All I know is , Hillis carried this team on his back ( Literately ) .. I know he has a bad Hamy problem , I know Wallace ( super star ) is running his mouth .. i know Mary whats her name writes article about how Patterson has excelled this season .. I know Schumur is over his head as a Head coach .. I know Heckert and the Big easy has made some bone head move the first two seasons in charge ( Hardesty for starters / two of the slowest LBer's in the league / Totally happy with the WR core / Pathos is the answer at RT / Brown , Young and even maybe Your favorite target McCoy .. I could go on and on and on.. I am willing Hillis the WHOLE season before I cut him off at the KNEES !

That's a matter of opinion based on your (the royal "your", not necessarily 'Toad) perception of his value. As for the comment about what the organization felt he was worth...you're better than that. I know you are.
Your belief in me warms my heart, Adam.
Here's why I believe he's overvaluing himself.....If Holmgren and this organization....actually......if the team under Lerner at all.......had a history of shorting the players in terms of not giving them what they are worth, I'd be less confident in my statement. Since we have given fair value to guys like Thomas, Cribbs, Moore, Steiny, Watson, etc etc, that tells me they made a fair offer to Hillis. Since Hillis has now gone to his third agent, and since he hasn't gotten anywhere with the organization, that tells me loudly and clearly that Hillis has overvalued himself.
Is it $5 million per year? Is it $10 million guaranteed? I don't know the exact number, but I don't need to know it. Had we given Hillis even $3 million per season starting this year, he'd be BADLY overpaid for what he's given to the team this year and the last few games of last season.
That's why I say I don't need to know a number to know he's overvalued himself.
Quote:
As I stated before, I'm not talking about Thomas, Cribbs, Wallace or Mack. They didn't criticize him.
I only quoted from your last post, so I didn't know you were talking about guys other than those four However, yes, they are criticizing him. One of'em said his antics with throwing the ball at the goalposts didn't go over well. That's a criticism. The very fact they were willing to talk to the media about all this represents a criticism. As for the unnamed guys, I do think they are chickencrap, but I'm glad for the truth to be coming out, even if I didn't care for the delivery.

Actually, that wasn't the explanation given at all. LeCharles Bentley, since quitting WKNR, has an Internet "radio show" podcast. He booked Peyton Hillis to appear for an interview on his podcast. The interview was to take place at the Boys & Girls Club on Halloween. Bentley then promoted the event as "Halloween with Hillis" for about a week prior to the date, and, the night before, called Peyton's manager and brother to confirm that Hillis would appear for his interview. On Monday, Hillis for whatever reason decided not to appear for the interview.
Here's Hillis's explanation, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
Quote:
-"His latest slip was a missed Halloween party Monday for the Cleveland Boys and Girls Club. Hillis apologized again Thursday for what he said was a "miscommunication" with his management, explaining that after finishing treatment for his hamstring injury at 4:30 p.m., he didn't know where he was supposed to be for the party an hour later."
How can a player have committed to a function, yet not know what time he was supposed to be there?
Like I said, in a best case scenario, he was a dope for agreeing to do something but wasn't bright enough to know where it was at or when it was. In his worst case scenario, he blew it off and is blaming it on his brother. In either case, a dope is a dope is a dope, and his excuse doesn't at all wash. When a guy admits he was supposed to be somewhere but doesn't show, the only excuse that a guy can give outside of admitting pure guilt is to blame it on a "mis-communication."
Hillis knew he was supposed to be there. No matter how it played out, in the end, he just didn't give enough of a crap to make an effort. That's starting to sound familiar with him.....

I disagree. Yea you can get a Reuben Droughns 1100 yard nothing special back anywhere. Hillis was special last year for a time. Thats not replaceable so easily.

Apparently for Hillis it's not replicable so easily either.

