Seems that we're a bunch of crack addicts (Browns fans needing something on our team to give us a fix) that we're asking for our OC now! Although, I want the OC to have the power to call the plays without Shurmur overruling them.

there's 2 ways of thinking on this...We can wait and get the guy nobody wants..and be Shurmurs butt wipe.

or go get the guy that has the balls to tell Shurmur..this is the play Call it !

Just takes one, Petey! BUT. . . Gotta be the right one. Just about anybody giving their undivided attention as OC has to be an improvement over the last season's production IMO. But we need a battery of OC being aggressive, a skilled QB, and a dynamite receiver or two.

Well that will never happen. HC is always going to have the power to overrule his coordinators.

Yeah, especially at critical times in the game.

Come on Pat!

You are recieving two simultaneous calls, one from Fisher, one from Shurmur.Which one would you answer?

You are receiving job offers to play

John Skelton / Kevin Kolb, Tarvaris Jackson / Charlie Whitehurst, and Alex Smith six out of ten times per year.

OR

Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, and Andy Dalton six out of ten ... who do you pick?

Now that the Packers are out of the playoff scene, we may see movement in this area.

I believe Tom Clements with Green Bay was believed to be on the list.

We have a lot stacked against us in the hiring of a OC.

First, anybody any good is going to want to call their own plays.

Next, are seeking a WCO guy. That's fine, but it does limit the search. Most coaches want to install "their" O, not take over someone elses.

Also stacked against us is Shurmer. He was a marginally good OC in his day. Why would someone who thinks they are good want to go in, take over someones elses O, and have Shurmer as their boss? Seriously. I would look at the situation as a 2 year proposition before the staff gets canned, so why walk in to that??

My guess is we hire a first time OC. A guy willing to take a chance against stacked odds just to get the experience as a NFL OC. That builds the resume that gets you a HC gig somewhere....be it at the college level.

BC this is just a general statement not personal. Ummm Seriously? just going on the last two years I would think McCoy. I understand that he was learning a new system, and I mean Bradford but he was learning a system under McDaniels. The same system in which Brady did well under and oh..Cassel did well under and to a lesser extent McCoy last year under Dabol. And before you go and say the Rams were terrible..My point exactly. The Rams are picking ahead of us, Bradford looks like a Turd that some how keeps floating on top. It's funny in one thread I read some of you bashing McCoy for everything that is wrong but find no fault in a first overall pick that can't even play up to the level of McCoy or raise his team around him with no pieces. The perfect example right in front of your eyes of a first overall pick that the Rams didn't give up the farm for and they are drafting before us. I get a good chuckle every day in here. Maybe with those 6th and 7th round compensatory picks we can get some serious talent on this team! Bradford looks awful..have you watched him? The reason I go there is because of Fisher and his longevity. Look I like Luck and it is fine if you think we should trade for him because that is your opinion and when I say "you" it is is not directed at anyone in particular and is just general. But the crap that is thrown against the wall is not sticking..no matter how much you bash McCoy or say we can build a team with 6th and 7th round undrafted players or that he throws three yard passes..or whatever else you want to say. Bradford threw those same 3 and 4 yard passes in the same crappy offensive play calling. I hate it too and so did the fans in ST Louis. Guess what, Bradford got worse! Wait you mean no talent and learning a new system and no offseason and the first overall pick is drafting before us. He couldn't raise his team up and take them to the playoffs? I've said enough considering I think this is the hired coaches thread and sorry to the folks that came here to read updates on the coaching changes. I just came from another thread and then I see the Who would you rather have Bradford and McCoy from the same jokesters bashing McCoy for anything and everything without considering what a turd Bradford has been(understandbly) and that's with Stephen Jackson.

First off,I get niether money nor sex from any of you, therefore I won't take anything anyone says personel.Simply put, none of you mean anything to me.
Secondly,we were joking around. There willbe very few serious things happening between now and free agency. Now is the time to relax and throw a few jabs.Besides,we all root for a bad organization that for the most part does some really dumb things. If you can't joke about the Browns, you're not leading a happy, healthy life.

