Childress - he was a bust as a HC, but could be a co-ordinator only guy. Would need to look in his history to see if it was him or Reid calling the plays.

One of MY GUYS that I listen to @ 3pm on 97.1 The Fan, here in C-Bus, is a huge Vikings fan. Just finished saying Browns should start drinking heavily at just the thought of Chilly coming to town.

I thought he was just being a bitter Viking fan, but he then said that the guy never called plays in Philly and then reminded us that he had to remove himself of playcalling duties in Minni because things got so bad . . . Grain of salt . . .

I also thought I remember farve calling Chilly out as a dumbass or something to that effect and having zero respect for his play calling.

Shurmur just had a press conference and said that they will hire an offensive coordinator and that, "I want to get the best guy I can and if he's outstanding at calling plays, hey I want to win games."

I didn't catch the Shurmur's presser...

hhhmmmm...looks like Shurmur is suddenly more flexible on the issue of calling plays...wonder who convinced him?

Shurmur is not running the franchise...Holmgren is.

Anyone thinking Holmgren was going to back down on the issue of Shurmur's play calling...well, you are obviously wrong.

I never said much about it during the season, but Shurmur's play calling was a lot of the problem with this offense. It had to be hard for Holmgren to watch, knowing Shurm was showing that he was not ready to take on both tasks, HC and OC.

BS...BS...And MORE BS...

I guarandamnteeu that Holmgren isn't shovin' ANYTHING down Shumers throat...Only u Drama Queens think so...

This is where u buttholes don't get it...Media included...

Again...Some of u guys make it waaaaaay more complicated than it is...It's why some have been calling (Cough Akron Cough) for Shurmer and Holmgrens head since week 3...

Yes Shurmur has proved such a wonderful hire. I Love how McCoy blossomed under his leadership and how the receivers proved they only needed the right system and H&H were correct sitting on their fat asses in free agency. I love how Shurmur kept defenses on their heels in the red zone and how potent he was and at any moment he could come up with a fantastic play called.
I love how tight and error free the team plays under this guy.
Yeh I endorse your reality(cough) and I believe we cannot find a puppet who will be OC without calling plays. sounds like in the last presser we (the front office) is already backpedaling from an INSISTENCE Shumur give up his redzone wizardry.

I am sure that will help the team draw top free agents who want to be marooned to offensive Siberia. So cheer your man Shurmy on Hoohah.

Didn't favre change the plays in the huddle without Chilly's permission? Where it would be like a 3rd and 1 and instead of feeding AP Favre would audible into a passing play?

I thought that happened a lot, and if so maybe that's why they didn't look so well.

Jon Gruden founded the Fired Football Coaches Association in Tampa. The group’s first convention could be held there soon.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Bucs have their eyes on multiple former NFL coaches, including former Browns, Chiefs, Redskins and Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, former Broncos, Bills, and Cowboys coach Wade Phillips, and former Vikings coach Brad Childress.

On Saturday, Peter King flagged another former NFL coach on the Bucs’ list: former Packers and Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman. (He’s on Mort’s list, too.)

Mort reports that Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer also is a candidate, even though he’s never been an NFL head coach.

For the Bucs, who tried three years ago to find the next big thing by promoting an assistant, it makes sense to consider hiring a guy who has coached an NFL team in the past. But how many coaches who have been fired once (or more) are ever highly successful in a future NFL gig? As pointed out last week on PFT Live, only five second-chance NFL coaches have won Super Bowls: Weeb Ewbank, Mike Shanahan, Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, and Tom Coughlin.

For the Bucs, however, the immediate challenge isn’t to win another Super Bowl. It’s to get the franchise back on track, and to cover some of those empty red seats with rear ends.

Link

I hope they hire Childress so we can't. Man Phillips too? What are they thinking? Marty Schottenheimer will be 69-years-old when the season starts. I guess they are looking for the opposite of Raheem Morris.

What about Gruden? Didn't he leave Oakland and win a super bowl with the Bucs? Somebody at PFT needs to do some fact checking.