As a sidenote, Heres what Reubens doing now as per Wiki. Reuben Droughns (pronounced /ˈdroʊnz/; born August 21, 1978 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American football running back who is currently the head coach for the Serbian team Vukovi Beograd,[1] the two-time champions of the Central European Football League.[2] He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He played college football at Oregon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuben_Droughns

Droughns and Hillis are pretty much the same guy in terms of what they gave us. Neither was super-fast. Both were bruisers. Both could catch. Both could play fullback. Both were fumblers.
But what do they prove? That you don't have to pay big bucks to find a back. Both guys were taken from the Donks for a box of spare parts.
Looking around the league at all the various backs, it's not like a QB where you gotta spend a 1st round pick to get a guy who can take you all the way. Lesean McCoy was a 2nd rounder. Jones-Drew was a 2nd rounder. Fred Jackson was an Arena league guy. Frank Gore was a 4th rounder. Forte was a 2nd rounder. Michael Turner was a 5th rounder. Arian Foster was an UDFA. Ray Rice was a 2nd rounder. Ben Tate was a 2nd rounder. Shonn Greene was a 3rd rounder. James Starks was a 6th rounder.
Many of these guys moved around in free agency. Some, like Hillis and Droughns were trades, etc etc.
So finding a RB isn't hard, and you don't have to spend a 1st rounder to get one.

Glad I could make your day The direct quote I read from Hillis is, "There was a lot of miscommunication between me and the management that I had, and if I knew the full depths of it, I wouldn't have missed it...Like I said, it was misinformation between me and my management about what it was, where it was and stuff like that". That sits in just about perfect accordance with the explanation I've heard and that I put forth above. Sounds to me like the ball got dropped somewhere between LeCharles Bentley and Petyon's brother. If LCB didn't explain that he was booking a children's event around the interview to his brother, or his brother didn't convey that to Peyton, then all you can fault him for is blowing off an intervew with Bentley, and I don't think anybody would really have an issue with that. linkThe hang-up on the contract deal is, quite obviously, that the team overpaid a completely expendable player in Chris Gocong and then made it known to the public. They shot themselves in the foot, from a certain point of view, because by doing that they set a benchmark for what they're willing to pay a mid-tier, expendable piece. That said, I don't think they've ever had any real issue in re-signing Hillis unless they could get him for a bargain. I think that when they traded for him, Tom Heckert probably took him as a throw-in piece, thinking that because Mangini wanted him then it'd just be that much more rope for Mangini to hang himself with. There was an article about Hillis last season about how Mangini had first taken note of Hillis in 2008 when Hillis had a huge game against Mangini's Jets. Heckert didn't want anything to do with him, and didn't think much of him when he traded up to reach for Hardesty in the draft. Then Hillis actually had a pretty good year and the front office was forced to go through the motions of trying to re-sign him and now are just stonewalling with a low-ball offer. It's pretty clear that if he goes into free agency he's not going to re-sign with Cleveland, and there's no way in hell the team is going to use the franchise tag on him and pay him more in one season than they're hesitant to pay him over the course of three. There, plenty of conspiracy theory fodder for you to play with

No kidding. Here's an article about Heckert's acquisition of Hillis with some comments: "Obviously we liked Peyton, but we didn't think he was 'the guy' and (would) have all this production...We thought he'd be a good running back and a backup fullback. We talked about how we could use him, whoever the running back was, Jerome (Harrison) or Montario, and use Peyton as a fullback who can catch, where we'd have two guys in the same backfield that could run and catch." He states later that they decided to take the player because they couldn't find anyone to give them decent draft picks for Quinn. Apparently Heckert valued Quinn higher than a 2nd and a 3rd round pick. link

So Gocong, who is at least a starting linebacker in the NFL, is grossly overpaid at $5.6 million a year (on average).

Because of his actions and attitude. The team made it clear that they were willing to re-sign him (him being Hillis, a player who has had one successful season in four). Then he moped around for whatever reason. And now it has gotten to the point where his teammates (not the front office) thought he needed an intervention about his attitude.

