I throw my charcoal in the charcoal chimney, light paper in the bottom and am ready to grill in 20 minutes. I guess some people on the board are VERY busy people if 20 minutes while you are preparing what you are cooking is too much....I think they are just lazy and won't admit it. And dumping the coals is the only clean up difference...I think that takes about 30 seconds. Again, I understand some people like gas grills, but I think some are stretching the convenience factor just a bit.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I've got a charcoal Weber. I use the chimney, but I'm ready to grill in about 5 - 10 mins. I let the coals light up (3-5 mins) and let the grill warm up (5 mins or so), scrape it off and toss on the meat.

Haven't gotten food poisoning yet at least. Burgers last weekend turned out pretty good.

Isn't that what everyone uses?

I grill 2-3 times a week.

It's hot outside, but running the over to bake or broil something, just heats up the house. So I prefer to do my cooking outside.

I work 70+ hours per week! am a single dad and still do charcoal. I really don't understand the time thing. I can have my grill ready to go in 15 minutes. Sure gas is a bit quicker than that but not by much. I usually have at least 15 minutes of prep time anyhow for the food. I grill out 4 to 5 times at a minimum per week.

It really boils an to personal preference. I will not use gas as I just don't like it..might as well cook inside IMO.

And the much cheaper is not always the case....

If I can get another 15 minutes to my day to myself, then I'm happy. It's 830, and I just sat down to relax. I do have a charcoal grill, something small and cheap that I take tailgating, or will use if I have some extra time to just do it. But a lot of times I'm cooking for myself, or myself and wife, and hate to get that charcoal going to going for 2 pieces of meat.

see?

Option 2 is better........more beer.

I'm getting a charcoal grill soon....not sure which one, something relatively small for the wife and kid. Nothing too crazy.

Not at all. In that 20 minutes that it takes you to get the coals ready, I can light my grill, cook two burgers, eat them and be out the door.
For me, on Mon & Tues nights, my schedule is *that* tight - so, many nights (like tonight) I either am not able to eat before I have to roll out (it's 10pm and I'm just now eating dinner - two burgers and some grilled zucchini), or I have to do something that is very, very quick.

Lighter fluid?!?!?! Noooooooo! Yuck!

Use a chimney lighter with paper under it.

Or I use an electric lighter with an Eggcellerator on my BGE. Have it to 600 degrees in 15 minutes.

Umm....lazy has nothing to do with it. Work all day, pick up my daughter from school, drop her off so I can go to the gym, work my butt off there. Come home, usually pick up after my wife, start dinner when she's on her way home, and then give my daughter a bath and get her teeth brushed. Then between 830-900, I get to relax.

I'd hardly call that lazy.

And I do prep my food. A lot of stuff, I get ready before the gym- trim, season, etc and let it sit, so when I'm home and ready, I fire it up.

I've spent hours upon hours on a weekend with nothing else I had to do cooking meals from complete scratch. So yes, the convenience factor is big for me. And if I want to take the time to grill without gas, I have the grill for it. It's just a preference. I'll sacrifice a little to get a little extra time with my daughter or myself. If it's 20 minutes, it's 20 minutes.

The other reason I use gas is I live in an apartment at this time. The apartment rules state no open flame grills. Gas only. So even if I wanted I couldn't use charcoal.
So not only do I find it more convenient but also it's in compliance with the rules I'm bound by at this time. Besides who wants to deal with a never ending parade of spent coals. As it stands I can grill nightly without that hassle.

Not all of us live a life of leisure where we have nothing more to do than watch coals heat
As for sensitivity - lol! You claimed that the convenience aspect was being played up, thus a couple of us simply backed that claim up, that's all. Nothing more. It is WAY more convenient.

Please see the post about being lazy, ya'll are quite sensitive. And yes, I still think some of you are overplaying the convenience factor. I suppose convenience is in the eye of the beholder. To claim it's WAY more convenient is funny to me.

Yes, I can definitely see where living in an apartment would make a gas grill a must. I'm sure I would have one in that situation.

What if I only capitalized one or two of the letters in WAY... would that be more accurate?

If I can hook up a tank once every 5 or 6 (or more) years compared to having to lug bags of charcoal constantly ..... my back chooses the tank.

