Okay thanks. I take it you see Taylor as a very valuable piece because he can eat up blockers and is a sturdy force in the run game?

I hope he's back at some point in the season where we are still "in it." I'm sure H and H are secretly down about this injury.

Yea I am a huge taylor fan. He is probably my favorite player on defense. I think this is a monster loss for our defense. We are actually stout up the middle until you get to the free safety who sucks.

Honestly I think the guy has the potential to be another Michael Dean Perry. He has so much raw talent, it is unreal.

I wish I could be as observant and intelligent about line play. It seems like you know your stuff about talent/upside with the big guys. If Taylor can be that dominant it will turn our defense into a great one IMO.

I have had conversations with the old Pitt Dline coach (he now coaches at Maryland). He has told me numerous times that Sheard will be an absolute monster within 2-3 years. He actually told me he wouldn't be surprised if he was DROY before last season. Talking with him has definitely taught me a few things about DLinemen.

Forget it Mourg...it's a clean torn pec, he's done for the season....you can't do anything without that muscle...as I said, right now I'd be more than happy if he comes back 2013 100%, and that's not a given....tricky injury

I'm looking for some insight here, since I'm pretty ignorant about guys in the trenches. I don't really know what to think about this injury. Some say it's a huge deal, while others say it isn't.

I guess here's my question to those who categorize this injury as a minor setback for our team: If Taylor is that "unimportant" then why the EFF did we draft him in the first round?? I mean couldn't we have benefited more from drafting a more impactful position? I'm really ignorant here

Actually he is important..his size alone and ability to take on double teams frees up Jackson ..also he is capable when he wants to ,to be unblockable and crash in the backfield..most of the yards gained by opponents came on plays to the DE's side.either to his right shoulder or outside..he was ineffective hence let go...when teams tried to run at Taylor they were not as effective as going outside.while he's not athletic and he can get caught by linemen hooking him on his inside moves he's a bull and can be destructive at the 1 or 3 technique..
He'll be missed but I'm hoping either Hughes or Winn can take that spot and roll with it.

Taylor has quick and powerful hands and this coaching staff are good teachers of hand usage and technique. Sky is the limit for the kid. Some don't understand how our system works with often one DT rushing and one playing the run. They see the run stuffer just holding his ground and not really trying to advance and they think lazy, taking a play off when he is doing what he is being asked to do.

Sheard is scary talent. I can not believe how good he looks rushing from the left side. Wish we would trade for Freeney or Osi to rush from the right.

DJ noone will know the true extent injury until they do the MRI and they usually wait a few days to let the swelling go down. Also as some guys heal much quicker than others. I heal from injuries incredibly quick anywhere but knees.

My guess is it will take them both to replace the Big Man ... Good thing we where able to get them in the Draft, A?

If there is a silver lining it will be the experience his replacements get from more PT and by next year we could be young and seasoned across the DL.

With that said I am saddened by the news of Taylor's injury and I was very excited about his projected progression this year from last.

No you aren't ignorant here. Those that try to devalue the impact Taylor had on our defense are the ones that are ignorant.

Hopefully we will have him back for the first game but my best guess is after the bye week which would allow him the final 7 games. Some guys heal really quick from this and others take some time and some never really heal completely from it.

I dunno...Count me as one who thought Taylor had an underwhelming year. *shrug* I certainly didn't see anything special in his play. In fact, for a guy his size, I saw him getting blown out of the hole by one blocker far-too often.

Will I think he'll get better? Sure, but I think any positive press about his rookie season was more hype because he was a full-time starter and former 1st-round pick as opposed to his actual production.

When Rubin ad Taylor were both in the game, our run defense was fairly stout. When one of them was replaced, it seemed like offenses realized this and ran right over the replacement for a big gain. I think Heckert noticed this and that is why we drafted Hughes when we did. Losing Taylor hurts. On the bright side, his replacements will get experience and hopefully Weeden, TR and the defense all gel at the same time in 2013.

Pat Shurmur, Mike Holmgren keep optimistic on Phil Taylor's status: Browns Insider

taylor-fans-browns-jags-horiz-jk.jpgJohn Kuntz, The Plain DealerBrowns defensive tackle will miss significant time according to Coach Pat Shurmur after suffering a torn pectoral muscle on Thursday.

BEREA, Ohio -- Pat Shurmur acknowledged that defensive tackle Phil Taylor could be lost for the 2012 season to a torn left pectoral muscle, but the Browns aren't ready to write him off.

"He's going to miss a significant amount of time, more months than weeks," the Browns head coach said. "It's too early to speculate on how long that will be. Everybody recovers at a different rate. Our guess is he'll be a fast healer."

