beleive what you want m, but I have posted articels showing that they continue to work on methods and research to reduce concussions.

And you have yet to show proof that Roger Goodell is paying off Ridell to keep them from doing anything about concussions. But as usual, proof is a one way street with you, you want us all to prove our side, but you never feel the need to adhere to the same standards.

That's par for the course for him.

The fact is there would be more friction on a soft helmet and target more of the impact directly into the head rather than allowing the hit to slip off.

This is a huge argument against soft padding on the outside of the helmet. The torque on the head/neck from sticking after a hard collision could be lethal.

I think you misunderstand. NFL concussions haven't gone up necessarily, but there have been more reported due to the new procedures put in place to keep players from playing through or with concussions.

Here is an article:

florfan...Where did I say Goodell was paying off Riddell to keep them from doing anything about concussions?

Obviously you either have your facts wrong or you have me mistaken for someone else...

dawglov5...there were more concussions and head injuries in the 2011 season compared to the 2010 season.

The numbers are up even though...

...Goodell has levied a record number of fines
...Riddell introduced their latest greatest safest helmet and urged NFL players to use the new helmet.
...and the NFL changed the kickoff rules which resulted in a 50% reduction in concussions, according to the NFL.

STILL MORE CONCUSSIONS RESULTED...

IMO...
... the fines do not help to reduce concussion frequency by any measurable amount

...the latest greatest football helmet from Riddell is no better than the previous model...which is very similar to the model I wore back in the late 1960s and early 70s...consisting of a rock hard plastic outer shell with pads and airbags located inside.

...the NFL changed the kickoff rules which resulted in a 50% reduction in concussions, according to the NFL.

Legitimate question for everyone..

DO YOU BELIEVE A FOOTBALL PLAYERS SHOULD HIT/BLOCK/TACKLE AS HARD AS THEY CAN?

I believe a football player should give a maximum effort on every play, regardless of the position they play. If injuries result, so be it...injuries are part of the game.

That is how I was taught to play the game and it is how I want my NFL football played in the future.

Mac, to borrow your phrase, can you offer proof that the number of concussions went up last year as opposed to the number of concussions reported?

Actual vs Reported has probably gotten alot closer since Medical staffs are watchin for em. I'd venture a guess that the number of concussions has stayed roughly the same, with more of em being reported than in years past. Really is alot simpler than Mac is making it.

How did this discussion go from "the Commissioner is trying to change the game" to one of a helmet / concussion issue? They are separate issues imo.

I don't agree that the judgment was too harsh and I believe that it has a far broader message then just to those who where involved.

True but he was the alarmist who was screaming willy nilly the Commissioner is trying to change the game with his ruling.

Now the discussion has moved to one of player safety

2 very separate issues, because this is as much about proper sportsmanship (or lack thereof) then anything else.

Deflection?

Hopefully I'm allowed to attempt to get this thread back on track...

As for Payton, is he banned from talking, texting, calling, e-mailing and showing his face to anyone employed by the Saints? And how would the NFL know he's not helping out the interim coach prepare for the upcoming game?

I kinda view it as the Commish isn't trying to change the game. Rules were put in place and agreed upon by the owners and players.. Those rules were broken by the Saints. The commish exercised his duties to punish those found to have broken the rules....

That's not changing the game,, that's merely enforcing the rules...

Discussing helmets,, pads, how hard a player should hit another player etc.. meaningless

Mac is off base on this,,, Way off base....

I would think it would be hard to keep that quiet. And if it got out that he was helping I would think he would be banned for life. If I were him I'd take my punishment and not risk making it worse.
