Reds' Ryan Madson out for 2012

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cincinnati Reds closer Ryan Madson has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and will miss the season.

Madson returned to Cincinnati and was examined by team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek. The Reds said Saturday that Kremchek told general manager Walt Jocketty the ligament was torn from the bone of Madson's right elbow.

Madson agreed in January to a one-year contract guaranteeing $8.5 million, after a $44 million, four-year deal to stay with Philadelphia collapsed in November.

Jocketty says: "We talked to the team. We all have to stay positive. We have alternatives internally that we will sort through in the next few days."

Crap!

Ouch!

You know Baker is itching to put Chapman back into the bullpen. This might be his [crappy] excuse.

I dunno they have Marshall who is more than capable of closing and Bray to be a lefty setup man. I think they need to keep working on Chapman as a starter because IMO Arroyo is gonna get lit up this year and may be moved.

Well, with Madsen out, and Marshall moving into the closer role, that leaves Bray as the only lefty out of the pen for middle relief. It makes sense.

Chapman probably would have started the year in AAA.

This.

I think the biggest issue here is who will set up since that is what Marshall was brought in to do. So save that last option on Chapman, this is probably where he fits in, especially if Masset fails at it again.

Chapman showed last year he doesn't have the arm to pitch consecutive days, hes a starter, keep him as one. Zavada isn't a bad option to take the other lefty spot.

What makes you think Zavada would be a decent option?

It would have been ideal for Chapman to start the year in AAA to continue working at being a starter again. A nice insurance for the rotation. Unfortunately with the Madsen injury, it doesn't appear that's going to happen.

Our bullpen is so deep that I completely forgot about Ondrusek. He should set up.

I am proud to say that I have had a successful Reds bypass operation (triple shunt) and follow the Tribe when I can. But this is a tough break for my friends who favor them, especially this close to season. My condolences. Buthey, baseball is just something we do until the real men heal! Hurry up draft!

He'll be 37 or 38 when that contract ends ......

I hope for your team's sake that he doesn't fall flat after the signing like Hafner did for us.

Sounds like it's a ten-year extension, actually, so he'll be 40.

This could end up being bad, but, for the time being, I'm excited.

These deals always look great when the guy signs them and is in his prime. Then he gets old and is still getting paid like he is in his prime.

Well it's no secret if you want to keep your superstars, you are going to have to pay.

Votto is probably the best pure hitter I have seen in a Reds uniform. The way he fouls off pitchers pitches at the last second is just uncanny. Hopefully Rolen can stay healthy, and have a productive year, or else he is not going to get a damn thing to hit this year.

And hopefully there is still room in the budget to lock up Phillips long term Not holding my breath though.

Anyway, this is great news.

So paying Tulowitzi roughly 158 million isn't paying? At the time, iirc one of the top ten in baseball?

And the Rays took a chance with Longoria, singing him to a long term contract shortly after he was called up, and that is virtually unheard of.

Baker: Chapman will begin season in bullpen

Right-hander Bailey wins final spot in Reds' starting rotation

By AJ Cassavell / Special to MLB.com | 04/02/12 3:30 PM ET

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Dusty Baker would like to have two Aroldis Chapmans -- one for his bullpen and one for his starting rotation.

But the Reds' manager is happy enough that he has one, and on Monday Baker announced that the flame-throwing lefty will start the season in the bullpen. That means right-hander Homer Bailey will begin the season in the starting rotation, and he'll pitch against the Cardinals on April 9.

"That was a very tough decision -- very, very tough because Chapman could either be one of our best starters or our best relievers," Baker said. "It's a situation where with the injuries that we have, and starting out early in the season where the starters are lucky to go five or six innings, we need to shore up our bullpen."

Bailey's inclusion fills out the starting rotation. Johnny Cueto will pitch the club's season opener against Miami, followed by Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Bailey and Mike Leake.

Baker said the struggles of lefty Bill Bray partially led to his decision to put Chapman in the bullpen. Baker said Bray "isn't a candidate right now to be a late-inning lefty guy," meaning Baker is planning to use Chapman in a very prominent relief role deep in games.

In the spring, Chapman looked very good in what many thought was his audition for a starting role. He went 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA in five appearances -- four of them starts. But he has yet to start a regular-season game, going 6-3 with a 3.27 ERA in his 69 appearances over two seasons with the Reds.

Baker reiterated that nothing is set in stone with his pitching staff -- or the rest of the roster. That's especially true now with his decision to start the season with 14 position players and 11 pitchers because of an early off-day.