I hear you I was just saying it was a general statement which after reading the remarks below and from a previous thread from a couple posters it just seemed to not coincide. I can't believe you said we mean nothing to you! I guess I have to take you off the Christmas card list..

I was thinking the same thing. It doesn't seem like a fit. Didn't Nolan run some sort of hybrid defense when he was the defensive coordinator of the Ravens?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/page/MLK1-crennel/romeo-crennel-waste-second-chance

The idea of getting a second chance has long driven Romeo Crennel.

Getting back in the head-coaching chair he fought so long and hard to get into in the first place has fueled Crennel -- long respected as one of the NFL's best defensive minds -- since he was fired as the head coach in Cleveland in 2008 after four seasons.

Now that he has secured that second chance, Crennel said he hasn't had much time to reflect on the opportunity. He is too busy diving into his role as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Time spent congratulating himself on achieving his goal would be time wasted.

"I have 1,000 things to do to get this thing going," Crennel said. "This is an opportunity that I want to take advantage of … I am happy to get that second chance and there were times I didn't think it would happen."

Thus, when the door opened for Crennel, his determination to earn a second chance was evident. Crennel, who took a season off after being fired in Cleveland, became the Chiefs' defensive coordinator in 2010. When he was named the interim coach after the Chiefs fired Todd Haley with three games remaining this season, there was talk Crennel had a chance to become the permanent coach.

In Crennel's first game as the head coach, the Chiefs knocked off the Packers. It was Green Bay's only loss of the regular season. After losing in overtime at home to the Raiders in Week 16, the Chiefs won in Denver, in a game in which the Broncos could have clinched the division title outright with a win. Talk about taking advantage of an opportunity.

Kansas City conducted some other interviews after the season, but the inevitable happened Jan. 9 when Crennel officially got his second chance. At the age of 64, Crennel wasn't exactly counting on being a head coach again. He is now the second-oldest active head coach in the NFL behind the New York Giants' Tom Coughlin, who is 65.

Now that he has received his second chance, Crennel is determined to prove he isn't another name in the "good coordinator, bad head coach" bin.

Crennel, who was bypassed by six teams in 2003 after interviewing for head-coaching jobs when he was the Patriots' defensive coordinator, was 24-40 in Cleveland. The Browns did go 10-6 in 2007 under Crennel, but didn't make the playoffs.

"We had a 10-win season there and I knew we did some good things there," Crennel said. "I want to prove what we can do given this opportunity."

Crennel said he has already applied lessons learned in Cleveland in his short time in Kansas City. Crennel's first act as the interim coach was to replace quarterback Tyler Palko with Kyle Orton. Crennel struggled with a quarterback controversy in Cleveland between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. He was determined to avoid one this time.

Another reason Crennel is fueled for his second chance is he knows he is in a better situation. He acknowledged that the talented Chiefs' roster is better than the roster he inherited in Cleveland.

"This is a passionate group of players," Crennel said. "We want to develop a good team chemistry and we think we have a good nucleus here."

It starts with Crennel. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has said one of the reasons he hired Crennel is his competitive nature. Hunt was impressed when Crennel told him he wanted to be the Chiefs' head coach because he wanted to win the Super Bowl.

If the performance of the Chiefs' players under Crennel in the final three games of the season is any indication, they are ready to make a Super Bowl run under Crennel's guidance.

"I represent four players on the team," said Joe Linta, Crennel's agent. "All four of them are thrilled that Romeo got the job. His players love him."

Crennel is known for his genial way and his patience. Crennel is a steady hand, who is always there for an encouraging word. His four Super Bowl rings (one with the Giants and three with the Patriots) earned as an assistant coach doesn't hurt his credibility, either.

"I've been very fortune to be around some great players and great coaches like Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick," Crennel said. "I have had a long history and I wouldn't change anything as I prepare for this job."

There is a strong chance this will be Crennel's final job. It has been an incredible journey for the Lynchburg, Va., native who played offensive and defensive lineman at Western Kentucky. As he begins his second chance, Crennel reflected on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday this week. Crennel was a 20-year-old college student when King was killed.

