Browns won't tender Marcus Benard Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2012, 11:47 AM EST APDuring the 2011 season, the Browns opted to pay linebacker Marcus Benard after a motorcycle accident ended his season. They don’t plan to pay him in 2012. More specifically, they don’t plan to make the potential restricted free agent a tender offer. A league source tells PFT that the Browns have informed Benard that he won’t receive one of the various possible RFA tenders, which means he’ll be free to leave as of March 13 at 4:00 p.m. ET. That doesn’t mean the Browns will give Benard the boot; indeed, coach Pat Shurmur said last year that the undrafted free agent out of Jackson State has a future with the team. If so, it’ll happen because the Browns choose to offer him a free-agent contract — and because Benard chooses to accept it.

Because he had one accident? You act like he has a history of doing things...
I doubt the FO was looking at him as a KEY piece anyways, he's a good situation passrusher, but not much beyond that...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

How many times did this kid miss practice and or games because of personal reasons and undisclosed illnesses? Even had a couple of panic attacks or anxiety attacks or something like that.
I want this kid to succeed and he has a plethora of talent but he must get his crap together or he is going to find out what the letters N. F. L. stand for. I mean the kid has a golden opportunity to come in last year and earn a starting spot. He comes in overweight and barely made the roster.

he's alright,, but if we are ever going to get better, guys of his skill level need to be replaced by someone that's an upgrade.. I wish him well if he stays or goes..

Benard belongs on this team over other guys that we have playing DE. Dude is a good pass rusher. Dumb move IMO.

I do not think that the coaches/front office like him. I do think that he has a quirky personality, and that it takes a strong hand at all times to keep him on the right path. He doesn't strike me as the kind of player you should expect to do a lot of stuff on his own, but if you stay on top of him, he'll work as hard as anyone.
The team doesn't seem to want that kind of player, and that's their right. I think that he's a useful player, but probably not a guy I would want to depend on, or pay as, as a starter.

Eh, it wasn't just an accident. Looking at this article, it was a very stupid one
http://www.woio.com/story/15658897/cleveland-browns-player-involved-in-an-accident
We're paying him all that money, and he's driving like an idiot on a motorcycle. Sorry Marcus, that's a terrible decision. The team was depending on him and we lost him for the season.........
I do respect his pass rush ability though, so if we re-sign him. That's fine. But the FO has every right to be pissed at him.

I would have agreed with that until I saw the Mary kay Cabot video from this afternoon at the combine. in it she says that browns plan on keeping him..

it's just a brief tidbit,, but it's there..

Yeah. I saw that too. Interesting that two beat reports have two different stories. Ulrich saying we will not tender and try and re-sign. Kay Cabot saying we will try and re-sign and if that doesn't work might tender.

Me too. Kid has had a lot of time to think about everything as he recovered physically so maybe he will have matured and become more focused on being the player he has the potential to become. Never know sometimes the light just comes on for them.
As I said earlier, you can't count on him but I would hate to completely give up on him also but can't blame the FO if they choose to give someone else his spot.

My comment up a little ways in this thread about him being "alright" is pretty much on the money., He's solid,, he's got skills but something is missing. Not at al sure what it is.
But, if they can sign him, I'm cool with it.. If they upgrade that position, I'm even better..

Two things.... 1. Don't know how serious and long term the injuries were from the accident. 2. They obvious ( and likely rightfully) think he's not going to attract much in free agency. You think someone is going to give up real picks for him? They likely want him back but considering the his recent history they figure to get him cheap. Maybe it's a gamble but just part of the negotiation process. If someone else makes a reasonable offer nothing stops us from also making a reasonable offer.

1. If our scouts cant find somebody better to sign than Bernard, than we need to fire each and everyone of them TODAY....
2. Lets replace Bernards talent with better talent, we dont need Bernard, if we do than we can expect to finish 4-12 or something and never get better.
3. If Bernard wants to be part of this team, it's gonna be on our terms not his and for a role player in the NFL for a measly $ 400,000 a year....not to shabby

I've never heard of this Bernard character......
As for Benard, I have to disagree with you. If the FO thinks he's got his head on straight, I'd be interested in re-signing him depending on the cost. Do I want him to fill Mitchel's DE spot? No, we'll need another guy to come in and do that.
But I do think that Benard could be valuable in spot duty, as a back up and someone to rotate in on passing downs. He's weak against the run, but he is somewhat effective rushing the QB.
This all depends on how healthy he is, having crashed his motorcycle the way he had and launched himself +100 feet or something ridiculous like that.
But, otherwise, the guy did get 7.5 sacks for us is 2010, and it's only his 4th year in the NFL. We might not want to drop the RFA tag on him, but depending on the price, I'd definitely consider bringing him back (as long as his attitude and medicals check out).
Value is an important thing to get. And if the cost is cheap, Benard could definitely play a role for us next season. Notice, I'm not talking about starting DE, but as a backup.

