We can only wish we had a GM as good as Buddy.
Fill as many of your needs in free agency, get your depth in the draft.
There is more than one way to skin a cat.. Buddy doesn't have all the answers..
One thing for sure, if I'm going to follow a path, I'm going to follow one that has, over the years, proven to be more successful in building teams that last.
You don't do that through Free Agency, you do that through the draft.. History teaches us that the best teams over the last 20 years have been teams that don't go nuts in Free Agency..
yes, you will find examples of teams built that way, but without doing a bunch of research, I'd be willing to bet that steak dinner we spoke of that teams that last, are almost always built mostly from the draft with pieces and parts added as needed and when the RIGHT GUY comes available via either FA or trade.
Now I know you are a man that likes a good steak... so,,, wanna take me up on the bet... I mean, if we gotta do the research, there has got to be a pot of beef at the end of the rainbow right

Lawrence Vickers got cut by the Texans..... I'd take him back. Even apart from the blocking, I think he showed better hands than Marecic did last year.

I personally would prefer Pierre Garcon. He is a proven receiver with a less price tag. JMHO Go Brownies!!!

Grubbs anyone? If we cut Steinbach, we'd save ~6mil...if we can get Grubbs for close to that annually (prolly 2-3mil more), I'd do it...a "lateral" move but Grubbs has been healthier and is 3-4 years younger
How about the idea of Stealing those two young starting guards Legursky and Foster from the Squeelers for No Compensation? We see what that have Plus we kill Pitt's OL! It's a win-win in my book! JMHO Go Brownies!!

Their only OL I would look at is Pouncey. Their line stunk like 3 day old fish on a 100 degree day ...... wrapped in skunk crap.

If the Saints re-signed him, I wouldn't classify him as a missed opportunity. In my mind, he never hit the open market, so he wasn't really a "free agent".
It doesn't hurt my feelings since I didn't want to sign him anyway (price and injuries).
No big deal.
In previous years, I was very excited and hopefuly of at least one medium-to-large signing and a few smaller ones....but this year, I don't really care. I'm hoping we can snag a mid-level guard and a vet CB/Safety.....but I'm not too worried if we don't. We have six picks in the first four rounds (Mmmmmmmmmmm).

I was not a fan of signing a wide receiver who has had microfracture surgery on both knees.

At the very least he is going to hit the free agent market. And it doesn't seem like they have made a huge effort to re-sign him.

On if he and his agent have talked to the Saints at all thus far:
“I think my agent spoke with them briefly, I wanna say maybe a day or two before the Combine started. And that was it. And it was real brief — no specifics.”
On if he or his agent has talked to them since:
“No. No they called me I wanna say maybe three weeks ago, four weeks ago, asking me if I had any questions or if we had any questions about the whole situation to give them a call. And I guess maybe I shoulda called them. But the only question I have is, How come there’s been no effort made to reach out to me? Even if it was just like a low deal, there’s been no effort.”

Wait a second, Vickers is the end all and be all of football players, right? I mean, according to many on this Board who are in the know, the reason we couldn't catch passes or get pressure on opposing QBs was because we released Vickers.
I say we sign him now to GUARANTEE our Super Bowl spot.

Cross Mario Manningham off the list. He stated in an interview with cleveland.com that he doesn't want to come to Cleveland because it's not a destination for free agents.
Let's see how the guy does when he doesn't have Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz on the field with him.

link Well, Lord knows if anyone's opinion should matter to us, it's Mario Manningham's. I mean, Lord knows Joe Thomas, arguably the best LT in the entire league, bolted at his first opportunity, and D'Qwell Jackson ran so fast it made everyone's heads spin. I guess my question is this: besides the almighty Manningham, what free agent has said he doesn't want to play in Cleveland?

Yet and guy like Joe Thomas stays put....
I don't want anyone dumb enough to belittle another city (especially one so near his hometown) Another one of those things where,, he's free to think what he likes,, but an idiot for speaking it out loud about it...

Yep. Thinking about it, who are the biggest free agents who have signed with new teams and had great success? I'm sure they're out there, but I can't think of one off the top of my head. And, did those guys sign with other teams because they don't want to play in Cleveland?
I have a feeling they might not want to play in Cleveland because they want to go somewhere with a chance of winning soon. I get that, I guess. But, I think as more and more teams play off the Packers mold of building through the draft, big name free agents are really going to be few and far between.

Thanks. While I dont really value his opinion. The team really shouldnt discount it. This could become a problem if this is really how players feel. This could mean having to pay a premium to bring in talent.

I get what you're saying. If we want the big talent, we're going to have to pay more than other teams. But I don't think the Browns are alone in that regard. Let's not make it like Cleveland is the only team that free agents might avoid.

I'm sure there are a lot. And their reasons might be the city, the franchise (the coach or the losing), the team (lack of a QB), or just that they want to live elsewhere. So what.
Here's the deal...Lerner's money is the same money that every other owner pays out. So some won't care.

I was thinking about this,, how many HIGH PROFILE Free Agents has Pittsburgh signed in the last 10 years.. Biggest I can think of is Jerome Bettis.. In fact, he's pretty much the only one I can think of and that was more than 10 years ago....
New England has signed some high profile guys, but mostly at the tail end of thier careers.. Most were still productive to a degree, Randy Moss comes to mind.. OchoCinco wasn't all that productive.. They picked up a RB in the early part of the 2000's from Cincy that turned out to be productive...
What about Green Bay? Colts? I know the Ravens have picked up a few..not many.(Dilfer probably had the greatest impact, but not the best) can't say much about the Giants either..
All recent Superbowl winners.. yet they use Free Agents as a piece of the puzzle, but not the center piece..
Did I miss any player that had a serious impact? Just doing this from memory..

Just to help clarify, Moss was traded from Oakland to the Pats. So yes, the teams that have been winning aren't signing free agents. AND they're in cold weather markets.
Build a winner through the draft. Our own will stay because we have money and are winning....who cares about what free agents say (especially a prima donna WR from NY says).

You are absolutely right and the funny thing is, in three or 4 years when these guys are looking to catch on with a winner for a chance at a Super Bowl with a team built from the ground up through the draft and built for the long haul, we won't need you! When that happens you will be a role player that had to latch on at a reduced rate to feel relevant again. Guys that have a brain can see what's going on here and see a coaching staff assembled of 4 or 5 former head coaches and the young talent in place in the best Division in the NFL. Manningham is a pea brain.
"Going from 4-12 to 6-10 isn't good enough. I believe we are going to be better than that. We're going to be a lot better than that." - Mike Holmgren (3/15/12)

Let me know when we have a HoF-caliber QB making our 2nd and 3rd and 4th and 5th round receivers and tight ends look good.
