defensive brainfart cost us Cinn ST brainfart cost us Oakland ST brainfart cost us Rams
We could easily be 6-3 with ZERO offense, QB playing like crap, our 1,2 and 3 running back out for pretty much all of the season. We have also had our #1 receiver and 2 best tightends out with concussions and other injuries. Then we have our OL injuries as icing on the cake.
Frankly I think Shurmur has done well under the circumstances. Giving the ball to Alex Smith was stupid but it didnt cost us the game. Cribbs fumble and Mack's mental meltdown cost us the game.

We really could (and maybe even should) have lost the Seahags game. An invisible block in the back negating a Hags TD on a kick return gave us that win.
A last minute TD gave us the win against the hapless Dolphins.
We could also be sitting here at 1-8.
Every team has their share of "what ifs" and "could have beens".
McCoy could have been picked on any of the 6 or 7 passes he has thrown directly at defenders this year. We could have lost a fumble here or there that could have further cost us in other games.
In the end, you generally are what your record says you are. We have played parts (at least) of 4 of our 9 games thus far against backup QBs. We are a team sitting at 3-6, having played a really weak schedule thus far. That's what we are. We have 3 wins, and they come against teams with an aggregate record of 5-23.
That really is what we are.

Just clicking Here is Bud Shaws take on blaming Shumur.. Quote:
On this day, the Cleveland Browns' failure to finish off a win isn't Pat Shurmur's fault: Bud Shaw
By Bud Shaw, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Pat Shurmur played to his strength.
That Phil Dawson is still the strength after nine weeks of the head coach teaching West Coast Offense 101 is a concern for another day.
Shurmur did nothing wrong in playing for a field goal at the end of a numbing 13-12 loss to the Rams. The clock and the circumstances made it more accurate to say he played for the win. After losing four of five, you still wanted him to throw caution to the swirling lakefront wind?
These weren't Red Right 88 stakes for sure. Nevertheless, safe was the right bet.
On a day when Shurmur (relatively speaking) unveiled his inner Copperfield with imagination bordering on sleight of hand, trying to drop the curtain on a victory was understandable. It's not on him that when the Browns sawed themselves completely in half at the end, it wasn't a trick.
"We were in a position to score points," Shurmur said. "Our defense was playing extremely well and I wanted to make sure that we were going to get an opportunity to kick a field goal and go ahead."
Someday the Browns offense will boast matchup edges in the secondary. Our descendants will no doubt enjoy it. Until then, when "trickeration" is the best means possible, you can't find fault with playing for a field goal late. Not Sunday, anyway.
"We had a Pro Bowl snapper [snapping] to Phil, a Pro Bowl-caliber kicker," Josh Cribbs said.
Cribbs was so sure of the outcome he didn't watch the attempt. What he missed was what looked like movement on the offensive left side of the ball, then the snap deflecting off Alex Mack's leg, then a near-save by holder Brad Maynard. Dawson's steps were fatally off by then, though, and he pulled it left.
The assembly line of angst in the stadium local comedian Mike Polk Jr. has popularized as the "Factory of Sadness" produced another day of depression.
"You scratch your head and wonder where all this bad luck is coming from," Colt McCoy said.
It's more than that. He must know that. Bad offense has been far more culpable. No Peyton Hillis. No Montario Hardesty. No organizational effort to improve the weapons around McCoy since last season, save drafting converted running back Greg Little.
Scant if any imagination. Shurmur has stood convicted of not coaching with any urgency, of the season being about putting in a system, of letting his team break the huddle while trailing late in games as if it were headed for a root canal.
He did none of that Sunday. Still no no-huddle. But Josh Cribbs operated the Wildcat. Seneca Wallace even caught a McCoy pass out of it. McCoy threw deep. Little took a direct handoff on one play, Cribbs on another. Tight end Alex Smith did, too (more on that later).
The Browns threw on 11 of 25 first downs, including the McCoy-to-Wallace pass that covered 21 yards. The Wildcat is a gimmick. Keeping defenses off balance is better football.
Shurmur hinted his insider knowledge of the Rams told him some of the misdirection would work against the St. Louis defense, as opposed to working against the past few opponents. Still, like it or not, he must accept that this is the kind of imagination the Browns need to show. They've been far too predictable.
One caveat. Draw the line at Smith taking a handoff as the fullback ever again with the game on the line.
The Browns were clearly playing to kill more clock and set up Dawson for his fifth field goal. Owen Marecic, who carried two plays earlier, got dinged. Smith was in for him. That should've changed the play, but it didn't. The Browns got lucky when Cribbs covered Smith's fumble.
Shurmur turned crimson and pounded the podium when asked what he was thinking calling a handoff to a player who couldn't remember ever taking a direct exchange from the quarterback. Ever. At any level.
"We tried to hand him the football and he dropped it," Shurmur said. "That's the thinking."
Maybe he didn't know Smith was in for Marecic? That play raised the risk level when the drive Shurmur was commandeering from the sideline was obviously all about lowering it and betting on his defense against a challenged Rams' offense.
The handoff to Smith is not why the Browns lost. In fact, after another Twilight Zone ending to go with all the others since 1999, let's just assume voodoo is the cause until proven otherwise.

