Brian Robiskie, the latest player to take a spin on the Jaguars’ wide receiver merry-go-round, has high expectations.

Robiskie was claimed off waivers from Cleveland last week.

“I think I can be great, given the right opportunity,” Robiskie said after his first practice Monday with the Jaguars. “I think I’ve got a good opportunity here, so we’ll see what happens.”

He thought he was getting that opportunity when he was drafted in the second round by the Browns out of Ohio State in 2009, the 36th player taken.

Robiskie’s father, Terry Robiskie, was a former Browns assistant coach who spent the final five games of the 2004 season as the Browns’ head coach after Butch Davis resigned. Brian was even a former Browns ball boy.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said when he was drafted. “To come back here and be a part of this team, this franchise is unbelievable and I feel so blessed.”

But it never worked out for Robiskie in Cleveland.

After catching 127 passes for 1,866 receiving yards at Ohio State, he caught just 39 passes in 31 games for 441 yards for the Browns, including just three in six games this year.

He is not eager to talk about what went wrong in Cleveland.

“Whatever happened up there, it’s up there. It’s behind me. I’m a Jacksonville Jaguar now. I’m excited about moving forward,” he said.

On being cut, he said, “It’s part of the business. When something happens, you have to deal with it and make the most of the next opportunity.”

There’s no doubt he’ll get an opportunity with the Jaguars, who have been searching for wide receivers all season.

He replaces Mike Sims-Walker, who was signed by the Jaguars on Oct. 19 after being cut by the St. Louis Rams.

Sims-Walker played in two games, caught one pass and aggravated a chronic knee injury in the last game against Houston. He was placed on injured reserve last week and will undergo surgery today.

Coach Jack Del Rio wasn’t sure of the exact nature of the injury.

“I don’t spend a lot of time trying to play doctor. I just get a report on whether I have the guy available or not. He’s out and needs surgery,” he said.

Then there was Chastin West, who was signed off the Green Bay practice squad on Sept. 20. Considering how good the Green Bay passing game is, even being on their practice squad seemed to be a good credential.

But he caught one pass in four games and was inactive the last two games.

Last year, they claimed Jason Hill off waivers in San Francisco and he worked his way into the starting lineup this year, but has just 19 catches.

It is uncertain where Robiskie will fit in for the Jaguars.

“It’s a fresh start as far as we’re concerned,” Del Rio said. “We’ll bring him up to speed and go from there.”

Robiskie is one of seven wide receivers on the team along with Hill, West, Mike Thomas, Cecil Shorts (who has yet to catch a pass in his rookie season) and Jarett Dillard (who has just six catches) and special teams ace Kassim Osgood.

Robiskie, a two-time academic All-American, fits the high-character profile the Jaguars like. He’s noted as a crafty receiver with good hands, but he’s not a speed burner and was clocked in 4.48 and 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.

At 6-feet-3 and 209 pounds, he has good size and gives the team a big receiver, but he needs to work on his strength and his ability to beat press coverage and create separation.

“He was out there working hard today. He looked good. He’s got long limbs and good ball skills,” cornerback Derek Cox said after Robiskie’s first practice.

Sims-Walker was able to start playing immediately because he was familiar with the system. Robiskie is getting a crash course in the playbook so it remains to be seen how quickly he will move into the lineup.

“At the end of the day, you have to make plays on the ball and help the quarterback by making catches,” Robiskie said, “I feel I can do that.”

Robiskie, who will turn 24 on Dec. 3, says he looks forward to working with a young group of receivers and a young quarterback in Blaine Gabbert.

“Any time you’ve got that, you’ve got a chance to grow together,” Robiskie said.

You don't produce, you get waived. Frustrating for a lot of you I know because he was a Buckeye.

Not really...

Frustrating because we used a 2nd round pick to get him.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I think the flash he showed towards the end of last season made it a little worse...

I'm still curious why we kept Mitchell over robo. Not that I'm a robo fan and I'm certainly far from an OSU fan. The simple fact is, even sparingly we used robo, we don't use Mitchell at all.

My best guess is that he fell out of favor with the coaching staff...he has the skills...just for whatever reason he can't play on sundays....He isn't the first guy frm college that could play but not make it in the NFL...

Our QBs sucked pretty bad last 3 years so that doesn't help him either....i feel like if he went to some place like the Colts or the Pats he might have been a solid starter...

I think they realize that what we saw from Robo was all that we were ever going to see. Whereas with Mitchell they are hoping with some seasoning he can become a contributor. Mitchell has the athletic ability but needs to learn the game and the nuances of the position.

Just my guess.

Clearly you don't come here often otherwise you would know, almost nobody wants us to pick OSU players... Wierd as that sounds,, there have only been a few in the last 10 or so years that anyone even wanted on this team..

Probably something to do with projectability. We probably see Mitchell with more potential upside.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Brian Robiskie
Pros Good hands.doesn't double catch. good size.very good blocker

Cons. can't beat jams off the LOS. Gets rerouted easily.doesn't make DB's open their hips when he needs to break off a route. Body language is easy to read. Inconsistant effort. Lacks speed to blow past CB's.
will not fight through a cb to get the ball.
Not creative after the catch.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed receiver Brian Robiskie on injured reserve and promoted defensive tackle Corvey Irvin from the practice squad.

The team claimed Robiskie off waivers from the Cleveland Browns last month, but he didn't play a single down in Jacksonville because of a hamstring injury. He aggravated the injury in practice Thursday. Jacksonville has 19 players on IR.

The team also signed receiver Charly Martin to the practice squad.

Irvin spent the last six weeks on Jacksonville's practice squad. A third-round draft pick by Carolina in 2009, Irvin spent his rookie season on injured reserve after tearing a knee ligament. He spent 13 weeks on the Panthers' practice squad last season and was on the Detroit Lions' practice squad earlier this season.

Martin played in eight games the last two seasons for Carolina.

Hmm, he was never health enough to play in a game for a receiver desperate team like Jacksonville ..... I wonder if he was hurt while he was here?