Pre-Sheard.. Benard was out BEST pass rusher.. all this character concern is nonsense. Not sure who started it, but somebody believed it on this board and has stuck with that notion.
I'm not going to fault the guy for having the type of vehicle that he had... to each his own.
the only other issue that i remember has been health related. didn't he faint or pass out or something?
Draft your future RDE, and resign Benard for depth. He would be perfect rotating in and out. Better than Mitchell for sure.

He has a lot of driving violations. Driving with a suspended license and things like that. Plus, he was speeding when he got into that motorcycle accident. Some driver in a car driving 60mph right before the accident said he "Whizzed right by him"
Acting carelessly on a bike is a concern to me. Doesn't mean he's a jerk, but it does mean that he might have poor judgement. We pay him a lot of money to be able to play football (which means protecting his body) and he is acting carelessly on a motorcycle...... that's definitely not holding up his end of the deal
But I do agree, he got off to a slow start last year because of the switch back to 4-3 and his weight gain due to no contact with the FO last year. Then he gets into a motorcycle accident.
But, he still is 26 years old, has pass rush ability, and could benefit this team.

sounded like bad agent advice / miscommunication due to the lockout more than anything else. Benard was probably worried he'd be odd man out with switch to the 4-3 and put on pounds. He was able to drop and get back into shape without much issue.

Exactly. That was one of the biggest problems with a situation like ours. Teams making changes on offense or defense could have no contact with their players, even to let them know what to expect. (although, if I were a new coach coming in, and saw that a lockout was likely, I would have thrown together a quick outline for each position as far as what to expect, what the team's expectations are, etc. Those could be done in a single day, quite easily. They could have overnighted a letter with these things outlined to each player without any problem at all.

I agree, or at least I would have gotten it to the guys during that VERY short period where a playbook was administered and such

In all honesty though, how hard would it have been for Shurmur to have said to his position coaches and coordinator, "Put together a 1-2 page information letter for each position so these guys know what to expect when they report."

Indeed. He could be a beast as a situational pass rusher.

Not hard at all. I think that's just bad preparation from a 1st time head coach.
It's easy to look back on things and say "Man, that would have made sense"
But that's the easy thing to do, it's much harder to analyze that type of thing in the present. Happens to me all the time when I look back on something in the past and say, "Man, why didn't I think of that?"
But you figure, someone would have thought of it and suggested it to him

That's kind of my point. Holmgren is Team President. You would think that he would have thought of it. Jauron is very experienced. The coaches we kept had to have an idea of what we were changing when they were interviewed/rehired.
Someone should have thought of it.

I can't remember the specifics of the timing on things, but I don't recall that there was a whole lot of time for Shurmur or anyone to put anything together before the union de-certified and the lockout happened. At that stage, I think Shurmur had pretty much just gotten here and was still putting a staff together.
Once the lockout occurred, nobody could talk to the players or give them anything.

He had enough time to give Colt a playbook. Should've been planning ahead. It's not exactly as if the lockout snuck up on anyone.

I believe that there are/were reports that he did (or someone gave him something to help him prepare), but that isn't much... and without a coach to help him go over it, it's not going to do much more than be something to give a familiarity at best.
Shurmur was hired Jan 13th. The union decertified March 11. That's only two months to put together a staff, review the roster, get up to speed on everything and everyone... AND still try to jump start the offensive learning.
Yeah, they are coaches at the highest level, but none of them have an 'S' on their chest. There's only so much that can be done.

Ahh, correct me, but there was some kinda change due to a ruling that allowed players to come in. but it only lasted a day at best, that was the day he got the playbook... Memory,,, first thing to go.. I could be wrong

He gave him the playbook prior to the lockout. Problem was, it happened during a period of time where the union collectively bargained to forbid coaches from meeting with their players. Browns players had gone to the facility to meet Shurmur, but technically were not permitted to do anything football related. The league apparently considered dispensing of playbooks to fall under the umbrella, most likely in part because the lockout was looming and they wanted to have every possible bit of leverage against the players and the union.
