Kudos to Browns fans for turning this thread from poop into pure comedy gold. I'm a young fan (so I never got to see the glory years), and I'd be lying if I said I never thought about switching my allegiance. The problem is (and yes, it's a problem) I don't think I can root for any other team (just can't do it). Plus, I'm around bandwagon San Diego fans all the time, and I throw up a little in my mouth thinking I would be like them. It's painful to watch my Browns look so pathetic every Sunday, and it's painful talking with football fans from other teams, but I guess that's just the hand that I've been dealt. Woe is me... I do, however, respect the Ravens. San Diego is infested with bandwagon Steelers fans (speaking of me vomitting), so the Ravens have a relatively small following out here (not as obnoxious). I respect the Ravens because they used to be (and should be) my Browns. They have a winning organization, top to bottom. Their janitor probably goes into work knowing he's gonna own those floors and bathrooms all day. When I want to see what good football looks like, I can watch a Ravens game and hope someday my Brownies can look like that. I'd never be able to root for them, though. I can just be envious.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I would rather not watch NFL football than root for another team. With that said I'm 30 years into this thing, why quit now?
I also don't really hate the Ravens other than the fact that they're a divison team. The whole "Old Browns" thing is done to me. I respect the hell out of how they run their team, I think Ozzie is doing a tremendous job, they do nothing but draft quality players, and I'm happy that a former Brown great is doing an awesome job.
Plus I'm their biggest fan when they play the Steelers because I hate the Steelers and their fans.

Like some, I'm a younger guy, only 25, October 31st 1999, I was only 13, and I watched the ball leave Couch's hand and fall into Kevin Johnson's...
It is the day that will live in my mind as knowing what I would be doing for the rest of my life... Rooting for the Cleveland Browns..
There's no turning back.

Can we get an annual DT pool going for things like date of the first person to renounce fandom, date of the first person to call for coach firings, etc.?

Also, if we do have some success these people will be right back on the bandwagon saying how they were with the team since way back.

All I'm going to say is, from my first memories of football, I was a Browns fan. Perhaps 5 yrs. old? I don't know the exact age - but Sunday afternoons during football season meant the Browns were on.
I'm now 43. Nothing has changed. (I even got 2 "extended family" Christmases changed from Sunday afternoon to a Saturday afternoon)
Next year will be the same - as will every year God gives me on this earth.

That's awesome to see younger guys like your self rooting for this team...I'm 50 and have been a fan since I knew what football was..
I didn't watch the game this past Sunday..Took my girls and grand daughter to break fest then fishing... ended up at Chucky Cheese...But I had my Browns gear on
It's hard right now because we want to win so bad...We expect so much...Saying next year and be patient is difficult...Some day the ship has to dock at a Stadium that has a roof, or really nice weather in February...

My first football memory is the 96 Packers/Patriots Superbowl, half of my family is from Wisconsin (where I was born) so there was alot of cheering going on...
After that, My memory skips directly to the 99 draft, getting a Couch jersey for Christmas, and the Hail Mary that hooked me forever...
The problem is...
I have two young children (son, 4, daughter, 5) and the idea of passing on the Browns to them seems almost like Child Abuse...

You saw the Packers when they got good again...They were bad for 25 years....So pass the Browns on to your children...They may do some cheering of their own.. here's a link... read the part from 68-91... web page

unlike many on here..I choose not to belittle or be get angry at this guy. He's frustated for a myrid of reasons. I applaud loyalty....but only in marriage, workplace and frienships. Sportsteams..its entertainment. just because he wants to support a franchise that actually has a plan to win each year and a capable front office that makes wise player personel decisions..doesn't make him horrible. I have a handful of friends who have PSL's for the Browns who have invested more into the Browns than the Browns have gave them back.

Don't forget the Steelers prior to the 70's. Although don't ask a lot of their fans about it since the NFL didn't matter before that time.

Nobody would be making fun of him if he didn't create a new thread announcing his leaving Browns fandom.

Sportsteams..its entertainment.
I've been known to say "Sports are the best reality TV there is"
For example, I watched the Chargers/Packers game and listened to the Ravens/Steelers game this passed week without really rooting for either team, and was thoroughly entertained by both contests, it was great drama.
But I am only a fan of the NFL as a whole, because I am a fan of a certain team. And from my POV, not having a specific team to root for, defeats the purpose all together...

