These are the guys I expected to make the team but now I believe will be cut:
Carlton Mitchell Alex Smith Brandon Jackson Ray Ventrone
I really thought that at the beginning of camp, these four were a lock. But with Mitchell, Norwood stepped up,
with Smith, Moore and Watson are solid and Cameron is young and raw, they'll groom him.
With Jackson being injured, I'm thinking they've gotten to see Armond Smith and Porter.. enough to think they can do without Jackson. And for way less money.
With Ventrone, I think they might want to look for a guy that contribute on ST, but could effectively move to more playing time and do well when called upon. Ventrone doesn't seem to really be that guy.
That's my guess... What's your suprise cut(s)?

they can put Brandon Jackson on the PUP and not have to cut him, which is what I expect them to do.
i agree the others seem destined for late cuts unless Ventrone survives for his ST skills.

First off, now way they cut Jackson.
Jarret Brown I think could be cut. He was supposed to be a developmental QB, but there will probably be better guys out there that we can stash on our practice squad.
Chris Gocong who has been injured and Maiava has played well is his absence.
Demetrius Williams has had a good camp, I just don't think Mitchell will be cut and there is no way we can carry seven WR's.

Jackson can't go on the PUP. PUP is only for players who didn't practice at all.

preseason PUP I thought was that way. i thought any player that might have an extended injury could be placed on the regular season PUP.
from 2010 but I don't think the rules changed, no mention of if they could have practiced and been injured in preseason though
Quote:
1.All PUP players are ineligible to play or practice for the first six weeks (not games) of the season. 2.After Week 6, a three-week window opens during which the players can return to practice (while not counting against the 53-man roster). In order to play this season, a PUP player must start practicing during that window. So the earliest a player could begin practicing is Oct. 18 and the latest is Nov. 1. 3.Once the player starts practicing, a second three-week window opens. At some point during that window, the player must be activated to the 53-man roster or be ineligible to play for the rest of the year. So the earliest a PUP player could be eligible to play is Week 7. The latest is Week 13.

A couple sites do mention the rule that you state, but it wasn't on anything I can link to here.
Thanks for the clarification. Good thing to know.

I knew that I missed someone that I thought was on sure footing.. Gocong.. I really felt at the beginning of camp that he was sure to stick... But I'm not 100% sure anymore. Not that anyone has knocked the coaching staffs socks off, but I think they feel they can do without him..
But hey, it's just a guessing game anyway right?

Well then if the PUP rule remains the same, then I guess I need to revise my thinking on Jackson.. They'll PUP him and if he's solid and none of the other guys are setting the world on fire, they keep him and dump one of them.
Otherwise, he either goes on IR or injury settlement and gone.

I agree.
Physically unable means just that. If you practiced, you were able to perform, then got hurt.
IR is his only option, and we won't go there, nor will we cut him.
Smith goes to the practice squad. I doubt anybody is going to sign him and put him on the regular roster.

A general question first - Why does the NFL have a season long IR system? Why isn't there a 4, 6, 8 game DL like MLB has?
I wouldn't even be able to provide a surprise cut because I think most of us know who is going to make the team. There won't be any surprises.

Say what you will about him, but as a STer he's pretty darn solid.. That's why I said it the way I did...

So, if Seneca Wallace or Hardesty or Cribbs gets cut, you won't be surprised?

There are very few that I would consider a 'surprise cut', but I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that Marcus Benard could be a surprise cut ... It comes down to numbers and if we keep as little as 8 DL he could be looking for another team, but there's a good chance we will keep 9, so I guess I think he is treading on pretty thin water.
It looks like Mitchell may not get to have the opportunity to help his case for sticking on the roster.
Have they seen enough to be satisfied with him?
Surprise 'no' cut will be DT Scott Paxton.

Hardesty isn't a sure thing to make this roster. Jackson being injured along with so many injuries to the receiving corps could push a guy like Hardesty clean off the roster. He needs to show something this week because what I saw last week was enough to get him cut.

So our only other running back being injured means Hardesty could be cut? That makes perfect sense.

He didn't do anything negative. And it was his first game in a year.

You can only carry so many useless players on a roster especially when it comes to playing a certain position. Right now I see both Jackson and Hardesty as useless players.
The Hardesty I saw last week looked like Pashos trying to pull. I could understand if he was a bit hesitant making a cut, but the pure lack of burst was alarming. I doubt he gets cut because of our reach last year but if we hadn't spent a 2nd round pick on him, he would definitely be toast and he still could be.

I agree from the game, but I'm hoping that was first game tentativeness about coming back from the injury.
And that the coaches have forced that out of his system now. Wondering if anyone has seen him at camp and if he's as tentative in practice? are there any open practices left?

No way Hardesty gets cut...I don't see any "bigger names" being cut since the roster depth is pretty weak at most positions....I fully expect us to be deadline players in some small trades to fill out the roster and/or sign some other team's cuts

So if we cut Hardesty who backs up Hillis?
Porter and Smith suck. I never want to see their names mentioned in a browns uniform again.

Maybe they just preemptively put him on IR for the season?
Yuck yuck yuck...
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Hardesty will not be cut. No way. As much as I respect Mourg I think he is way off in left field on this one.

Coye Francies? Would he qualify as a surprise?
I think that most of the top starter/primary backup slots for the whole team are set at this point. Beyond that, no cuts would surprise me. Maybe a guy who has done so well in camp, like Dockery. That would surprise me ..... but I suspect that they will find a spot for him.

In that case, I'll throw in Joe Thomas and Phil Dawson.

I honestly think Owen Marecic looks terrible in every facet of the game and will prove to be the worst pick by Heckert in his 2 drafts. I thought he was a football player..I was mistaken, he doesn't have that fire or at least not that I have seen..unfortunately I don't see them cutting him and it will show throughout the year. We really should have signed Vickers, as he is more than capable of doing anything Marecic can and everything better.
I say Dmitri Patterson but not sure.

Yeah, I have been really underwhelmed by Marecic.
Hopefully he improves with some experience.

He can improve to become what..Serviceable? He seems like he is at his ceiling already..I would hope Heckert is keeping his eyes open for a young upgrade..Clutts looks better than him..as much as I hate saying that. He's not even fast enough to get to the second level before the ball carrier to make a block. He looks like he is in slow motion out there..

Hopefully he can become an effective WCO FB. I don't know if he is still over-thinking stuff on the field, or if he really is that slow. In all honesty, I would almost rather keep 4 RB at this stage than keep Marecic .....but that's not going to happen. He will get his chance to develop.

I'm wondering about Vickers. He only signed a one year deal with Houston? As good as he looked here I would think he could have gotten a decent contract.

I still haven't seen that the Browns have cut anybody, but they'll have to be at 53 by next week so I'm still interested to see who they are going to keep.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.