Like I said ..... when it all washes out, you are what your record says you are.
We are a team in the midst of a transition with major holes in some crucial spots. We have an inexperienced head coach who is trying to do it all himself .... and no coach can do that and be successful.
We are a 3-6 team ...... probably on our way to 4-12. The play on the field does not lie. We are more than half way into the season, with the hardest part of the schedule yet to be played. We will be lucky to win more than 1 of our remaining games.
We'll see if we're lucky or not. With us playing the Ravens and Steelers twice each in the final 5 weeks, and those games appearing right now to be meaningful games, we should expect the very best effort from both teams.

Shurmur needs to hire a play caller/offensive coordinator this offseason.
I am tired of firing coaches all the time. We need to let him grow into the job, but he needs help so that he can coach the team ..... not just call plays.
I agree, he can still instill his philosophy in an OC and have the freedom to over see the rest of the team. Like spending more time with Colt coaching him up on the sidelines as well as with others. This is not as important with a head Coach who has an established veteran team ... Ie; GB, NO.
His play calling at the end of the game is a topic of controversy, because it went against conventional wisdom, but some times that works (and he is a genius) and other times it does not. And he should be fired? If we would have went with conventional wisdom there, then maybe we score a TD and then maybe we don't or maybe we throw an interception.
I think he went with the safer option in feeling we already had an automatic FG (It's hard to speculate otherwise the way Dawson was kicking) and he wanted to milk the clock down some by running the ball, honestly I don't know and I have yet to see his press conference. I will agree that it was an inopportune time to hand the ball off to Smith, but I have to say I like the thought process, because sometimes you out smart yourself on those type of plays, but other time you can strike gold, because it's the last thing a defense expects, so he gets points for imagination on that play and also many more in the game, like the pass to Wallace ... That play worked out pretty well, but it could have also been a disaster, who knows? The important thing to take away from this game imo, is that Shurmur showed some flexibility to work out side of the box and by using the strength of his players outside of our basic offensive philosophy and I can't fault him for doing that ... After all isn't that what most of his criticism has been about?

Holmgren did not fire Mangini out of respect for a coach who only had 1 year to put things together. He mentioned many times how it was unfair to fire a HC after only 1 season.
Holmgren hand-picked Shurmur for this team. He is a 1st time HC under strange circumstances w/ the lockout.
So, why bother with a 'fire Shurmur' thread? There is absolutely no chance of it happening for many, many reasons. How about we just complain about the things that Shurmur should be held accountable on and point out where he needs to improve. We can even point out a good thing every now and then just to mix things up and keep people off-balance.

Made my first game this season ( me bad ) ... Sat down in sec 131 with a real mix of folks ( ) .. Every time we got in scoring position the whole area would sigh and call the next play .. Predictable isn't even close ! .. We saw Moore run in , and everyone called Moore in the coroner .. Bottom line .. The Coach was playing Dawson all the way / the whole game ... The house was about half full and most of them really didn't want to stay by the third quarter .. As bad as it was on TV .. 10 TIMES worse at the game ..

If you're not throwing the ball into the end zone when you need points because you're afraid you might throw a pick then you might as well just fold up your tent and call it a day.
You said you liked the thought process to hand off to Alex Smith because the opponent wouldn't expect it? Small problem...that play was for Marecic but Shurmur didn't know that Marecic wasn't in the field.
The double-reverse pass to Wallace? It was supposed to go to Little but he was covered.

