Texas got what they wanted. they wanted their own tv network, didn't want to share revenue, pretty much ran everyone out of that conference. Tom Osbourne knew what was up. Seriously if I'm living in florida, or any state for that matter, why would I want to get the longhorn network.?? Maybe if they had a big 12 network like every other conference, you would be able to see other teams. But to see programs on one school, that would be a bit much. I know I wouldn't go out of my way to get it in my package.

well, that's the point. Texas realized that there is enough of a population in Texas that they can make major $$$ just if they get the Longhorn Network on TX cable networks and as part of an upper sports tier on satellite networks (for Texans that have moved outside the state).

you are correct that they (or ESPN or likely both) overplayed their hand early on the network thinking that the Big12 was solid enough for now. instead, they are seeing the more powerful teams in the conference bolt (A&M, Oklahoma, OkieState).

it'll be interesting to see what Tech, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, and K-State do (or can do as only Kansas has any real cachet) if Texas decides to just throw up their hands and go independent. or if they try to convince the others to just add Houston, SMU, TCU (if they would come, which is doubtful at this point), and Tulsa to the conference.

the only team that doesn't have to worry at all is really Mizzou who can pick between the SEC and Big10 (both of which should welcome their market, programs, and academics with open arms)

-----------------

and honestly, i'm still a big worried about the Big10 in all of this. i'm worried that Delany will think he can wait and overplay his hand as well. and we'll lose out on any of the programs that we can 'hit' on and have to settle for a doomsday scenario that adds very little cachet or media markets to the conference (Rutgers, Pitt, Iowa State, and another filler program).

Best case: ND, Maryland, Syracuse, Mizzou

More likely 'good' case: Mizzou, Syracuse, Rutgers, Navy

so, according to ESPN, Mizzou doesn't think the Big10 has any interest in them so they are pursuing their SEC/ACC options instead.

not to say they would pick us anyway (TX recruits would still welcome SEC while TX, OU, OkState, Mizzou is quite the package for the ACC - if they somehow dropped OkState for ND then it would be ridiculous), but we should at least be throwing our hat in that ring.

LSU's defense is championship caliber, but their qb is almost as bad as joe bauserman

I think they slip up once or twice, their schedule is brutal.

I agree. Not only is Jarrett Lee poor but they don't seem to have the RB corps they have had in recent years. Probably good for a trip-up if the other team scores a defensive TD or ST TD (it's going to be tough to score for real on that defense - maybe South Carolina can?)

But, good lord that DL and secondary are ridiculous.

Rockets take on The Broncos in the Glassbowl tonight at 8pm on ESPN. Come to the game if you're from the area or watch on TV tonight. It's going to be a good one.

Good article below about tonight's contest...
Quote:

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Boise State is well aware of how close Toledo came to knocking off Ohio State last week, just about eliminating any chance that the No. 4 Broncos will be looking past the Rockets on Friday night.

The Broncos, who didn't play last weekend after a season-opening 35-21 win over Georgia, got a chance to watch their next opponent a little more than usual.

They came away a bit surprised and impressed after Toledo scored 15 first-quarter points and came within a play or two of upsetting their in-state rival before losing to the Buckeyes 27-22, in Columbus.

"It caught everybody on the team's attention," said Matt Miller, who became the first freshman receiver to start a season opener under coach Chris Petersen at Boise State. "They probably should have beat Ohio State so we're not going to take them lightly."

It was a nicely timed wake-up call for the Broncos (1-0) who played Toledo a year ago in Boise, and coasted to a 57-14 victory.

Boise State cornerback Jerrell Gavins said the Rockets showed they have more athletes than he expected.

"I actually thought Ohio State was going to blow them out," he said. "I probably shouldn't say that, but they played a pretty good game."

Gavins insisted that the Broncos weren't overlooking the Rockets even before their close call.

"Our preparation hasn't changed," he said.

The focus for the Boise State defense will likely be on Toledo receiver Eric Page who caught 12 passes for 145 yards last week and also threw for a two-point conversion.

The Rockets (1-1) like to hit the small and shifty Page with short passes and let him use his speed. He turned a short catch into a 66-yard touchdown at Ohio State. He's also scored on three kickoff returns in his first two seasons.

Page thinks he can score any time he gets the ball.

"If you don't have that approach," he said, "you don't have the right mindset."

Gavins said it's different covering a smaller receiver than a bigger wideout.

"It changes a lot," he said. "Me being smaller, I can relate to him. I'm just as fast as he is, I'm just as quick as he is, so I have to just be a little more patient when I'm sticking him."

Page caught 11 passes for 120 yards against the Broncos a year ago.

"We knew about him loud and clear last year and couldn't seem to slow him down even," Petersen said. "You're not going to stop him, he's too good."

