I don't like it.
I don't like the character issues. I think the Ravens released him because he is out of gas. Think about it... they gave up their leading rusher and kept schlep backup (getting paid 1st round $$$) Kyle Boller. Savage signed RD to a 4-year contract prior to last season. He made it through 1 year of that deal... WTF? That is not good management.

Unless, the RG/LT situation is addressed this pickup won't matter - Lewis will average 2.5-3 yards per carry and everyone will say he is washed up.

Brady Quinn anyone?

I'll think Joe Thomas is what this is all building up too.

Actually, I think this is setting us up for a QB. We'll take either Quinn or Russell, whichever one is there. Not saying I agree or don't agree with taking a QB.. but that is what we are going to do.

I don't care what the hell we do. Whatever it is I know i'm going to be suprised. Almost every move Phil has made this off-season has made me change my opinion on which way we will go.

Ugh! I really don't feel like having the same conversation that I had earlier today on the other Lewis thread but I still think AP is a possibility. Why? Because we get rid of Reuben and still need a change of pace back to give Jamal rest on third down and to provide that "home-run" capability. I know some (okay, a lot) disagree with this, but with AP's durability issues, it wouldn't be a bad move to rotate him in behind a bruiser like Lewis, much in the same way the Saints did with Reggie Bush & Deuce McCallister. Or like Maroney & Dillon. Or Benson & Jones. I know JL wants to be the featured back and HE WILL BE but he's gotta know his time is winding down and we need to develop a back behind him. This does NOT take us completely out of the running for AP. Besides, Phil needs everyone to still believe we will take AP so he has leverage for a possible trade down. He needs to keep the options open and by replacing Droughns with Lewis, he does that while upgrading a crucial position on our offense. | | |

He got in trouble with the law once, and that was before he was even in the league. He just didn't get punished for it untill last year.

If my memory serves me right, I don't think he has been in any trouble in the past 6 years?

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Lewis, who graduated from high school in Atlanta, played for the University of Tennessee before foregoing his senior year to play for the Ravens. But before arriving on the Knoxville campus, the newspaper reported, Lewis, who was then 18, was received a 3-year probation sentence and paid a fine of $1,000 for a shoplifting charge

The indictment accuses Lewis of arranging a meeting in June of 2003 between a woman who claimed to have a large amount of cocaine to sell and an associate of Lewis who allegedly wanted to buy the drugs, Miller reported.

ok.. what exactly is the time frame for someone to be considered a 'character guy' again?.. btw this also goes for the steinbach signing (drunk boating)... just saying that it appears that the whole 'class act' stuff goes out the window when PS or RAC may be on the hot seat..

Lewis may be Reuben's replacement......and then AP is still a possibility (since we'd need two RB's).
Here's the thing, all we have to do is wait out the bonus for Reuben (march 15th?). If it's paid, we know AP isn't coming to Cleveland.

Fair enough.
But you can't honestly say that Steinbach has "character issues" because of the boating incident. You can get something like for having a beer or two in an hour. And do you know how many people drive or operate a boat after a beer or two?

I agree with you. If he's been clean for a long time, anything he did before the NFL doesn't bother me. He was a kid and made a mistake. I never held that against him before (I only disliked him for kicking our butts so often).
Anyway, CBS.Sportsline is saying its a one year deal. Which would really still open the door for AP. And really leans toward pushing Reuben out of it.

http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/CLE/10045850CLEVELAND (March 7, 2007) -- Free agent running back Jamal Lewis agreed to a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns, a person within the NFL told The Associated Press. Lewis was released last week in a salary-cap move by Baltimore, which elected not to pay their career rushing leader a $5 million roster bonus. He'll now join the Browns, Baltimore's AFC North rival, who were last in the league in rushing in 2006. Lewis visited the Browns on March 7 and decided to sign with the team before leaving town, said the person who has knowledge of the negotiations and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the 27-year-old Lewis hasn't signed yet. With the Ravens reportedly interested in acquiring Buffalo running back Willis McGahee, Lewis decided to look elsewhere and found a fit with the Browns -- the team he torched for an NFL-record 295 yards in 2003. One year deal. AP is still in the mix!

Yessir! Now either take Thomas or trade down, grab Levi Brown and another nice pick, like a cornerback.

Wow... Totally did not think this would happen... The price must be right. Hope he still has something left in the tank. Good news is he was barely touched two games a year for most of his career.