firing folks is not going to fix this mess...Lerner messed up BIG this time....and to be honest...i don't think there is an easy way out of this....if we can folks...who we going to hire? its not like there is anyone else out there really....Holmgren and Co have job security..because there is no one else who wants the job...the fact we are stuck with Shurmur tells us this....
i didn't even watch yesterdays games...i am not watching anymore games this year....Im as big of a Browns fan as anyone...but these cuts(losing) has become just too painful....you must understand I am a very competitive person by nature...losing is not in my vocabulary...im not cut from that cloth...
im not going to punish myself watching this garbage anymore...i am a Browns fan, I always will be...a part of my heart will always be with this team every sunday....always....but i just can't stomach watching this any longer...
I see no pride on this team, i see no heart, i see no fire....thats what sets a winner apart from a loser...its more then just drafting, its more then just one player...its about breeding a culture of pride and dignity....
I just can't watch this anymore...im just tapped out....I have stood by this team since i was a kid, I stood by this team since they came back in 99....but we have only had 1 season that was worth cheering for(playoff year)
I love this team so much i just can't bring myself to watch it anymore...i never thought that would happen, but it has...Im taking a break from the Browns.
When this team actaully begins to resemble something that looks look a professional team, then i'll watch again...im not asking for much...im just asking for the team to look like it actually belongs on the same field with other teams...thats not asking much....until they can do that...im not interested in watching...

The point being that sometimes those plays workout and other times they do not. Those who called for better creativity with our offense ... Well we got our wish yesterday only to suffer the same end results, but to me that's not as important as making progress, even if it was baby steps.
As far as the last drive went ... I think that we where trying to protect what was all most assuredly an automatic lead changing FG and also trying to milk the clock. (It's also a possibility albeit a small one that we could hsve scored a TD on the ground ... It happens)
It was a freakish play that threw a wrench into the works or else we make that FG and most likely come away with the win and questioning the last series of play calls would have been a moot point and thus the point I'm trying to make here.

Yes, we could be anywhere from 1-8 to 6-3 ... but none of that hides the fact that we are a horrible team right now. Absolutely embarrassing to watch.
I see us as a lot closer to that hypothetical 1-8. Of our three wins, if we played those three teams again, right now, we could still beat Indy. Could. Miami would trounce us and Seattle beats us. Of those teams who beat us this year .... I don't see us coming out on top on a rematch.
Out offense stinks. We may not have a lot of weapons, but I don't see where our gameplan uses what we have effectively. And our HC/OC has an OC background.
Sure, we've still been in a lot of games in the 2nd half, but thank the D for that. They are playing well over their heads. Think how bad this would be with some of the defense we've had before.
IMHO, I do not see us getting another win this season. We still have some "bad" teams on our schedule. But not as bad as we are. Sure, we'll hang in there a few times, and I think we will give Baltimore a scare, but any win we rack up beyond the impressive ones we've already secured will be a bonus in my book.
I see us picking second in this upcoming draft ....

I don't see us picking #2. Miami has a much tougher schedule and the tiebreak with us. Also, I could see that game against Pit on New Year's being played against their second string. Still picking top 5 should net us a good WR or OL.

It'd actually go to weaker strength of schedule- and despite being too lazy to look ours up concretely- there's no way MIA's SOS is lower than ours, right? This year's divisional matchups forms the kind of schedule you look at, make a mess in your pants, and say "I'll take that one."

The tie break is SOS, head to head has nothing to do with it.

My mistake, but that may even be worse for us as our SOS is going to rise a ton after we play the back end of our schedule.

I understand that Browns fans are upset and they should be. We deserve a good team. We deserve to have a team that is Watchable.
I will say though that the moment they made the decision to fire Mangini and switch to the WCO and a 4-3 defense they were hitting the reset button. They didn't say they were doing that (and that is why many fans are upset) but that is what they are doing.
I think Shurmur is over his head. IDK if hiring an OC is going to change anything. I am upset they didn't go for an established HC even if they would of got one as a favor instead of one that truly wanted the job. But Shurmur is going to get his chance and it will be more than one year I can promise you that. (Don't shoot the messenger)
They didn't go after any real Free Agents because they knew we were not going to compete and they are still building through the draft.
Over the last two drafts we have 8 starters out of 22 players on the field and I didn't include Hardesty or Marecic in that. Now some will argue that Colt isn't good and Pinkston shouldn't be starting but they appear to be drafting better than the previous regimes. Which is the reason this franchise has been bad for so long, our terrible draft record.
We have a few pieces that fit with those 8 like Watson, Thomas & Mack. You could also add DQ and Rubin in there as well. So that is 13 of your 22 starters on O and D. I understand that some of those positions may/will be upgraded but lets be real here, no team has a probowler at every position.
All in all if in 3 years we are still terrible and Randy Lerner decides he wants to fire Holmgren and Heckertt then I hope the next group he brings in shares the same philosophy with the WCO and 4-3 defense. At the very least I hope that Homgren's legacy here is that he installed that identity and we run the same type of system (albeit successfully) in 2030. This franchise needs to stick to a philosophy/identity. Change the coaches, management is one thing changing philosophy every few years will keep us where we have been.
As always JMHO!