Taylor, the team's first-round pick last season, was injured while bench-pressing during an off-season workout on Thursday. He'll undergo surgery next week and the Browns will know more then about his prognosis. If it's a complete tear, he could be out six to nine months.

At a Friday luncheon at the University of Akron, team president Mike Holmgren held out hope. "I think there's a chance he can come back and play [this season]," he said.

Holmgren said he spoke with members of the strength and conditioning staff to find out what happened. He was assured Taylor "was doing everything fine, that he was not lifting too much weight for Phil. He already had done a couple of reps. I think we're doing everything right and I think Phil is doing everything right. He has been working out so well. It was one of those things that happened that nobody can predict."

Holmgren said the Browns might have to wait until final cuts to see which linemen get released, "but in a perfect world you'd like to have [a replacement] in camp with you."

In the meantime, the Browns drafted two tackles and signed two ends in free agency, one of whom could move inside if necessary. Former Bengal Frostee Rucker played inside in nickel situations and could fill in at tackle.

The Browns also drafted tackle John Hughes in the third round and Billy Winn in the sixth. The Browns have been criticized for taking Hughes so early, but Hughes hasn't let it affect him.

"No, I don't think about that at all really," Hughes said. "I'm going to come out here and play. People can think what they want. I know I can play and I can't wait to prove it."

He said Taylor's injury hasn't changed his approach.

"I had the same mentality that I had two days earlier: to play the best ball I can and try to be a good addition to the team."

He said he stepped up his work ethic his senior year. He also began to play the pass as well as the run. He finished 2011 with 51 tackles, including 12.5 for a loss.

"I think my biggest step was the mental part of the game," he said. "I got a lot smarter. I could diagnose plays a lot better. I didn't want to let my team down, I wanted to go as far as I could in my last year with the team and make history in Cincinnati."

Winn signed his four-year contract Friday.

"I'm going to come out and compete every day," he said. "None of us is on the team yet. We're all looking to compete against each other and make each other better."

Winn said he's most comfortable at the three-technique, which is where Taylor played. "I'd also say I play with a lot of speed at that position."

He said he and Hughes feel like they're in this together.

"We've already started to create that little bond," he said. "We're roommates so we've been doing a little chatting and going over the playbook. We'll help each other out and compete against each other and make each other better."

No Sweat: Ohio State linebacker Andrew Sweat was signed as an undrafted free agent, but didn't show for rookie camp. "I think he's made a decision he's not going to play," said Shurmur.

No Plax: Shurmur said team officials haven't discussed signing free agent receiver Plaxico Burress, who told Sirius XM radio the Browns are one of about four teams he'd like to play for.

On Benjamin: Shurmur took exception to a question about receiver Travis Benjamin dropping two balls in Friday's workout. He caught at least a half-dozen others.

"Let's not go there yet," Shurmur said. "I think they're all getting used to it. I think he catches the ball fine and he's fast-fast. In my opinion, for the most part the guys caught the ball pretty well. I think he's got good hands and he'll show it."

Schwartz signs: Second-round pick Mitchell Schwartz signed his four-year deal Friday, a source said. It includes a $2.206 million signing bonus and has a maximum value of $5.17 million. As of last night, the Browns had only three to go: Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden and sixth-rounder Emmanuel Acho.

Regional appearances: Holmgren served as a keynote speaker in Akron at the first of two "Football Friday" luncheons this month. It is part of the club's regional market initiative which continues next Friday as Shurmur speaks at the Maronite Center in Youngstown.

Holmgren was joined by tight end Ben Watson and several Browns alumni. Jim Donovan, the voice of the Browns, emceed the luncheon, which included an appearance from new UA football coach Terry Bowden.

"This one is really about thanking the fans of Akron because they are such great fans down here ... and expanding my reach in Ohio," Holmgren said web page

on Taylor, let's remember that this is more than just healing from the injury. he's not going to be able to lift much of anything for the next 4-6 months and is going to lose body mass, strength, etc.

after he heals, he will have to build all of that back up before he can play (at least before he can play well). so, if it takes 4 months to heal, then it should be an additional 2 (at least) to get back into shape.

Set the days without embarassment as a Browns fan clock back to zero days.

The clock was counting up form the RG3 trade announcement to washington, which I think was in the Feb 29th to March 2nd range.
Soo 70-73 days without bad news.
Only in Cleveland.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Sure seems that way, but more lately than previously.

Let's talk some turkey here...Rucker...he's gotta play a huge role, which means, IMHO, he's gotta play WAY beyond anything he's produced in his 5-year career.