Yea Toad and others have been saying this for years.. Good running backs are a dime a dozen. I'll take just ONE you can keep the other 11. When was the last time Cleveland had a consistant running back ( more than a few games) other teams game planned for ? I'm old and can barely remember names like Mack,Kelly,Byner let alone Brown. Can't wait for next year so we can pick up one of these guys up with our 2nd 4th round pick or maybe a 5th or 6th and plug him in to start terrorizing the league.

All you have to do is use common sense. He went through THREE agents......let me say that again......He went through THREE AGENTS......to try and get a new deal. The organization said he wasn't worth what he wanted. Ergo, he wasn't worth the money he wanted.
well, let's see, so far I've heard he wanted 10 million for 3 years, 10 million over unspecified years, 5 million a year, 3 million a year all guaranteed, 16 million over 6 years.
Which one do you propose we believe?
As for him switching agents, I grant you, that's odd.., very.
But all it really could be saying is he wasn't happy with his representation. And that doesn't necessarily mean the problem was money.
Where did you get the agent thing by the way.. I'm sure you are right, I just must have missed it.

"I think everybody's noticed a little bit of a change in him, but he could have some family issues or something," said Wallace. "Maybe his priorities have changed. We have a whole new staff, so a lot of things have changed. Maybe some of it's overblown."

He expected him to be a non-factor. A backup fullback who might catch some passes out of the backfield. His words, not mine.
Quote:

...because the coach had said he liked him, and he couldn't find a team that would give them the draft picks that they wanted for Brady Quinn. So he took a player plus picks. He hadn't followed Hillis since high school. Again, his words, not mine.

He didn't want him to fail. He expected him to be a non-factor. And I'm not complaining that he drafted a running back (though trading up to draft a player with serious injury concerns makes me question his ability as a talent evaluator).
Quote:

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but its been stated in the media several times that Hillis' representation is using Gocong's deal as a jumping-off point.
Quote:

Yeah, he's overpaid. Not all starting linebackers are created equal. A guy who was ranked 107th in the NFL in tackles last season and has never had more than 75 in a season is not worth the money Gocong got.

I'm not going to hold Hillis responsible for not getting playing time in Denver under a coach who refused play him even though he produced when put on the field. Hillis had one year here, and he produced. Players who produce should get paid. I'm also not going to hold having a tweaked hamstring against him. It's an injury that takes longer to return from than the team is giving him, and has absolutely nothing to do with any sort of contract issue whatsoever.
I'm not saying he's absolved from any blame whatsoever, but the front office's handling of the whole situation has been pathetic and done no favors to the player or the team. Shurmur should have defended his player when he missed the Miami game but threw him under the bus instead. He should have stated when he injured his hamstring that he was being shut down for three weeks minimum, end of story. Tom Heckert shouldn't be commenting on the status of the negotiations to the media beyond something to the effect of "its an ongoing process that's between the player, his representation and the team." Not "we tried but we were so far apart that we just had to break things off." Holmgren should not be saying "we're prepared to let him test free agency and maybe we can re-sign him then."

Didn't Hillis have about 1600 all purpose yards last year? After Braylon, and KW2, and now this, I'm beginning to think it's a conspiracy to keep the Browns without offensive talent. Hey if Getting a runningback is so easy, ( a productive one) then Why didn't these guys get 1600 yards? Jason Wright. Mike Bell. Thomas Clayton. ? Sickening! Sickening! Oh yeah, don't forget to set your "days without major dissappointment/embaressment as a Browns fan, counter back to Zero! Every year. Every year, they pass this baloney off as a commitment to , or the product/performance of a professional NFL football team. What Kind of NFL team, What kind of Arena league team, changes it's roster every 90 days? ????????????? We have to tolerate this? We have to put up with this? Again? I'm frustrated. On August 1, of 2011, who were the top offensive players on this team? McCoy, Hillis, Watson, Cribbs, and Massaquoi. Hillis is out because of a quit scenario? ( someone, one side or the other can't be convinced that he should play anymore for the team, so someone, one side or the other is giving up on the relationship) Isn't that what happened with Jurivicious? Jurivicious was signed for 6 years, ... he was going to be around, one of the pieces of the puzzle. Isn't that what happened with Anthony Henry? according to what was said on this board. Isn't that what we've heard described as to why they parted ways with Kw2, and Braylon Edwards? The argument, they won't stay here so ya might as well get something for them as they rush out the door. Nobody wants to play football in Cleveland. Anyone who is successful, REALLY doesn't want to play football in Cleveland. Since the 1st YEAR of free agency, the Browns cannot keep a team together. Every time they get a playoff team or a team with any real offense, they dismantle it in less than 2 years. OK! so What does it all mean? We're supposed to cheer for Thomas Clayton now. Or What's his name? Or Mr Tryout? Nice! Bad idea. A poor way to gather respect around the league. ... Hmm.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