After watching that debacle at the end of today's game (the Rams game), where Shurmur played for a FG from inside the 10 yard line with over 2 minutes left in the game and where the FG would have only given us a 2 point lead, I think it is finally time to make the call and fire Shurmur. His playcalling has been terrible all season and even with some decent calls early in this game, he blew it on 2 of our approaches to the redzone. The idea of a HC/OC rolled into one was bad from the start, but it is apparent that this guy is in way over his head on both accounts. Fire him now.
just clicking...
Not another "one" ?
Another Browns fan that does not understand everything that comes with "rebuilding" the Browns.
We have a first time HC who is learning on the job and he is going to make mistakes and he made several in the final minutes of yesterday's game, imo...BUT...
....had Shurmur been aggressive and called for pass plays into the end zone, which resulted in an interception....what would you same fans be saying about that?...anyone remember RedRight88?
Shurmur was attempting to bleed the clock and force the Rams to call their timeouts. I understand the strategy and it is hard to disagree with it, had the Browns run the ball in for a TD or made the field goal.
But who knew that Alex Mack would step into the path of the snap, causing the ball to roll back to the holder, which destroyed the timing and leading to the missed field goal?
.....which one of you complaining about Shurmur, knew Mack was going to step into the path of the snap?
Had the Browns made that routine field goal and won the game, few would be complaining about Shurmur calling 3 running plays.
Hindsight is 20/20...woulda, coulda, shoulda.
The coaching staff and the players are working hard and striving to get better every game. There will be mistakes made and some may be costly.
Sometimes, the best lessons are those that are learned the hard way and I'm sure that Shurmur is beating himself up and second guessing the way he handled the end of the game.
Hopefully, Shurmur and Alex Mack will learn from their mistakes so they are not repeated in the future.
Shurmur has my full support...

Well after 24 hrs to calm down I still wish he had taken a few shots at the endzone. When we got to the 9 was telling my wife this is game we put it in the end zone go for the 2pt conversion and worst case we see OT. I was more scared of them just marching right down the field on us and then they kick the game winning FG with no time on the clock. When Smith fumbled I about overturned my kitchen table screaming what are you doing!? Had we not gotten that ball back Shurmur would still be questioned about not going for the throat. If McCoy tossed a pick people would be saying what the hell is McCoy doing, I think more then what was Shurmur thinking trying to win the game with a TD instead of sitting on the ball and kicking a game leading FG of less then 3 pts anyway. Finally the real bad of all this is that in todays paper Dawson said he thought someone on the Rams team moved and that caused our linemen to move early which was why Macks leg was in the way in the first place. He said "I was screaming at the official," He said. "I said, 'It's either defense in the neutral zone or false start. It can't be nothing.' He said, 'We have a guy watching. I said, "Apparently not very well.' " So the one time the refs miss a foul on us it costs us.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

I think I heard on the radio today we are in the 11th slot of course its way to early to project that out but Im thinking we wont move much lower seeing as there are some really bad teams this year.

Its too bad we didn't stick with our former coach who just happened to put a lot of effort into instilling discipline, eliminating mental lapses, and the importance of special teams......
I am 100% certain that we would be contending within the division if the big ego didn't decide to go in a different direction from last year.
Stupid move on Holmgren part.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