So since 1998 that makes it 8 out of 14 superbowls won by head coaches in their second or third HC job (technically the Patriots is Belichicks 3rd HC job - Cle/NYJ/NE). Not sure what their point is.

I was thinking...we haven't heard anything about the Browns OC hunt....nothing.....the only thing we really heard was very early and that was a Brad Childress rumor....and I never saw a Mike Sherman rumor printed...but his name has been brought up.....by many.

But since we haven't heard a peep about any interviews...I have to wonder...Do you think Mike Sherman may be the primary target???? As they can't even talk to him until Green Bay is out of the Playoffs.....

It is just speculation and I could be looking too much into it...But I just have to wonder because of the lack of articles on what is supposed to be the biggest story for the Browns(the search for an OC) until the draft ramps up.

Sherman has been the coach at Texas A&M for 6 years; so he won't be tied up in any Packer problems.

He is, however, being considered for the HC position in Tampa.

well, they had a bye week, so technically we could have talked to him right after week17.

but, i have a feeling that we are waiting on them as well. and Clements is my first choice too.

Here's something I was thinking about last night in regards to an OC interview. Suppose the Browns interview Clements. Is it fair for him to ask about the Browns plans at QB, and what should the Browns answer? If they tell him their plans and he doesn't come here, then he has information while still a member of another team's staff. On the other hand, not telling him could influence him to not come here because of not knowing what he might have to deal with.

In addition, if the Browns like Flynn, do they mention that to Clements in hopes that could lure both of them here? If they do and he doesn't come, then that makes things interesting as well.

Again, just a few thoughts, but I'd be interested to see how some of you would approach the situation. (Although I know others will reply, too!! )

yes, if he comes here to interview, then we should spend a great deal of time grilling him on Flynn. if he goes somewhere else, then we still have that information.

that not only is fair, but prudent.

as far as plans, then I would say that we should tell him in a way that sounds like we are including him, but is still pretty generic. stuff like "we are interested in Flynn, but we are still evaluating RGIII and we need to do the full write-up before making a decision"

Other job openings could be affecting Browns’ search for offensive coordinator

By Nate Ulrich
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published: January 13, 2012 - 12:00 AM

Browns coach Pat Shurmur has been talking to offensive coordinator candidates, mostly by phone, though it’s unclear whether any formal interviews have taken place. “Candidates with options and deadlines” have been communicating with the organization, a league source said.

The Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking to hire a coach. Those teams are expected to be in the market for a new offensive coordinator along with the Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers.

Shurmur juggled the roles of a first-year coach and an offensive coordinator during the 2011 season. After the Browns finished with a record of 4-12, Shurmur vowed to hire an offensive coordinator.

“More than anything, I think what it will do is allow me to just step back and look down on some things in some areas that I may be able to contribute more,” Shurmur said Jan. 3 during his season-ending news conference. “I think that’s a key piece.

“Keep in mind this: As the head coach of this team, I want to direct a team that is winning games. I have a general philosophy of how that works. You tweak it to do what fits best based on those principles to win games. I think that’s just natural that you have an offensive coordinator.”

Shurmur said he’ll keep his list of candidates private, but he conceded a coach with experience in the West Coast offense would be an ideal fit.

Former Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress and former Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman would be logical candidates. Both have connections to the Browns and are represented by agent Bob LaMonte, whose clients include Shurmur, President Mike Holmgren and General Manager Tom Heckert. Childress and Sherman have reportedly interviewed for the Buccaneers’ coaching job.

Shurmur indicated that he would be willing to forfeit play-calling duties if the Browns are able to secure a candidate he deems worthy of those responsibilities.

“I think it’s important that I get the best coordinator I can for us,” Shurmur said. “I think [determining who calls the plays is] one of the details that will get worked out as we go through the process.”

Cowboys hire Henderson

The Dallas Cowboys made it official Thursday that they have hired Jerome Henderson as their defensive backs coach. Henderson spent the past three seasons filling the same role for the Browns.

Either that or they hire some guy nobody else wanted because he's the only guy who agreed to take the job and not call the plays.