I dunno...I'm sure we gotta hit the wire and pluck someone from the well.

It reeks of wishful-thinking but if Rucker can move inside, we could sign Andre Carter to play end in a rotational system. Of course he'd have to be healthy, which is an unknown.

Hmm ... strange.

I never understood why a guy wouldn't show up. Sure he might not make this team, with 2 drafted LB ahead of him, but by competing in camps, and in pre-season games, he's also competing for those last few spots on other teams, and for practice squad spots.

You still refuse to see Rucker and Parker as a combo at RDE....the norm will be Rucker on 1st and 2nd down at RDE and on passing 3rd downs Parker takes over RDE and now that Taylor's out Rucker will probably slide inside in a rotation with Winn, while Hughes will play inside n run downs

rush downs: Sheard-Hughes-Rubin-Rucker

pass downs: Sheard-Rubin-Rucker/Winn-Parker

As you can see, the snap numbers of Rubin and Sheard (and probably Parker on some 2nd downs to spell Rucker/Sheard) will go up with Taylor's loss as we have 1 less quality DL to rotate now....I have to say, with Taylor in the mix it was a really nice plan and rotation set up....that's why I keep insisting that his loss was pretty huge...with Taylor we needed just 1 of Hughes or Winn to be ready and emerge, now we need both...and as quickly as possible....and that's a lot to ask out of any rookie DL, especially ones drafted outside the Top 2 rounds

Losing a 1st round talent always hurts a lot and has a bad trickle down effect on the entire unit...imagine the OL without Thomas or our CBs without Haden or RBs without TR....most will disagree, but for me losing Taylor is as bad...it's tough to find interior DL who can both play 3tech and NT, it's rare...Rubin is getting there after 4 seasons, Taylor was so naturally gifted that he played both pretty decently his rookie season where he was on the field way too much...this is a huge loss folks...DL was looking like a real strength....now we have to pray to just field an AVG unit

Oh yes Daman, because the truth is soooooo funny right?

Lets see here, Phil Taylor started 16 games last year and had 59 tackles and 4 sack.

Ahtyba Rubin Started 16 games last year and had 83 tackles and 5 sacks.

See the huge gap difference there in productivity?

Phil Taylor had a very pedestrian year.....Rubin is the cornerstone of this line....

it is what it is, Taylor was not the best DL we had last year....he was in fact maybe not even the 3rd best d-lineman....Sheard (who im not real high on mind you because he gets abused in the running game) is way more of an impact player then Taylor.

Also don't give me this nonsense about DT not being an impact position...Rubin IS an impact player at DT....

Taylor is at DT right in the middle of the action... and this bum can't even get 60 tackles in 16 games? All the while Rubin has his second straight year of over 80 tackles?

its inexcusable TRASH production from a DT...oh and how about how bad our Run Defense SUCKED!!!! Taylor was part of the problem.....the only two guys we have on Defense then evne have a clue og how to tackle someone are Dqwell Jackson and Rubin....thats pretty much it.

Yes im totally justified in calling Taylor a bum we won't miss....a 1st draft pick at DT who can't even get 60 tackles in 16 games is not a very good DT....rubin who plays right next to him proves this....oh and Rubin had 82 tackles the year before Taylor was drafted....and still manged a few sacks while playing NT is a 3-4...did i mention Rubin being double teamed every snap in 2010 in Mangini's 3-4?

so really i think the joke is on guys like you Daman that think Taylor is anything more then a below average player....we better hope to god Rubin don't get or leave anytime soon....because Taylor will really look like god awful utter garbage without Rubin...

I dont know why you are not putting Benard in the mix.. He was our best pass rusher pre-Sheard... and he can do it from both sides..

For some reason they're not allowed. I don't remember why but it has always been that way for Ohio State seniors. Maybe something to do with semesters vs. quarters?

Not sure...RT Shugarts was at camp too after all, also a Buckeye..and even if he wasn't allowed or something, don't you think he or his agent would have told the Browns? Maybe he got a good offer from another football league and that's his way out of the contract

Not that this BS is worth any sort of answer, but you could at least look up league wide stats before calling Taylor's stats/production crap

Here's reality Mr KoB:

Taylor had the 3rd most tackles by ANY DT in the entire NFL in 2012...only behind Rubin and Peko....his 4 sacks ranks him in the top 10 (t8th) of ALL DTs in the league too

Yeah, that's a lot of egg on your face btw

Kevin Williams...righ there in the middle of the D, and this bum cant get 6000 tackles? What a bum, he just had 38 tackles

I missed that part. The reason I thought this is because I remember Peyton Manning driving to Columbus to work with Gonzo because he wasn't able to leave for camps.