It's football,, a game.
In the grand scheme of things, it's meaningless.

No, I think it can happen anywhere. The prevailing theme of "what have you done for me lately" isn't just a NE Ohio theme.

Might as well get used to articles like this. This is just the tip of the iceberg. The locker room is in disarray an the team is screwed without a real coach. Fact is, we're not going to get one until Learner gets a clue and sends el presidente packing. I know this ain't gonna happen any time soon, and tearing down and starting over seems ridiculous, but this cancerous cluster fark needs to be purged yesterday.
This right here...
Randy Lerner is ranked as the 4th WORST owner in the NFL by Forbes Magazine
http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eimh45gjh/the-worst-4-randy-lerner-cleveland-browns
The guy is a joke...He has not even made the playoffs one stinking time...in fact this team has been a total joke since his dad died.
Al Lerner made mistakes, yes he did...but there was ZERO question that Al Lerner actually cared and the guy actually wanted to freaking win!
Say what you want about Al, but he got this team into the playoffs in its 3rd year of being an expansion team...in fact...we were 1 dennis northcutt drop away freom beating the Steelers in the AFC Playoffs....say what you want...Al Lerner actaully cared about this team!
Al Lerner spent a TON of time IN CLEVELAND....he was around the facility all the time, he was usually always at the home games, and he was at the away games sometimes too...Randy Lerner hardly comes around..the guy is a joke....Even Al Davis...there was no question about Al Davis commitment to the Raiders...sure he got a little senile in his old age, but when he was younger the Raiders were always a pretty good team....Jerry Jones...yes he makes mistakes, but again...theres no question he cares about his team and theres no question about Jones' commitment to winning...
The Rooney's and Biscotti's are ALWAYS at the home games, ae always around the team and the facilieies, they actuallty care about their franchise. All Jr. cares about is a paycheck.
You look at all the good teams around the league, they all have one thing in common...they have good ownership...our owner is a freakin joke....Jr. is the biggest thing holding this team down....in fact...I believe Jr. was a big part of the reason Bill Cowher said No....
Why can i say that? Simple:
1. Bill cowher was used to good, solid, loyal leadership in the Rooney's.
2. After Crennell and Savage had a 10 win season and Lerner gave them an extension,. he turned around and fired them less then a year later.
Now if your Bill Cowher looking at that situation from the outside...no way in no how would you go work for a guy like that...a guy that wouldn't even honor his agreement....You don't give someone a contract extension and then fire them less then a year later...its just bad form...its idiotic....Lerner should have gave them atleast a 2nd year out of that extension as a sign of good faith...but of course...in typical Jr. Fashion....he blew it.
Theres a reason Shurmur was the best we could get....
This team is a joke as it stands.....Holmgren and Co is part of the problem, but its not only them.
The SOLE BLAME for the woes of this organization lies directly at the feet of our incompentent careless owner...this guy is a joke beyond jokes...this team will not win jack squat until we get a real owner who has a clue and actually cares....
Hey Randy! if your "Golden Boy" Holmgren doesn't save your franchise...why don't you do this city a favor and sell the team to an owner who actually cares!
As much as i hate Art Modell...there was no question that he cared, and no question the man was commited to winning.....Al Lerner....oh how i wish we could back up time, and you could change your will to leave ownership of this team to someone else who is actually commitied to winning and caring because your son has done nothing but show blantant incompetence and has turned this team into the joke of the NFL
Even the Bengals down in Cinci got it right.
I was ridiculed on here for saying Marvin Lewis was a pretty good coach...he has only had what..1 maybe 2 seasons with less then a .500 record...2 division titles, 2 playoff appearances...and now he has a team in 2nd for the division and they may even get into the PO again.....Marvin Lewis is a good coach...he is getting a lot of out his players....I was hoping the Benglas would have been dumb enough to can Lewis, and Holmgren would have been smart enough to hire him (i know thats asking alot) say what you want but i called it that Lewis was a good coach and Cinci was smart to keep him..i called it last year before the season was over.
My point is...Jr. is a joke....and Holmgren is in way over his head...and Shurmur....i just shake my head....in reality i fell bad for Shurmur...Jr. and Holmgren put Shurmur in a crap situation...and Shurmur was not ready yet to be a Head Coach....atleast not under these circumstances....it will be Shurmur who takes the raps for this mess, and to be honest with you...as a person, as a man...i like Shurmur....I think he's a good dude...but Holmgren and Jr. are going to ruin this guy's chances.....its sad really.

