Experienced Coordinators on both sides of the ball might just be what we need to speed up the process and really establish the system.
That's what I definitely hope. Two good coordinators, who hopefully don't get offers to be HC's for other teams, and they help build successful units and get a system (on each side of the ball) put in place to develop players that can be successful.
Continuity is key. And I'd really like this to work with Shurmur and Heckert. Heckert finds guys Shurmur likes and Shurmur and Co. put in place a system that can become successful for years to come.

I really don't see either becoming a head Coach again, I think they both ran their course with that but I could be wrong. I think these are safe hires for a while if they want to be and they do the job they are capable of if you ask me. Kind of like a Lebaugh.

I agree but if that is the case it would be sweeter if they turned them down to stay in Cleveland..Imagine that story..

I'm not sure that would say anything good about them unless the offers were from a team like the Raiders with (formerly) a meddlesome owner, or a team with ownership in flux.

Dear Mr Childress, welcome. You have 5 players on offense, that's it. Ben Watson, TE Mohammad Massaquoi WR Josh Cribbs, WR, average, Kick returner, occasionaly great, special teams coverage great, passer above average, star play potential, off the charts Peyton Hillis, RB, free agent, 1600 all purpose yards in 2010. His determination and breaking tackles makes up for his lack of speed. Colt McCoy. QB, ( well, ya, , but he's the Qb ) You also have Greg Little, who made some strides, pretty nice ones actually, in his 1st year. WR. You have 2 more Journeyman tight ends, Evan Moore and Alex Smith, hit and miss. These are your players on offense who have produced in tough spots in games, and have continued for a short period of time, 1-2 years. Did I miss somebody?
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Roethlisberger could be making a power play for Fichtner
Posted by Mike Florio on January 28, 2012, 10:07 AM EST APSo why is Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger planning to park his rear end on the other side of Art Rooney’s desk and ask hard questions about the future of the offense?
It could be that Roethlisberger wants to ensure that quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner replaces Bruce Arians as the next offensive coordinator of the Steelers.
“When I get back, I’m going to go up to Mr. Rooney’s office and ask him what he wants from me, what he wants from this offense, because I think that’s a viable question for him,” Roethlisberger said recently. “He’s our owner and our boss, so I really would like to know kind of what he wants and where he sees our offense going because I’d like to tell him where I see us going.”
Roethlisberger surely sees the offense going toward Fichtner, who has joined Ben in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl and who has worked with the quarterback since 2007, when coach Mike Tomlin hired him. Fichtner previously ran a spread offense at Memphis, and Peter King explained last night on NBC SportsTalk that Fichtner was instrumental in helping Roethsliberger reintegrate into the roster after a four-game suspension to start the 2010 season.
And so the deeper question is whether Rooney wants to change the offense, or whether he simply wanted to change the coordinator. If it was a matter of dumping Bruce Arians and promoting Fichtner, the move probably would have happened by now.
Some may wonder why Rooney would possibly want to retreat to a more traditional Steelers attack — play great defense, run the ball extensively, and pass selectively not extensively. That would seem to be an unusual decision, given the presence of three very good young receivers: Mike Wallace, 2011 team MVP Antonio Brown, and Emmanuel Sanders.
But here’s the thing. Receivers who catch a lot of passes eventually command a lot of money. So if the Steelers continue to stretch the field, it could force them to stretch their wallet and/or salary cap in order to keep the pieces in place. Competent running backs, generally speaking, are much cheaper, more interchangeable, and far easier to find.
Rooney offered no concrete clues during a recent interview with Steelers Digest editor Bob Labriola when commenting on the fact that the two Super Bowl teams have quarterbacks who passed for more than 10,000 yards combined this season and defenses that landed near the bottom of the league.
“There’s no question the league is changing and the league’s always evolving,” Rooney said. “And there’s no doubt that I think we’ve seen quarterback play in general this year at maybe the highest level we’ve ever seen it, from a number of players. And so number one I think we’re fortunate to have a lot of very good quarterbacks in the league right now. Number two, the rules have changed to allow more prolific passers. And so I think that’s what we’re looking for for our quarterback, to be up there with the elite quarterbacks and to have that kind of production. And so I think you have to recognize all those facts.
“The other side of the coin is I think if you look at these playoffs so far, we’re not seeing teams scoring 30 and 40 points a game. And so I think you have to remember what playoff football is all about. Defense still is a big part of the game. And the games that we’ve seen for far in the playoffs, the defenses have made big plays. And as I say, the scoring has been fairly consistent with past playoffs. And so I think the game is evolving, but maybe not to the degree that some people would like to play it.”
Apart from the fact that the Giants scored 37 at Lambeau Field and the Pats scored 45 against the Broncos, who scored one point less than 30 against the Steelers, and the 49ers and Saints combined for 68 points and the Saints and Lions cominbed for 73 points, Rooney seems to be struggling to reconcile the recent explosion in offense with the time-honored notion that defense wins championships.
Of course, there’s also a chance that Rooney wants to continue to stretch the field, but that he doesn’t believe Fichtner is the right guy to orchestrate the attack. Either way, these decisions about the future of the Steelers offense seem to be coming not from the top of the coaching staff, but from the top of the organization. And it’ll be interesting to see whether Roethlisberger likes what he hears when he plops his caboose in Art Rooney’s office.