As much as I would love to have Adrian Peterson on our team, I still want the Browns to go Joe Thomas and really sure up our o-line. Lewis can definitely be our number one back for this year, and can produce well behind a good line. Face it, any running back can produce behind a good line. The line is the most important aspect of the offense.
Now, what my ideal plan to do would be to draft Joe Thomas this year, another guard in the 3rd, and worry about drafting a RB next year in the first...someone like...Ray Rice.

If we don't take Peterson this year, we better do all we can to trade up next year and take... Darren McFadden. Darren McFadden will be twice the NFL player AP will be anyway.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Found this on Droughns contract extension:

"Total value of the contract over four years is $13.2 million, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. Droughns will average $4 million a year in the last three years beginning in 2007."

Well, according to this....Reuben got screwed by Savage....he had to prove last season that 2005 wasn´t a fluke...he didn´t = he won´t see the 4mil per season beginning 2007...so he basically played for 1.2mil last season...

I´d like to know his SB on that extension...so we know how much of a cap hit he represents if we cut him

1 year deal with Lewis I´m cool with btw....
He should be motivated playing for a contract

that wasn't the real issue for me, its more about the character of the organization using the "class" thing to make us the 'likable losers'. you know "well at least we're not the rats or bungholes".. i really don't have a problem with signing these guys if they will help the team win.. people make mistakes everyday, some people just get caught more than others.. lucky for me that drinking while computing isn't punishable or i would be banned from every web site out there

He's only here on a 1-year deal from what they're saying, so we definitely need to draft a Rb in the first 3 rounds. Adrian Peterson is still in the picture, but I would love Antonio Pittman in round 2 or 3 as our back of the future.

That is not what I'm saying. I said, IF we don't draft Peterson, we better trade up and take McFadden. (assuming he comes out). I don't believe in waiting a year to fill a need because there will be someone better. I'm just saying, IF we decide to go a different route, we better take McFadden next year. And, I was just stating that I think McFadden will be a better NFL RB. Not saying we should wait, just saying what we should do, if we do pass on AP.

To me, the one year deal is an audition, and why would he WANT to audition here. joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach. We are taking Joe if he is there and then we take a running back next year.

As of now, I consider this an insurance policy.
Droughns was hurt last year, and the truth is that he is a converted FB playing as a RB.

Given the additional options of Wright, Harrison, et al. it does not hurt to stockpile with a veteran back.

The only negative on the signing is the past college arrest. For me that is a big turn-off, but I don't have the insight that Phil would have to determine if that is a present concern.

Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!…. That did not age well.

If I wanted to wait on someone, I would want to wait on a QB. A guy by the name of.... Andre' Woodson. QB from Kentucky.
This kid makes all the throws. He plays VERY well against SEC defenses, without an SEC offense at Kentucky. There isn't a throw that this kid can't make. Mark my word... Andre Woodson will be a top 10 pick in next years draft.

I do have to say that if a choice came between Peterson and Thomas, I really can't complain either way.
Now with Lewis, we'd have a great one-two punch with he and Peterson.

With Thomas and Steinbach in front of Lewis, we'd definitely cause some injuries to the front 7 of other teams.

They way I look at it, this move is an incomplete. We don't know what the terms were of the deal and we don't know if he will be a featured back or part of a tandem 1-2 punch. And if it is a 1-2 punch, we don't know who the other punch is. There is alot variables that could make this signing a good one or a bad one.

We had this discussion on here when PPE first made this board, and most people agreed with me. I want to know if you agree with this as well.... the Browns ruined Couch, who showed glimpses of being a very good NFL QB, while playing with less talent than we have on this team. I really believe that if McNabb had been drafted by Cleveland and Couch went to Philly.. Couch would be a pro-bowl QB, and McNabb would be out of the league.

Awesome! I know people have had ranging remarks on him, but he has stayed clean for a few years now and he ran for over 1100 yards with bone spurs last year. This may be a big steal for us if he is healty! he is only 27, man he could have a monster year next year. Great move and a huge upgrade over ruben. This still leaves the door open for peterson imo, but what a pickup. got a high pick who is a great rb in FA. Could be the steal of this FA class.

Well if we do infact draft Peterson, who BTW i'm not pimping just making an observation of which way I think Phil will go. We could be drafting a QB next year if Frye falls on his face. I don't think we will be drafting one this year if it's not in the first round.

I don't know why everyone keeps saying Joe Thomas. I highly doubt that he will be there at #3, and even if he is, I would prefer us to draft AP due to his potential and explosiveness

OG can be picked (hopefully) in rd 3, with a guy like Beekman.
