Here are the players whom the Browns waived this morning: offensive lineman Branndon Braxton, defensive lineman Andre Carroll, wide receiver L.J. Castile, offensive lineman Calton Ford, cornerback Coye Francies, tight end Evan Frosch, safety Carl Gettis, linebacker Eric Gordon, defensive tackle Travis Ivey, wide receiver Chris Matthews, linebacker Steve Octavien, defensive tackle Ko Quaye, cornerback Ramzee Robinson, safety DeAngelo Smith, linebacker Sidney Tarver and offensive lineman Phil Trautwein. The Browns also terminated the contract of wide receiver Demetrius Williams. http://browns.ohio.com/2011/09/browns-release-17-players-roster-now-consists-of-63/Ten more to go

I didn't watch any pre-season after the starters came out, and didn't see any practices.
But, I thought I read that Braxton was impressing people?

I read that too...but apparently he was awful against the Bears...just downright awful.
I also remember reading that he might be dinged up a bit as well.
I think we will look for a vet at RT & LT backup.

I think that Oneil Cousins signing sealed his fate.
Many of these cut's we will probably hope to sign to our PS.
10 more to come.

Braxton got beat like drum in Chicago , along with the rest of the second unit !
Marecic was out played in Pre Season by the undrafted Free agent Clutts in my opinion .

I think that Cousins, Murray, Vallos and Greco will be our backups, with Cousins and Vallos most likely the gameday actives because of their ability to play multiple positions. I suspect that either Clutts or Marecic will go in the next round. Eric Hagg may hit IR. DBs Patterson and Ventrone may go ...... but then again ... Ventrone may stick just to give people something to complain about .... At least 1 of the RBs is almost certain to go. No way do we go into the season with 5. I think that Smith makes the team. I think that Porter has an outside chance, if Brandon Jackson winds up on IR. He could be gone anyway ... but his only chance as I see it is if Jackson goes to IR. Jarrett Brown could go, and be the practice squad QB. He's got talent, but he is extremely raw. We have a lot of iffy spots at LB. If my last name is Donald, Jacobs, Tarver, or Smith, then I am very concerned. The Browns will probably keep 6 LB in the 4-3. They have the 3 starters and Maiava. That's 4 guys for probably 2 ... maybe 3 spots. Titus Brown makes the team if he will be ready to go soon. I would guess that Smith probably will get one spot ...... and Jacobs and Donald played OK ..... but I don't know that either strongly outshined the other. It'll be interesting to see how it all washes out.

DeAngelo Smith was all over the place against the Bears and had several excellent hits...yet he NEVER wrapped up the ball carrier. It was nuts...big, big hits and no wrap up...and we know where that gets you in the NFL.
Braxton looked awful along with everyone else on the OL. I don't know how coaches can evaluate OL play when only backups are in the game and they are getting killed. Same with a QB who only plays with the end of the roster.
I hope Gettis and Matthews sneak to the PS.

+1..I would rather of had Vickers and even Casey Mathews in the 4th..I think that is stronger than Marecic alone. I wouldn't be opposed to admitting a mistake and using Clutts instead and cutting Marecic.

Oops. I guess Tarver was on the list of players sent packing. I just missed his name.

I have noted several times that tackling ( wrapping up ) must be an ancient art ! .. Never would have seen the Football field as a high school player let alone the NFL..

Donald was tied for number 1 on the defense with 6 tackles in Chicago. He was pretty active. It will come down to numbers and he might make the roster if they feel Gocong wont be ready to go.

I'm looking for the Browns to pick up 3 to 5 players who are being cut by other teams so we still have as many as 13 to 15 players who will end up being cut.
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.

Exactly, and I am Okay with that if you make it right by putting the best players on the field and on the team and Marecic is not that guy.

Maybe not H&H , but the Coaching staff have to be shaky with Hardesty ! He may make it back , but looked way , way out of sorts in his limited playing time..

I missed his brief appearance, but seriously, this kinda front office won't hang onto a guy if they think he can't make it.. I don't think it matters where he was drafted. So, if he's on the team tomorrow, they believe.....

Grossi seems to think that Hardesty's spot is rock solid. (I read it in an "Ask Tony" article during camp) I would tend to agree. They will give Hardesty the chance to come back and show why they drafted him.

Chester Taylor is getting cut today..

I find it strange how easily people here are willing to give up on players, and how they expect the front office to do the same. I just can't believe for a second that they'll give up on Hardesty already.
Or even cut Jackson. He was the big free agent signing. They have a very specific role in mind for him that extends beyond this year. He may go to IR, but I say no way he's getting cut.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I'm not sold on that yet , I said YET ! .. I have to admit that I was not big on taking the chance with Hardesty in the draft for starters . We were not nor are we in the position to take flyers ( think New England ) .. I was was taken back by Heckerts comments on the strength of our Line Backing crew .. Not sure who's Butt he was trying to blow smoke up .. I am just going to take a wait and see attitude and keep my fingers crossed .. Really worried about the back up Tackle spot also ...

I agree, but as a third down back if Jackson gets shelved might be nice. If he re-does his contract..

We could probably slide Hardesty onto the practice squad with little worry of anyone picking him up.

Of all those guys, I was only mildly surprised by Braxton cuz I thought he was impressing the coaches earlier in camp. Anybody got an opinion on Donald, the LB? I've only seen parts of the games (the Bears game not at all) but he flashed a couple of times as far as making a nice play. As others have said, they might cut Marecic, I don't know if it's fair to make a decision on a drafted player after five weeks but hey... he has to show some semblance of belonging. The Broncos drafted Clarett a few years ago and cut him at camp, didn't they? A. Smith sticks as an RB. I kinda like the idea of a fullback named Clutts, anyway.

Not a chance. He would get snapped up in a heartbeat.
Your taking a bet every time you waive a player that no other team sees him as better than their worst player. Do you really think that teams in need of a RB would just ignore him if he was waived?
Really?

Thanks Ytown for this.
So, it looks like maybe cut 1 RB with Jackson going PUP maybe? Not sure we keep 2 FB? Do we keep 4 TE? Cut 2 OL? Cut 1-2 DL (I'm rooting for Derreck Robinson, he impressed me in the one game I got to watch)? Cut 2-3 LB? Cut 1-2 DB? That comes to about 10. Sound about right?

I dont know of any team so desperate for a RB that would take Hardesty. He had one good year in college and has blown out both knees. I would put Clutts up against Hardesty in a 40 yard dash. I just don't have any confidence that he will ever be anywhere close to what he was 2 years ago.

Oh please.
He ran a 4.49 in the 40 at the combine. There is no reason to expect that he is going to be unable to recover that speed. He has everything you look for in a RB ... speed and quickness, power, elusiveness and vision.
He had an injury. Injuries happen. ACL injuries are usually not a repeat injury. He's had both knees, so the expectation is that he will go through the rest of his career without another knee surgery, beyond cleaning out any inevitable buildup.

4 sacks in the preseason, and he showed up almost daily in practice. Strongly hyped by Heckert. He makes the team.

I think he makes it. He was praised quite a bit before the Chicago game. He played extremely well in Chicago. I believe he had two sacks and caused their LT to hold him to avoid another.
