Well, what kind of cap hit would we have taken if we had just outright released Droughns?
Trading and releasing are exactly the same in terms of cap hits. There is no difference. In both cases we are choosing to not have a player we have under contract on the team any longer.
As for the hit we're taking by trading versus had we kept him for this year? Damn near the same as we are taking by trading him. The remainder of the unaccounted for signing bonus accellerates onto this year, so the net savings for this year is in the ballpark of only $600k. Chump Change.
The impact on next year is much more significant though.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

How so? If we had simply cut him, would we have taken a hit next year? I'm not salary cap guru, so I'm unfamiliar with it.

Gotcha, thanks guys. I just need to start reading all the posts instead of skimming, I guess. And, hey, maybe this just helps with muddying the waters for the people directly behind us in the draft?

Not negative impact, positive impact as in we hav emuch more money freed up by this move next year versus this year. We save next to nothing this year.

The Giants re-signed Carter on March 24, 2006. ESPN. com reported that the contract is for two years and worth $2 million. The deal included a $500,000 signing bonus and numerous incentives. http://www.fanball.com/football/playerProfile.cfm/pid.1107/Tim/Carter/his contract is up in 2007.

Thanks BpG
this is a very cheap, near minimum....if you substract the SB maybe even under 1mil for 2007
and the fact they re-signed him after 4 season with lots of injuries is a good sign...he must have some talent