You don't grill much if you only need a new lp gas tank once every 5 or 6 years. And knowing that, carrying charcoal wouldn't be that tough. You wouldn't use much.

Regardless - I prefer lp grills for the convenience. Flavor? Haven't noticed much of a difference in flavor when I've been at friends houses and they smoke or charcoal grill...............just me, I'm sure.

Time? I don't know. Convenience? Great.

I have both. I use both. Each has their time and place. If I use coals, I use a charcoal chimney and beeswax / sawduct starter bricks. I start them accordingly and busy myself doing other things while they fire up to temp.

5-6 years????

What kind of tank do you have???

I don't have gas at the moment, but have had, and a standard tank wouldn't last 2-3 months at best.

I do understand I am a southerner and either cook with high heat, which requires a good amount of preheating, or slow, smoke cooking which requires 7-10 hours of burning. Maybe 12 hours.

Years??

I was thinking the same thing. I have to fill my tank at least 4 times a year. Like you I often slow cook. Add the fact that I grill year round. I can't imagine a tank lasting 6 months. Let alone 5-6 years.

I do mainly burgers, chicken breasts, pork steaks, sausage, or steaks (usually ribeyes or strips)

I don't have the grill going for hours. I usually have it going to half an hour at most. Heat it up, cook, clean it up, and go. Nothing I cook takes that long to cook. Even inch thick steaks don't take that long cooking to a nice medium rare. (I like 'em just when they stop mooing)

Like I said, I cook on the grill probably 25-30 times per year. It was a little less last year with my back, but I have forced myself to do a little more this year.

I have also taken to cooking up a few things at a time ..... throw a couple of burgers on, with a couple of chicken breasts, and maybe a couple of sausage ..... then I have a few meals in the fridge that I can just heat up and chow. Makes it easier for me when I can have a few meals ahead when my back lets me do so.

If that's the way you get your food off a charcoal grill, someone doesn't know what they are doing.

Quote:

I really don't care how people like to grill, it's a personal thing just like anything else. But, people acting like it takes SO much longer to fire up a charcoal grill are cracking me up.

For some reason, it's never seemed to bother me. 15 min in the chimney, and Game On.

Quote:

It might take the coals 20-30 minutes to be ready, but it doesn't take that much extra time....while the coals are burning, you are doing prep that you would be doing anyway.

Yup. THERE'S my reason, right there.

Interesting you mentioned that. I use lump charcoal, and close the vents as soon as the food is off the grill. The next time I grill, the semi-burnt coals go at the bottom of the chimey, fresh coals go up top.

I actually have to deal with spent coals maybe once every 4-5 cookings.... and even then, it's a two-minute job.

We cook the same stuff. I eat my meat red as well.

We are both probably off a bit on our timeframe. After thinking about it, it was probably more like fill the tank every 6 months.

I'm not off in my time frame at all. I bought my house 5 years ago. I bought my grill before I bought my house. I have never refilled the tank after getting that first tank.

I will also say that there are some times when I only turn on half the grill. If I am just cooking a couple of burgers, or a coupe of steaks, then I don't need to heat up the entire grill to cook them.

Also, I have a smaller grill. It's not one of those monstrosities with 8 side burners and 22 elements inside. lol It's a small, simple, gas grill.

I'm with you Ytown...actually, we're having to replace our grill before we replace our propane tank. (husband keeps forgetting to put the damn grill cover on it when he's done cooking)

I've used this thread as part of our pre buying research. We've found what we're getting. A Char-Griller (same company that mankes the Kamado grill mentioned earlier). It's a propane grill and smoker. We're not buying the smoker box yet as we'll use the tin foil method for the time being, just until we see how much we actually use it. If we use it a lot, the smoker box attachment will be added. Otherwise, why pay extra for something we don't use.

I love my CharGriller. I'm using it right now, to smoke a turkey breast. At some point down the road, you really should get the sidebox... it works exceptionally well. I used a chimneyfull of lumo in the bottom tray, placed a pecan log on the upper grat, and closed the door.... the coal fired up the pecan log, and the whole thing held steady at 225 like the thing was thermostatically controlled! I've been out once to dump some fresh coal (when I basted) and that's it.

Guarnatees you tjis- once you get it, you'll wonder how you survived without it.
