Was surprised to see this at ESPN . . . Sure, why not . . . ?

Marcus Benard feels 'blessed'

May 30, 2012, 8:32 PM ET

BEREA, Ohio -- As sweat beads streaked his cheeks, defensive end Marcus Benard looked out at the green practice fields behind the Browns' training facility.

For a time, he didn't know if he'd see them again.

He made it back.

Seven months ago, an instant of recklessness on a motorcycle nearly took Benard's life. At 26, a highly paid professional athlete just tapping into his potential, Benard, who had beaten the odds and made an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent, almost threw everything away and left three young sons without their father.

Benard was lucky. He lived and learned.

"I appreciate life," he said. "And I appreciate the sport that I'm playing and my responsibilities to it. It's a blessing and I feel like it's a plan.

"I'm very happy to be here."

Benard spoke to reporters Wednesday for the first time since his harrowing experience. Before answering questions, he smiled and shook hands with several media members, another step in his recovery completed.

On Oct. 10, Benard had just left practice when he crashed his three-wheel Can-Am Spyder into a guardrail on Interstate 71. Brooklyn Police estimated that the 6-foot-2, 260-pound Benard, who led the Browns in sacks the previous season, was thrown an estimated 80 yards before coming to a stop.

He broke his right hand and sustained other unspecified injuries that required a three-day hospital stay at The Cleveland Clinic. Benard declined to discuss any specifics about his horrific accident or other injuries. The only visible reminder of his traumatic ordeal is a long, thick scar tracing from the middle of his right hand past his wrist.

Benard was asked if the wreck had changed him.

He paused, perhaps searching for the proper words.

"It did," he said. "But you live and you learn from everything. You walk up stairs and you stub your toe and you say I'm going to pick my feet up this time. So I learned a valuable lesson, just the appreciation of life. I feel like it was a blessing and you learn your lessons.

"You learn more about life. You learn more about yourself. Sitting out and going through what I went through -- rehab and everything -- you always sit back and evaluate yourself and evaluate your position in life."

When he was finally cleared to return, Benard remembers his mind filling with many thoughts as he ran back onto the field with his teammates.

"I was just excited just to be back with the team and to be back on grass," he said. "Life's chaotic, but the football field is where we're comfortable, where I'm comfortable and it was just a joy to be able to have that chance again and to be able to be on the team."

Benard expressed his gratitude to the Browns, whom he said were there "from Day One." The team could have released him following the accident because it was a nonfootball-related injury, but the Browns chose to pay him the final 12 game checks on his $525,000 salary.

"Words can't even describe how wonderful they've been to me," he said. "I will forever appreciate the Browns for what they did for me."

Benard said he no longer rides a motorcycle. The one he was on when he wrecked last October, one day after the Browns completed their bye week, had its front wheels torn off by the impact. Following the crash, Benard said his first thoughts were about his three boys, Domanic, Marcus Jr., and Ashai.

"That's my heart and I don't ever want to disappoint them," he said. "I want to be there for them."

Browns coach Pat Shurmur has noticed a physical change in Benard, who bulked up last year when the team switched from a 3-4 to 4-3 defensive front. Benard says he now weighs 260 pounds.

"He's much leaner," Shurmur said. "He looks much more fit and he's flashed a little bit. He looks like he's putting himself in position to have a good camp."

Shurmur also believes Benard has matured following last year's life-altering event.

"I'm glad he's here and I think we all go through things in life that refocus us on doing things the right way and allowing us to be able to continue things that are important to us. He's done that."

Not that he did before, but Benard now knows not to take anything for granted.

The crash has made him more aware, more thankful.

"Blessed," he said. "Above anything, blessed. I'm happy to be here. It was an event. It's not something that I can just shrug off or anyone else can just shrug off. I'm not going to say that it was nothing, but it was definitely something and it's a blessing."

What really puts a team over the top are the X factor guys .....guys you're not expecting anything from.

When those guys start to contribute in a big way that's when the team will really turn the corner.

