If your post was meant to be clueless and insensitive to people with mental illness then you need to be educated.

and he needs to start at the 1st grade level. My prayers are still going out to Ryan and his family. I wish nothing but the best for the big guy and his family, and wish more people would respect his right to some privacy

The fact is is that being unhealthy mentally might be even harder to heal than broken bones or torn muscles. If Tucker does have a debilitating mental illness bad enough to remove him from playing now, there may be a very real chance that it is bad enough to end his career.

There is also a very good chance he can be back to his old self in a few months. Lets not put the cart before the horse people.

True, GM, he might jsut need some time and he'll be hunky-dory. But I'd rather hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

I'd rather be over-prepared than caught with my pants around my ankles.

STATEMENT FROM HEAD TEAM PHYSICIAN DR. ANTHONY MINIACI ON BROWNS RT RYAN TUCKER

"Ryan Tucker has been placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List for a mental disorder not related to football. The nature of Ryan's mental health issue is one that is commonly experienced by the general population as well as by professional athletes, and it is a treatable disorder. Ryan has been battling this condition since before the season began, and has been actively receiving treatment. At this time, it is in his best interest to focus entirely on his medical treatment and concentrate on his recovery. Ryan has shown a significant amount of courage while battling this disorder, and he has expressed his desire to return to football. Cleveland Clinic Sports Health and the Cleveland Browns are optimistic that he will make a full recovery and be back in uniform for the 2007 season."

thankyou danielle for sharing this. this means alot to me. (no sarcasim). as a shared privately with dawgylama, i felt that if his problem was actually triggered by an off the field event (possibly tragic) than i perfectly understand. if it were simply "job stress" i would throw the b.s. flag. (which this link suggests that was not the case.

whatever caused this is definatly nobody's business. and hey i appologize to anyone i offended. i understand i may come off as a jerk on this topic but everything i said, i honestly believe. for those of you who discussed/debated, i thankyou. for those of you who just flamed/insulted, im sorry we couldnt see eye to eye (that last part was hard to say lol).

and thank you to dawgylama for contacting me and opening a discussion privatly.

The only thing I'll add is that this type of thing doesn't have to be triggered by an "event" at all.

You're welcome. It's very easy to read things on here take it a way other than what was intended. I know that's what I did in this case due to my sensitivity about mental illness due to all the people in my life who are dealing with the effects. I'm glad though that we were able to come to an understanding.

Do you guys realize that for every insensitive post, there are problably dozens of other posters who are thinking similar thoughts? They aren't posting because they don't want to get blasted, but believe me, they are out there.

For that reason..........I really wish they could have kept this private.

Cleveland Browns Tackle Out for Season With Mental Disorder
Dec 1, 4:08 PM (ET) Email this Story

By CONNIE MABIN
CLEVELAND (AP) -Cleveland Browns starting right tackle Ryan Tucker is battling an undisclosed mental disorder and hopes to return to football next season, the team said Friday.

The loss of Tucker is the latest setback for the banged-up Browns, whose shaky offensive line already is missing Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley, out all season with a knee injury suffered on the first day of training camp.

Tucker, one of the Brown's captains, has been a steady leader for a rebuilding team. He was the team's most productive offensive lineman the past four seasons.

The Browns refused to disclose more details about Tucker's illness, saying only that it was a common disorder not related to football. The 10-year veteran hoped to return to football next season, the team said in a statement.

"It is a treatable disorder. Ryan has been battling this condition since before the season began, and has been actively receiving treatment. At this time, it is in his best interest to focus entirely on his medical treatment and concentrate on his recovery," team physician Anthony Miniaci said in a statement.

Tucker was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list on Wednesday. He missed two games earlier in the season but returned to the starting lineup on Nov. 12. He played the first half of last week's game against Cincinnati before sitting out after halftime.

On Thursday, Browns general manager Phil Savage said he supported Tucker.

"Our concern is for him to get better and get his life back. He's really a good person and it's been a struggle. He's going to get through it," Savage said.

Miniaci said the team is optimistic Tucker will make a full recovery and play next season.

"Ryan has shown a significant amount of courage while battling this disorder," the doctor said.

They had to say something. It's been fairly obvious that he wasn't physically hurt. So to avoid wild and possibly hurtful speculation the team had no choice but to issue some kind of statement. If some people have a problem with Ryan's struggle then that truly is their problem.

Exactly....over the years I have seen many people disabled by mental disorder....it doesn't take a tragic event or excessive stress in one's life.....if just happens.

