Panthers

In 2009, Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney traded a first-round pick away to draft defensive end Everette Brown in the second round. (They also picked up a fourth-round pick in the deal.

Just two years later, the Panthers gave up on Brown.

Adam Caplan of Sirius NFL Radio reports that the Panthers have waived Brown. He’s not a vested veteran, so don’t be surprised if a team or four claims him in an effort to turn his career around. web page

I would bring him in and give him a look. I just really have no confidence at all in Jamie Mitchell. Frankly it is amazing he is a starter when English, Robinson and Benard all outplayed him in preseason. Heck wasn't even close.

Everett Brown has some serious skills and the right coach just might be able to bring it out of him.

I would personally like to see us shift Sheard over to the strong side DE (were he was in College for the most part) and use the combination of English and Benard on the weak side.

It really wasn't short sighted though. Teams had done that many, many times, and there was an unwritten rule that other teams would not touch a guy waived in such a manner.

Jacksonville decided to buck tradition.

No biggie ..... but if something is done for 5 or more years ... dozens of times, and you get the same outcome ...... then it is done one more time with a different outcome, then is it really a foolish decision on the part of the person who got that single, completely different outcome?

I didn't personally think it was short-sighted

I am really surprised about the Everett cut, Ro Rivera and him must not have hit it off. He will find another team.

I'd like to bring in Everette Brown we need all the depth we can get there.

I also wouldn't mind bringing in Max-Jean Giles and Ryan Harris (assuming his back heals up.) That Texans RB would be o.k too.

I completely agree. I think Mitchell is nothing more than an athlete. He has good size and athleticism, but outside of that and his first step, he is nothing as a pass rusher. No moves at all.

I'm not arguing your point. I'm stating that saying the FO "cut" a player implies that they didn't want the player on the team. Waiving the player injured with the intent to put him on injured reserve indicates the opposite.

At the time it was regarded, as Django pointed out, as a stupid, short-sighted move. With two years of hindsight, I don't think anyone cares one way or the other that we didn't hang on to Don Carey.

jango is one of the guys that hammered the hell out of Mangini for the Carey fiasco.. as it turns out, he wasn't right at all,, But that didn't stop him from hammering him.

Right now we are carrying a late-round rookie safety, Hagg, who has been injured most if not all of camp and pre-season. I'm wondering why this kid is eating up a roster spot, and if we try the "waived-injured" route to the PS with him.

IMO at this point we would be better of getting a similar player from the bottom of somebody else's roster, who we would at least have some pre-season looks at.

I would guess either one of the spare DBs, or one of the TEs.

This makes sense. Shurmer is familiar with him from his days in STL.

Here's a draft analysis of him

From what I have read, the Rams former 3rd string QB did really well for them, and was highly thought of by the Rams. He was pushing to be 2nd string, but just barely missed out. The Rams really wanted to get him onto their practice squad.

I am rather surprised that we let a DE go instead of one of our 10 DBs ..... but that's really about it. I wasn't suprised when they picked up the QB after I heard their opinion of him.

I've read a couple of times now that T Lewis was in the mix for the #2 job.

If so, why did they keep 7 WRs and 4 TEs and risk losing a possible backup QB?

Seems odd.

Just a thought on Ventrone. While he is terrible as a safety, one thing the guy is good at is tackling. He might not cover good, but if you go back and watch any play he was involved in, you will see a guy that is a sure tackler.

I saw on here someone claiming he was a bad tackler, and I had to wonder why they said it. Everytime I saw him around a ball carrier, he made a solid textbook tackle.

IMO, he is just another guy posters love to bash. He is a special team player, and I don't think the FO feels any different than that. He played safety when we had noone else to do it. He sucked, but he went full go, that's about all you can ask from him.

As long as we have three safeties and four corners healthy ahead of him, I have no problem with Ventrone on the team for special teams. If it comes to pass that he's going to be needed to play safety, I'd rather they pick someone up who's not an embarrassment in coverage.

The only reason I can think of is injuries.

Watson and Moore have both been injured this pre-season, and Watson is not practicing yet this week. Massaquoi and Mitchell were both hurt, and Cribbs has been banged up as well, so who knows which guys will be 100% ready to go this week.

Y-Town,

I was refering to STL keeping 7 WRs and 4 TEs not the Browns...I'm not sure you took it that way.

I'm all in favor of keeping a 3rd QB on the 53 if he is a guy like Colt last year or a true developmental guy like Lewis appears to be.

I am not at all in favor of keeping a project QB on the final 53...that guy goes to the PS.

Aha. Yeah, I thought we kept 6 WRs .... but didn't feel like looking.

My brain is slightly out of it this morning.

Dolphins released LB Edds...maybe too slow for our D but he could be groomed as Fujita backup at SOLB imho...I'd take a flyer on him over Ventrone or Alex Smith anyday...also hope we still look to add another DE...E.Brown, Hunt and Teo-Nesheim still out there

Dolphins waived LB A.J. Edds and OL Joe Berger.
Edds racked up 18 tackles and a sack in the preseason, and the Fins were said to be high on him coming out of Iowa as a 2010 fourth-round pick. Perhaps he lost a step after missing his first year with a torn ACL. The Dolphins will move forward with Marvin Mitchell and Austin Spitler behind starters Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett. Edds should generate interest on waivers.

Marcus Harrison flunked his physical with the Panthers and will revert to waivers.
The Browns also put in an initial waiver claim, so perhaps they'll reenter the bidding. Harrison is probably out of shape; no particular injury is known. Long on potential, Harrison has been short on production his whole career.

Former Panthers DE Everette Brown passed through waivers unclaimed Monday and is now an unrestricted free agent.
Brown only had a $480K salary, so the league must know something about him we don't. The 43rd pick in the 2009 draft, Brown has flashed explosive rush ability but is a complete zero against the run. He needs to go to a 3-4 team.
