Cleveland Browns 2012 NFL Draft: Tracking prospects with workouts or visits set up with Browns By Nate Ulrich Published: March 22, 2012 As the 2012 NFL Draft approaches, prospects are visiting and working out for teams. Below is a list of prospects with whom the Browns have reportedly set up meetings. A couple of notes about the list: It will continue to be updated leading up to the draft, which runs April 26-28; Last year, a similar list was featured on this blog. Defensive tackle Phil Taylor, wide receiver Greg Little, cornerback Buster Skrine and offensive lineman Dominic Alford were prospects who made the list and ended up with the Browns. Here is this year's version: Virginia Tech RB David Wilson (visit) -- NFLDraftScout.com projection: first- or second-round pick. Louisiana-Lafayette TE Ladarius Green (workout) -- NFLDraftScout.com projection: third-round pick. Illinois DE Whitney Mercilus (workout) -- NFLDraftScout.com projection: first-round pick. Cincinnati RB Isaiah Pead (workout) -- NFLDraftScout.com projection: second- or third-round pick. web page ------------------------------- There was another RB visit but can't link it as of yet. Really starting to look like that #4 is between Blackmon and Tannehill. BTW love TE Green, huge potential in this offense.

Mmmm, not really.
Wilson isn't talked about nearly enough. I always think of him when RB comes up.
Also think Mercilus will be a beast...

And in another thread somebody swears the signs all point to Richardson.
Honestly, at this point I doubt that H&H are 100% sure who they'll take. So I seriously doubt any of us has a clue.
But speculation will keep us typing for roughly another month.

I know he's a slight stretch but I could see Heck going for Coples. Especially with a trade back by someone want Mo C or Blackmon.

I have to admit, I was adamently against Richardson not because I don't think he's going to be good but because I think we could take David Wilson or another running back later and he would be more than adequate...
Now I'm at the point where I believe either Richardson or Blackmon would be a good pick at #4.. both will be a very good (possibly great) long term piece to the puzzle that we desperately need.. which is why I'm against Tannehill, he's a reach and we absolutely positively CANNOT afford to totally wiff with the #4 pick.. and I don't think Blackmon or Richardson is a "wiff" but Tannehill might be.
Taking Tannehill at #4 is the "fan appeasement, PR" pick and not the "build the football team" pick.

I agree 100%. And, I sincerely doubt the Browns bring in a QB at no. 4 who will likely need some time to really get acclimated. If we were going to bring in a QB, it'd be someone like Luck or RGIII, guys who can hopefully step right in. But, since they're gone, if we get a QB, it won't be at 4, IMO.
I think the pick is between Richardson, Blackmon and Claiborne (assuming we don't trade out).
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Running back David Wilson scheduled to visit BrownsPublished: Friday, March 23, 2012 By Jeff Schudel JSchudel@News-Herald.com@jsbrownsinsider Running back David Wilson, projected as a second-round pick next month, is scheduled for a pre-draft visit to the Browns, according to a report on Scout.com. Wilson, 5-foot-10, 205 pounds, rushed for 1,709 yards in 2011 in his only season as a full-time starter at Virginia Tech. He is competing with Lamar Miller of Miami (Fla.) to be the second running back picked behind Trent Richardson of Alabama. Browns president Mike Holmgren and General Manager Tom Heckert want to improve the running game. Last year’s primary back, Peyton Hillis, signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs last week. The Browns scored only four rushing touchdowns in 2011 and Hillis scored three of them. The scouting report on Wilson is mostly positive. NFLdraftscout.com says as an outside runner Wilson is “A smooth, explosive athlete who accelerates quickly downfield with a rare extra gear that he can reach in a hurry.” As an inside runner, the report states he is a “tough guy to bring down and almost always gets positive yardage when he lowers his pads and gets north/south. Still very raw as an inside runner, running too indecisive and struggling to find running room at the line of scrimmage.” The report says Wilson had fumbling issues in college and that he butted heads with coaches while complaining he wasn’t getting enough carries. Wilson is also scheduled to visit Tampa Bay and the Falcons. The Browns pick fourth and 22nd in the first round and then get the 37th overall pick. NFLdraftscout.com, coincidentally, ranks Wilson as the 37th best player in the draft. The scouting service ranks Richardson sixth overall.

I like Lamar Miller better than Wilson. Runs harder, greater acceleration and once he gets through the hole he is gone. I would strongly consider Miller at 22 if Reiff and Glenn are gone.

Wilson is my #2 ranked RB from this draft. I think that he has the speed to take it the distance on any given play and you already probably know how I feel about taking a RB with the 4th selection, so I am glad to see us exploring our other options.

Wilson hits top gear really fast. I saw much better acceleration from him than from Miller (based on Miami v. Virginia and VT vs. UNC from this year) and he has great speed, too. However, if Wilson keeps up that "giving ground to try to get to the outside" crap then I want no part of him.

I thought Miller was much better at finding blocking seams when running inside. He had a bunch of runs where he hit the hole and was able to slip through what appeared to be a well defended play.
I haven't seen enough of Wilson (only the Miami v. VaTech game comes to mind where I thought Miller "looked" better).

I agree that there are parts of his game that he will need to be Coached and developed on, but speed kills at this level and he has that elite speed, that can separate him from the crowd at this level. Certainly worth exploring our options on, but I also don't think that much can be deduced from a visit.
It may mean something and perhaps it might just mean that we are ruling out other possibilities to Richardson ... We won't know until Draft day for certain.

