Eff... knew there was a good reason I was in hibernation..
This lamonte guy must have some incriminating photos of the big show for as much love he gets from our hires...
And before one of you ***Demon*** cough Damian*** starts to suggest that we hired this guy based off of him sharing the same agent rather than his stellar football background I am merely taking this opportunity to poke some fun...

I think that this is a bit of a stretch to think that Childress will have much or any influence on our Draft decisions.
Like I said earlier, they hired him in a prominent role.. I would hope they would at least take his opinion into consideration. if they don't, then why did they hire him?
He's a guy with 33 years in football.. he knows stuff.. Stuff that you and I may never know..
He was hired to be our OC, not Assistant head coach / GM ... I think you are blowing this way out of proportion.
I'm quite sure that the personal dept. Does not need another chief and has a better grasp on the situation then does Childress coming in ... He might have and probably will have a say on the offensive players and that might weigh into who makes the team, but OC, do not normally have a say in the Draft or FA. That's a far stretch.

Noones saying that theres a "No Brad's Club" sign hanging out of Draft meetings...
But to say that they would be specifically cunsulting HIM is probably not accurate...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Well you can't say the Browns lack experience:
Ray Rhodes
Dick Jauron
Brad Childress
Mike Holmgren
Certainly Pat Shurmur has plenty of people around him to seek consul. They say two heads are better than one. Hopefully four heads can get her done.
Totally agree. Now, we just need the talent to compete.

LOL,
No it is you who is over thinking this move.
They did not bring him here because they need his help and impute on personal decisions ... Decisions that he really should not and could not be expected to make at this juncture. Childress hasn't been a part of the process and it's a process that is probably pretty close to being a forgone conclusion anyway.

I agree, but let's be honest what does he know about what he has to work with first hand at this point? Not enough to make decisions on who or even what imo.

GREAT GOOGLY BOOGLY.. Go freakin read what I wrote.. Never NOT ONCE did I say they would be SPECIFICALLY CONSULTING HIM..
But if you think they aren't going to be sitting around a table talking things over and NOT ask his opinion, OR AT LEAST listen if he offers it, you are doing drugs...

Probably true,, in fact, I bet you are correct, but do you think for one second that they wouldn't let him in on the plans? I bet he is well aware, or will be in a short time, what the plan is.

OC's handle play calling and personnel packages and clock mangement. All the things Sherbert was..green at.. Now it seems initially that Sherbert will call the plays..but..I suspect Chilly will assist with that..giving a lot of input to him.

Year away from football gave Childress fresh perspective By Vic Carucci, Senior Editor Posted 21 hours ago By spending a year away from football, new Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress was able to gain a fresher perspective about the game. MOBILE, Ala. – Sometimes, the chance to step away from something you’ve done for a long time gives you a chance to get a fresher perspective. New Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress had such an experience after being fired as coach of the Minnesota Vikings following the 2010 season and spending the 2011 campaign out of football. It marked the first time he had been in that position in 33 years, which was among the first thoughts that crossed my mind as I learned of his hiring Friday while here for the Senior Bowl. Childress spent part of his first summer away from the game dabbling in media as an analyst for SiriusXM NFL Radio. In that capacity, he visited the Browns’ training camp as part of the satellite station’s training-camp tour and joined me as a guest on Cleveland Browns Daily. During our conversation, he mentioned that while visiting the Browns he had discussed the chance to be an observer, rather than a participant, at a camp with team president Mike Holmgren. At the time, Childress saw being “able to see how somebody else does it for the first time in 33 years” as highly valuable even at this stage of his career. Some of Childress’ visit was reviewing videotape with Browns coach Pat Shurmur, with whom he had worked on the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff. Childress was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator and Shurmur was their quarterbacks coach. Although they shared the same vision for the West Coast offense (an obvious factor in the Browns’ decision to hire Childress), Childress approached the session with the expectation that he would learn something new. “You only know what you know in your little box,” he told me. “… As we go down the road (with the tour) … I’m taking notes.” Childress had said then he was “open and amenable” to any and all coaching opportunities that might come his way. “I’m just happy and grateful that I’m having the opportunity to go around and see some different people do it,” he said. link Appears Chilly was opening a door last year... as most of us assumed knowing of his visit...I wonder how many Browns games he watched last season... lol

j/c I'm not excited about this hire at all. I've had my share of Chilly ball, living in central MN watching the vikes. He had the best running back in the league, and lacked total imagination on offense. I would argue that if a person knew nothing about Chilly's background, pre-Favre- you wouldn't even know the vikes were a WCO. It really was a pathetic attack. He lacks a killer instinct, if Mangini style of keep of close and hope for the best at the end makes you happy- then you'll be happy with Chilly. Because that is what you are going to get, keep it close- i think i have bald spots in my head thanks to this guys playcalling and overall offensive mentality.
The one plus i can see out of this hire is the browns will be a much better screen team. He knows how to implement that attack in the offense- we just need to find our version of Chester Taylor in order to run it effectively. That will be a welcome change from the screen plays last year that lost yards every attempt.