Perhaps the OC they have targeted is working for a team still in the playoffs?

I don't know who that would be outside of someone on the Packers. Obviously, not Philbin for so many reasons. Maybe Tom Clements? He's the QB coach in GB... Don't know much about him..

J/C... I know it won't happen cuz he's elsewhere and he's not a West Coast guy but I miss Chud. Best OC we've had since the return in my opinion.

My hope is for Sherman at this point.

Maybe it's time to open Lerner's wallet to do whatever it takes to get the guy we want. After all, there's no salary cap on coaches!

that's fine, but if their target is Sherman, then I would suspect him to still look at that offer and turn it down knowing he'll get a HC job in college next offseason (or a NFL one as TB is showing - heck, he might get theirs now)

Wonder if Martz is being interviewed? I know the guy has been a failure everywhere he has been since the "Greatest Show on Turf" but The West coast is his thing. I think he has failed to adapt and that his QB's get beat like a rag doll because he doesn't balance the run. He also doesn't like to go deep. I remember last year I went through the Coaching trees looking at guys that have learned the system and teams being succesful with it. That's when I came up with Clements. It seemed like after that his name started getting thrown around. Not sure if they are looking at him, but he would be ideal instead of the retread. Martz needs to go back to the drawing board and get innovative again.

You cant control his answer but you can make him think!
I dont think Childress is HC material, maybe he doesnt either. Thats not a knock, just some guys are great at their respective jobs and dont transistion well to HC.

i went through recently as well. did you have any names to add from the list I compiled (just want to see if we can have a pretty good and comprehensive list going)

Quote:

ok, let's think about who we might hire. start with what teams run the WCO and look to see what guys have spent the majority of their career in WCO systems but are not incredibly old (I put my cutoff at early 50s).

Packers - Tom Clements QB coach is my favorite candidate.

Saints - Pete Carmichael (OC) coached for the Browns in 2000 + he doesn't call plays in NO; so we could conceivably offer that to him to get him. Aaron Kromer (OL) is an Ohio guy who has spent his career in the WCO. Joe Lombardi (QB-coach) has familial ties to a guy who isn't exactly pro-Browns when he writes. But, another Ohio tied guy who has been WCO his career.

Eagles - David Culley (WR), Tom Melvin (TE), Ted Williams (RB)

Vikings - we tried to hire Musgrave as OC last year and Minny got him. Only other WCO-career guy is George Stewart their WR-coach.

Bengals - James Urban (WR)

Buccaneers (just fired their staff) - Greg Olson (OC - no thanks)

other WCO-variants:

Falcons - no obvious candidates.
Jets: Callahan - OL Coach Jets - former HC/OC Raiders and HC Nebraska
Redskins (always considered Shanahan's system to be much different than standard WCO): no obvious candidates.
Texans (Shanny's system via Kubiak): John Benton (OL), Chick Harris (RB), Greg Knapp (QB)

From this list (and adding Chilly), I would order my favorites as below:

1. Clements
2. Carmichael - doubt we could pry him though
3. Callahan
4. George Stewart
5. Kromer
6. Benton
7. David Culley
8. Knapp

I agree with you and think Sherman would be our Jauron on the offensive side of the ball. He almost seems too perfect. Holmgren has to refresh his memory and nudge him a little for this to Happen. I would also ask Lerner to open up the Checkbook for Pete Carmichael Jr to get him out of N.O. If He wants to get out of the Shadows of Payton and create and be in control of his own High powered attack, I would give him the keys.

If Hue Jackson wasn't a nut he would be the perfect guy. I don't know if he's even hireable for any position in the league now though.

Also, Jim Zorn makes some sense. West coast guy, the Chiefs are hiring a new offensive staff, and if they aren't he could come because it's a promotion (he was there QB coach last year).

If the Eagles fire Juan Castillo (their defensive coordinator who used to be their offensive line coach) that might be a possibility.

What about someone like Edgar Bennett from the Packers, he has been coaching the Packers wide receivers this year.