Benard could potentially be an X factor guy for us.

Here's hoping. He sure was able to get to the QB quite a bit . . .

Still can't believe any of these players, especially on the BROWNS, would get a motorcycle fast enough to threaten their health or even life . . .

Kind of curious why.. are Browns players inherently smarter or more responsible than other NFL players?

And for the record, every motorcycle I know of will go 80 mph, which is plenty fast enough to risk your health and life...

It's not about owning/riding one, It's about doing it safely.

Winslow didn't ruin his career because he owned a motorcycle, he was goofing off and messed up.

Benard was on a 3 wheeled bike, which is IMO safer than a 3 wheeled one, but was going too fast...

Unless someone has it in their contract that they aren't allowed to own one, which I doubt you'd ever see (some contracts prohibit off field sporting activities, which is why Pacman Jones is a former TNA Tag Team Champion, even though he was literally never touched in a ring)

I have nothing against people owning them, just don't be stupid.

I assumed people would know I was referring to the Winslow incident, when I said "especially" Browns players . . .

Benard has been one of my favorite DE/olb's for quite some time now. I'm hoping he can get significant playing time. Dude wrecks havoc on opposing QBs.

Ok, I missed that inference... however to assume that pro athletes learn from the mistakes of other pro athletes is a bit optimistic, whether they are on the same team or not.

Yeah, I agree there. Was also thinking maybe the Browns staff might go a little more out of their way to remind the players to not be stupid like Winslow.

Who knows . . . however the players think or the staff acts, Benard still went and got hurt . . .

None of the coaches and very few of the players were even here with Winslow.... "Don't be an idiot!!!" isn't something an adult should have to be taught.

Next time I hear some idiot trashing Cleveland and proclaiming, why would anyone want to go there...they might want to think about how the Browns treat their players when injured.

The Browns could have given up on DQ Jackson after his second peck surgery, but they didn't and DQ just signed a new 5 yr contract in Feb.

Bernard, could have been cut to send a message, but instead the Browns stood by him and his 3 sons. Hopefully Marcus has a break out year and becomes an elite pass rushing DE, now that he has a second chance.

Prove your point mac... give us a list of the high profile FA signings over the last 10 years... to allow you greater latitude, feel free to include all 3 Cleveland professional teams... On one side, note the players that have left other teams to come to Cleveland and on the other side, note the players that have left Cleveland and gone somewhere else... Ready, go.

We have a saying on this side of the state, "Cleveland would be a nice place to be, if it weren't in Cleveland." Sorry, I just had to say it.

List of " high profile" that's a qualifier
" free agent" that's a qualifier
and " in the last 10 years" that's a qualifer. Too many rules.

It depends on your definition of high profile too. Some people, like Brian Urlacher for instance are just overly talked about because they start out in a city like Chicago or New York.

Lebron James, left the Caviliers. on the other side. Nobody, joined the Caviliers.

( preface, I don't follow baseball enough) CC Sabathia, and another pitcher left Cleveland to pitch in the post season for bigger market teams.
ON the other hand, Nobody joined the Indians.

Peyton Hillis left the Browns for Kansas City. ON the other hand, Nobody joined the Browns.

It is a difficult line to draw on who is high profile and who is not.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Next time I'll just say, "Give me a list of people." Or is "people" too restrictive?

However you did a decent job of showing that big name players have left, none have come to Cleveland... Of all the Cleveland teams, who is our biggest recent signing? Steinbach?

I'd say LeCharles Bentley by far. He was considered the best OC in the entire NFL when he hit the FA market and he was an OH kid to boot.

Cavs - almost entirely by trades, umm...I'd have to cheat and says Zydrunus Ilguaskas (though noone expected him to go anywhere else after the Jamison trade)

Indians - Kerry Wood. He was expected to be our shutdown closer and the Yankees were after him for the 8th inning role (which they eventually traded for him to be). The fact he was a HUGE name and we 'outbid' the Yankees makes him the winner I guess (among a bunch of other no-names).
