I'm not so sure that he's an upgrade at all.
He never developed as a pass rusher and he was kinda terrible against the run.
So,he's not better than jayme Mitchell?

More experience? Yes.
Better? Flip a coin. I think they're that close to being the same player.

Wimbley didn't impress me the first time around, and he didn't really impress me in Oakland.
4 of his 7 sacks came against a backup T in one game against San Diego. He doesn't make impact plays against the run, struggles to set an edge playing either OLB or an outside rush DE type position, and has never really shown great instincts for the game.
He'll also probably be expensive.
Pass.

I agree with all that.
Savage, who supposedly knew how to draft for the 3-4 defense, missed on this 1st round pick.

And Heckert called Jayme Mitchel the best pass rusher on the team
Looks like we're just screwed when it comes to GM's knowing how to find DE's??

Nah, because Heckert did find this guy named Sheard, who had a "decent" rookie season .......

Yeah and he got first round talent in round two also. Sheard might not have had the most sacks of the rookie DE's, but he started from day one and was not just a PRS unlike the youngster the 9ers picked in the first.

Sheard also did a nice job stuffing plays for a loss, and was a *ahem* force in forcing fumbles.

Yeap, he also had many QB pressures.
I think that He has room to grow/improve, but I couldn't be more happy with him to this point. To me he was as good if not better then some of the first round picks.
Now we just need to find another and we will have the makings for a good 'young' DL. This defense is predicated on pressure and that sometimes can come at a cost of maybe not being great vs the run. Although I thought that our GL defense was pretty stout at times. There are all sorts of defensive philosophies, but being that this has become a passing League 'first' ... I think its more important to find that guy who can even up the pressure from both sides. They won't be able to double up on Sheard as they did late in the year either.

Mitchel could possible improve too. It all depends what his problem was. If it was mental then maybe it can be corrected. If he just can't do the job then he will move down the depth chart because of better talent being added.

I question the "upgrade" as well. His "pressure" and sacks (again, trusting my memory, always hazardous) came most often from behind the QB. Tackle just rode him past the QBee and beyond, and he would frantically work back and arrive late. This IS a disruptive move, but about all he had. To be fair, I thought he was wasted with the backside drops into coverage instead of more pressure. Think it worked once. If Jauron can get more out of his tank, well, then welcome home. But he isn't the LB we need or the run stopper we need and arguably might be a pass rush accessory. Seems like he would be a heavy pickup just for ST or special needs .