Are you serious? You think he's not going to be watching game film of his offense from last year?!? What's he going to do? just sit back and say I'll worry about the offense after the draft?
I don't think he'll be the final say but he'll have a say... when the Texans brought in Wade Philips this year he basically was given almost full control of the draft with HUGE imput on what they needed during draft day and through FA... (of course it was pretty darn obvious what they needed). The point is, Chilly is not a complete idiot... he can look at the tape and figure out what players we have and what we need... plus what type of players he and Shurmur need...

Oh brother!
He was not brought here to be the head Coach or the GM.
Coach's Coach and GM's make personnel decisions.
And Shurmur is still going to have control over the offense. He is taking a step back a delegating some of his responsibilities, but he is not jumping ship and saying here take over chillie.
I never said anything close to what you are trying to imply.
Of coarse Childress is going to get to work and do the job that he was brought here to do. That's not the issue.
My issue was many, many post ago there was a link of an story posted that the scribe was say Chilldress would help to make our draft decisions and I said that was a big stretch and it's also a pile of bull.
If you think that Heckert and the rest of the brass don't already know or have a good idea about this team and the prospects and players they would like to pursue, then you are not up to speed.

I don't know but Childress a heckuva lot better than Brian Dumboll. Maybe Childress looks so appealing is in relation to how inept Brian Dumboll was as the Browns OC. Childress is the 1st OC since Chudzinski that comes off as actually having a clue as to how to actually move the chains and put points on the board Brian Dumboll..a brillant hire by Mangini

What's bull is you thinking that he'll have no input. that's just flat out silly.
He has 33 years of experience in Football (not all NFL) he's very familiar with the system we have (want) here. He knows the types of players that best suit that system (as do Shurmur, Holmgren and Heckert).
His word will never be the final word.
He'll have imput. of this I'm sure.
But for whatever reason, you simply refuse to believe that is possible.. I'm not sure why..,
I'm absolutly sure that when the decision was made to go with Chilly, there was discussion behind closed doors that Chilly would assist in the evaluation of players both in the draft and FA.
Now,, unless I'm mistaken, you seem to feel that because he's new here (in fact, I'm not even sure he's in the building working yet) that he couldn't know what te plans are. Probably some truth to that. But damn man, he's been in football for a long time. he'll catch on quickly.
Remember something else., Chilly, shurmur and Heckert worked a lotta years together. There is a foundation of trust already there.
Chilly comes with a recommendation from Reid as well. Do you think that doesn't carry a little weight with Holmgren?
Just in case you don't believe Reid said good things:
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2012/01/philadelphia_eagles_coach_andy.html
Bottom line, chilly is new to the browns, but not new to the NFL or Football..
They'll listen to him, they'll ask him questions and opinions and I"m damn sure they'll take them into consideration..