Boise State spent part of its bye week working on its defense after giving up a handful of big scoring plays against Georgia -- though defense is hardly a weak spot for the Broncos. They did get six sacks against Georgia and bottled up its running game.

And on Thursday, Boise State officials said the NCAA reinstated starting senior safety Cedric Febis, who flew with the team to Toledo. Febis was held out of the team's opener over questions about his eligibility.

The NCAA continues, however, to review the eligibility of two other Broncos, wide receiver Geraldo Boldewijn and defensive tackle Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe. They didn't fly to Toledo.

Peterson plans to continue using backup freshman quarterback Grant Hedrick to spell starter Kellen Moore, one of the nation's top passers, and give opposing defenses something else to worry about.

Hedrick came in during a couple of key plays against Georgia and ran for 18 yards. Peterson said he could see Hedrick was nervous when the coaches told him to get ready.

"His face went white and the blood drained out of his face," Peterson said. "We shoved him out there and away he went."

Toledo coach Tim Beckman, who led the Rockets to a bowl game last year in just his second season, said he's tried to model some of the things he does after Boise State, including playing multiple players at different positions and using multiple formations.

Austin Dantin and Terrance Owens share time for Toledo at quarterback. Dantin has started the Rockets' first two games, but it was Owens who came in for the final drive against Ohio State and nearly led them to a victory.

Peterson said he admires how Toledo uses the two quarterbacks at any time.

"They don't even kind of worry about it," he said. "That's a little bit of our mentality around here."

Toledo likes to mix in a few gadget plays, too.

"It's something we're constantly practicing," said Beckman, who added that it's something his players really like. "We talk about doing it all the time. They probably want do it more."

The Rockets will be hurting on defense, though, especially at linebacker. Dan Molls, their leading tackler a year ago, will miss his second straight game and Robert Bell, a starter at weakside linebacker, is questionable. Cornerback Taikwon Paige is doubtful after suffering an injury at Ohio State.

That's what cracks me up about LSU. On defense they have 5 star talent, as backups. However they usually never have a great offense.

I thought they've been hanging in pretty good. bad play in the red zone after the INT, but they just don't have the guns to keep up with Boise. they are making them work and hanging in as bes they can.

yeah, they stole alot of their concepts from Mike Leach. very similar passing tree to the TxTech system. bubble screens and borderline illegal route-pickoffs to setup YAC.

i'd still take Kellen on my team over all but a handful of QBs though.

Why would anyone hate Boise?

1. They don't talk smack.
2. They're not the most talented team but do field NFL talent.
3. They're the most disciplined team in the country.
4. When they play top 10 teams they usually win.
5. They never get a chance to play in the national championship

I really don't get why anyone would hate them.

I don't hate Boise. But it doesn't hurt that they always schedule those top 10 teams with a free week beforehand. That extra practice doesn't hurt.

The only team I hate is Michigan. But their new coach seems to be a good pick and he sounds like Chris Farley.....

JC: Did anyone see UConn vs Iowa State last night?

Man did I get worked up. Our new coach, Paul Pasqualoni (or whatever) is installing a new system we can't run.

The team was built around Randy Edsall (great coach) so that we run the ball ALL game. Over and over and over. Eventually the other team's defense can't stand it, and our defense is always good, and by the 4th quarter we pull away with a victory.

It works really well. But Pasqualoni has us throwing the ball all game now. Edsall knew we couldn't get top QBs, we couldn't get top players. So we got run blocking O-Linemen and our RBs excel. That's what the team is built for, that and turn overs on defense.

Well the defense is still good, but Coach P calls passing play after passing play. If Edsall was coaching, we'd never lose to this Iowa State team. We were driving the ball at the end of the game. 2nd and 2, we pass it. 3rd and 2, we pass it. 4th and 2, we pass it. He just didn't get it. We don't have a QB for this.

I'm so happy i'm leaving on a ship for 3 months on Monday, thank god I don't have to watch UConn this season. Ugh, they're gonna suck.

I don't think they're weak mentally, I just think they're wildy undisciplined. Penalties killed us these last two weeks - and even taking that into consideration they had the chance to beat OSU on the final drive and hung with Boise for a half... game would have been closer at the half had Cordale Scott caught that wide open pass from Owens that would have gone for a TD. At the end, the defense just had nothing left. Really wish we'd have had Molls the last couple weeks and Marrow last night. Oh well.

BEAT SYRACUSE.

I agree. UT's offense did surprisingly well vs. the lauded BSU defense but shot themselves in the foot in the red zone. They actually matched up pretty well.....a lot better than I thought after coming off the Buckeye game. Kellen Moore and his receivers are the real deal. I wish the Browns had somebody that could just decide "this ball's mine!" like that.

no but a first down would be a really cool thing to get.

speaking of crappy football, why is that both of my teams (and probably both of yours too) always lose the coin toss, and always get deferred.