Taylor is an over-rated bum.....he is not that great, he isn't going to make a difference if he is there or not.

Rubin is the Cornerstone of this Defensive Line...you cna put ANYBODY next to Rubin and they will look good....Taylor only looked decent last year because of Rubin....take Rubin away and Taylor looks like trash.

We will be just fine....

This has to be the most ridiculous post I've read in a while. Taylor was a major upgrade to Rodgers as a rookie. Add to that, he started all 16 games. We will be affected by this loss, however this does give us the opportunity to grow our 2 rookies.

The more I think about it this wouldn't apply to rookie camp because they are not in school these days. I was the ota that were the issue.

Someone that feels like looking it up can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain that with the exception, I believe, of the first Rookie Mini-Camp following the Draft, rookies are not permitted to show up or take part in practices until after their school's graduation.

So, he should have been there, but wasn't. For Shurmur to publicly state that he believes that the kid has chosen to not play - at the least - signifies that he was expected to be there and the FO is not happy. Either the kid is an idiot or, well.... he's an idiot. This league isn't fond of throwing bones to people on second chances... you typically only get one shot. Sure, you might not make it, but not even taking that shot is a complete waste of an opportunity that most kids would kill for.

Good news for us is that we now have an open roster spot.... sign a DT.

Actually ..... if you look at DT production as far as tackles and sacks, I believe that Taylor would rank rather high on that list.

Rubin, if I didn't miss anyone on the list, had the most tackles of any DT. Peko of Cincinnati was 2nd with 63. (and 2.5 sacks) Next on the list of DT? Phil Taylor with 59 tackles and 4 sacks.

Bum indeed.

Pedestrian? Only if 3rd in the league is pedestrian. What does that make the rest of the DT in the NFL?

Personally, I felt kinda comfortable having 2 of the top 3 DT in terms of tackles and sacks playing on our DL.

Eh, there were 6 DT/NTs who had between 50 and 60 tackles. It's not amazing production (like Rubin's 80-some) but its not bad either. I'd call it above average.

He was 3rd in the NFL ..... with "5 or 6" in the same area ...... out of hos many NT/DT in the entire NFL?

And people complained because I expected our QB to be something other than last in the NFL. Here we have a top 3 guy ...... or even a top 10 guy at worst ...... and people are saying he's "so-so".

I know. All I'm saying is that, looking at the stats alone, a two- or three-tackle swing and we would be saying he was the 4th or 5th or 6th highest, that's all. He had a pretty good year on paper, and he'll be missed, but I'm not about to crown him as one of the top DTs in the league based on having the third-most tackles among DTs last year.

To be fair, I'm also not calling him "so-so".

Gotta take all tackle numbers with a big ol' grain of salt.... especially when the player is on a defense as bad as ours was at getting off the field.
It's easy to rack up a ton of tackles when you're on the field for a ton of snaps.

A better way of viewing it would be to look at a ratio of tackles made vs # of snaps on the field. Breaking it down even further to only include run plays that were run at that player's area of responsibility would be good as well. Include all passing downs, of course. The recompute those numbers for all DT's and see where he really ranks.

The sack number is good, but, again, it would be better to have that represented as sacks per pass play that he was on the field for.

Look at his tackles, (3rd among DT) sacks, (9th among DT) solo tackles, (2nd behind Rubin) forced fumbles, (1, tied for 4th among DT) and so on. I did not count NT, because that is a different animal, and if your NT isn't making tackles, your defense is in major trouble.

Anyway .... he's not just a run of the mill type DT, and he was only a rookie last year. He should have taken a step forward this year with a full off-season and camp. Unfortunately, now he'll be sidelined.

I agree and also taking into consideration it was but his rookie champagne I am astounded by the level of negative criticism in this thread.

Good Grief PPL

Big difference between a LB making tackles 7-10 yards downfield and a DT making tackles at, or near the LOS.

I agree. I'm going to assume that the vast majority of our DL's tackles were made on run plays (aside from sacks, obviously). We were the 2nd most run-on team last year, with 534 attempts against (Indy was first at 540).

Like I said before, I think Taylor is an above-average DT, and he will be missed. I just believe he has a ways to go to become elite. It's difficult to consider any of your front 7 elite when your run defense is as poor as ours was last season.

We got run on wide more than I can remember in quite some time. We were almost decent up the gut, with Rubin, Taylor, and DQ .... but once plays hit the edge, Mitchell was awful, Fujita often looked slow, Gocong looked out of place on the weak side, and Ward was the only safety who really seemed to play run at all. There was a lot that went into the lack of run defense last year.