j/c Since the question came up in one of these threads, position coach to OC apparently IS considered a lateral move. The Arizona Cardinals have denied the Tampa Bay Buccaneers permission to speak with receivers coach John McNulty about the Bucs' offensive coordinator position, according to the Arizona Republic. McNulty, who has spent the last three seasons with Arizona, is still under contract and must receive permission from the team regarding any possible moves within the league. According to the Tucson Citizen, McNulty may appeal the decision. McNulty worked under new Bucs coach Greg Schiano for five seasons at Rutgers. He served first as the Scarlet Knights' receivers coach, then became co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2006. With McNulty calling plays, Rutgers' offense set school records for total offense, points scored and first downs. They became the first NCAA team with a 3,000-yard passer, 2,000-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers. McNulty has also coached in the NFL with the Cowboys and Jaguars. According to the Tucson newspaper, McNulty was at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii this weekend as a guest of Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Link

Yes, it is.
The ONLY move that is not a lateral move is non-Head Coach to Head Coach. EVERYTHING else is the same.
Assistant to the Assistant 3rd String Waterboy Coach is exactly the same as Defensive or Offensive Coordinator.

As the last team to get its head coach in place for 2012, Tampa Bay now has a tough task of assembling a staff of assistants after many of the best coaches available have already been hired elsewhere. But new Bucs head coach Greg Schiano may be reaching into his past to add an experienced coach to his staff.
Peter King reports in his Monday Morning Quarterback column that Schiano wants former Browns head coach Butch Davis on his staff, either as defensive coordinator or assistant head coach.
Schiano and Davis have been close since Schiano was the defensive coordinator and Davis was the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes in 1999 and 2000. Davis left that job to become head coach of the Browns, and Davis was also a well-respected defensive coach with the Cowboys in the 1990s. So he has significant NFL experience, even though, like Schiano, he has been a college head coach in recent years.
Davis was fired as head coach at North Carolina in July, in the wake of an NCAA investigation into academic misconduct and impermissible contacts between players and agents.

I didn't know that....doesn't seem right.
It may be the way it is, but I don't think anybody with half a brain would consider a receivers coach the same level as the OC.

Assistant Coach is Assistant Coach. The only promotions that require the team to allow an interview are to Head Coach ................. or maybe GM. (but I'm not sure on that one)

The one caveat being an assistant given the additional title of Assistant Head Coach. Each team can bestow that title to ONE coach only, and the team does NOT have to grant head coaching interviews for that coach.
Of course, that coach has to accept that title, so they do so knowing that if a head coaching position comes their way, they will have to get permission from their owner to take that interview.

I don't think anyone is questioning that this is the rule, I think they are questioninig the validity of the rule. Personally, I would not think OC and DC are the same as all other assistant coach positions.

I wouldn't think so either but that's the way it is. There is the Head Coach and then everybody else falls under Assistant Coaches.
It's odd to me too, but maybe it's to keep coaches from bouncing around too much because it would be hard to keep a staff together as coaches would be trying to "better" their position at the drop of a hat.

Think about that for a moment, that's absurd. (Not calling you absurd - like to make that clear - just if that's the line of thinking behind the rule) If some DB coach somewhere has a chance to be a DC - or if some RB coach somewhere has a chance to be an OC but is denied because they have to keep the staff together - that's madness.
Count me in the group that understands it's a rule, but it's a dumb rule. Head Coaches are head coaches; coordinators are a step below; every other position coach is a step below that.

And only in your rare cases (Harbaugh Special Teams, Raheem, DB to DC to HC) does a non OC/DC get even offered a HC job...