The team will re-evaluate and possibly adjust the roster this weekend, depending on how well the pitching staff is preserved through the season's first couple of games.

"That's the story of this whole year," Baker said. "Until we get everything back together, it could be one of those dot-dot-dots -- to be continued."

As for Bailey, who gets the start after he went 9-7 with a 4.43 ERA last season, the thought of facing the Cardinals in the two teams' first meeting of the season is a prospect that has him excited.

"I haven't really thought about it like that, but I guess it sounds pretty cool," Bailey said of facing the defending champs. "It's just the first game of the season, though. It's a team that we know the hitters quite a bit so that brings some comfort."

This spring, Bailey is 1-2 with a 7.98 ERA in five starts, though he's confident enough with the finish to his Cactus League season to carry some positives into the regular season.

"Spring's kind of always the same," Bailey said. "For a pitcher, you're working on your fastball location and start working your way through and build your innings. My last game through, I finished. I threw well, and it's back into baseball mode."

So dumb. Chapman should have been sent to the minors and stretched out. Bullpen arms are the easiest thing to find in baseball.

For the Reds sake, I hope this goes and ends well. In recent history these mega contracts in small-to-mid markets end up destroying the team.

The Rangers went bankrupt because of ARod. The Twins are a worse team after they signed Joe Mauer (and by all 2012 season predictions, they might be the worst team in the AL Central). And I could go on and on and on listing horrible signings in MLB that ruined a teams payroll. At least in the NFL the teams can cut a bad contract. In MLB and the NBA, you're stuck.

I understand the importance of keeping your stars for the fans, with or without the wins that should go along with it. If I was an owner, I'd be running my team like the Indians. NO WAY I'd sign up to give Joey Votto $225 million in the Cincy market (during one of the worst recessions in American history too).

Good luck to y'all Reds fans.

I think it will work, they have a good young core in place and most of that core is under contract for the next few years. Although signing Phillips appears unlikely now, which I hate to see.

And if it's not working out in a few years you deal him off to a contender for prospects. And yes, that's the first scenario that pops into my head since things normally don't work out.

But for now I shall remain optimistic, I don't get this feeling much so I'm going to enjoy it while I can.

I think you guys have the team to beat in the Central and am tired of hearing about the Cardinals. They no doubt have a good team, but you don't take Albert away from that lineup and then lose Carpenter to injury and think they're the team to beat. The Brewers have a couple good arms and a couple good arms in the pen - and a fraud left fielder - but again, you don't take Fielder away and it doesn't matter. Plus I hate that team. lol.

The Reds made another significant financial commitment on Tuesday, giving All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips a six-year, $72.5 million contract.

I'll say one thing for you Reds, you're certainly making your push. Good now - but that's gonna be a rich, old left side of the infield in a few years.

I hate to put any stock in local talk radio, but the host was saying the Reds have a 4 billion $ tv deal on the horizon.

Maybe there's truth to that with these signings, I hope.

Phillips plays 2b, Votto plays 1b, so that would be the right side of the infield.

4 runs in 3 days, and a whopping 2 hits today.

I hate seeing quality starts going to waste, especially one from Bailey.

Yeah we acquired all these arms because we were such a great offense with shabby pitching. The pitching has held up its end, its time for the bats to hold up theirs

On a side note, Dusty kind of irked me with his postgame comment yesterday.

"I even asked the umpire one time, 'Man, are we that bad or is he that good?' And he said, 'Hey, he was that good," said Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker

Looks like Dusty is back to his old excuses. "No it wasn't our fault we couldn't score today, the pitcher was just really good." How about the 2 games before that or the 4 out of the last 5 we've lost because we can't score runs?

Finally got an RBI out of the clean up spot today.

Rolen is finished, could probably plug Janish in at 3rd and get more offense.

Bruce should be moved to cleanup ASAP. Why Dusty continues to bat Rolen 4th is mind boggling. Rolen should bat no higher than 6th or 7th.

Big series coming up against St. Louis. Two out of three would be great.

Dusty loves the veterans, for some reason he seems to always play the vets thinking they will rekindle what they used to have. If I was manager, Heisey would start everyday instead of Ludwick, and Rolen wouldn't be playing either, maybe a trade between Indians and Reds for Hannahan, same D and maybe a better stick right now for the Reds. Then Indians could bring back a hot Chisenhall.