Not sure this has been posted. Quote:
New Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress has knowledge ... and baggage: Terry Pluto's Talkin' Published: Sunday, January 29, 2012, 3:02 AM Updated: Sunday, January 29, 2012, 3:02 AM By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer Follow 14 Share close Digg Stumble Upon Fark Reddit Share Email Print View full sizeAndy Blenkush, Associate Press file photoBrad Childress was not a popular guy in Minnesota, but should that be held against him here in Cleveland? ABOUT THE BROWNS AND BRAD CHILDRESS . . .
1. Because Brad Childress was fired as the head coach of the Vikings after a 3-7 start to the 2010 season and because he was despised by much of the Twin Cities media -- and several Vikings players -- it's easy to dismiss him as being able to help the Browns as offensive coordinator.
2. It's hard to know how he'll do in the job -- especially if he has the play-calling duties. He called plays only once -- in 2006, his first season as the Vikings' head coach. After that, he let his offensive coordinator call the plays. In his three years as offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, head coach Andy Reid called the plays.
3. The Vikings hired Childress in 2006 to bring some discipline to an organization that needed it. When Childress was hired from Philadelphia, the Vikings' owners also talked to current Browns GM Tom Heckert. The Vikings wanted them as a package deal, but Heckert turned down the Vikings to stay with Philadelphia.
4. A problem immediately emerged. Childress became a rookie head coach with no strong general manager. He'd never been a head coach at any level, never called plays in the NFL. The Vikings seemed to think he would be the next Reid, the Eagles' coach who strongly backed Childress for the job. Reid runs the Eagles' football operation.
5. Childress was soon making major player-personnel decisions. Think of Bill Belichick's early days with the Browns. Also think of how Belichick did a poor job in news conferences communicating to the fans. Childress was soon nicknamed "Chilly," because that was his personality. He cut wide receiver Marcus Robinson on Christmas Eve, and seemed to believe many public relations aspects of the job were a waste of time.
6. The Vikings improved in terms of discipline and performance under Childress, moving from six wins in '06 to a 12-4 mark in 2009. Veteran players complained his approach to offense was too strict, and that he failed to make it clear what was expected from the players. But the fact is he did win a number of games.
7. The players believed Childress gave Brett Favre special treatment. It worked the first season when Favre led the team to NFC Championship Game after the 2009 season. The next year, Favre missed much of training camp -- one of his tricks near the end of his career as he'd threaten to retire. Childress convinced Favre to return, and then the coach personally picked up the quarterback at the airport. To many players who felt frozen out by Childress' personality, this was offensive.
8. But in 2010 -- Favre's second season -- the quarterback was beat up and ineffective. Soon, he and Childress were clashing. Childress traded a third-rounder to New England for fading Randy Moss, and then cut Moss a month later.
9. So why would Childress be a decent choice as offensive coordinator for the Browns? Start with the job -- offensive coordinator. It's not running the team, making trades, or dealing with off-the-field issues. It's purely coaching football, the offense.
10. Childress' critics will maintain there was nothing great about his offenses in Minnesota except when Favre had his last big season. His supporters will say that Childress is a solid football man who was doing far too many jobs, given way too much responsibility. And yet, he did have some success. Certainly a three-year span of eight, 10 and 12 wins would be welcome in Cleveland.
11. More importantly, Childress will be working for two men he knows and respects -- Heckert and head coach Pat Shurmur. All have football roots reaching back to Philadelphia, where they all worked for Reid. With Mike Holmgren (Reid's early mentor) running the Browns, the team has a strong front office in terms of experienced football men. Childress will not be making personnel decisions. Nor will be spend much time with the media, other than a weekly news conference during the season.
12. The big question will be if Childress can adjust to a much smaller role after having so much control in Minnesota. Of course, he had no job last season -- and needs to rebuild his reputation if he hopes to become a head coach again. Being a part of reviving the Browns' offense would help that cause. If he fails here, he'd have to know his career is in real trouble.
13. In his four-plus seasons as the Vikings' coach, his offense ranked 23rd, 13th, 17th, fifth and 23rd.
14. The Browns must decide if Childress will call the plays or if Shurmur will keep doing it. I've always believed play-calling should be done by the offensive coordinator, unless the head coach has an exceptional track record in that area. It is significant that Childress gave up play-calling after his first year as the Vikings' head coach.
15. Finally, the Vikings are still paying Childress -- $3.3 million in 2012.

Different coaches all together, but i would probably give the nod to Chilly. But that is on head coaching and a smart, disciplined team. His play calling is a big gamble- i've read all over the place now that he only called plays his first year, i don't think that is accurate. He had the clip board in hand more then one year, the head set on and his mouth a flappin' calling the plays. Now maybe its just that Bevell "called the plays" and Chilly had final say..... But once Chilly was canned, the talk was that the handcuffs were off of Bevell and he could finally call the game as he wanted.

Just my .02
I dont see how this is a bad thing. Are there better candidates out there? probably. Are they willing to come to Cleveland? probably not. There is no way he can make it worse than not having anyone last season. Im glad he is on the team.

But for whatever reason, you simply refuse to believe that is possible.. I'm not sure why..,
Maybe because the brass already have a plan in place (this year).
You think they need his impute in the draft and FA ... I do not.
Lets see what he does with X's & O's, before we anoint him part of the personnel decisions making process too.

I never said you said this;

Childress will help the Browns make key decisions such as whether or not McCoy can be their starter, whether or not to re-sign Peyton Hillis and what to do with the No. 4 and No. 22 picks in the first round. He'll be critical in the evaluation of quarterback prospects such as Baylor's Robert Griffin III and Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill, who was coached by Sherman in college.
And I said that this was a far stretch.
Then You jumped on Marry's bus
Ignorance is sure bliss. You kept telling me I was putting words into your mouth and the whole time I have been debuting some one else's words.

Chilly coached at the East west game, so his input into players practice habits and ability to grasp his offense will be sought.

I'm absolutly sure it will be,, But Fl doesn't seem to get it..
he must think that Chilly will be allowed in the room, but will not be allowed to speak or something

Saying the above "I think that is a far stretch" statement does not imply that Childress would not have anything to add to the table, but he is not "critical" in the process.
To imply this I think undermines Heckert and his scouting department, who he relies heavily on to make those decisions. Furthermore decisions such as what their plans are with Hillis is probably already a foregone conclusion either way. I'm sure they no what figures they want to spend and they are willing to offer and a OC has no hand in the dealings with contracts.

OH Come on Fl
Heckert, Shurmur and Chilly have known each other for years and years. They come from a very successfull program run by a Holmgren diciple
If you think they won't take his thoughts seriously, you are smoking some seriously bad weed man..
They brought him in as OC.. While the principle job description is to run the O, it doesn't mean they won't count on his thoughts about free agents and draft picks.
They will listen, they will take his knowledge and put it to good use.
And what I've maintained from the start of our little Minibattle here is that they didn't hire him to sit on a shelf.. he'll be included..
But no, he won't make the final decisions.. that's not his job..