Maybe it can, but I don't care about the other 31 teams And furthermore the next time the players decide to have an intervention, please keep it behind close doors and in house. Those players who went public should have exercised better tact. That was a classless act on their behalf imo. If I where the Coach I would have fined them all who went public. Can you tell how much this me? Hillis might be behaving like a butt head, but that doesn't condone others from hanging him out to die. All that served was to add fuel to an already out of control fire. I am ashamed of this team right now.

this has certainly turned into a cluster.... I think both sides agreed to disagree on the price of hillis... Hillis has obviously overvalued himself...this in itself is probably normal The browns obviously said if you want that much then "show us"... Honestly i think too much damage has already been done, only way i see hillis staying here is if he is humbled... if at the end of the year he enters free agency and gets sub-par offers, then the browns offer may look more than fair...that's if they even keep it on the table. way to much bad publicity in this though..its a shame really, cause he could really close out a game if used with another back...we needed to use him like bettis was used, and he could have played a long time. We have worse problems than rb though, glad all i have to do is watch
Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!

You are delusional. Randy doesn't use the team as his cash cow. He's not a cheapskate. And Marvin Lewis?!? You want an Al Davis or Jerry Jones? They hold back talent-loaded teams year after year with their meddling. I can think of one person right off the top of my head that would be a much worse owner than Randy. Yeesh. I'm shocked you somehow forgot to mention the other caring owner in Washington. The offense sucks since Heckert, because of Holmgren, drafted Colt and he is coached by Shurmur, who was hired by H&H, and the one common denominator is Randy Lerner.