Steelers' LBs coach Butler to stick with staff Monday, January 30, 2012 By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Linebackers coach Keith Butler has decided against interviewing for the defensive coordinator position with the Indianapolis Colts and will remain with the Steelers, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has learned. Butler was scheduled to interview with new Colts Coach Chuck Pagano on Tuesday in Indianapolis, but he changed his mind after meeting today with team president Art Rooney II and Coach Mike Tomlin. Butler was told after the 2009 season he will be the team's defensive coordinator when Dick LeBeau retires -- a handshake agreement that was made when he turned down the Miami Dolphins offer to become their defensive coordinator. It is not known what was said at today's meeting, but Butler was likely given a stronger indication -- not to mention a hefty new contract -- about when he might replace LeBeau, who is 74. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/12030/1207042-100.stm******************* I think what can be safely assumed from this is that Butler was given a pretty clear exit strategy plan of Dick LeBeau. I don't know much about this Butler dude at all, but I was becoming prett giddy internally at the thought of the "heir-apparent" exiting that team leaving the Steelers scrambling for an OC and future DC. Oh well.

It would be hard for me to believe that this Butler guy would go to the Colts and not run the 3-4. That would mean Mathis and Freeney would both be gone. I will be interested in who they hire.

Limiting coach movement is the only reason I can think of for a rule like that.

IIRC, the purpose was to limit a team from being decimated by other teams hiring and "promoting" their staff to coordinator and/or "assistant head coach" positions.
Teams put a lot of time and effort (and money) into developing coaches as well as developing players. While most teams will not stand in the way of a guy being hired away to become a coordinator, a team with a coordinator retiring in a year, and who has established that the guy being discussed will be his successor, will probably not want to allow that guy to leave. I'm sure that there are other examples as well .... such as if one team wants to hire the DL coach for DC ... and another wants the LB coach ... while a 3rd wants the secondary coach .... and suddenly you have a decimated staff. Further, what happens if a team wants to interview an assistant coach a week before the season starts because of an unexpected opening? Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I see good reasons for such a rule.
Plus ...... while it may suck to a degree .... that coach is under contract to his current team .... and the team does assume all risk with coaches, even paying them if they are let go. I think that it's fair that they have some degree of control over assistants moving to be assistants elsewhere.

Raiders make Greg Knapp their new offensive coordinatorPosted by Evan Silva on January 31, 2012, 12:01 PM EST FOXSports.com’s Alex Marvez reported early Tuesday that the Raiders offered their offensive coordinator job to Texans quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp. According to NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, Knapp has accepted Oakland’s offer. Knapp, 48, is one of the NFL’s most running game-oriented offensive minds. As a coordinator in San Francisco (2001-2003), Atlanta (2004-2006), Oakland (2007-2008), and Seattle (2009), Knapp engineered seven top-five finishes in rushing attempts over a span of nine seasons. Knapp was only a quarterbacks coach in Houston, but the Texans did finish the 2011 regular season tied for the NFL lead in rushing attempts. The hire would seem to make the Raiders even more likely to use the franchise tag on free agent running back Michael Bush. Starter Darren McFadden is coming off a Lisfranc injury and has missed 19 games due to injury over the course of his first four NFL seasons. Todd Haley could be offensive coordinator candidate in Pittsburgh Posted by Josh Alper on January 31, 2012, 11:35 AM EST With Jim Caldwell landing in Baltimore, we know he won’t be the next Steelers offensive coordinator. One man who could wind up landing that job is former Chiefs head coach Todd Haley. Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports that Mike Tomlin has been reaching out around the league to gather information about Haley, who has been linked to jobs with the Cardinals and Jets this offseason without landing in either place. The Steelers parted ways with Bruce Arians, now running the Colts offense, earlier this month. Arians’ departure reportedly rankled quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who said that he wanted to meet with team president Art Rooney II to discuss where the offense was heading and, possibly, lobby for quarterback coach Randy Fichtner’s promotion. Part of the thought process behind Fichtner is that he would maintain the passing offense that the Steelers have been using for the last several years. Based on his experience running the Cardinals offense, Haley has no problem putting the ball in the air. His Chiefs teams were more run-focused, but the personnel demanded they move in that direction. The personnel in Pittsburgh and the general trends in the NFL would seem to make throwing the ball a priority, something that Haley could do while keeping Fichtner on the staff in the same role. Another plus for the tradition conscious Steelers is the fact that Haley’s father Dick was the team’s player personnel director from 1971-1990. He’s credited with playing a major role in assembling the rosters that won the first four Super Bowls in Steelers history.