Rick Neuheisel is a west coast guy, but after his disastrous final season at UCLA I don't know how anyone can hire him.

Al Saunders also might be available if the Raiders "gut" their team. He was their offensive coordinator under Hue Jackson (who called his own plays).

I still think the most likely scenario is that we promote Whipple to OC and hire a new QB coach.

Couple of quick comments,, I'm sure that money will not be any problem at all when it comes to getting the coaching talent around here. it never has been to my knowledge..

And, Wasn't Pete Carmichael Jr here for a year or two back in the day when we had his father here and I beleive Couch was our QB?

I mean, I guess if all things are right, he'd come back.. Dunno

But why would he? If he's going to be an OC, why would he leave the Big Easy, with Brees and that talent to come here to do the same job? More Money? I dunno.

Besides, I guess his name is being bantered around for a Head coaching job..

Philosophically looking at the situation I think the two most likely scenarios are:

1. Off the radar, young, very smart college WCO guy.
2. Later years, no further coaching aspirations WCO guy who is friends with multiple front office parties.

I rate the former at 70%, the latter 30%. Why?

Holmgren and Shurmer are able to mentor a younger coach, groom him exactly how they want to and Shurmer gets to maintain play calling until he gets his protege to a point where he feels comfortable letting that go. That type of person also would be a longer term guy 3+ years even if we have success.

Regarding the older candidate I see that type is a last stop before retirement guy. Shurmur is serious about being a true HC and dives into the other aspects of the job with voracity. This OC is a carbon copy of Jauron.

To me both scenarios have their advantages and disadvantages but I'd prefer option #2 right now if you forced me to choose.

He was here under Palmer Daman. Sometimes Coaches leave or take jobs to create their own legacy and to get out of Shadows. No matter what, everyone knows Payton built that offense and is the genious behind it. That is the only reason I could think of to want to leave.

He was here under Palmer Daman. Sometimes Coaches leave or take jobs to create their own legacy and to get out of Shadows. No matter what, everyone knows Payton built that offense and is the genious behind it. That is the only reason I could think of to want to leave.

Yeah,, that's it,, when Palmer was HC. and when Palmer got fired, didn't both father and son get relieved of duties as well/.
Again, he was fired here,,why come back. As for creating his own legacy, I'd rather have a HC job than any DC job.

Yeah, Payton is the guy who created that O.. But here, wouldn't it kinda be the same thing. Holmgren created a lot of the offense we want to run here right?

Guys get fired and go back to those cities all the time. It wasn't personal, just went in a different direction. I think he was TE coach or something. In the wonderful world of Coaching, these guys have big ego's that need to be coaxed. It will never be Carmichaels Offense in NO. He might want a HC job somewhere for sure, but if he doesn't get that I am sure he would like to create his own legacy and name. Maybe not. I know I would.

if I was TB, then Carmichael would have been my first choice for HC.

But why would he? If he's going to be an OC, why would he leave the Big Easy, with Brees and that talent to come here to do the same job? More Money? I dunno.

Besides, I guess his name is being bantered around for a Head coaching job.....

daman...concerning Pete Carmichael Jr, the OC with the Saints...the only position the Browns might be able to offer him would be Assistant Headcoach/Offensive coordinator.

Carmichael Jr has spent 5 yrs under Sean Payton, joining the Saints as their QB/Passing Game coach in 2006, when Payton took over as the Saints HC... Carmichael Jr took over as OC in 2009.

While his name might be mentioned in connection with some NFL headcoaching positions...the next logical move for Carmichael Jr would be HC at the college level.

Why college and not the pros? Why is college more logical

You can almost see it coming. "No candidates fit the bill at this time, I remain OC".

OR, and this is a giant OR, the guy they want is still in the playoffs.

...OR they're waiting to see if Manning gets paid by Indy and if they release him, they'll offer him the OC job with the Browns.

Well the way I look at it... We only have UP to go no matter who we get. I'm more interested in the scheme and playbook than I am who calls those plays. If the schemes are good and take advantage of the players skillsets ( whatever they are..) the plays will work if executed properly no matter who calls them.