"It was an emotional time." Crennel said. "As a minority, I was worried about the progress Dr. King made would be stopped because of his death, but the movement kept going and I'm sure he would be very proud of it. I'm pleased it kept going and I'm very appreciative of every chance I've gotten because of his hard work."

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Mike Nolan has no plans to switch the Atlanta Falcons to a 3-4 scheme in his first year as defensive coordinator.

During job discussions earlier this week with coach Mike Smith, Nolan agreed that the Falcons were better suited to stay with a 4-3, which deploys four linemen and three linebackers, instead of switching to his preferred 3-4.

As Nolan sees it, Atlanta doesn't need an overhaul to become an elite defense. He shared similar thoughts with Smith as the two watched film together and discussed philosophies.

"If I felt like it could easily be tweaked to go to something else because I felt it could be better, I would obviously suggest it," Nolan said during a teleconference on Wednesday. "But I think the track they've been on is a good one."

Nolan has spent 14 years as an NFL coordinator, using the 4-3 for seven years and the 3-4 for seven.

However, since New England and Pittsburgh were the only teams to run it 10 years ago, the 3-4 has grown in popularity as yards passing have continued to soar in recent years.

Today, half the league runs a 3-4. Nolan used it effectively during recent tenures in Miami and Denver, where he worked as coordinator the last three years, and in San Francisco, where he was head coach for four years beginning in 2005.

Steve Spagnuolo has agreed to become the next defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, according to a league source.

Spagnuolo became a coaching free agent when he was fired as head coach of the St. Louis Rams on Jan 2.

He was defensive coordinator for the New York Giants for two seasons (2007-08) before coaching the Rams for the last three seasons, compiling a 10-38 record. He has an extensive defensive background, coaching on that side of the ball for eight seasons in Philadelphia under esteemed coordinator Jim Johnson.

The position in New Orleans became available when former coordinator Gregg Williams agreed to take the same position on Jeff Fisher's staff with the Rams, according to league sources. That didn't come as a surprise to Saints head coach Sean Payton, who said Tuesday it was apparent before the season ended that Williams was likely to join Fisher.

I think the entire city of Philadelphia just crapped itself.

All you heard out of there was home "Spags is coming home!" or whatever...

The Miami Dolphins will name Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as their next head coach. Terms of a deal are unknown, but a source said a contract should be for no less than four years.

You'd have to think this was probably a package deal, but they can't discuss it just yet.

Maybe they can trade Matt Moore to the Redskins, and we can stay at 4 to get our QB.

Of course, I might give Moore another year if it were me. He went for 16 TDs and only 9 INT, was able to get the ball down the field, and turned that team around. They won half of his 12 starts after going winless with Chad Henne at the helm.

He had a decent year a couple of years ago in Carolina, then struggled the next. He then went to Miami and had a nice year. Hell, maybe Miami stays with him, and the Redskins grab Flynn. That would work too.

I'm not inclined to look for them, but news reports out of berea at the time indicated that RAC and Savage weren't on the same page the last year they were here together.

Reports say Colts are considering Tressel for head coach

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 21, 2012, 7:12 AM EST

We noted on Thursday that the Colts were considering keeping Jim Tressel on their coaching staff, but that reports suggested the former Ohio State coach would have a role other than head coach in Indianapolis.

But conflicting reports emerged on Friday, with multiple Indianapolis media outlets saying Tressel was, in fact, being considered for the vacant Colts head coaching position.

In fact, Channel 10 in Columbus reports that Tressel has already had 2 interviews for the head coaching position with the Colts owner Jim Irsay. Channel 8 in Indianapolis also reported that Tressel is in the mix. And the Indianapolis Star says multiple sources think Tressel is being considered.

Tressel was a highly successful head coach at Ohio State before being forced out for breaking NCAA rules, and he was a highly successful head coach at Youngstown State before that. But other than spending several months as a Colts consultant in 2011, he has no NFL experience at all. It would be a shock to see him as an NFL head coach less than a year after leaving Ohio State, but this feels like an offseason in Indianapolis that will be full of surprises.