Saint...now that the Browns are out of the playoff picture... ...some of our "fans" fail to see the "BIG PICTURE".
The rest of this season means absolutely "NOTHING"...when it comes to where the Browns will finish in the division...likely last place and out of the playoffs.
The rest of the season will be about gaining valuable experience for some of our younger players (and coaches) and identifying those players who are more concerned about themselves and not the team...we don't need players on the team that tank it and quit...simply going through the motions.
Players and coaches are going to make mistakes, that is a given. But going into the teeth of the division schedule, we are going to find out which of the players will be willing to accept the challenge to their manhood as a football players.
The Browns don't need quitters on the team and IMO, that goes for those who like to call themselves "BROWNS FANS", too.
We Browns Fans...we are a "tough breed"...we don't quit in the face of disappointment. We don't call for the firing of our first year head coach..we don't call for the firing of the best team President the Browns have had, since returning in 99.
jmho, but I believe THE TOUGHEST Browns Fans are the "older", more "mature" fans who have experienced "disappointments" for decades yet continue to support the team.
Along with the toughness of the older Browns fan comes "wisdom"...and the ability to look beyond the game we just played or the game we will be playing this week.
Those fans who don't have the stomach or wisdom to see the big picture and want to fire everyone who makes a mistake...FEEL FREE TO GET OFF THE BROWNS BUS....
...honestly, many of you sound like spoiled brats, imo.
Saint is right...along with losing comes that higher draft pick. Probably the best benefit to come from losing other than the players and coaches gaining valuable experience in this, the first year under Head Coach, Shurmur.
Either you are on the Browns Bus or Off...your choice !

I was actually going to agree with you until you started talking about being on the bus.
Take that stuff out, and I agree.

Actually, we are one of the really bad teams this year. Most of the teams below us are starting to show signs of life. We are not. Honestly, I think we stay at 3 wins. I do not know who is left on our schedule that we can beat. Jax is a possibility, but I don't even see us at 50-50 winning that one. With our "strength" of schedule, we should pick ahead of anyone who has the same record as us. Unless they come from the NFC West who all play each other as well as ... us.
Outside of Indy, who else should finish below us? There are four 2-win teams (Miami, Minnesota, Carolina and St. Louis). Can I say none of them will win another game this year? I don't see that happening.
There are several other 3-win teams. Jacksonville, Philly, Washington, Seattle and Arizona. I do not see any of them going 0 for the remainder of the season, though Washington is a possibility.
I predicted earlier this thread we will draft second. I still think so.

Not sure about dismissal but as the experienced elder statesman it would be perfectly acceptable for Holmgren to have a serious talk with the HC.

firing folks is not going to fix this mess...Lerner messed up BIG this time....and to be honest...i don't think there is an easy way out of this....if we can folks...who we going to hire? its not like there is anyone else out there really....Holmgren and Co have job security..because there is no one else who wants the job...the fact we are stuck with Shurmur tells us this....
i didn't even watch yesterdays games...i am not watching anymore games this year....Im as big of a Browns fan as anyone...but these cuts(losing) has become just too painful....you must understand I am a very competitive person by nature...losing is not in my vocabulary...im not cut from that cloth...
im not going to punish myself watching this garbage anymore...i am a Browns fan, I always will be...a part of my heart will always be with this team every sunday....always....but i just can't stomach watching this any longer...
When this team actaully begins to resemble something that looks look a professional team, then i'll watch again...im not asking for much...im just asking for the team to look like it actually belongs on the same field with other teams...thats not asking much....until they can do that...im not interested in watching...
against my better judgement I paid for Sunday Ticket. I no longer watch the browns live as i cannot bear to watch such sloppiness. I already know the score and watch it like one does in an autopsy. Shurmer's play calling was atrocious when the game was on the line..a run by a TE who never runs and mericic...does not try for a TD and plays for the "safe" field goal which is botched. I thought the Cinci game where the entire staff sat on their collective hands and never called a TO and let Cinci have a gift TD was sloppy...yet we find new and novel ways to really stink. Just another on the job hire of a never been head Coach who is so raw. He never consults with his young QB on the sidelines. I don't think any coach with experience wanted any part of Holmgren so we grab bagged this guy.
I can barely stand the autopsy let alone watching a murder scene in slow motion. happy with the Mangini firing? at least we could block and tackle last year. This team is beyond the pale of sloppy.

Ok, back to football... I was ok with Shurmur in preseason, I was happy with what he appeared to do in a limited amount of time.... then in the first few games I saw flashes of offense, we would go dormant for periods of time but we did have some decent drives and I felt all we needed was some consistency and to grow into the offense, then lately most of those flashes are gone, we seem to work extremely hard to get from our 30 to their 30 so we can kick a FG but it seems like we never really get into any kind of a rhythm.. get the defense on its heels... etc.
This last game we did some trickeration, we seemed to have a bit of a flow at some points but we still went into a shell when we got into scoring position and settled for FGs..
I'm not for firing him this year, I want to get him more pieces and see what he does next year, but if we have another 4 or 5 no touchdowns streak next year I'm going to start having doubts... This is the NFL, even without elite talent, you should still be able to stick the ball in the endzone once in a while.