In the grand scheme of FANDOM, it's the cardinal sin...
The only thing worse than it, is actually making a point to let everyone else know you're doing it...
Quote:
I have a handful of friends who have PSL's for the Browns who have invested more into the Browns than the Browns have gave them back.
And the moment that the Browns finally win something, They will be able to savor it completely, unlike Joe...
To continue on my points...
If the Indians win a WS, I will celebrate.. If the Cavs win an NBA Title, I will celebrate... If Michigan wins a National Championship, I will celebrate (and rub it in my OSU families faces)
But if the Browns win a Super Bowl... I probably won't be useful for at least 9 days...

Ahh...didn't bother listening to original or this one. OK. Seems kinda dumb anyway. If you want to curse the Browns out, do it like everyone else, yell at the TV (not a stadium and then posting it on YouTube).

I think he pretty much summed up the feelings of most Browns fans out there. We're frustrated and tired as hell of losing, but damn it, we'll see you on Sunday!

My first real memory of the Browns was the '94 playoff game (8 then). I just remember the excitement in the house, not any of the actual game. Then in '95 I started watchin with my dad every Sunday. I remember the move being announced, and getting upset, not because I had any attachment to the Browns at that point, but because I saw it as something I wouldn't get to do with my dad anymore.
Come back in '99, we had dish, so no major networks at the time. I would hook up and fiddle with the rabbit ears every Sunday to get in 27 out of Youngstown to watch the game. Since then, every Sunday I make as much of an effort to watch the Browns as possible (work permitting usually).
Through all the disappointment, there have been a significant memories for me; first win on the hail mary, Dawson's kick to beat Pittsburgh in '99, Run William Run, the playoff disappointment (still an exciting game), Cribbs when he was a threat every kickoff, DA catching lightening in a bottle, last 4 games of '09, and the Pats game last year. I will say unequivocally, I have NEVER considered changing teams.
I think all of our unwavering support of the ORANGE AND BROWN is a show of strong character, regardless of how we feel about the current or past regimes. Don't let the door hit ya, and if the Ravens do win another SB I hope you feel empty inside.

My first memory of the Browns was The Drive. Ya I know crazy.
On my 16th birthday, Jose Mesa blew a 9th inning lead in Game 7 of the world series.
I survived the last 12 years of the Browns sucking, watching a hometown hero turn his back on his own team and city, and watch an owner ship 2 cy young award winners out of town for a bunch of minor leaguers.
Safe to say, if I was going to jump ship, I should have done it by now.

Here's the thing -- if you're giving up on being a Browns fan, the next step probably shouldn't be posting on a Browns message board.
We're all frustrated ... not all of us feel the need to act out in a desperate need for attention.

We watched "the Drive" and "the Fumble" at my grandparents' house. That was a LONG hour drive home. I just remember sitting in the backseat listening to my Dad mutter obscenities in the front seat while my Mom just hoped none of us talked.
And yet, the very next year, we were camped in front of the TV to watch the Browns' games.
As others have said, I've stuck with them through that crap, why not stick with them now?

Here's the thing, and bear with me, because nowadays it sounds kind of ridiculous...
In 98-99 when I heard Cleveland was getting a team, I told myself that I was going to root for them, being from northern ohio, too far from Cincinatti to root for the Bengals (thank gawd)
So building up to that point, I was watching ESPN and the like, and they started playing the ESPN Classic episodes of The Drive and The Fumble...
I watched them, 12 years old... Without knowing how they ended...
I may have only been an infant when they happened, but part of me at that time felt like I had experienced them...

I was in college during the "fumble". Was actually at my brothers basement apartment. When Byner went in the endzone, I literally jumped so high I hit my head on the ceiling.............only to find out Byner didn't have the ball.
I distinctly remember watching the Kardiac Kids. I absolutely remember Cockroft not being allowed to kick the winning field goal.
I remember not watching football for 3 years - other than the super bowls, and maybe a few plays in the playoffs here and there.
The drive, the fumble, red right 88.............I guess I was lucky I got to watch those.........
You're either Brown and Orange - or you're not.