I hope so, because at this level all of the backs can play, but speed is a separating non Coach able factor.

Taking Tannehill at #4 is the "fan appeasement, PR" pick and not the "build the football team" pick.
I quoted you in order to highlight what I think is flawed logic when it comes to the draft...and yes, it's about VALUE again
I disagree that it's all about "not whiffing" with a Top 10 pick...it's a risk-reward thing...we're not building a team to compete in a vacuum...that said, any GM can pick a sure fire GOOD player in the top 5, if that's what it is all about....you can draft the best MLB, G/C, RB or an other low value position every year in the 1st round..you'll "look good", because said player didn't bust but you have gained no advantage to the other 31 teams becaue they took a MLB, G/C or RB as good as you got in round 2 or 3..meanwhile that other team got a rare pass rush specialist or franchise QB with their 1st pick, whereas you gamble on Veikune and McCoy in the rounds where the other team got a decent MLB, G/C or RB...your SAFE G/C doesn't make a difference, in contrary you set yourself up to fail by drafting the SAFE guy 1st...you get my point? This is the Mangini FAIL draft all over again, "not to lose logic" at his best....there are enough good RBs, Gs or MLBs in the league and draft that the difference between the top third and bottom third isn't nearly as significant as at QB or DE
There's a reason 4 Top 10 Centers were FAs this offseason (almost every offseason)...same for Gs and MLBs...they don't make enough difference
That all said...no it's not dumb to take a QB that has (let's say) 40% bust chance instead of a RB that has only 5% bust chance...you don't draft in a vacuum...you draft for a particular team in a particular league...and value isn't determined by the "safeness" of a pick
For me drafting Richardson over Tannehill means safely sucking a little less long term but still not getting out of it, since 25 of the other 31 teams have good RB production too, whereas Tannehil would mean sucking more short term with some hope to get out of sucking all together long term...value, value, value...it's all about value

Thank youuu Mr. Heckert.
Been tired of these plodders ever since Droughns. I was happy with Harrison but apparently he was nuts..(Also broke Jim Brown's rushing record but who's keeping track) Give me some burst and break-away speed; save your "run em over" attitude for the 1970s please.
I have no idea how Hardesty ran a 4.49 at the combine. The guy is slow as molasses since his injuries. I'd rather stick the fastest guy possible at RB and hope for break away plays than stick Hardesty in there and celebrate when he turns 3 yards into 4. JMO.

unless Tannehill sucks. then it's sucking short term, sucking mid-term and sucking long term (while we take the time to make sure that yes, he does indeed suck). i'm confident that our scouts watched film on him, so I'm not worried about drafting him

... except that you can definitely over-think the whole value proposition at times. If you're picking in the top 5 and you have a shot at a stud player who who is likely to be a playmaker for a team as devoid of playmakers as the Browns are, you sit tight and take that player (unless you get a king's ransom to move out of that slot) IMO.
Getting a guy like Richardson who is an outstanding runner - maybe the best since AP - and a legit 3-down back (exceedingly rare in the NFL these days), to me, gives whoever is our QB a weapon we haven't had since we returned to the NFL. I'd rather see us grab an almost sure-fire playmaker at #4 and see what we might be able to do to move back up in the first to grab Tannehill if we really like him that much.

Generally, I could get on board with that thought.
However...THIS team RIGHT now...HAS to go with the 5% bust chance in its first two rounds.
We lack talent everywhere. We need at least one more offseason to acquire a base of players and a few difference-makers before we can start to get out of the vacuum and take the kind of chances you are referring to.
We don't have to be perfect in our roster to get out of the vacuum...but we suck more than the vacuum does right now.
Our picks in - and the particular pool of players in - this draft are set up perfectly for us to get better talent at the right positions in a short period of time.
It's reasonable to think that we may get a new starter in the draft at RT/WR/RB/CB given the depth at those positions.
We shore up those spots this year...and next year we are positioned to take a few chances.

Mourg I know it seems like i'm anti- your pick everythime but Lamar Miller should stay in college another year. I watched him a lot this year cuz someone I know went to HS with him. He does have great speed and if he gets through the hole he can take all the way. My issue with him is that he is horrible at hitting the hole and he is not much for breaking tackles and yards after contact. He reminds me of a track guy playing RB more then a RB who is fast. I think he could make an excellent third down back if he can catch (not sure how good his hands are).

LSU defensive lineman Michael Brockers has already visited the Carolina Panthers, Washington Redskins and the Tennessee Titans, according to a league source.
And he's scheduled to visit the St. Louis Rams, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots and the New York Jets.

recently watched WVU vs. South Florida. Irvin was only in on 3rd downs and only rushed the QB, except for a time when Julian Miller was out with an injury. I think if we're looking at Irvin, it may be as a pass rush specialist. I guess having him in for a visit would make sense, though, to see how he responds to LB drills.

I like Julian Miller a lot more.. with Rucker getting starter money.. Miller would be a great acquisition around the 6th round.

waste.
Last year we drafted only three of the 60(?) guys we had visit.
It is not a waste.
Brockers played two years of college football. Our staff needs to find out more about him. What if he is the next Warren Sapp and we never brought him in for a visit?

As I mentioned a while back Irvin fits the bill as to what Heckert looks for in a DE.
He's in the mix at 37.

Irvin was injured previously. That's the only reason he was being held back. Miller is not even close to the talent that Irvin is.

With all of these picks in the later rounds, I wouldn't be opposed to taking a punter with a huge leg. It would be nice to have a guy like Lechler.
