What happened to it? It's called negotiation tactics. And it worked.
Brown is a very cheap, very poor owner, but he's shrewd, and he won this time. Was a great move by him.
This was an amazingly good move by him.
He let Palmer stew at home ..... even when every pundit said that he should take whatever he could get and move on. Instead he let another team get desperate enough .... and SLAM then through the table in negotiations.

Isn't it Ironic. We caused this with the hit to Cambell
I hadn't even thought about that
If the Browns could get their ish together in the forseeable future, the AFC North could turn into a pretty epic division.

As much as Mike Brown has been a boob forever...He mustve learned from the Ochocinco trade oops by not taking 2 1sts for him, and couldnt pass this up.
Furthermore...I think the starting price for Andrew Luck just was set

Well, I feel bad for Jason Campbell. He's done in Oakland for his career and he was starting to play better. Unless he's content to be a backup, which I highly doubt.
You don't give up 2 first round picks for a backup QB or someone you are going to rent for the last 9 games of the season.
This is a long-term investment in Palmer as the starting QB.
Waiting for Toad to chime in on the Browns trading for Campbell next year in 3...2...1....

What happened to "we won't trade him"? Mike Brown has proven time and again, he's not his father.. not close.
i think that goes out the window when someone is willing to vastly overpay even what the Bengals might have thought to get for him.
heck, this proves out the 'we won't trade him rhetoric' if the Raiders thought they had to overpay to get the Bengals to listen.
Of course it was rhetoric.. never really thought differently to be honest. I knew in my heart that if the right deal came along, Brown would take it,

I think he probably meant this gives the Bengals 4 1st rd picks over the next 2 years (The Bengals original picks with the ones from the Raiders...or could be 4 if the condition is met)
What other 2 first round picks?

Yes, the one thing we can hope for is that Mike Brown goes back to being Mike Brown.
*Edit* Screw that. The one thing we can hope for is that our FO continues getting us quality players so when the other teams in our division get better, it's to keep up with us, not vice versa.

It occurs to me, what if the Colts decide Manning is long in the tooth, has an injury, & they see Palmer fetches 2 firsts..
They might be thinking, lets get 2 firsts, a 2nd and a 3rd for Manning and then draft Luck?

well, we do have 3x1st rounders in that same timeframe and the 2x2012 picks both look to be higher than either of theirs (right now at least).
also, Dalton is this year's Bradford. he's doing better than expected initially, so a ton of hype is being pushed his way. the Cinci defense is the one pulling the weight there. Dalton has been okay, but nothing great (yet, of course. he's only 6 games in and he missed 1/2 the game vs. us).

Well.. lets qualify that thought dawg.. the second first is a conditional if the faiders get to the playoffs. AND.. they might want to stash the 2nd set of firsts seeing as how they only have a 5th and a 6th left if I recall correctly.
BUT you are quite correct in your point of the rookie wage scale. Now MY head hurts too.

I dunno dude. Not much surprises me in the NFL anymore. Palmer to the faiders for 2 freakin first rounders? Thats pretty close to me seeing Walt cha chaing. Mike B SNOOKERED the faiders.
Edit.. I would be surprised too.. I guess I'm just speculating and chasing stray thoughts. But it is within the realm of possiblity

They only get the 1st rounder in the 2013 if the Raiders win a playoff game this season. Quote:
The first first-round pick is in 2012 and the other is a conditional first-round pick in 2013. Palmer was in the Bay Area on Tuesday morning getting a physical before the deal could be completed.
According to a source, if the Raiders win a playoff game in the 2011 season, the Bengals would get a first-round draft pick in 2013.

Manning's neck would lower his trade value a lot! Sure, Palmer isn't half the QB Manning is....but if Manning can never play again, his trade value is zero (same as Robo).

so weird. we should cheer for the Raiders to win now (to make the 2012 1st rounder later), but then cheer for them to lose their playoff game (to make the 2013 pick a 2nd rounder).
all the while cheering against Atlanta (for our pick) and the usual cheering against Steelers, Ravens, and Bengals.
I need a table or perhaps a flow chart.

Yeah ... have the Raiders win out ... get a first round bye ... finish with the best record in football ... then 1-and-done. No playoff win plus they might only have the 28th pick overall?

I hope the RRRRaiders get into the Playoffs OVER Cincy based on Tiebreakers or something...
That'd be swell...
OR the Raiders win the West, and Cincy sneaks out a Wild Card... And they play each other in the Playoffs...
Good TV...

NOOOOOOOO, because then I would either have to root for the Bengals or root for the Raiders knowing that gives Cincy another first round pick.. that is a BAAAAAD scenario.

maybe good TV for other people, but either the Bengals would advance to the 2nd round or the Bengals would get a 1st round pick. they 'win' either way.
Mike Brown might even tell them to lose

Why? We are not that far removed from the Bengals now and we have 2 firsts this year and it looks like both of our firsts might be slightly higher than theirs.
were lightyears away from where the Bengals are...lightyears...
they have a MUCH better Defense then we do...they have a better DL, better LB, better sateties, and two up and coming good corners...they are ranked 2nd in the entire NFL in total Defense, 3rd against the pass and 6th against the run...with a 4-2 record too boot....
this move sets the Bengals up to go back to being the tough Bengals team of the Ickey Woods era....they could contend for the Super Bowl next year with the right moves.....we are no where near close to them...not to mention Benson is a pretty good RB, and Scott is very under-rated...they have a big time WR....a good up and coming young QB...but that Defense....thats where its at with the Bengals..
you want to make the playoffs? you better have a D just like Cinci...i don't care who you march out there at QB...almost every superbowl winner has had a top 5 D in the last 20+ years..with very few exceptions(Colts)
our D still sucks...Rubin is a great 3-4 NT, but he don't fit the 4-3...the more i look at Phil Taylor...i see "Big Money" Sheard is nothing but a backup De in this league at best, and Mitchell? hahaha...not going there...
we have one "decent" LB..Jackson thats it...Fujita has slowed down...he just don't have it anymore...
Ward is over-rated as all can be...he can't cover anyone..the only Db on this roster that is decent is Haden...thats it...
this team is mostly full of bums....it will take a very longtime to field a roster that consists of at least average NFL talent...right now...were fielding a team that has about CFL level talent on it with a few exceptions...
Phil Taylor has bust written all over him...he looks just like Big Money 2.0....i can see the writing o the walll....