Agreed. Perhaps the biggest thing that bothers me in all this is this story Friday by Silver. It is a pretty well known fact that he is tight with Fujita, so it doesn't take too much of a leap of faith to determine how this story came to light. I'm really taken aback by the amount of unnattributed quotes and snarky behind the back comments. What is humerous to me is Fujita (I think) saying that he's tired of the beat reporters asking him all the time about Hillis' contract and situation. If you are tired of it, SAY SO TO THE REPORTERS ASKING YOU!!! Don't leak a story to your California buddy in the hopes of "snapping Hillis out of a funk". Whatever happened to the sanctity of the locker room?
And for Wallace to open his trap, if I'm not mistaken, his mouth got him into hot water last year. Acting like a petulant child seems to be his forte. I really can't stand him and don't like the fact he's even on this team.
In regards to how this whole ball of wax has melted down so quickly, I wonder why Cribbs (who I still love as a player) gets a pass for his antics a few years ago, when he said he was done being a Brown and Hillis is villified for what he is doing this year. Hell, half of this crap isn't even directly attributable to him! It's his agent and the FO that have engaged in a very messy public battle. Has anyone stopped to think that that may be why Hillis is acting the way he is? His actions remind me of a child in the middle of a very bad divorce, confused about his role, hurt by the statements made and trying to show his importance in wanting to tie it all back together. I agree that he hasn't utilized his brief time in front of a microphone to the best of his ability this year, but that shouldn't erase all of the goodwill he endeared last year instantly either.
This whole thing started with Holmgren on Mike and Mike. The fact that they then went out and signed Moore and Gocong to inflated contracts considering their output had to weigh on Hillis. And I have never seen a coach handle things as poorly as Shurmer has to this point. He STILL can't say the right things and frame the conversation appropriately so as to avoid ambiguity and speculation, which Cleveland media deals in in spades! He feeds the flame each time he sits in front of a mic. He needs to learn the value of the words YES and NO. Deal in the definitive, Pat! Grey is going to get turned into whatever color these hacks in town feel unless he dictates the direction they can spin their stories with definitive responses.
While I know that Hillis has his detractors, there are just as many fans (although admittedly dwindling) that refuse to drop off. I believe that this whole thing has been a case of the media taking one nugget and building it up until it is it's own monster. Say what you will about where there's smoke... but Holmgren, Heckert, Shurmer and the media sure as hell provided a ton of kindling...

You heard it here 1st. Hillis gets healthy and racks up 700 yards during the last six games of the season and we resign him before free agency
I hope you are right. We CANNOT lose this guy. We've seen what he can do.

Yeah, but when his own teammates grow tired of his crap and hold a players invention..............the dude is a DOPE. Seriously.......how many times in all our years of watching football have we ever seen players pull something like this on one of their own?
I don't know because I would imagine it is typical for this stuff to be handled behind closed doors and stay there... whoever let this go to the media is far worse of a teammate than Hillis.

Maybe he just got caught up in his instant celebrity.. who knows, you act like he is going to be Ocho Cinco for the rest of his life. I've heard him talk about how humbling this has been for him, I believe when he gets over his injury he will be able to come back and contribute on the 4 different running plays we have in our playbook.

Cya Hillis. It's been real. Maybe it's time to grow up and be a man.....
Good point, let's send packing one of the 2 or 3 guys we have on offense that has proven he can at least play at this level. People call him a one year wonder.. well that's one more good year than 90% of our offensive players.

On the CBS broadcast, they characterized the meeting as more of a regularly scheduled leadership meeting, of which Hillis is a part. According to what the announcers said they had been told by players, they just wanted to talk to Hillis about how he was doing, and support him.
Who knows? That's a totally different story than some of the local press are telling. Normally the locals get this kind of stuff right though. I hope not. I like Hillis, and would loive to see him crushing LBs and DBs in a browns uniform for years to come.

I couldn't agree more with your statement.
My question is if this was supposed to be a quote, unquote "Leadership meeting" as they are calling it now.
Why is Wallace involved?
Is he a team leader? Because that would be news in itself.

Droughns and Hillis are pretty much the same guy in terms of what they gave us.

LMAO!!!! Off all the self professed experts, you are truly in a league of your own. If you think winning in this league (or for that matter in this division) without true talent then you need to start following another sport.
I CANNOT believe people are okay with him leaving the team. Where were you last season? Have you not seen how he dished out the punishment that our team has been facing since we've been back??? Heck, even his own teammates have spoken about how important he is.

I still support Hillis, but he needs to be healthy. Media piling on and anyone speaking out of turn is not helping. We have paid more for less than Hillis gives us. But we should prudently pursue his replacement because we must.

Alex Mack retweeted the Silver story. Hard to say that Silver got the story wrong if one of the Browns players in the story was willing to send it out to the masses.
*obligitory mention that 'if it was Alex Mack' in the tweet though he has confirmed it and mentions it during interviews (to add followers)

i'm still holding out hope that Hillis re-signs and gets back to his skull-cracking, high-jumping, pass-catching ways.
our offense sure looks better when he's healthy and in it.