This isn't something one choses or can somehow ward off....it just happens, just as one gets cancer or MS.

Enough of the stupid talk.

If Ryan could have finished out the season it would have remained private, but people did know about this for a while, and it was kept very quiet.

I was just clicking on your post, but I forgot to say: "j/c." Sorry about that.

GM: Yeah, I knew about it quite some time ago. I still wish it wouldn't have become public knowledge.

I would have to assume, that Tucker was ready to share the info with the public. Otherwise I do not believe the team could have made that statement. Sometimes once public and treated, Ryan can be an example that it can happen to everyone, even the biggest, strongest people. I am sure there are so many people who are affected by what Ryan is going through. Hopefully he can be some sort of "rock" or role model to people who are struggling, an advocate of some sort........ maybe.

Sometimes kids look at these guys like they are superman. I've known a few players who struggle with things like Dyslexia and so on......( it might only be 1 child or adult it helps) but knowing they share a disorder with someone in this profession might help them to face it and overcome it.

It takes a strong person to come out and let the public know why they are away from the team. IMHO. Hopefully he helps someone by doing so.

OK,......after reading most of the posts in this thread I've come to the conclusion that I'm one of about 5 people in Northern Ohio that didn't know what was wrong with RT. Do you guys all get personal emails from the players or what?

[color:"orange"]Just clicking.

1. Screaming Eagle...as was noted by a poster...the Browns are his employer and they have been notified of his illness. You act like you are Tucker's boss like you pay some tax and he's a Civil Servant...and even then a Civil Servant has the Right to Privacy.

2. Mental Disorders not too long ago went un-diagnosed and seemed like a dirty word. Its an advancing field with remarkable advances. Prayers out to Tucker and may his return to health be swift and complete.

3. I'm glad Tucker is going public...I'd hate for the snooping low clas media to dig crap up and make assumptions.

4. Many people look up to Sports Figures as their role models. I hope Tucker discloses everything as I'm sure there are hundreds out there who probably share the same illness and are embarassed to take the proper steps to a cure. Tucker could serve as a good role model and I betcha there would be a spike of diagnosis of the same illness due to Tucker

5. He was being treated from prior to the start of the season...missed most of the pre-season. But Tucker hasn't looked as good as in recent years past. On a Selfish note. Hopefully this is why and not from his eroding talents...so that when he comes back cured...he will again be a viable component of our OL.

I know there are many who are insensitive or ignorant to the issue of mental illness but I don't feel that's any reason to keep it quiet. Of course, the decision to disclose is a personal one and I'm glad Tuck is letting it be said. It needs to be discussed. There are many who walk around with issues without treating them in any way. Thus, making them worse. Seeing more and more public figures come out about it might help others. I hope it does.

I've struggled with clinical depression for years and it aint an easy thing. I've sat in groups and listened to others share the nightmares that their lives have become because of it. That doesn't make me think less of them; it makes me admire their courage.

And I have learned not to think less of myself because of my struggles. I am glad I have faced it and I will continue to face it the rest of my life. My boss knows, my co-workers know, my family knows, and my friends know. I have been blessed with compassionate people in my life who listen even when they can't understand. That has helped me more than I can ever say. I pray Ryan gets that sort of support as well. God bless him on his way!

Ryan permiting his condition, to be released, will help bring disscusion and awarness too the conditions themselves. I found this from the Mayo Clinic, and thought it would help bring light too why it may be benificial for someone of Ryan's status too go public.

Celebrities help erase the stigma of mental illness
Not all the news is bad, though. Today, the stigma surrounding some mental illnesses is slowly eroding. That's due in part to greater public understanding of mental disorders and the biological basis that many of them have. As causes of mental illnesses and better treatments for them are discovered, stigma may fade even more.

Many celebrities are speaking out about their experiences with mental illness. Among them are Nobel Prize-winning economist John Forbes Nash Jr. (schizophrenia); actresses Patty Duke (bipolar disorder), Lorraine Bracco (depression) and Brooke Shields (postpartum depression); newspeople Jane Pauley (bipolar disorder) and Mike Wallace (depression); athletes Terry Bradshaw (depression) and Muffin Spencer-Devlin (bipolar disorder); writers Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D., (bipolar disorder), Art Buchwald (depression) and William Styron (depression); and such public figures as Tipper Gore (depression) and Kitty Dukakis (depression, substance abuse).

Celebrities who openly discuss their mental illnesses or write books about their experiences increase public awareness and help make it easier for others to reveal their struggles with mental illness.