Their defense, while steadily improving, is not the top five defense suggested by statistics.
They've benefited from playing weak offenses - Cleveland, Indy, Jacksonville, Denver. The strongest offenses they have faced are San Fransisco and Buffalo.

The Bengals held the Niners in check.I had Frank Gore on my fantasy team and the Cincy D held him in check. The next week I started a hot Ryan Fitzpatrick vs the Bengals and made him look average.... Their front 7 is better than the Browns front 7....it looks Maualuga has came around and their D line can get after you.

Palmer: It was time By GEOFF HOBSON Posted 1 hour ago a a Carson Palmer at his Raiders introductory press conference on Tuesday. Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer insisted Tuesday night he never said the things attributed to him during his nine-month standoff with Mike Brown and that he respects the Bengals president for giving him his chance in the NFL. “I never said I would never step foot in Paul Brown Stadium again,” Palmer told Benagls.com after his introductory news conference in Oakland. “I loved playing there. It’s a beautiful stadium. I never said any of that stuff.” But he said enough to Brown back in January to get what he wanted Tuesday, which was a trade that gives him a fresh start after eight seasons in Cincinnati yielded two division titles and two Pro Bowls, but also two devastating injuries and two playoff losses. “It was just time for a change. I don’t want to get into specifics,” Palmer said. “It had been eight seasons and it was time. We hadn’t done what we wanted to do. I knew they had talent at the end of last season and I thought what they could get for me would really help them.” Palmer, who prides himself on his privacy and sincerity, said he never wanted his trade demand to become public and indicated he was horrified the way the story snowballed. He said he could understand Brown’s argument that he had signed a contract that had four years left “to a point," but he continued to believe a trade could benefit both sides. “I know it was a selfish decision, but I thought it could work for both and I guess they didn’t think so until now,” Palmer said. “The hardest thing was being a distraction after fighting that kind of stuff for eight years. I love those guys in that locker room and that made it extremely tough.” Palmer won’t elaborate why. He did say that the rehiring of head coach Marvin Lewis wasn’t a reason. He did say when he heard of a trade the Bengals turned down just before the regular season, he thought he was going to be retired for the rest of his life and began to think about other professions. In fact, when he went to bed at 10:30 Monday night with the trade deadline less than 18 hours away, he thought he was retired. “I had no idea anything was going on until last night when I got a call from my agent,” Palmer said of David Dunn. “And even then I just didn’t think he’d trade me. Then I got a text at 4 a.m. that said to get on a plane to Oakland. It’s been a wild day.” The day officially closed the book on the Palmer Era in Cincinnati and it will be a mix of chapters. Despite getting booed when it was announced he got his 20,000th passing yard and having garbage dumped on his lawn last season, Palmer isn’t bitter. “It was time for a change for the fans, too,” Palmer said. “There are great fans there. With all they’ve been through and seen, you won’t find a more loyal fan base.” Palmer says he’s excited about stepping in PBS again, which he’ll do next season. But he says he doesn’t want to play the Bengals in this year’s playoffs. “Not with that defense. I don’t want to play that defense. I know what Zim (defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer) can do after practicing against them for years,” Palmer said. Palmer authored some thrilling moments. The 24-point fourth quarter in Baltimore. The six-TD pass game in Cleveland. The 38-31 shootout win over Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger at Heinz Field that secured the 2005 AFC North title. The seven times in the last drive of a game or overtime he got the lead or a tie during the 2009 North title season. “I don’t really remember games or individual plays,” he said. “The things I remember are going out to eat after games with the guys and their families. Just being around some great guys. They might have been great players or average players, but there were some great guys that came through there.” Yes, Palmer has watched the Bengals on TV. He knows too many coaches and players not to pull for them. He likes the looks of his successor, Andy Dalton. “He looks like a good kid,” Palmer said. “I know he can play because I watched him a lot last year. TCU always seemed to be on.” Asked if he regretted not showing up for Jay Gruden’s new West Coast offense that now has a bunch of eager young receivers, Palmer said, “They’re doing well. I knew they were going to be good after what I saw at the end of last year.” The trade means Palmer is going to have to scrub the 10-day hunting trip he had planned next month for nearby Georgetown, Ohio. He was going to hook up with a hunting buddy who lives in Georgetown and bring along some college friends and brother Jordan, another former Bengals quarterback. “I know some fans wouldn’t like to see me,” he said. “But it’s a great place.” web page

Hehehe.....Nah, Palmer is no longer a Bengal, therefore I have no ill will towards him. I didn't have any ill-will when Frye was a Raider. I just felt sorry for the Raiders!
Wish these glasses worked when watching the Squeelers.....

Saints were 20th in points, 25th in yards. Giants were 17th in points, 7th in yards. 2001 Patriots were 6th in points, 24th in yards. 1998 Broncos were 8th in points, 11th in yards. 1994 49ers were 6th in points, 8th in yards.
Including the Colts team that you mentioned that's six teams in the past twenty years that have won the Super Bowl without having a top five defense.