Didn't the Rooney's fire Arians because he passed too much? And then they are going to go and hire Haley? I don't see the reasoning behind that.

I think it actually makes sense. He's shown a willingness to go run-heavy or pass-heavy depending on the circumstances. So, Tomlin can hire him and they can go run-heavy, then when that doesn't work (because they have put their personnel around a pass attack), they can switch to pass-heavy mid-stream if necessary.

Todd Haley interviews with SteelersPosted by Mike Florio on January 31, 2012, 11:32 PM EST Apparently, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin learned enough about Todd Haley while doing homework on the former Chiefs coach to decide to learn even more about him during a face-to-face meeting. The Steelers announced on the team’s official website that Tomlin interviewed Haley on Tuesday at the practice facility in Pittsburgh. There’s some scuttlebutt in media circles that Tomlin and the Steelers are considering Haley as a courtesy, given that his father played for the Steelers in the 1960s and thereafter worked in the team’s front office. Todd Haley once served as a Steelers ball boy. Even if the Steelers aren’t interested in hiring Haley, interviewing him — and declaring that they have done so via the team’s website — could help him generate interest elsewhere. Haley’s name has been mentioned in connection with the Jets and the Cardinals. Though his contract with Kansas City ran through 2012, the Chiefs reportedly have cut off his payments. If that’s true, he has plenty of reasons (possibly several million) to be looking for a job. Reid admits he offered Spagnuolo a job Posted by Mike Florio on February 1, 2012, 8:00 AM EST The buzz in Indy, at least among those who ordinarily cover the Eagles but who are covering the Super Bowl instead this week, is that coach Andy Reid deliberately waited for the cats to be away until holding a press conference. Though some of the regulars weren’t there to pepper him with questions, Reid said plenty. One of the most significant nuggets came from his admission that he offered former Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo a job. “If you can have two great coaches on defense, that’s even better than having one,” Reid said, via Andy Schwartz of CSNPhilly.com. “That’s about as far as it went there. We didn’t talk about titles. We didn’t go into any of that. . . . He ended up going to New Orleans.” They didn’t talk about titles perhaps because they didn’t need to talk about titles. What other title would Spagnuolo have than defensive coordinator? While Reid predictably claims both Spagnuolo and Castillo would have remained on the staff, it’s the clearest piece of evidence that, unlike last year, Reid wanted to explore his alternatives before firing his defensive coordinator. Since Reid ultimately could find no one better than Castillo — whose prospects were buoyed by the late-season performance of the defense — Castillo stays. But if things don’t improve dramatically in 2012, Spagnuolo could be offered another job with the Eagles next year. The title next time around could be “head coach.”

Greg Manusky interviews for Raiders defensive coordinator Posted by Josh Alper on February 1, 2012, 10:54 AM EST The Raiders locked up Greg Knapp as their offensive coordinator and now they’re moving on to the other side of the ball. Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that the team interviewed Greg Manusky for the defensive coordinator position. Chuck Bresnahan, the coordinator for the 2011 season, hasn’t been officially discharged, but every indication is that he will not be retained for next season. Manusky was the defensive coordinator for the 49ers from 2007-2010 and led the Chargers defense before being dismissed at the end of the season. 49ers secondary coach Ed Donatell, who worked with new head coach Dennis Allen in Atlanta, has also been mentioned as a candidate for the job. Donatell was once defensive coordinator with the Packers. The Raiders also wanted to speak with Broncos linebackers coach Richard Smith, whose candidacy seemed strong thanks to working under Allen with Denver last season. The Broncos denied their divisional rivals permission to speak to Smith, though, which means they will need to keep looking a little bit longer.

Colts hire Greg Manusky as defensive coordinator Posted by Josh Alper on February 2, 2012, 12:23 PM EST Chuck Pagano’s first Colts coaching staff is one piece closer to completion. Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that the team has hired Greg Manusky to be their defensive coordinator in 2012. Manusky was fired by the Chargers last month after running their defense for one season. Manusky ran the 49ers defense for the four previous seasons and left when the team made the move to Jim Harbaugh before this season. The Colts were close to hiring Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler for the job, but he decided to remain in Pittsburgh. Manusky interviewed for the vacant Raiders defensive coordinator position earlier this week. Former Packers coordinator Ed Donatell is considered a contender for that position.
